Many years ago, my son and me picked up stones on the beach. ( in Goa, India).
I didn't know anything about it.
I kept it because I like decorating. Put stones in pots and vases. Today, its thrill to look at it. Some agates some jasper's.
But it still looks pretty in pots and vases.
Thanks to your video, I'm learning a lot.
    It's a fascinating thing.
For those who have the chance of having this as a hobby, it's great.
Have fun , collecting the pretty gifts from nature.
Good health to all. Wish you all the very best.

Believe it or not, most of the agates I find are in bags of river rock and pebbles that you find in any garden center. I usually get my bags from Wal-Mart because it's the closet to me and they are only $3.99 a 40 pound bag! You do have to wash all the rock but I find so many that it is a joy to sit out on a nice sunny day, on my rolling cart, sit down with the hose and wash the rocks, in the bags they come in. Just stick the hose in the bag ( all the bags have tiny holes in them ) rinse them, the water drains out through the tiny holes and just start picking. Some of them are huge in the bag of river rocks but in the river pebbles they are small. Lots of fun and I have a huge collection! When we were vacationing in the Smokey Mountains, my husband and I go into rivers and streams and I found a near perfect 3-4 pound river agate, smooth from being tumbled down the river. Yellow in color and when you shine a flashlight through it, it's translucent through most of it and opaque in the middle, because it is so huge! Enjoyed your video. Wish we had rocky beaches here on the East Coast but the ones we do have are much too far for this old girl, to get to. Have a great time agate hunting! 😉😊

I’m your typical Myrtle beach guy, so where are rocky beaches in the east to find rocks for tumbling. I’m new to tumbling and your idea of rocks from wal-mart is genius since it is brought in...never thought of that! Thanks!

I find my best days to hunt for agates to be days with some mist and slight rain. The moisture on the agates only causes them to stand out with greater brilliance compared to the surrounding dull quartz, basalt or jasper.

The tides during the year bring in various amounts of sand. Some months there are more gravel beds exposed. I enjoy going out during the Winter months when the storms have raked the beach and brought new stones up on the beach.

    Do all agates have rings?

    • @timblair3004
      @timblair3004  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes.. all agates have rings. Agates are really just Chalcedony that is formed out of silica that has seeped into air pockets or crevices in the rock. The silica hardens and forms the translucent rock called Chalcedony. When the silica has different chemicals and forms layers over the many years ... rings form. That's when you have agates. The rings or layers are what makes agate chalcedony unique. So, when you find on the beach a chunk of Chalcedony with rings it is an agate. Without rings with only a smooth translucent appearance you only have Chalcedony.

    • @timblair3004

agates are very unique rock formations that are washed down rivers into water ways and out to sea. They are found washed up on beaches and have a very unique appearance compared to other quartz rocks or basalt. Quartz is a crystaline rock formation with a somewhat opaque appearance. Agates are much clearer and almost look like glass with a textured surface appearance. The agate is typically formed inside a volcanic type rock air pocket or fissure. A silica substance seeps into the air pocket and slowly forms layers of rock over time. This rock formation becomes a layered geode with visible banding inside the clear rock. When you pick up an agate on the beach you can typically see a rough surface that portrays the interior of the host rock that formed it. The agate really stands out on the beach as it glows in the sunlight against the other dull colored quartz, red jasper or darker basalt rock. They truly are semi precious jewels deposited on most beaches awaiting our discovery! more info on my web page pnwbeachcombing.com look on the "rocks" page with details about agates. Wherever you find rock bed deposits on river banks, lake beaches or the East Coast beaches you should find agates!

If you can find rock beds with many varieties of stones you might be able to find agates. If there are many rivers that feed the deposits down from the hills that are close by your local beaches then you may find agates. I found this web site with many maps of the NSW area. It might be helpful for you. Have a great time exploring and agate hunting!

The white rocks at 3:26 are white quartz. They are very numerous on the Damon Point Beach. I've brought back many and have shined them in my home tumbler. Thanks for watching!

now pretty much at the end of my life I like seeing young people getting out there. I was a maniac beyond belief. I would go out south of newport oregon in almost hurricane winds well before daybreak to catch the low tide with lantern. as I look back now I cant believe i did it. But I have good agates.
