    Hellyeah was the first band I saw using ENGL amps, so that's the vibe I was going for with the demo track. This one was a ton of work and planning, but it was pretty fun to switch things up! Let me know what you think of this format for amp videos :)

    I've had this amp for about a year now and couldn't agree more with your review. I use it with a helix lt (which is a MIDI controller) and once I got my head around using the helix and the engl together it's tone heaven. I remember watching olas video and thinking that's the tone I want and bought it on the strength of that video. I would recommend this amp but be prepared to put some time in learning about how to use it/MIDI in general.

      Try it in person or make sure you can return it if you don’t like it. Also carefully consider the cabinet you are going to be using because a cabinet might not do whatever you are using justice. It can take a fantastic amp into a devastating nuclear wasteland. I can go back and listen to my recordings and hear a huge difference in my sound of the past compared to my current selection of tones. If you get the chance take the time to hear it through a microphone recording too. The reason being that if you buy an amplifier where you hear all the sound from a speaker aimed lower than you ears you are getting a perspective close to what a room mic would record and not the actually sound in front of the speaker itself. You might not like the recording tone direct from a mic in front of the cabinet and end up regretting the purchase. Hope you get the sound you’re looking for and something you really like!

    Hi, Hunter! Thanks for clearing up the confusion about your name and ENGL's; I did wonder about that, though not much. Thanks also for calling me "cool", although I don't know that I deserve such a compliment from someone who plays SO much better than I do. In my defense, I've been called that before, although I have to wish that I had been younger than 50(!) when that happened!😎
    Some things about the ENGL Savage remind me of why I went digital, mostly the versatility factor. Understand that I am both old school and historically broke, so that means that I had to SQUEEZE the most I could from every piece of gear that I got. Old habits like that really die hard, so I look for large amounts of versatility from all my current gear. The only actual tube amp that I can recall being anywhere NEAR as versatile as most digital modellers is Fender's old and discontinued Cyber Twin with the Cyber Deluxe as a runner-up. These two amps used a type of ANALOG modelling to do their magic, and magic it was. Somehow, Fender designed and built these amps to REWIRE themselves into close duplicates of the amps that they modeled; for that reason, they sounded MUCH more like the original amps than any modeller I've heard. (DAMN, I wanted a Cyber Twin!) This in spite of the fact that neither amp came with the same compliment of speakers/cabs as the originals! For this reason and others, I've decided that my several digital modellers should be considered gateways into crafting my own sounds rather than replicating the sounds of classic or modern amps.
    Your tastes in timbres differs greatly from mine, and that reflects not only our individuality but our differing backgrounds and resultant musical goals. I am primarily a funk/soul/blues guitarist, wherein crystalline clean tones are hugely important. However, I am also a disciple of the Isley Brothers' Ernie Isley, who usually played leads with distortion (probably because HE was a disciple of the late, great Jimi Hendrix, who played with the Isleys before becoming a star in his own right and even lived in the Isleys' home for a time). Unlike Hendrix, Ernie played over a soul/funk background, which made distortion-laced leadwork MUCH more attractive (for reasons too politically INcorrect to state here) to the boy that I was then. This fact means that I switch back and forth between pristine, jazzy-clean rhythm parts and heavily-distorted lead parts. Not many amps in my experience can handle both without help. My digital modellers handle those tasks with ease. I believe your ENGL can, too. That said, my modellers beat that ENGL in one important metric: Price! My solution I can afford and have afforded. I'd have to knock over a bank before I could get that ENGL! Since I don't have time to do time, you can imagine that I'll stick with my DigiTechs and my Zoom!😎❤️️🎸‼️

    So, prior to buying this amp, I've already had the E670 Special Edition. When I received my Savage 120, it only took me a day to decide I wanted to return it. To me, the discontinued E670 can get really close with the Savage feel and sound, but do much more. It didn't make sense to me to keep both. I bought the Invader after returning the Savage and I am happier with it. Between the E670 and the Inavader, they can cover a lot of sounds.

    • @randolphcarlisle2976
      @randolphcarlisle2976 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this comment is a year or more old, but I can confirm what this comment says about the Special Edition E670; you can get really close to a Savage sound and there is a ton of things you can do with it.

    From these 3: I think the sound of the Mesa Boogie is the typical metal snarl, the tone to emulate, much like a Marshall was in the 80s. The other two were either too bright, or hollow sounding, or both.

I was torn between this and the Mesa Mark V 90. The shortage of new Mesa amps at my 2 favorite dealers made the choice for me but I can't see the Mesa being any better than this thing.

      Both are great, personally I prefer the Savage. There's something special about the high gain tone, especially. It's both huge and precise at the same time, still use it on pretty much every recording. The Founders Edition is more versatile, though, especially if you need those old school low gain crunch tones

    What a great amp. Also when you consider, that this amp is 300€ cheaper than a dual rectifier here where I live is a no brainer for me. My first real tube head was the Engl Powerball 2 in 2015. Still have it and still love it

    • @agufish
      @agufish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s true, I’ve been told ENGL is like the European equivalent of Mesa is. Both kick ass and we can pick up a Mesa basically anywhere for a decent price, but ENGL is pricey and hard to find. How does the Powerball compare to the Savage?

    • @TheShadowChevy
      @TheShadowChevy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@agufish I don't have hands on experience on the savage. But once the stores are open again, I will definitely check one out in person.
      The Powerball is a very flexible amp I would say. It can sound crispy clean and chug like a monster at the same time, A very precise tone both on the 2 high gain channels or the clean and chrunch channel.
      For me it can sound a bit too sterile at times, especially when choosing a chrunchy tone. It is too precise for me personally. Then again, I rarely use the chrunch channel. However, this precession really works out for high gain. I never had the problem, that the sound could mud up even with tons of bottom end dialed in.
      The key point for me is that the controls are simple to use. The amp just works with minor effort to the user to produce a great sound. Also, its build like a tank. Gigged with it multiple times and never had an issue. I also love that the amp also has a build in noisegate as well. That's really a feature I wish every amp has.

    It's good head , but I like my Crate Blue Voodoo 120. I can get awesome tone with it & it chugs hard . If you can find one ,they're under a grand!

      @@agufish no , I've heard of the BV 150 & 300 though. The 300 is a BEAST & hard to find.

    I got the Powerball 2 and I´m happy with it. Nice clean and the high gain channel 3 and 4 are great too. And then i saw this video with the savage. Would you say its worth to buy the savage when i already got a great amp? Can someone explain the difference between the PB 2 and the savage? I think the savage has way more low end.

    • @bludredrobin4900

      I have a Powerball 1 and a Savage 120 Mk1. Have owned the PB for 12 years and the Savage for 8 years. VERY, very, very different sounding amps. The PB is more scooped, industrial, saturated sounding, and I love it. The Savage is more organic, but still saturated, bigger bottom end and has a very aggressive roar. Savage is KIND OF like if you take a Powerball and a Marshall and mix them together. But, don’t get me wrong, the Savage is just as high gain and modern as the PB, but in a very different way.

    Any chance you could get your hands on the Engl Metalmaster (head or combo) for a review?

    Been thinking about getting a ENGL because of ESP, but not sure yet 🤔. Doing some research on this one, the Fireball 100, and the Invader II 150.

    Hey, how thick and chewy would you say the Savage is? Not too dry?
    Thanks!

    • @bludredrobin4900
      @bludredrobin4900 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Savage 120 MK1, and even with a smaller transformer compared to the new one, it is VERY thick and chewy; you can really dig in when you palm mute and the amp responds and tracks very dynamically. The Savage is not as saturated as a Powerball (no amp is, lol), but it has a very good amount of saturation. With all of the knobs and switches you can actually add/remove some saturation, but standard it is pretty saturated while also being very detailed with beautiful note separation.

    Damnnn you have hella amps. Crazy. I liked when you turned down the mids. whats your favorite amp for low mid/ or mid scooped? I like the dual rec. it monster with low end. But I've just been eye balling this amp. Something about the savage, sound looks and options that just makes me want to get it.

    Do you find this amp sounds more harsh or brittle compared to the Fireball? The FB100 seems to sound fatter or warmer compared to the Savae or a Diezel Herbert for example. Thanks! Great video.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Been trying to get my hands on a Fireball/any Diezel to test out for the last 12 months. It's been difficult lol. Never played through either of them,, so all I can say that out of all my boutique amps, the Savage sounds the best and not harsh at all (unless you decide to dial it in that way lol), in my opinion :)

      @@agufish Thanks!
      My amps are a BFG modded Mesa Dual Rec, Mesa Mark V and PRS Archon.
      I love the Mark IV mode for leads. Itay be my favorite for leads, but I wish I could get the darker, thick rhythm tones I want on channel 2 so that I could use channel 3 for lead. I struggle getting both. I find Mark IV mode lacks a bit for rhythm but I'll mess with it more.
      Maybe the Savage can do this? Or a Revv Gen 3?
      So harsh is wrong word. Fireball seems. Fatter and beefier from comparisons I hear to the Savage.
      I want to sell my Mark V but worried to lose that Mark IV lead, unless the Savage can do that smooth liquid lead!? I bet with channel 4 and the contour or mid boost, it could!?
      I'm curious about Savage 120 Mk II vs. Revv Gen 3.
