Good to see Naomi is looking for other races - that hard training will pay off for whichever event you manage to get in and great to see Gareth is planning ahead for London in the Spring - Just forget running in Valencia - it's a shocking tragedy and life is more important than running after all
Seen your comments, and have massive respect for you cancelling. I've done the same. Frustrating for many reasons and maybe the situation will improve by 1st December, but ultimately I wasn't sure if the event will come across badly, so it just didn't feel right to go.
I believe it is not for us runners to say whether the holding the marathon will help or hinder the recovery process. In my opinion, this decision should be made by the authorities in Valencia and we should respect that decision, either way. If they decide that holding the marathon will be positive to the recovery process (both from a psychological and a financial perspective) then as runners we should support that decision. I'm not saying my view is correct, but just stating my opinion.
Personally I don't think you should go, regardless if it goes ahead. A lot of the locals are very angry with the way the government just left them to die and suffer. Just imagine the look if the marathon goes ahead with thousands of police officers and medical assistance over the course, but they couldn't give that service to the locals that were left to fend for themselves and you know how many died and how many lost their homes and livelihoods.
Obviously seeing stuff through the media can be different to how it feels on the ground and what is shown in the media as well. Don’t think it would be wise for it to go ahead and/or put pressure on local services, we’ve now cancelled anyway.
Might not be correct decision but I think it will go ahead 35000 runners in Valencia be a boast to the local economy. Enjoying your videos Gareth keep at it 🏃♂️🏃♂️
That’s also the other side of the argument but sometimes financial pressures might not be the morally correct thing… we’ve now cancelled and won’t be attending on the 1st of December.
I’m in the same boat regarding Valencia. Last 2 weeks of training hasn’t gone great due to a hamstring ‘niggle’ Ethically I feel it shouldn’t go ahead. Also hyrox the week before has been delayed for the reasons you mentioned.
Hopefully they cancel the race. It doesn't seem appropriate for it to go ahead, especially given the protests directed towards the regional government.

I agree with you entirely.. and I am registered for this marathon and coming from Canada with family in tow.

They will literally be policing football games with more people attending the week before.

Yep all the other events have seemingly made quick decisions, I suppose it depends on the size of the event.
Describing the week as good after what happened is odd. Even posting about if it will be a marathon. Help people instead ?

Yep, was hoping for an official announcement today, but we’ve now decided we won’t be attending the marathon anyway.
