An extension to my blog, A TH-cam CHANNEL! I will be posting videos and things created on here from now on.... enjoy!
My name is Gareth Cooke, I am a member of the Barnsley Athletic Club. I am documenting my travels, completing races and challenges, overall whilst enjoying my running.
My channel will include a variety of things whilst I'm on the Ramble and on the run. Whether this is talking about the latest news in the running world, a running race I've completed, my typical training week or nutrition involved. I'm also an avid running shoe connoisseur, and will regular buy a new pair to try out and have a go at! So keep listening, keep watching, and Just Keep Running!
The title ‘therunningmaninblue’ came from choosing to wear the same blue top when racing before I joined a running club. I have previously run for Penistone Footpath Runners & Athletic Club; making the transfer to the blue side again in 2021.
Like and Subscribe wherever you can, it helps out, a lot!

How to improve without running!
As runners there are plenty of things that we do in our day to day lives, a lot of it goes unnoticed, unrecognised. But it’s all about improvement and chasing the improvement of putting one foot in front of the other, whether it is going to be a touch earlier or hydrating correctly throughout the day or taking active breaks away from the office desk. It all caters towards sports performance and seeking those extra seconds off of your personal best. Over the past few months it’s allowed me to reflect and running is in nature a simple sport, but there is so much more involved in it that we don’t necessarily see!
So take a watch to see what I’ve been up to, and how I’m seeking improvement in running. Without actually lacing up the trainers to get out and run.

Brass Monkey Half Marathon - is this the place to come for a personal best?
มุมมอง 1.8K12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
A fixture in our calendar, an ever present, its local enough. It’s fast, flat, promises a strong field and churns out personal best after personal best throughout the first person to the last. It’s always cold, fresh into the new year and an enjoyable day out in York, the ‘capital’ of Yorkshire. Training is on the up, marathon training looming on the horizon line. Setting a line in the sand for...

The Adidas Evo SL, the introduction of the up-tempo daily running shoe. For those days where you want to lift the pace, and still call it an easy run. The long run, do it all, non-carbon plated daily trainer. Affordable, soft, the latest technology, what else could you want from this offering from Adidas. With some super grippy continental rubber, don’t let it fool you, it’s definitely one of t...
Should you delete Strava? Love it or hate it?
มุมมอง 83614 วันที่ผ่านมา
Love it or hate it, it’s a platform that I dare say 99% of runners use. It has its pro’s and a list of cons. When the clock strikes midnight on New Years Eve, it finds itself on a list of resolutions for many runners to come off of strava and play down their interaction with the app. It can support your running, hinder your development, act as a source of inspiration or resource of knowledge. Strength & Conditioning is a necessity for runners // rehabbing my achilles
มุมมอง 46021 วันที่ผ่านมา
Every runner loves to avoid it, neglects it, doesn’t prioritise it, but as soon as the injury comes knocking we’re straight back into the gym to make it better. Strength and conditioning is something we should always be prioritising all year round, to keep us fast, keep us fresh and keep us strong. Take a look to see how I got on this week inside the gyms walls, how simple you can make your own...
Hull parkrun: SANTAS everywhere for this Christmas in the park // fastest in 10 weeks

Parkrun and Christmas… it goes together like carrots and peas! There isn’t anything sweeter than the series of 4 parkruns around Christmas, kicking off with the Saturday before Christmas special at Hull parkrun for us. Back on the original course, after using the alternative route for the last few months. With typical December weather, dark, cold, windy and miserable. The amount of Santas and C...
Travellers 6: perhaps the hilliest road race in Yorkshire?
มุมมอง 1.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
The Travellers 6, a low key race, local, organised by Denby Dale Athletic Club and costs £12! The buffet food afterwards is always a plenty and the course is nothing other than hilly, with no flat stuff in between. 800ft of climb you’ll find on the hills of Denby Dale. It isn’t for the faint hearted, taking place in December it always demands exceptionally lovely weather… Naomi entered this one...
Running the Valencia Marathon: come and spend the weekend with us!
มุมมอง 2.9Kหลายเดือนก่อน
The Valencia Marathon! It’s the fastest race and marathon event worldwide, in the year of 2024 there were over 5000 sub 3 hour finishers, an unbelievable achievement and the field was quite literally stacked. With groups upon groups of runners all out there on the streets of Valencia aiming to conquer their own goals. The months, years of training all coming towards this event for most. Up unti...

Running the Doncaster 10k, with the aftermath of Storm Bert, high winds and rain. It wasn’t the most ideal conditions for fast running, with around 3000 entrants. The Doncaster 10k is a big city feel event, setting off from the Race Course and venturing into the city centre, before embarking on a short out and back before finishing at the race course. On a typical day, it promises fast times, s...
Are you running balanced? How to understand and improve ground contact balance? Garmin dynamics
มุมมอง 9642 หลายเดือนก่อน
Our Garmin gives us some interesting running dynamics, sometimes with not a lot of information on what they actually mean or how we can improve them. One of the most important in my own training is Ground contact time balance, the amount of time we spend utilising our right or left leg. Is one leg stronger than the other? Is there an injury that is dictating your ability to perform. How can we ...
Training week and what’s happening with the Valencia Marathon? Will it go ahead? Discussion!
มุมมอง 1.9K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Training for a marathon is hard, is a battle, between the mind, the physical, the social, and life. It can consume your life, take over your world and it takes some real strength at times. It peaks, troughs, nothing is ever linear, in anything. Knee deep into what is the Valencia Marathon block and Valencia has been knocked as a city, raising a doubt as to whether the marathon will be going ahe...
How to recover after an injury // different types of muscle contractions for a runner!

The comebacks are always the best bit, I love a project and the best project you can make out of this, is yourself. It’s been a month since I last ran what I would call ‘properly,’ I’m now fully in with the recovery and rebuilding of strength. Injuries are all a part of the journey and the story of being a runner. It’s how you overcome them that matter the most. No point sitting back and gettin...

A part of the running journey, notoriously, is picking up the odd niggle here and there. It goes hand in hand with progress, barriers, achievements, setbacks. It’s how you overcome them, use them as a tool for learning to educate yourself more and more about your body. It’s almost as guaranteed as death and taxes. This week I’ve been on the rehab train, doing everything I can to manage my niggl...

Thanks for another interesting and informative video Gareth - As a much older runner , I have taken vitamins for many years - definitely needed in the dark Winter months - I had a TIA ( mini stroke in 1997 ) so also take Statins as a precaution as well - I have had arthritis in my knees and feet now for over a decade so I don't do as much running as I would like to - but walk plenty and do indoor fitness cycling and plenty of leg raises reps on light weights as alternatives to keep things going . I have painful arthritis flares up from time to time so it is hard to even plan things day by day and I do not enter many events now months in advance as I might not even get on the start line . Sleep is a problem as you get older - broken sleep and less hours - not even including the midnight toilet visits !! -Hopefully I will keep on plodding for a few more years yet !!
I was out supporting Tad H runners - spotted you running through Appleton Roebuck (7m) looking strong, great run Naomi!
I live in compression tights😂😂your right best recovery aid imo😊
I had a full blood panel done at the cost of £200+. Came back low iron and ldl borderline. Doc didn’t want to go off test results so did his own. Iron ok (did supplement whilst waiting second test) ldl elevated all other bios good.
Iron deficiencies are common amongst runners but not very well-known. Good thing videos like this are raising awareness.
Hello thanks again
Congrats on this incredible result!
Congrats on the PB Naomi - great running!
Another great video 👏
You guys should get an Insta360 head cam/s and microphones
Mega congrats on that brilliant PB and big love to the doggies too 🙂
Brilliant Naomi - reight chuffed x
Congratulations on the pb Naomi xx. Loved the footage again.
The last 2 minutes of the video had some extra entertainment I see 😂😂😂
Just a preview of my other channel 🤣 I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Nobody mention naked Gareth in the mirror! 😂
That made it through the edit 🤣 Naomi said to me, you don’t need to edit that I’ve done a right job! Better work some TH-cam magic and blur it out.
Superb running today Naomi, well done on the PB 👏 I also ran today and enjoyed the race. You'd already finished as I ran in, but I wanted to say thanks for the shout-out cheer on as I ran past. Also thanks to Gareth who actually gave me kudos on Strava 🫣😅 Good work to both of you 🙌
Brilliant, well done Naomi!
Congratulations on the new PB Naomi! 🎉
Gotta say I loved this, excellent supporting!
is it slippery on snow or rain ?
I think this raffle is to trickle it out and introduce it to the public, and due to the manufacturing limitation, and lack of units for global consumption.
Really enjoying my Evo SL….. using mainly as a daily atm, need to get some pace in them. Didn’t win a raffle, Start fitness had them for sale just before Xmas.
Noticed today that start fitness have them on, probably pick another pair up in a couple of weeks.
Looks like a decent shoe. Not too sure about the raffle nonsense though, like you said it just seems like a marketing gimmick. I had 4 pairs of the Boston 9 so if it's anything like those it might be worth checking out. If you can find the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 on a good discount I'd recommend them. Used mine for a fast 5k up to 20 mile long run and Puma Grip has even been good on the ice this week 🧊 200 miles in and not a lot of wear.
I’ve a pair of the Deviate’s. Really good shoe and like you say, super grippy!
Compared to the Pro 3, would you say it's a lot softer? (and how about vs. Prime X OG if you tried it, which I found soft whereas the Prime X2 was much firmer)
Same foam as the Pro 3, and feels a touch firmer / less race day pop without the carbon plate. But a great training and fast interval to accompany a faster race day shoe
@therunningmaninblue Firmer without the carbon? I'm confused, I would have thought it would be softer without it.
I'm 46% L and 54% right, and am getting hip problems on my right side when running hard. Does that mean I am weak on my left side and am over-compensating on my right, so I should strengthen my left side? Or does it mean my right side is weaker because if I am spending less time on my left, isn't my ankle/leg stiffer and stronger on my left side as proved by less ground contact time on the left? Can't quite get my head around it.
It could be either of the two, would be wrong of me to make the assumption… you’re better off seeing a physio / someone who specialises in Biomechanics, so that they can properly analyse your movement patterns. It could be a simple tweak here or there to address whichever side is weaker or working too hard. I’m still 46/54 this week too, but marginally improving. Best of luck!
id be pretty certain people open strava account without ever intending to use for fitness.... / and or they are hacked
Perhaps. There’s a few people I know on strava that have never logged anything.
could store all on garmin connect , but trainer app wont upload to Garmin so ..
Quality vid as always. I have a similar video coming soon as part of my back to basics series. Who’s been saying they are coming off social media?
A few different new year, new me over on instagram. Looks as though they’re back on now though 😅
@@therunningmaninblue ahhh, they couldn't resist! I can take it or leave it.No biggie LOL
I personally love it but all points very valid. I started running back in 2013 and used an old app Endomondo and over the years using various brands of devices, Strava has been a great platform to merge all this into 1. I get inspired mostly, but also appreciate it is social media (of which I aren't a fan) and can spot fakery at 10 paces lol Anyways, great topic, cheers :-)
Ha ha first to like and comment.
Thanks!
I've got a love-hate relationship with strava tbf. It's probably because I see it as another form of fb. So I don't upload for ages. Then I do it in one go. Plus, bouts of depression stop me from thinking about uploading. Hmm 😒 🤔 😒 good to listen to varying ideas and thoughts. Yeah naomi you hit nail on head there's loads of what seems positive stuff on there and not both where there's struggles too. It's probably another reason I don't upload frequently. I'll be at wombwell 5 and i still need a place for dewsbury 10k. So looking for one soon.
Good luck at Wombwell and hopefully you’ve had some luck in getting a Dewsbury place 🤞
@therunningmaninblue that's reminded me i need to change my club status with wombwell Gareth. Yes, I got a place at dewsbury now. Demons are now racing about my head. Massive confidence loss. Can't wait for your next video.
I am at brass monkey so will see you there
Good luck this weekend pal!
Another interesting vid - I still write my mileage down in a diary - got a box full of them up in the loft since 1979 !! -- but if I do over distance in a race or run - say 10kms for an example I book 6 miles so I probably done myself out of hundred of miles over the years - very rarely count warm ups or cool downs as well !! I have a garmin watch which I got as a retirement present from Tesco a few years ago and it does the job good enough for me -Garnin just didn't work for me - but each to their own I suppose
Should say Strava didn't work for me !!
I have a love/hate relationship with STRAVA. I keep it private and only add or accept people I speak to. I hide the time and my start & finish.
Those pesky GPS PB's. It's even worse when you hit a PB and the distance comes up short. Although I agree Power of 10 is king.
If it wasn’t for Strava I wouldn’t have known about your running club I just joined. Every other kind of social media I’d ban. I call them phone zombies when I’m out running and their walking and scrolling in middle of pavement in way.
Good video, I personally just came off to hide my location and just get along with training while I'm away. its still on there just private.
People drive to strava bash😂😂😂even i dont do that😂😂😂
I got rid of Strava over a year ago - mind you I didn't have it that long anyway !!
Thanks for sharing your S&C stuff in the gym. More videos like these please. Btw you’re doing yourself a favour by taking your time to recover fully and not racing. Also isn’t 80 miles a week a bit too much for your achilles injury?
Hi not sure if you did a video for Rother Valley which you did on 28th December but I was there and just wanted to say both you and Naomi ran really well, Unsurpisngly. I saw you both in the cafe afterwards and Naomi waved at my little girl, which she then mentioned on the way back to the car in the form of “person, waved at Mimi (her nickname for herself 😂) so thank you to Naomi for that, she clearly appreciated the little wave!
That’s sweet! Thank you it means a lot. I’ve just shown Naomi and she remembers waving in the cafe as well. Unfortunately we didn’t film at the weekends parkrun, maybe the next one we do there 🤞
Great video, thanks!!
Shockwave ultrasound works on my Achilles better than anything else
Gareth ive taken s n Cs and gym so much more seriously now. Thank you for the tips. Ive been unwell of late in the form of exhaustion and chronic fatigue syndrome after long covid. This in tern causes stress and further exhaustion. Rest, nutrition, sleep has been my learning curve. Lost another car lol so that caused more stress. I completely agree with you with regards other facets of being a runner. I'm hopefully turning a corner now. Thank you and naom for excellent advice and showing your path in runnung.
A very good insight into S&C, thanks for sharing and will add some into my programme. Wishing every success in the New Year to both you and Naomi and hope you regain the excellent fitness you achieved in 2024.
Many happy memories of East Park as a kid. 🎉😊
Have a great Xmas to you both and wishing that the channel goes from strength to strength in the New Year 👍
Well done Gareth Naomi Merry Christmas 🎄 from Thailand
Merry Christmas to you both!
Merry Christmas Gareth and Naomi - Our Santa parkrun was at Concord yesterday
I did this but was one of the slower runners 😂 I’m so amazed at how you can keep that kind of pace going in the conditions we had on Sunday! Amazing! I only started running a early this year and my hope is next year I can do it under an hour. Well done and will be subscribing!
