"Hershey Prison:" Workers EXPOSE Brutal Working Conditions At A Hershey Factory

  • The workers who make Reese's Peanut Butter Cups describe going to work as a stay in "Hershey's prison." Workers have been forced to work 70+ days straight, receive constant forced overtime, and are punished for time off. Now they’re unionizing to take back their power.

If Milton Hershey were alive today he would be extremely upset and terribly ashamed of the way his company was being run. For someone who went above and beyond to take such great care of his employees he would be horrified that his name, hard work, and reputation had become synonymous with this greedy and unethical CEO and the rest of this company’s money grubbing board members!!😡

Although some of Hershey's other plants are unionised and have been for a long time, the working conditions on cacao plantations in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana are far worse than even in their US non-union factories and have been compared to slavery. That being said, all their factory workers and all their agricultural workers deserve unions, employee ownership or sectoral bargaining. th-cam.com/video/7Igm4MS8Oqk/w-d-xo.html

So I've been boycotting Nestle for decades due to a laundry list of bad behavior. Now it looks like I have to add Hershey to my boycotts. What's even more disappointing is the fact that it's a female CEO behaving JUST LIKE A MAN. When will these "business" people learn to follow the Golden Rule. Well, I'll be watching to see how unionization progresses. To keep me buying Hershey products the union must succeed. Failure means 1 more company I boycott. And BTW I've been boycotting some companies for decades. I love Sweet Tarts but I haven't bought or eaten any in over 30 years. This is really sad to hear and despicable. Mr. Hershey originally built the factory, town, parks, and housing for his workers. So they had a healthy quality of life at work and while off work. He valued their labor and they were treated with dignity, gratitude, and respect. He has employees strike during the Great Depression because they felt they were having pay cuts, slave like hours ect.... Employees actually stopped production, barred the doors, and occupied the 🏭factories, grinding everything to a abrupt halt, until Hershey and his Executives listened to their grievances and corrected the problems. Hershey did just that and the workers happily started production up again and both parties were pleased. I guess Hershey is looking for a repeat since they are choosing bullying over communication with their workers.

Big difference: in Europe they strike and demonstrate over the weekend and go to work on Monday, they don't have to worry about losing their job over it.. Here you demonstrate and strike and the likelihood is that if your boss finds out you will be gone within a month. In comparison to Europe we have next to no labor laws. In Europe they have Labor Courts, the judges are government employees and were not elected through some right wing organization like the Federal Society. I did belong to a union but guess what. The company had the same absentee policy as Hersheys. If you were not out on benefits, you’d take a vacation day so you’d not be suspended for absenteeism. And we did have forced overtime also for a time. So, unions do help with benefits, but the company can also hire “contract workers” that are paid more as they have no benefits. And because of their added experience they were hired for transfer positions before the employees were. Be aware of this. Also, at contract time there were layoffs to make up for a higher wage.

I don't want a union, and yes, things need to be worked out, and yes, management is working on it, but in a very complicated way that I don't think they can handle. I have been with the Hershey company for a very long time.

Hershey …….shame, shame!!! I’m so sick of corporate greed on the backs of workers. Will think twice about purchasing Hershey products now. Good luck to all of you!

With the exception of Montana all states are Right to Work states. Translated your employer has the right to fire you for or without cause. Glaballly there are only a handful of countries still upholding this law. This law goes back to 1898, the old master/servant relationship.

I don’t work in a union now, but I have before when I was in another line of work and I loved it. I think just about every if not every company should have a union.

The big corporations are relearning the lessons of the past when it comes to unions. I fear we workers need to be ready to lay down our lives once more like our predecessors as these companies will not give up a single cent they don't have to without a fight.

This goes on where I work at Blues City Brewery in Memphis Tn and even more during the pandemic we worked we were told that we didn’t qualify for hazard pay but we found out different they took our sick time and told us that we have to accumulate the time on RTO time we get three days that we can only use quarterly they tell us how to take our vacation time and so much more we was just on the news for a chemical issue and they had the employees to go back inside to work which cause a lot of employees to have health issues one lady has been having issues with her version they use products like soap on the lines that contain acid that causes respiratory problems and so much more

Years ago Hershey threatened to go to Mexico unless they got a tax break. They did; so they stayed. Crappy management produces crappy conditions. Crappy workers produces companies to bail to third world cheap labor areas. Unions protect the good workers as well as the crappy workers. Think about that for a moment.

I worked at a company and my first few days there I got in trouble for something I didn’t know. You know I was new. They wrote me up it was a dumb thing so small every other job would have said. Now you know be more careful. Whatever I thought week 5 years later I never got a raise so I asked for one. They gave me a write up And used the first one to fire me. Later I saw the manager at the bar he was 3 sheets to the wind. He told me they need me back the place went to shit after I left. He told me everyone gets a write up the first week so when you ask for a raise they write you up a second time and fire you.

Nothing new. Milton Hershey used orphans from his own orphanage as free labor when I was a kid.
