    Dear Lionel and team. I attribute my return to the sport because of you and I can only imagine I'm not the only one. You have such a beautiful way of motivating our community using art and science. You're humble, articulate, transparent, and incredibly talented. You deserve all the sponsors in the world. I believe you've done more for our sport than all the corporate dollars being thrown into it. Whatever results you get going forward, you've earned 1st place in my heart and I bet thousands of others, and dare I say, that's worth more than first place in Kona. Thank you.

    I think a pretty common thing is to sleep at a higher elevation than the actual workouts when you're doing an altitude training camp. I think this is for the same reason you mentioned about finding the sweet spot for when the intensity gets too low because you have to workout at such horrible conditions.

    • @paulmelde919
      @paulmelde919 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is exactly why Flagstaff is popular with the endurance community. You can train low with less than an hours drive and drive back up to recover. The problem right now is training low outside in the Arizona summer due to the extreme heat.

  • @gordonsmith3324

    Train low and sleep high. You want the physiological adaptation from altitude which mainly comes from living at altitude. You also want the proper training load, resistance, etc. so training at sea level is the ideal way to achieve that goal. Nut shell: train low and sleep in an oxygen tent set to 8,000+ feet. Next, the reason you are drinking more at altitude is because elevation decreases your antidiuretic hormone which means you will excrete (urinate out) more fluid than you do at sea level. Altitude training will make you more metabolically efficient. I.e. your mitochondria are going to be more efficient. If you were to spend more time altitude, you would eventually see your numbers return to normal or nearly normal. Note: when you come down from the altitude you generally have a two week (14 day) window to go and race before things go south in a big way. Also, you really need to have a running coach evaluate your running stride. You're leaving efficiency and therefor speed on the table with the way you are running. Off of the top of my head, and I'm a distance running coach, I say about 15-20% aerobically based upon what I see in your stride. With all this said, I am a huge fan! Be well, race fast and have fun!

    @User85306 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great and inspiring insights like every time Lionel!💪🏻😎🚀
    Have you ever considered, to go down in altitude to do your more intense workouts. Like that you can train aerobically and recover, both at high altitude, without compromising too much on your power and speed.

    I don't know if there is any correlation to this, but I live at exactly 7k and my max HR is about 20 beats lower here than at sea level. Something to do with the heart being a muscle and needing more oxygen to pump faster, thus altitude training should in theory lower ones heart rate overall while training or racing there. He's also not training at his max HR so not sure how that plays into things either, but there might be an effect.

    • @CHRISROY999
      @CHRISROY999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your HR will decrease at altitude closer to sea level (Lower altitude around 760 torr/mmHg average) because of atmospheric pressures. The less atmospheric pressure you have the harder it is for gas (Oxygen) to diffuse into your body/lungs. So the higher altitude still has the same oxygen percentage (21% in the atmosphere) although the pressures would be less, meaning your body has to work harder to get more oxygen to diffuse. This is why people take oxygen tanks to climb mount Everest etc.
