Hey Lionel… it’s Niko. Hopefully you still remember me from about 10 years ago with C3.
I fully remember when you started as my camp counsellor and doing my first 40k bike ride with you and doing hockley hill twice (we got up the first time and I was DYING and you said “great let’s go back down and do it again”). I remember when you developed a whole training plan for me for Canada games. Anyways I think at the time I didn’t have the right mindset or belief in myself… but I still remember your work ethic and it definitely was instilled in me.
I remember doing 1 mile repeats at the 800m horse track and I was supposed to do 6:40min/mile and it was pouring rain and I felt like I couldn’t do it and you gave me this whole speech about how it’s all mental limits and not a physical limit.
I remember a similar thing when we were doing an obstacle course at the play ground and I was trying to break 30seconds and I had to redo it over and over until I broke 30 seconds.
Life has had lots of ups and downs… I finished my masters and I’m now in law school and I now compete in a different 3 phase sport (Schutzhund with my dog)…. But I want you to know that every little thing you’ve done has had an impact and you may not think people remember… but they do.
I saw a comment the other day about the social utility of Lionel sanders… and I think this speaks to that.

Appreciate your desire for transparency, Lionel. It's hard to believe Collin is the only one. More testing, more data, more transparency is certainly the right trajectory for the sport. And no, do not stop talking about it!

I think it was Mark Allen who mentioned that athletes may not feel like they have a safe space to report a potential unclean athlete. It's hard to bring to light without personal evidence. I think more random testing is part of the answer.

Triathlon absolutely 100% needs more scrutiny for doping. Good idea on taking 20% of purses and applying to testing, etc. Good idea on *requiring* more data sharing (but what data? and data can be manipulated). Ultimately the penalties need to be more harsh. Longer bans, sometimes including lifetime bans. Financial penalties, including retroactive. And, some things need to be criminalized. Maybe some money should be set aside to go after (law suit) a doper or two from some yet untested legal angle: in other words, they effectively steal money, so maybe they can be pursued on that. Ask PTO what legal routes they are considering. Ask them if they can, at a minimum, get a legal consult on how to legally pursue dopers. With that information, it may be possible and worthwhile to make a few examples out of some dopers. It is sad and I don't wish that sort of penalty on anyone in general.... but law suits (and anything else) should become the known cost for doping. HARSH penalties are required for deterrence.

Further scrutiny is definitely needed, and it shows great integrity for Lionel to be stepping into the spotlight rather than away from it out of fear. It's absurd that the 'investigation' into Collin's doping did not involve contacting his training partner & housemate, or his coach.

Giannis has the best take on this - "There is no failure in sports". The journey is what we are here to see. The fire of competition keeps us engaged because the competition makes a great story. Look at the dude that won the Boston Marathon, nobody gives a damn because nobody knows his story. Keep living this life that inspires us to do better. Growth is the success.

No failure in sport, I said this exact thing yesterday. Unless you finish 2nd it's all a spectrum. People choose not to compete because they can't accept "failure". This is just poor sports psychology as it leads to you quitting the journey. It really is the taking part that counts 🤣

I think the fact that so many top level pros are speaking out about this shows that there is a need/desire for a clean sport. This will have to be a PTO level agreement for out of competition/in competition testing. But the conversations are a good start.

      @steeleronfire7030 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Agreed on how many pros are speaking out about it shows a need/desire for a clean sport. @@steeleronfire7030 I think it‘s a bit naïve to assume that speaking out means they most likely don‘t dope and not saying anything means they have something to hide. In the end words are just words and they can mean absolutely nothing.

Hey Talbot, Erin, Lionel, thanks for the vid. Huge fan. 41 y o dad 3 kids. Started tri at 38. Train hard as I can. Madly in love w sport. Means a lot to me. Consume enough tri social media to really frustrate my wife :).
This one really hurt. As Lionel pointed out in last vid. We do it because of a mad passion for seeing how good we can be and how far we can push our personal limits. Guys like me are inspired by pros and seeing performances that show us what’s possible and push us to be the best we can be.
Since you asked….a few thoughts: my gut is you are undervaluing the leverage you have as a high profile pro. I don’t think you should give up prize $. I think PTO should pay to get great scientists and a great testing program deployed. Don’t know their budget. Don’t think it should be public (but maybe it should be shared w the pros given their ethos?) but if what Sam R. Says is true then they have major major private equity bucks this is an investment they should make cause it’s the right thing to do. It might cost way more than 20% of prize money. But they say they have the patient capital to run it right and run it negative for years until it’s a major sport…then they should invest in this. I get that it’s really hard for pros to say “I won’t race PTO races if you don’t do this” because your giving up prize money and sponsors might drop you. But it seems you guys do generally manage to skip some big PTO prize purses to pursue your primary goals.
If just 5 or 10 of the big big pros could get on same page and insist on a serious anti doping program and say your frequent participation depends on it what is PTO gonna do? What are your sponsors gonna do? Nobody is going to watch a PTO race without the top 6, 7, 8 guys. I fucking love watching tri. But I won’t watch a race without and of the 5 or 10 best guys. Then PTO never gets big tv contracts. Never reaches its goals. If you, Jan, Laidlow negotiate tough w PTO what is canyon going to do…drop you all and find some other guys? Maybe I’m naive and they would. But gotta figure they’d be taking a major step down to replace u and giving up all their exposure. Lionel seems like a pretty good guy to lead that group. And if all but one or two will get on board….well then?
Anyhow I’m just a fan and that was such a Monday morning QB post, but you asked for it!
Good business for PTO to keep it clean bc people like me don’t care what drugged ppl can do. We care to see how far people like Lionel can push it. Without that sport never grows. Right now tri is a teeny tiny sport (again maybe I’m naive and ignorant since I’m American) the biggest pros seem way bigger than PTO or anything else so I think they should throw their weight around. Check out Billie Jean King and tennis in the 70s. Not saying you have to mutiny like that but the sport is dear to us all and maybe worth fighting for. We all hope it blows up like tennis or MMA for world to see how great it is to push your limits over long distances in water and on land in amazing places.

Love listening / watching Lionel... He has the same interrogations as us age groupers but with a "pro" ability. The idea of a % of the purse allocated to anti-doping is a good one, maybe not 20%, but 10% should work. + Biological passport + posting stats & training & random testing even during "off" season. its all about reducing the possibility of doping... Good luck with St George!

Every sport has their own way of testing for PEDS. I did womens professional natural bodybuilding until Covid started. The only time we were tested (urine test) was if we placed on the podium. But every single athlete amateur and pro had to polygraph the week of the show. If you were caught it was 7 year ban.
I also don’t think you’re a bad judge of character. Having faith in people and the sport isn’t a bad thing. It’s just completely devastating when something like this comes up especially with a close friend /competitor in the sport. Your transparency and desire for information to create more transparency in the sport is definitely recognized.

loss of innocence. it is not a failing of Lionel's character to not suspect Collin. That wasn't naivety, but purity. Now not just Lionel but the whole sport has lots its innocence. Eventually things will reach a new equilibrium like they have in other sports, but until then there will be a period of imbalance and internal and external scrutiny. It is very tempting to put a lot of energy towards this, but it's probably best to stay focused on the things that have always guided you. Most people got into triathlon to push themselves not to speculate about who is clean or to prove that they are. To some extent Lionel can use his influence and insight to help resolve these issues, but there are also a lot of other people who will be looking into it. Increased scrutiny is probably a good thing and will likely happen, but the more extreme proposals here are probably unwise. The sport will likely never be totally free from suspicion again.

  • @kmlancer
    @kmlancer ปีที่แล้ว +4

Lionel- RE: I can appreciate how Colin popping positive would hit you so hard, especially after living together, training together, and forming a friendship. And you, from everything I've learned about you through your blogs, interviews, etc., and your talking about your own substance abuse and recovery-once you made that decision, you walked away, absolutely, from any form of substance use/abuse. That's part of why it's hitting you so hard- you just can't comprehend it. Those that are successful in maintaining sobriety can typically point to a moment when they made the decision- "Never again." I know I did. For some, the desire for attention, success, plus the constant focus on pushing limits, leads them to blur lines, and rationalize "chipping" to start. You know, "just a little bit"; "just this once" and the slippery slope claims another. Not knowing Colin, I can't say for sure, but I've worked in substance abuse for many years, and keeping secrets, thinking hat you're smarter than anybody else, and being a bit scared about losing the feeling of that "good buzz", whatever form it takes, just perpetuates the cycle. Long way around the block to say that's why regular public testing is absolutely necessary. If there is accountability, with consequences, it can give the tempted individual enough of a reality check to say "no way, the risk is not worth the reward." If there are no consequences, there's no reason to change your behavior. 100% agree and support accountability via regular, and random, public drug testing. Good luck in St George, and please tell Trevor I wish him a great race! Respectfully, Kevin M. Lancer, Ph.D.

Trust is required for competition. If you can't trust the people on the start line next to you, you won't be able to push yourself to the limits, and you won't be able to trust the results on the finish line. There needs to be enough accountability to trust the people on the start line next to you.

A lot of triathletes i know come from past dark places and need to do a lot of hard work on themselves and no doubt that transfers in many cases to today's sport. I think more randomised testing both inside and outside of season is a good start. The big thing that not many of us can know, is that our best friends rarely work with us and don't take paycheques away from your other friends. That reality is unique to half of the professional sport scene. To think he is the only one dipping in A sauce, would be naive. For you to ditch a friend, at the end of the day belongs to you and him. Time will tell you. Your friend will need you at some point. Stay true to yourself. 18:56

I always love how triathlon embraces technology and change. When it comes to doping, triathlon should lead the pack. If the PTO is looking to revolutionize the pro aspect of triathlon, then innovative doping control is going to be vital in that. If they get to the point where they want to be, then for there to be any shred of integrity, their doling system will have to lead the world in endurance sports. And to answer your question, yes you should be scrutinized and I’m really disappointed you weren’t approached yet by PTO reps (I personally do not suspect you of any malfeasance). Thirdly, now we need to know what Talbot did in Canadian Tire.
PS, love the new intro Talbot

You put money on the line…and now incentives are different. Do I think LS would cheat for $5000. Nope. Would LS cheat for $100,000. No. I believe you are clean. But I believe the stakes are higher now. I believe sponsorship is fucked. You are now a TH-camr to feed your family. Not all athletes can do that…but they still want to feed their families. Listen to Colin. Really hear him. Why did he cheat? Are other guys in same position? Yes. That needs scrutiny. The whole sport from top to bottom. Not just the doping. But the money. Lionel’s conflicted emotions re Colin is a pattern that has occurred often in pro cycling. For example, Phil Gaimon has written about similar emotions in his relationship with Tom Danielson. As for how to move forward, transparency with respect to baseline fitness levels and performance progression is key. Any meteoric rise in performance is a red flag. The other red flag is when coaching becomes over medicalized or combined with specialist doctor support. If triathlon evolves in that direction, then something along the lines of cycling’s bio-passport will be required in order to make doping prohibitive to all but the most well funded athletes.

PTO gives 100k$ to the winner of their races, World athletics gave 70k$ to the world champ in Eugene : i know there are more sports and more athletes in a WA championship so the money need to be divided, but my point is if you are ready to give this much money, you have to make everything you can to assure that there is no shade thrown on the winner ! Yes you are right, PTO and Challenge and Ironman and World Triathlon and Superleague need to do more testings. At races, at home, at training camps... If all the organisations agree, you could have a really good frequency for tests

You nailed so many right points here: yes testing, yes full disclosure, yes to a full and thorough investigation into the case of Collin. The more open we are, the less chances there are for repetition. We don’t want to go through the same storyline as in cycling. It should be morally embedded into our sport to do it fair. You gain so much and remain healthy, everybody. Remain vocal about this, Lionel. I think you are on the right path for bringing this to debate.

I'm not shocked by the this but what I am shocked about is that more testing isn't being done? I think it should be like any professional sport and there should be on going testing. My theory is because amateurs compete right along side the pro's in the same race it's like this wonderful fairy tale that no one wants to spoil.

It’s in all pro sports. Of course it’s in triathlon. In Age group it’s everywhere. Should be testing everyone random every race

Usually don't comment, but since you've asked. There needs to be more research done on PEDs and individual differences in how athletes respond to them. This should obviously be performed for all tiers of the sport.
But more interestingly, *if* there's some magical scenario (to my own skepticism) where the top people are not using PEDs, let's have them go on those PEDs and test their power in a VO2 max test, and see what happens. Or, have those people voluntarily use EPO to run their personal best times, do their best power, etc., and see what happens. We'd be in a whole lot of trouble if they can't demonstrate faster times!
In cycling, running, and swimming, much can be measured directly with accuracy now. Power data in cycling and running, in swimming, perhaps in the future someday we will have new forms of measurement as direct as power. This should be taken advantage of.
Some ideas and suggestions that I believe would grow the sport:
    (1) It would be great to see more power data, heart rate, perhaps real time glucose/lactate monitoring in the very distant future be displayed for viewership. Cycling seems the most realistic to do this with. It would certainly change things.
    (2) Read-only trainingpeaks data! Agreed. Upload all metrics on Strava. This would include race events.
    (3) We want to see what elite-level training and racing does to your hematocrit/Hgb/ferritin levels. How much does your resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate change before a rest period? Certainly the latter can be measured easily.
Doubt any of this would happen, but boy would it make things interesting!

Thanks for not just sweeping this shot under the rug. So disappointed that more of the top as well as the most respected athletes haven’t been more vocal. I’d go so far as to say that their silence is deafening.

There needs to be a standard testing policy throughout all the different brands that put on races that have professionals racing. Race day, regardless of placing, outside random testing and if an athlete tests positive, any/all people that train with them or are coached by the same people should be tested more. But maybe that needs to be put in place and voted on by all pro athletes

Let's try to answer the questions - and collect what's coming up. First: Whats makes this speech of Lionel so special again? Lionel stands for inspiration, emotions, entertainment and delivering always a great show to all of us. We love that. But there ist something more he is bringing to us - he is absolutely living the values of pure sport. This is mostly overlooked, because we are so used to it from him. Now, in a situation where the hole pro triathlon has to be questioned, this position becomes particularly important. And - there is a second thing - Lionel is not afraid to say what's need to be said, also about himself. This enables him to tackle a movement against doping credibly. Second: Doping will never come to an end absolutely. And yes, intelligent people work hard to cheat succesfully. BUT - there is also far too less will to catch dopers now. The system is full of ratholes. Every athlete and trainer out there know that very well. WHY ist that like that? Because event organizers, companies and associations want to do their business. They want to tell the old myths of glory and superhumanity, they always want to tell some heroes journeys. They say it's in the DNA of the sport. Chasing dopers interferes with their business. Third: The credibility of this kind of mainly marketing DNA is directly connected to the REAL credibility of values of the sport in general. And this the also overlooked part of the doping conflict now. There will be no more business based on this DNA. And this should be a huge warning sign for all the big players out there, who are giving a lot of money in the sport, like Disney - and a huge warning sign for the adventurers of the PTO. Disney expects profits. The PTO know, profits need the big show, the stars, the credible fighting for the win. But when sport losses its credibility though INACTION, the big investors act fast and leave too. They fear nothing more than a bad image. Fourth: Lionel has given a call to ACT. And he said what's need to be said: In addition to all the details that need to be checked, it's the responsibility of the entire triathlon community (not only the athletes!) to take decisive action against doping. NOW! Thanks to Lionel and Talbot for sharing! And - alle the best for the upcoming season - to all the athletes out there, who are clean! :-)

It’s the fraud aspect that people are talking about. Financial fraud through big purse earnings and sponsorship deals that would have gone to other athletes. Knowingly committing fraud against a company or another individual is illegal and should be prosecuted. And if found guilty should serve prison time. There is no other reasonable option.

Possible solution: Minimum quota for every Pro athlete, f.e. minimum 4 unexpected out-of-comp tests/year + 4 competition tests. Only receiving 25% of your prize money, the rest on a saving account. You get the 75% (+ interest) ONLY if all (8) drug tests are negative at the end of the season. You have to hurt people where they are hurt most... in their pocket, because the more money is involved in the sport, how more people will be attracted to cheat. Money has no moral compass.

A semi-weekly random draft/lottery for testing 5 of ANY member of PTO.
I.e.- To be a PTO member you must agree to the possibility that you are at random (proven randomization) chosen to be tested in any/or all 26 drug tests throughout the year and results publicly accessible. In order out of competition, it does not matter.

Nice intro that! Music bit weird but.... maybe just me! Lionel, I totally agree about the purse money being put in for the drugs testing... transparency in DATA as well needs to happen to protect the sport. CC did everything he could to hide it from you, just don't understand how he thought it'll be good to do the races after doing all the doping... and potentially break friendships, sponsors and all of that. More on the line than a title. Pity! Hopefully he gets the help he needs and the sport can move on with a bit of broken trust but we shall rebuild with more transparency and trust you're racing with your all with no additional help. Good luck at ST.G! And as always, thanks Talbot!

I think a pro who blatantly cheats (EPO’s and a couple others) should get a lifetime ban from the sport. The small stuff like a substance that was accidentally found in your protein powder or something like that, maybe just put for 1 season. Some people think that it’s hard to navigate that last one but it’s not.. get certified supps.
Triathlon is in a place that they can and should severely penalize athlete for cheating. Something like football really can’t and give 30 chances because it’s so revenue generating. PTO and IM need to get steeeeeap penalties in place while it’s there this push.

  • @fritsgerms3565

Its easy to overscrutinize Collin's doping. Its impossible to 'know' if someone is doping from their behaviour. The only thing to do is to do thorough testing. Both in season and off season testing. Scrutinising Lionel or anybody else is useless. That will just breed distrust and fuel imagined misbehaviour. PTO should just do testing of all the athletes.

  • @tristanguillemette6777

Implement a "whereabouts" system just like olympic sports. Every athletes in the top 30 needs to put a place theyre available for 1h everyday. You have 2 strikes for not being available and third one is a 6 month ban. Otherwise you can be tested anywhere in the world, any day.
Makes no sense that a sport combining 3 extremely difficult sports has no serious testing. Theres scandals in all of these sports on the Olympic level, no shit there's dopers when you combine the 3 and do ultra distances.

The day Collin got popped they should have sent out full panel PED and EPO tests to top 20 men and women that were to be done in the next 24 hours of Collin dirty test. They didn’t though because In my opinion if you bring down a handful of top athletes and tarnish the sport Ironman organization might not recover and this is all about a bottom line at the end of the day. By not sending out request for mass test essentially you make Collin take the brunt of the blow from a problem that is deeper than him almost like a Lance Armstrong situation but instead of saying he didn’t do anything he admitted it.
