Thank you all for your support of this channel. The response to this video has been phenomenal! And yes, I now know how to pronounce “cloche” properly. 😂
@
I’m glad you knew how to pronounce it - I had to look it up! I love learning new things about words… And I love people who don’t deny it if they make a mistake! Thanks!
Great tips! Thank you sir!!
Respect on all your good finds. As a French speaker I can confirm that for your future videos it is simply “klohsh” cloche is the word for “bell” in French. Like the kind that rings as well. Cloché means “clogged” as in a drain
Learn something new everyday.
And in this video, several things…. Thx 🥰 Happy gardening!
Another thing to get is the mesh laundry bags. They are a pretty large size. I use them over my blueberry and raspberry plants , Drape it over a frame of some sort (like a wood frame or a tomato cage) to protect your fruit from being eaten by the birds. Easy to pull up or off, doesn’t impede sunlight and works great
Great idea!!
Such a great idea! Thanks for sharing
I use those to protect my plants from the dreaded Japanese beetles. 🪲 I actually cut them to make a “sheet” so I can just lay them on the plants. Works great!
Thank you for sharing this! Japanese beetles are a disaster for my young apple trees! Got to get some milky spore for the orchard & blueberry area. Thanks again!
Oooo...thanks for the reminder!😊
I can’t believe how many people are complaining about how you pronounce or spell a word!! I think we all understood what he was talking about! Great job! I love your ideas!
I liked the video until cloch-é. Now… I absolutely love it. The first time I saw that word I had to Google the pronunciation. That’s such a difficult word to wrap your head around and I was an English major. You made me feel a lot better.
People have nothing better to do than criticize
First day on the internet?
At least he now learned how to pronounce the word properly! 😊 I have always wondered why youtubers don't check how to pronounce words that they don't know before they make a video going out to thousands of people. Some young kids may be watching the videos and then learn how to pronounce the word incorrectly.
@@cookingsherry8784It isn't random stranger's on the internet's job to teach children how to speak or spell. What an odd comment.
The wire trash baskets can also be placed in the planting hole to help prevent moles or other underground critters from getting to your plants roots. Roots can still grow through rhe wire mesh.
I used them when i planted American chestnuts and sunflowers.
Great idea ! I have some extra strong metal mesh going to try this too
So… admittedly I am quite new to vegetable gardening, been researching lots of hacks as of late.
Would the basket (buried) work for potatoes? Just pull it up and shake the dirt out… for easy harvesting?
Will this allow bees to pollinate melons, etc?
I was impressed with the dollar tree seeds, they were some of the best plants in my garden. My mother got buckets of tomatoes and peppers from them.
Really? Are they organic seeds?
I'm sure they're not organic, but they're not GMO. @hmartin751
because there GMO.
Same! Many were heirloom, too
I agree the dollar tree seeds are the best always come up every year.
For those of us without drills/tools...You can also use the lids from parmesan and some other spices for shakers they fit a lot of jars, surprisingly!
Great tip!!
Using a pair of pliers, hold a nail toward the flat end. Heat up the sharp end and use it to "punch" holes in plastic.
I just had an idea 💡
you reuse the containers that you get rotisserie chicken in at Costco’s
I do that!
I reuse everything for seed starting. The containers with baby greens are perfect too.
They are good for micro greens too. Walmart stopped using those containers and puts their chickens in bags now. Ugh
Yes i buy anything in clear containers and save them all winter, also for. my mouse traps so i can see with a quick look
Costco going to bags too! 😢
recycle parm cheese containers are great for storing fertilizers and shaking.
Yes!
Or shaking cinnamon sugar for cinnamon rolls😂
DE and Sevin in Large parmesan containers, marked of course for safety. Work fantastic. .
I get shower caps from hotels…my friends who travel know to grab them for me. For plant tags I cut along the length of yogurt and cottage cheese containers and make them into strips. I cut the bottoms of milk jugs or use big clear spinach or lettuce containers for mini greenhouses.
Thanks! I would have never thought of this!
Another thing that works is the big plastic container that those cheese puffballs come in. They're taller than the cloches and have a nice wide opening.
Check out the dollar tree bowl covers in the section with plastic bags and plastic wrap. I believe there’s 17 in a box and the box is mostly purple.
The brand is sure fresh and they are called cover - ups
Good ideas. I used the $$ laundry baskets, which are pretty flimsy for holding actual clothing, over my squash and brassicas. The deer and the rabbits left my plants alone and the neighbours had lots of interesting ideas about what I was doing with laundry baskets all over my front yard. 😂 Loved it!
I use Popsicle sticks for plant labels they are biodegradable and break down over the winter!!
If you're into crawdads, you can make a crayfish trap using two of those wire baskets.
Good ideas. A suggestion on making holes - get a cheap soldering iron to make the holes. Depending on the type of plastic, it can shatter and make not so nice holes. I had that happen to me, so now I use a soldering iron.
Thanks for the tip!
You could also hold a long nail in plyers and heat it with a lighter and make the holes.
Totally right. I got one on Amazon for about 6 bucks and I love it
Just an fyi. Make sure if you do this it's in a well ventilated area. Some plastics like abs give off toxic gas that's harmful to breath.
DeBoz, I was just thinking the same thing. You're right.
I like that they have cloches at DT, but I'm using gallon water jugs for free! Peace and Blessings everyone 🪴😊🌻
That works!
I just discovered the dollar tree clotched this year. They finally are carrying them at my store. But just like you are use water jugs too. It’s nice that we have choices.
I wish our Dollar Tree sold good stuff like that.
Same
Yea it’s hit and miss here too.
Yeah, I've never seen those cloches here.
You can buy them online at DT site
@@TinySpock Yes but buyer beware: You have to buy a certain quantity of some of their items. So, if you only needed one of something, their website may not work out.
The wire basket would be good for sifting small compost piles too.
Great idea!
I have three of those baskets and I never thought to use one for sifting! Great idea.
You gave me a "duh" moment!🤦🏻♀️
I got several of those baskets after seeing them used for plant protection on another channel, and I've also been wanting something to sift some rocky soil .
THANK YOU for saving me the effort and expense of getting a mesh frame to do the job.
It's such an obvious thing, and yet it never entered my brain.😄
I should have read the comments before I left mine, but that's mostly what I use that can for it for. It's amazing for sifting! The mesh slowly begins to rip along the top, but I get a full season use out of it.
Excellent idea.
I’ve added your channel. Ignore the haters, I can understand everything you’ve said. You’re one good looking southern man. 👍🏻
😂 well, thank you.
@deniselachico Heck yes, Denise. Handsome man making mini greenhouses?! Yes please.
Shower caps!! great great idea!!! ❤❤
Dollar Tree also has small black wire pencil holders (in the school supply section) that look exactly like the black wire trash cans. Those are good to put over individual small plants with a couple of garden staples and they will keep squirrels and rabbits off your plants when they are tiny or small.
awww, I thought I figured out the waste basket idea myself! lol
I used the black wire trash cans last summer to beat the rabbits! Works like a charm.
It does work well!
I bet my ground squirrels would just dig under anything. I love them but I hate them too! not looking forward to having even the native plants do well here cuz last year the squirrels and chipmunks ate almost all the sprouts and then it was so dry here. Gardening sucks sometimes when its always fighting someone or the weather. you are very clever!
For the showercap hack I prefer to use a rubberband, which can also be aquired at dollar tree. Then you can remove them more easily and the moisture wont affect the adhesion of the tape.
For the bell cloches, I have used shish kabobs to anchor the jars down. The cloche has pre-drilled holes on the lip. I just push the skewers through those little holes, and the cloche will remain in place even during a windstorm. This has worked fine in my raised beds even during late February, here in Washington state. I should have fresh lettuce and spinach in another few weeks.
Take those wire baskets to drop IN THE GROUND AND PLANT YOUR PLANTS INSIDE. Protects from moles and gophers.
Great tips! I like the cloche and wire basket ideas for protecting seedlings and the shower caps for wintersowing (it's better than using plastic wrap). I'll be visiting my Dollar Tree for these items and check out the seeds too! TFS!
My IPhone updated and I lost following your site. I am delighted to rejoin. I was hit very hard with fungus gnats. I thought I did everything right and my seedlings were wiped out. I felt like a burglar came in my home. My mother was a great gardener she’d cook her soil before planting. She dealt with cutworms. She was dealing with soil planting and more space than my patio garden.
I am starting my patio garden late because I have been I’ll. My MS has been unkind. For me it’s been a blessing. I found your site again. I have rejoined and look forward to what your doing. Thank for your guidance and bless you.
On I am in zone 8 in N.C. We had a lot of rain.
-Athompson
Glad you are back! I’m in NC zone 8 as well.
@@briandaniels4 I am waiting for my order of bags and mosquito bits. The mosquitoes ravaged my seedlings and I noticed the larvae in my bag soil I got.
I tend to use my microscope for testing my soil. The fugus gnat larvae is very aggressive. I have to treat my soil & my seedling soil too. I don’t understand why this is such a soil pandemic these past years.
I would appreciate your take on this situation. I don’t want to kill the good parts of the soil.
Thank you 🙏
I am WAY TOO excited to try the shower caps! 🤭 What a great tip! Thanks. ✨
8 of them in pack too I use them when covering my dough ,can use multiple times more secure then plastic wrap especially for odd size bowls
The wire waste basket also works very well for a compost/dirt sifter. It only lasts about one season for that use, eventually tears along the top, but it's my favorite thing for that purpose.
Love those black baskets. They really work well to protect my tomato seedlings from the myriad of squirrels that dig in my yard. Once the roots are established and the plants grow taller I just take them off and store.
I'm always looking for something to protect my tulip bulbs (in pots) from squirrels. Wire waste baskets will be perfect!
Also, the hot point of a glue gun will melt a hole in plastic.
awesome ideas... thank you
I use the bottle shake method for seeding, & fertilizer. I use empty Parmesan cheese container and or an empty container from large bottle gravy powder. Or spice container. All come with shaker type tops, so do not require burning holes in plastic (yuck) & the cost is nothing from already used/discarded containers. The clothe covers are Awesome‼️. I use the wire baskets over plants, however I’ve cut out the bottom of that wire grid-mesh trash can so plants can grow tall, they remain protected, and unrestricted. Inside the upside down wire waste basket . Keep up the good work. 👍
Oh wow! you just gave me an idea to put my grass seed in the jug and sprinkle out evenly. Thank you
Perfect!
love the shower cap method and it will work well with a clear bag and rubber band
Yes it does!
great gardening tips going to use my shower caps and also purchase a garden cloche to germinate seeds makes a great greenhouse effect!!! I am a senior and i have been gardening since age 20 and still loving it!
Sounds great!
i use a cake cover for more space.
As Brian commented to my milk jug cloche suggestion, that's a wintertime thing! When the weather warmed up, we took them off. We're zone 7b. Actually we had a late hard freeze in March, I had to quickly put them back on for a couple days. You can't leave them on permanently or the plants would get cooked. It's just for freeze protection.
Dollar Tree stores near me don't have these items, their garden items mainly consist of one side of a 4 sided display rack
Dollar Tree online has many items available in smaller quantity minimums.😊
I love love love your suggestions for gardening on the cheap. Thank you! May I help with the first item? It's pronounce like "clothes" but with an "-sh" at the end. You are absolutely correct that french sometimes pronounces an "e" like "-ay" but you will know when it's pronounced that way because there is an accent egout over the "e". It's a small "back slash"- /. Thank you for all your suggestions!
Yes you can! I appreciate that! Correction noted. 😉
Thanks
"Accent aigu," meaning acute. "Égout" is something else.
Thank you! These are such great ideas and the waste basket is much more convenient than chicken wire! I’m definitely making a dollar tree run this weekend!
Glad it was helpful!
Those were such great ideas! Thank you so much, Brian. I will use them because I sure need to save some $$$! God bless.
I haven't seen those bell cloches at any of my Dollar Tree stores but I'll go take a look. Nice hacks!
i use $1 store plastic cake covers
I have been using a stack of the wire baskets of assorted sizes for a few yrs now, so gardening minds think alike! I also picked up the cloches.
Awesome hacks!
Great tips! Thank you. Easy and and not complicated to do.
I love all of your tips!
Thank you! I’m glad my content is helpful to you.
You're like the Minnie Pearl of gardening, never remove the tag! 🙂
Baskets and clochets, great ideas!!
Yeah I really did enjoy this selection this year that they have... They did a few cute videos on starting to see it's with some of my dollar store finds
Great video 😊 thanks for sharing and happy gardening 🌿🌱😊🤗
Thanks for visiting
That’s a good idea about the waste basket! How clever. A couple years ago the deer 🦌 have gotten a hold of my vegetables. This is good for those who live by the woods!
I am so glad I clicked on your video! I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about the squirrels because my backyard is a squirrel Haven, and the wastebasket idea is genius!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for sharing.
Waste basket on a host plant is also a great idea for monarch and swallowtail caterpillars!
Omg the black wire basket is genius!
GREAT tips! Perfect container choice for winter sowing. I’ve tried various types of containers but never thought of doing it this way!
Glad it was helpful!
Love it! Thanks:)
Glad you like it!
I ❤ Dollar Tree. Also loved this video👍Thank you
Thanks for watching!
DT has many great products for gardening, and for improvising gardening hacks.
I usually don''t watch "Best things to buy at..." on you tube, but this one was on gardening and so I took a look. Wow! I had no idea that you could find things that were this nice for the garden at Dollar Tree. Especially liked the little baskets! My chickens and ducks can work a number on new plantings and seeds without protection. Thank you for posting this.
Great ideas. I did purchase the wire baskets. Got them early because they are hard to find in the Spring time.
Yes they are!
The content was indeed helpful. Thanks for the video!
Thanks!
The hack with the wire waste baskets genius ! Thank you for the tips , there all good 😊
You are so welcome!
This was a great post. I will use most of these ideas. On second thought maybe all of the ideas.
So had it was helpful!
Thank you thank you thank you! I was looking for a DT hack on self watering and your first hack gave me exactly what I've been looking for!
Awesome!!
I actually went to Dollar Tree today and stocked up on a lot of the things you recommended! Saved me a ton of money. Instead of a BPA free bottle, I'll use an empty bottle from my recycling! I couldnt find the waste baskets in black but I got them in white! Thanks for this video :)
Thank you 😊 👍👏
No problem 👍
Wow Thank you for sharing these good ideas.
I’m so glad it was helpful to you!
Great hacks! Thanks for sharing and will be ready for more as they are arrive! Blessings
Very interesting ❤
Thank you for all the good information.
You bet!
I’ve been using the wire wastebaskets for several years because I have a heavy presence of rabbits and I hated making and then storing chickenwire cloches. I joke that in spring my yard is a wastebasket farm! Then, I also realized that I could use them to protect the base of young trees from those pesky bunnies. Just cut up one side and take out a large enough circle from the base to accommodate the tree. They don’t even need a closure tie. It has worked for two winters now.
Great ideas
Thank you
Thank you very much for this video!
Absolutely!
Just got some awesome mini cloches that are perfect for my anthurium seedlings and some sweet macrame hangers from the dollar store.
Genius...pure genius!
I like the bell cloche! I haven't seen those here in south Florida so I might have to order it from the site. Great ideas😊
i use $1 store cake toppers.
I love using the shower caps & the cloches for sure from DT! Nice TFS
I use those little caged waste baskets to protect my plants from gophers. For some reason they like my yard more than my neighbors yard, so I dig a hole enough for it to fit in, fill with soil and fertilizer and put my plant in. Last year I wasn't able to plant my garden and at the end of summer when I was able to go out side, a gopher had tunneled up along the side of it, but didn't bite into the wire. I'm sure they could, but for some reason, they didn't. I've already bought some for this year's garden that I can't wait to start. I'm getting some cattle panels delivered this week so I can make some arches. I missed my garden so much.
Praytell who will deliver cattle panels?
@bombshell.13
I would love to know who delivered the cattle panels, as well!
@@seanaames6855Tractor Supply delivered them to me. I signed up for their reward membership in the store, I think it's called Neighbors or something like that. Every three months they send you four vouchers, two are for free delivery and the other two are for free trailer rentals. It's one of the best reward programs I've signed up for and I'm signed up to many in a lot of different stores. I loved having that perk from there because I only have an SUV and I'd never be able to have gotten them. This year I'm setting them up.
@@n0nitwitz reply is below...sorry I missed your question.

Rubber bands would seal that shower cap. Can be removed & reused also.
Great ideas! I like the way you think!!

I use those glass punch bowls that I can find in donation stores, flea markets, etc. They are cheap and work well and I can store and use them again and again.
Thanks for sharing such valuable gardening information.
It's my pleasure
