well, technically neither Geoff nor Layne have arranged for Home Free. Tim asked to use Geoff's arrangement of Elvira, Geoff agreed and then HF rearranged it to suit their needs. HF very graciously gave Geoff full credit for the arrangement 🙂
And Layne was asked by Chris to mash up the Butts remix songs since Layne is so good at remixing and mashing up songs with great transitions, and when Layne gave Chris a great suggestion for mashing the songs up, Chris and Adam did the arranging of the songs with that mash up in mind. So technically they never arranged *for* Home Free, but they were part of the arrangement process 🙂
      and both turned out great!

I always enjoy someone’s first time listening to VoicePlay. They are incredibly talented and entertaining. I hope you’ll go ahead and check out their last two videos released for the Halloween season. By the way they are the undisputed kings of Halloween. They've covered four songs from Nightmare Before Christmas. They do a lot of stuff with costumes and makeup and maybe character voices. They also do a lot of stuff where they just sing straight out.
Since this vid was made, Earl Elkins (high tenor) and JNone (baritone) have left the group in 2020 and 2021 respectively. JNone was replaced by Cesar De La Rosa. Earl's spot is still open, so they've been doing vids with various guest artists (male and female) in that spot.
Geoff Castellucci (bass) also started a solo YT channel, during Covid. You can hear him over there, usually multitracking songs in 4- or 5-part harmony. He hit an E1 in what you just heard, and also hits an E1 in "Blackbird" on his solo channel. Occasionally, he goes as low as a B0. And as you see, he can also go quite high.
The other members are Eli Jacobson (2nd tenor) and Layne Stein (vocal percussion and formerly the baritone).
You want to see what kind of runs the higher voices can do, try Tennessee Whiskey. Just plain sweet singing, maybe try Can't Help Falling In Love. See how high the two tenors and the baritone can go, try Dream On. For more theatrical stuff, and to see female guest artists, try You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch (Adriana Arellano), If I Were a Rich Man/Girl (Ashley Diane), or Little Mermaid Medley (Rachel Potter).
Once they go back to a full touring schedule and have to choose a new permanent 5th member, I'm guessing it will be Omar Cardona. He's guested with them four times: the aforementioned Dream On, Carry On Wayward Son, The Dragonborn Comes [Skyrim], and Superstition. His brother E.J. Cardona guested on Go The Distance and was very good, but he already has a job with Voctave.
    Happy Rabbit Hole. :)

Earl Elkins (bearded tenor) left in 202, J.None(baritone) left and joined the US Navy in 2021. Cesar Del La Rosa(tenor/baritone) has joined since, and they have been using guest singers for the 5th voice. Geoff's wife, Kathy , is the production manager. Ditto to everyone else's comments.. VP are for me the best of the 3. Their dedication, arrangements and talent is phenomenal. They don't always have a "lead" vocalist and generally share the vocals.. And of course because they are doing theatrical voices in this one, you can't tell what their real singing voices are... None of them seem to stay in what is supposed to be their voice capability titles and often jump in and out and confuse new reactors... Ie. In Dream on, the baritone, Cesar, hits the highest note.. Though I think Geoff is practically untouchable with his bass.. My favourites at the moment are hide and seek, ding dong, Hall of the mountain king and friends on the other side.... With Geoff, I'm loving his version of ghost riders in the sky, monster mash and headless horseman... Subscribing in anticipation of more Voiceplay and Geoff.🇬🇧❤️

Yes VP are the theatre kids, they do lots of Disney and videogame songs and lots of medleys, often with very ambitious videos. They don't always focus on bass Geoff, though he usually gets some moments to shine. Some of my faves include We Don't Talk about Bruno, Queen in Five Minutes, Hoist the Colours, The Dragonborn Comes, Moana Medley, and Boy Bands in Five Minutes, but there are loads! Welcome to Voiceplay. They do tend to be more theatrical. The bass, Geoff Castellucci, is more than just a bass; he has a 5 octave range from A0-A5 and can pretty much cover every male voice type, while going higher than most tenors and over an octave lower than most basses.

    • @dmytrotsvyntarnyi799
      @dmytrotsvyntarnyi799 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry, but can't agree with you. It's B0-A5 (the A0 in Warriors is confirmed to be pitch shifted while post-froduction. Legit B0 is in "Halo"). And also, he isn't going "higher then most tenors". He is going "as high as an average baritone", which is still very-very impressive for a bass. Tenors don't only go up to "tenor high C" or the C5. They go up to C5 in CHEST VOICE. Geoff goes up to ~A4 max. in chest voice. Then he has to switch to mixed voice and head voice or falsetto. Only in those registers he is able to get that A5, which is the case for every human. No-one is able to sing an A5 in chest. Not even the highest of sopranos. Maybe there are 1 or 2 sopranos in the world that can go that high, maybe there aren't. But A5 *in falsetto or head voice* is pretty much nothing for a tenor

Most of what Home Free does is arranged

Welcome to the third of the "big three" a cappella groups! With no experience listening to VoicePlay AND no experience with the Nightmare Before Christmas movie, you nailed VoicePlay's general 'theme.' Theatrical. Music Theater. Whimsical. Their arrangements are absolutely amazing (usually by Lane or Geoff). As with Pentatonix and Home Free, this group is versatile, imaginative, and spectacular! There is so much out there, you have a huge "job" in picking what to listen and react to! They do a great job with the Disney medleys. They 'redesign' songs in a "guess what you'll hear NEXT" way that will keep you on your toes! I LOVE their remake of the classic (from Fiddler on the Roof) "If I Were a Rich Man." Their twist??? "If I Were a Rich Man/Girl." If you know the original from the musical, you will really like their version!! I'm subscribing, so I have my EYE on you!! Happy reacting! 😊

They replaced one and now they are a four-man group and they feature a variety of other singers (some of the male, some of them female). You really need to react to their latest, called Hide and Seek (Ding Dong) featuring Lauren Paley. It's definitely a Halloween song and you thought this was theatrical! They have gone all out with their latest--the costumes, the make-up, the background, the special effects. It's superb. You won't be disappointed.

About the "3 Big Names" in the acapella world: Pentatonix, Home Free, Voiceplay. .... Each of them fit the names. Take the name Pentatonix, sounds just like the next best pop-band you would see in the charts... and like you said, they cover a lot of songs in that direction. Then there is Home Free, not exclusively but to a big part more in the country direction. And then there is Voiceplay, The theatre group of the acapella world.
Each of them is distinctive and unique in their own way, but all 3 are doing really good.
Specifically about voiceplay: 3 times a charm, so i gonna suggest 3 of their songs. "Enemy (Feat. Alexa)", "The Little Mermaid Cover" and "Hoist the Colors" .
Voiceplay is my favourite of the acapella world, but that is obviously just a matter of personal taste, like i said, the other two bands are really good, too.

Well, other very good songs, they covered, would be "My Mother told me" (Viking song), "The Dragonborn comes" (from the Fantasy Game Skyrim), "Hoist the Colours" (Pirates of the Caribbean) and "We don't talk about Bruno" (Disney Movie Encanto).

The bass of this group is Geoff Castellucci. He does solo music videos as well. He has a 5 octave range and does all the parts, layering his voice as well as his visuals. He is very impressive and well worth watching! I recommend you start with his cover of the Beatles Blackbird, or Ain't No Sunshine.

In that last section (right after the lopng 'nowhere'), Geoff, the lead singer, went from a B4 all the way down to an E1. That's a frickin' 3½ octaves. Holy moly what a range.
Everyone in VoicePlay is so talented.

BTW: Hear Geoff hit a B0 on their Halo theme cover. Apparently he has a 5 octave range. And I'm willing to believe that. The man is a legend yet such a cool down to earth dude.

The bass is Geoff Castellucci and he does some solo stuff in which he does all the parts himself. His cover of Monster Mash is incredible. My 2nd favorite by Voice Play is The Dragonborn Comes.

and for the bass, Geoff, try “16 tons”, “House of the Rising Sun”, “Big Bad John”, and his recent, “Ghost Riders in the Sky”.

yep, VoicePlay has a very theatrical side to them. they also do more regular music videos just sitting/standing in front of the camera and singing the song, but they often have a varying amount of theatrics in their videos. they all grew up performing in the Orlando theme parks in their early years, so it's part of who they are 🙂
this song doesn't really showcase their true vocal abilities, as it's very character voice heavy. but it's nice to showcase some of Geoff's range and their vocal acting skills 🙂
it's usually quite rare for them to have one person sing lead most of the time, usually they share lead quite evenly.

  • @kylefrandsen2665

Voiceplay definitely has more theater in their videos and they pretty much own Halloween the way other artists do Christmas. They've had a number of member changes over the years. You'll see Geoff (bass), Layne (vocal percussion/effects) and Eli (Rock tenor pronounced "ell-ee") in all of the videos but the other two slots have changed or been filled by guests. Everyone they get as members or guests is just as phenomenally talented so it's hard to pick a favorite.
Voiceplay did a fundraiser song/video "Just Sing" for musicians hit by the COVID situation where a lot of former members, guests and friends contributed. If you turn the captions on, it shows the connection and it's a good intro to the history. Voiceplay also competed with Home Free on season 4 of "The Sing Off" acapella competition and still collaborate. They worked up a song for the competition but never went head-to head so it wasn't on the show, but they had so much fun they did it as a video on their own. Check out "Zombies vs. Hillbillies".

Rosalie, oh wow! You've done it now! The Voiceplay rabbit hole is deep and wide! Everything they do is an absolute smash! And the bass, Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Castellucci (who is a co-founder of the group) has his own personal TH-cam channel as well, in which he has covered an amazing number of classic songs! In his videos, he typically replicates himself into 3, 4, or 5 "Geoff's" and harmonizes with himself throughout whatever performance he's doing. Being Halloween season, you should check out his "Monster Mash" and "Headless Horseman" videos. They are "monstrously" awesome! Also, his latest release (just a couple weeks ago), "Ghost Riders in the Sky," is absolutely amazing!

Though indeed all male Voiceplay often have a featured female singer that works well in a particular song. Oogie boogie is like the one song the bass Geoff is the lead and the rest more like background singers. Non-theatrics and pure live a capella is shown in their so called ACA top 10 medleys and other Christmas songs.

Also, because we're coming in to Halloween, Geoff Castellucci (the bass guy) has 3 specific songs : Headless Horseman, Monster Mash (from last year) and just recently he's posted Ghostriders in the Sky (which has a definite Halloween feel)

Most of the members of VoicePlay have worked at Disney or Universal and as such they know the extra power that comes with the visuals that the theme parks demand. Right now VoicePlay is short one member who got recruited into the US Navy Chorus. He came back on leave and did the lead in Friends on the Other Side. Check that one out please. Before they lost J None to the US Navy, they lost Earl, one of original members from middle and high school days. Powerful tenor displayed in Queen in 5 Minutes. The theme they played with here was a dying man about to cross into the afterlife (Earl had a medical emergency while on tour and did leave the group for personal reasons). Both are good for the Halloween season (as is This is Halloween). Enjoy! If you decide to do some make-up time with VoicePlay, you will have all their fans following you. Also, VoicePlay and Home Free did a video called Zombies vs Hillbillies: Survivor which makes another fun Halloween treat. Geoff our bass has a 5+ octave range (growl at A0 or Ab0, subharmonics at B0, tenor at A5.)

Geoff, Ellie, and Elie are the group's anchors, and they have added Cesar. They now add a guest vocalist for their group songs, male or female, depending on the song. What is fun about Voiceplay is the theatrical elements they add to their performances. You need to prepare for a deep rabbit hole with this group. If you want to hear Geoff's deep range, check out his cover of Sixteen Tons or Ghost Riders in the Sky.

As others have said, this is not their current lineup. They currently have 4 permanent members and rotating guest stars. They also do soulful music. A recent heartfelt warm one is their cover of Bonnie Rait's "I can't make you love me," with guest E.J. Cardona. They've also had several women singers join as a fifth singer, including Rachel Potter and Ashley Dianne. So it's not always an all male group.

Aye, Voiceplay do a lot of theatrical costuming in their songs. Also who the "lead" singer for them is varies depending on the song.
To get an idea of Geoff's voice try checking out his solo song Blackbird or mayhap again his solo song The Headless Horseman.

If you think of the a cappella world as school, Pentatonix is the student council, VoicePlay are the theater geeks, and Home Free is out in the parking lot hosting a tailgate party. Since VP guys are from Orlando and the members have performed at various theme parks over the years, they do a lot of Disney covers, but they're all over the genre map. They can make you laugh (We Don't Talk About Bruno), cry (I Can't Make You Love Me), and make your jaw drop (Hoist the Colors). They love Halloween and released two for the holiday this year, In the Hall of the Mountain King, and Hide and Seek. One of my favorites is Daddy Sang Bass, where their families join them at the end. It's especially poignant if you've watched "Our IVF Journey" on Geoff's solo channel.
Co-founders Layne Stein (beatboxer) and Geoff Castellucci (bass) have been singing together since middle school. They usually take turns doing the arrangements, which also means they take lead on producing the video. If Geoff is in full body makeup (even if no one else is, like in Little Mermaid Medley) it's Layne's arrangement. His arrangement of Oogie Boogie here called for Geoff's entire range at the time, highest to lowest note. Geoff has since trained to go even lower. You can date VP videos by the personnel lineup and length of Geoff's hair.
Like Tim Foust of Home Free, Geoff has a range of about five octaves. Both guys take advantage of that on their respective solo channels to be their own backup singers. Geoff can make you cry (Ain't No Sunshine), laugh (Way Down), drop your jaw (Ghost Riders in the Sky), and every emotion in between. And he does it all on his own -- arranging, performing, costuming, filming, editing -- with help from his wife Kathy, who was a talented singer/performer in her own right until her hearing loss became too significant. My first introduction to Geoff was Monster Mash, and I was a fan within 90 seconds. Kathy has a cameo in it.
Home Free and VP guys are all friends and have collaborated many times, including Zombies vs Hillbillies: Survivor.
For the full VP experience, watch with headphones and captions on (Geoff often puts funny stuff in) and keep watching until the end because there's often an extra bit, usually funny.

Love VoicePlay! Their arrangements are straight fire!! My favs (some anyway) are "Hoist the Colours," "We Don't Talk About Bruno," "Moana medley" and "If I Were a Rich Man/Girl." All their Halloween stuff is spooktacular though, lol. It's hard to go wrong with VoicePlay! "Hoist the Colours" isn't Halloween, but it's creepy and cool and close enough, lmao, so I'd recommend it next.
