    I want hipster scarf-wearing George to show up in future episodes, and every time he does he's wearing one more scarf. Eventually his head will just be a big ball of scarves.

    I recently got PSVR and it has been eyeopening. I have loved it so far and it was my first time experiencing VR. Hopefully the PS5 will be designed on improving the potential room-scale and lack of ports. (Though I recommend charging docks for controllers, its yet another expense but if it plugs directly into the wall, it solves the lack of port problem and keeps everything charged even while the console is off)

    I'm so happy to see a major person in video games speak optimistically regarding VR. All I ever read about it is that it's a gimmick, it has novelty. But I've been doing VR stuff for close to 3 years now and love every minute of it. I seriously can't get enough. And I'm using cobbled together phone VR and software to play PC games (used to be Cardboard + Trinus, now I use GearVR + Riftcat). I can't wait to actually get a Vive.

    There will always be a sub-sect of people who this technology can never work with. People with eye problems, neck/leg/back problems. Things that simply sitting on a couch with a controller, far from the screen can work for them, whereas moving the body around and having the screen so close to their eyes can't.
    Being a person who has mild eye strain, I can't really watch 3d movies because it begins to physically hurt me after a while.
    While there are things VR can do, there will always be a limiting factor in the playerbase for these and probably other reasons.

    • @georgeandrews1394
      @georgeandrews1394 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Of course, but the deaf can't listen to radio shows or podcasts, and the blind couldn't enjoy pre-sound films (and even now, they still only have access to part of the experience). My brother gets a headache after watching 3D films, too, and I myself might not be able to use VR because of my own eye problems.
      It does suck, but with every new piece of technology, some group gets left out. However, at least in some cases, we can try to find workarounds.

    This is the PSVR video review I've been waiting for.
    I recently had the opportunity to play with a Vive at roomscale for 2h straight, and I was blown away by the experience. It was my first actual VR experience outside of my crappy Gear VR headset. I enjoyed it so much that I began researching the cost associated with a Vive, and contemplated buying a computer and the headset and the whole damn kit before realizing it would come up to like $2k CND.
    Next best option was the PSVR, but I had my doubts. I now know for a fact that I'm better off waiting for the next iteration of PS VR software. While the PSVR is very impressive, it's just not quite there yet in terms of the technology (and the price is still too high in Canada I think). Your video just helped quantify what I had already begun to suspect... that VR is awesome and it IS worth it, but there are limitations, and if you're ready to look past those limitations then go for it, and if not, maybe wait and see what the next iteration will bring.

    That bit at the end about VR video got me really interested. Your joy and excitement about these games and this tech was infectious. I think I get where you're coming from with the nostalgia angle. I haven't felt that jump in gaming like I did during other generations. Seeing the video for Rogue Squadron on the Gamecube, seeing Gears of War on an HDTV or playing Wii Sports Tennis. It sounds like VR has done that for you. I'll have to give it a try. Great video :D

    I don't think people realize how revolutioanry this is going to be. Just imagine how this will change everything, art galleries, theatre, concerts, cinema, watching movies with friends.

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Art galleries -> Except people go to art galleries to actually see the art. You can already see digital representations of most art galleries but people still prefer to see the real thing. So VR will help basically nobody.
      Theatre -> The streaming costs would be astronomical and if you're doing a home experience you might as well just pop in the DVD or use your smart TV to play it in your living room. Cinemas would be unwilling to use a large quantity of VR headsets because of the expense and the fact that they *will* be lost, damaged, or stolen regularly, and directors and filmmakers would generally be unwilling to use it because you cannot make a good cinematic experience without cinematography, which is something you lose if you try making VR films.
      And if you mean stage-play theatres, then we jump into another realm of problems where you'd actively damage the business of theatres. Same with concerts.
      I rather think you are *severely* overestimating the capabilities, much less usefulness or practicality, of VR, my friend.

    • @juanmanuelbarbier8639
      @juanmanuelbarbier8639 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An art gallery isn't just a bunch of frames hanging on walls, space takes a huge part of what makes an art gallery interesting. Besides, people can't just go to all art galleries in the world because they don't have the money or the time to do it.
      I don't know if streaming a play would be very expensive. Just imagine the actors and actresses acting via VR in front of a group of spectators. There a few games that do this sort of thing, like VR chat or Comedy Night.
      Anyway, that's not actually my point. What I am trying to say is that this gives accessibility to experiences that we could not do otherwise

    I am opening a VR Arcade in TN, I wish you could just come check out our stations. If you're loving the PSVR that much, it would be great to see how much you like having a 20ft x 20ft space using an HTC Vive Pro that has the wireless kit. Room-scale VR is so much fun and it's a bummer that the PSVR has such a limited FoV.

      If you have a decent computer (IE haswell cpu, GTX 1050 TI and up) you might want to check out Windows Mixed Reality. You can get a Dell Visor with the controllers for ~$270 and especially in major titles like superhot vr and job simulator it'll track nearly as well as the vive and leagues better than PSVR.

    I've been a VR skeptic since the very beginning, but I must say that your enthusiasm is quite infectious. I had my first experience with VR last June: I was working at a local convention and I had to take care of a booth where we made people try out the HTC Vive. During those three days I played a little bit of Arizona Sunshine and the Archery minigame from The Lab. I thought that they were cool, but I didn't find them that impressive, to be honest.
    It might have been because there were a lot of technical problems with the HTC Vive, or the fact that while playing I would always get entangled in the wires, or the fact that the visor wasn't confortable to wear at all, or even the fact that those two games weren't that good (I mean, the archery minigame was actually really well made, but it wasn't as immersive as Arizona Sunshine, so it wasn't as good of a showcase for the technology).
    Maybe (most likely, actually) the problem is that the technology is still really rough and expensive, while the software is still very rudimental. But I didn't think of this situation as you did, as a new beginning for the gaming landscape. Thinking of VR like this is actually really intriguing. It's like we are now in an Atari 2600-like era, thinking of how things will mature and get better is pretty exciting. Especially because, as you said in the video, being excited with new hardware and innovations with traditional videogames is becoming more and more difficult as time goes on. This is refreshing.

    George, if you're concerned about being too sedentary while gaming you might want to consider a treadmill or recumbent bike setup. I shifted to a standing desk and treadmill setup about a year and a half ago and it's worked brilliantly. Since then I've done hundreds of hours of fast paced walking while gaming and it's been really enjoyable. I also run, but not usually while playing, though it's definitely possible and I'd like to try to do it more. There's definitely an adjustment period with treadmill gaming and you'll want to start with slow speeds to be safe - you'll probably find yourself unconsciously turning your body with your in-game character's movements sometimes - but it doesn't take very long to get used to. Heck, these days fancy fully motorized sitting/standing desks can be bought for reasonable prices (I got mine for $300 from Autonomous, where similar models can go for upwards of $1000)! I know this kind of setup definitely won't work for everyone, but if you love games and/or do highly sedentary work it can be a real quality of life boon.
    Also it's great to see a video with genuine excitement! Big fan of yours. All the best.

      Thumper in VR is quite a rush. It's not a total transformation, but given that regular Thumper is already pretty cool, that's not a bad thing. The psychodelic nature of sound and visuals are a good match for VR.

      Definitive Dubs What might blow your mind even more is that we're starting to see videos that you can actually walk inside and see from any angle. You can also do the same thing for light-field captures. Check out Welcome to Lightfields by Google; it allows you to move around a little bit inside real world locations that do indeed look 100% real.
      Eventually, it will get to the point where you could teleport to a real world concert that is happening live that feels 100% real and sounds 100% real with lifelike audio replicated with personal HRTFs, and you would be able to move about in it and see other people who have "teleported" there as well, and finally you would be able to feel and touch what you see with haptic gloves. Oh and it would also be possible for people who are visiting the concert in real life to see you through AR glasses.

    The crazy thing is, it's now PC with the more budget friendly, easy to set up VR because of ...Microsoft somehow made a headset that you can slap on fairly easily and only requires 2 cables to plug in.
    Their "Windows Mixed Reality" headsets are just dumbly named VR headsets. There's no cameras or lamps/sensors to plug in. It's all tracked by the headset. I spent $250+16 for extension cables and expected a janky experience but it ...works surprisingly very well. It's higher res than the current big names like the Vive and the Rift by a decent amount with a 1440p set of screens.
    Instead of the sensors or cameras it has all the tech built into the headset, which tracks the room and the controllers. Despite not being able to fully track behind you, the controllers still somehow manage to work with even archery games or when you throw something.
    Room scale VR for under $300, that's super easy to set up and to top it off will even do the whole social screen so friends can watch and these headsets are similarly based on the PSVR headset so they're easy to take off and hand off.
    I didn't think I'd be getting VR for years since the price of the bloody VIve and Rift are well over $400 (rift needs an extra sensor for room scale stuff...so another $60 for a sensor!?). So I'm hyped, and hyped to see things getting good on the console side of things. Though that box hanging from George's head ...that looks annoying.

    I know I have mentioned most of what I have to say here in emails to the podcast, but here goes.
    It feels great to see you finally getting the VR bug, for me that happened... FIVE YEARS AGO, with the Oculus DK1. It's amazing what kind of stuff we have now, both software and hardware.
    I have the Rift and Vive, and the Vive is contrary to what many think perfectly valid for tiny rooms. The wide coverage of the Lighthouse tracking made it easy for me to play VR games in a tiny bedroom when I was between apartments. I mostly played just standing, but with the ability to crouch all the way down and turn 360. Being limited by the field of view of a camera feels so 2014 (DK2).
    Coincidentally, I watched this in my Daydream View, in bed, it's great for video when I should be asleep. And I get a huge screen and with a Pixel XL it looks very good too. This is what Oculus Go will be, your pocket cinema machine. I digress.
    Software, we have a crapload of it now, more than I can even consume even if I just try things once. Compared to the early devkit days, it's amazing, it is a bit sad to see large studios fumble with their releases though. Like Doom VFR on PC, it launched with _zero_ controller options. Even now when we have a few very essential option, the way they bound it makes me not enjoy the game. It's like they think VR would be needing even less personification than pancake gaming, while the reverse is probably true due to the whole locomotion thing.
    On the topic of pancakes, having played VR for half a decade it has been years since I found first person games, or any camera control game really, compelling. They feel like flat, like I remote control something, with abstracted controls. It's just... not the way I play anymore.
    Anyway, again, good to see you are enjoying ourself. VR has become a polarizing thing in the gaming world, somehow, there are vocal haters that probably have never tried it that dismisses it completely. Like saying color TV is a fad... or something.
    Anyhow, good night :)

    Still skeptical given that George's own VR video showed he is one of those unusually good with getting around nausea, and speaking as someone who's experienced VR sickness in a variety of games, there is no way I'm dropping over $300 on something that has even a 50% chance of making me madly sick in any given game *shrug

    Great video. I've dabbled in PSVR and the Rift thanks to friends. Not all of it has impressed me, due to the "screen-door" effect, but there were some mind-blowing ones.
    Superhot VR is FANTASTIC, and is probably the perfect "hey try this out" game for VR to show people.
    Elite: Dangerous is one of my most-played games and is something I have wanted to try in VR so badly, but have only had a brief little test. I feel a game like Elite is perfect for VR at the moment, since it's played entirely through sitting down in a spaceship, where the VR simply enhances your perspective and immersion. The full-body movement stuff might be better suited for a few years down the line when the tech is better.
    I definitely agree that VR is going somewhere. It needs work, it needs time, but one day I will be able to ride a 360 video of Jurassic Park: The Ride without it looking super blurry, I tell ya. Living in Australia forces me to think like that.

    Everyone I've seen gushing over VR are the people that can handle the motion sickness and nausea really well. I tried it twice and it was basically unplayable for me. I highly doubt it will ever become mainstream because of all the barriers.

    • @blueberrybandit2388
      @blueberrybandit2388 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Almost all the barriers can be fixed pretty fast with one or two new generations of tech. Some games won't give you motion sickness, like those that use room-scale or teleportation, and there are comfort options for a lot of games as well, and you can likely get past motion sickness issues by playing in short bursts.

    • @huwguyver4208

      I never had an issue with motion sickness, but people who have tell me that it is something that you adjust to. There is a term for it- "getting your VR legs". And all the games have a ton of comfort settings to help you through.

      I've tried both still standing and movement stuff. Both make me sick so it's not a matter of the type of game. And even if I could train myself, being told that you need to go through literal painful sessions in order to get "used to it" isn't very appealing.

    Absolutely love my psvr. So so impressive. It was inevitable that most the games would be from indie devs, with the smaller user install base big studios don't wanna invest millions in a triple a title that's built for VR.. But it has been shown to be pretty easy to put VR modes in existing games with resi 7 and wipeout so hopefully that'll happen some more in future.
    Yea it will be nice to have improved moves (and tracking) if theres a psvr 2 but the current tech works damn well considering its old.

      Yeah, I think the George is missing two major points (maybe on purpose).
      The Rift have been officially out for 2 years, and have been "widespread" way before that, and this new wave of VR was supposed to be the real one.
      But we're still in this demo age, with "games" where you are done in less than 10 hours.
      He struggles to give more than 3 "killer app", and these games looks like some Unity amateur prototype, no big fleshed out games.
      Where are the R6 Siege or Zelda of VR ? I mean a game you will keep playing for more than a month ?
      Because that's the other point, he said he got it for a month like it was a long period.
      One month is nothing, I want to know where his VR headset will be in 6 months, in a year, in 2 years...
      Will he still bother plugin all these things to play RE7, while he can play basically the same by just picking up the controler and sitting on the couch ?

    • @Nabekukka
      @Nabekukka 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There are some "real" games where the VR shines, like Elite: Dangerous. Some older games have been getting VR mods. But unfortunately most of the meat is in games that don't even have a native VR support, this is where Trinus comes into play.

  • @AdeptusForge
    @AdeptusForge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I'm gonna whole-sale disagree with ya here George. As a designer, VR doesn't really change how games are made from the ground up so much as it slightly changes how we design a small subsection of games, namely FPS games. Every other type of game is completely unaffected by the introduction of VR, and even the changes made to FPS games are minor at best.
    For the most part, the only aspects that really change are that now people can exploit things that didn't exist in other games such as leaning, an unlocked view tilt, and a non-quantized view height(by non-quantized I mean where you can only be in a certain number of states at once instead of being allowed to be at any height, like in VR).
    I still think that VR is just a really giant and expensive pair of 3D glasses at a movie theatre. VR attempts to makes games more immersive by tying your movements to the game itself, but loses a lot of games' ability to be abstract in both input and action.
    As with games, movies and videos have arguably a LARGER impetus on the designed perspective than games do. VR let's you be there in person, but it is no more or less immersive than any go-pro style video. I'll paraphrase one of my favorite lines here: A art piece's quality is not reliant on nor inherent in its medium.

    • @Llamadeus
      @Llamadeus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I can tell from your comment you've not tried it. It is in no way similar to 3D glasses or a go pro video. Those are horrifically inaccurate comparisons.

    • @AdeptusForge
      @AdeptusForge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can tell from your comment that you don't realize that others can have other opinions than you. Not only that, you can't tell that one of those "comparisons" was a metaphor for movie-theatre 3D glasses: An overly expensive gimmick that adds little to nothing to the quality of the overall work, and serves more to empty wallets rather than improve the overall experience.
      I have tried PS4 VR and the Vive, and while I am relatively thankful that I do not have the same motion sickness that most others do, I found about as much enjoyment and immersion in both as I would playing any other game but with the screen strapped to my face with duct tape. Might be my own inherent bias, but I simply cannot and do not enjoy VR.
      I was as hyped for VR as anyone else when they first were announced, but after constantly being disappointed both as a player and a designer, I see very little value in them on the whole. For you to sit there and say "I can tell from your comment you've never tried it", makes me spontaneously generate a massive middle finger for you. Come back to me when you get suckered into something for more than 900$ and then find out you wasted your money on nothing but a couple of overpriced Beach Head 2002 headsets and a pile of janky peripherals.

    • @Llamadeus
      @Llamadeus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Adeptus Forge your description of what the VR experience is like is extremely inaccurate though. When attempting to explain the VR experience to people who have never tried it I explicitly inform them "it's nothing like having a screen really close to your face". The difference is FOV, depth of field, and perspective. Seeing things in VR is exactly like seeing things in real life which is why people now describe non VR games as "2D games" or "flat".
      To claim that VR doesn't offer a entirely unique experience is to be objectively incorrect. Of course I'm being a little hyperbolic, subjective opinion still applies, but there is a strong objective factor as well that you seem to be entirely ignoring.
      Describing VR objectively incorrectly (just like a screen taped to your face) is either a result of ignorance to what it's actually like; per my original argument, or willful misinformation.

    • @AdeptusForge
      @AdeptusForge 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're saying that my description of VR is extremely inaccurate simply because it is different than yours. Wonderful. How I experience VR games feels very much like taping a screen to my face. To say I'm "objectively wrong" and "willfully misinforming" people is my attempt at describing my experiences with the system setup is objectively wrong in itself. I can't describe it how *you* experience it, only how I do. Again it seems you can't seem to grasp that people can have different opinions than you.
      I could have said that playing VR is like eating pizza through a straw, and you couldn't have called me out in that respect either since it is(let's say it together) an opinion! If I had said that playing VR involves impaling rusty nails into a persons face for hours on end with a hammer, THEN you could have called me out on it, since that was factually inaccurate. Unfortunately for your argument, everything I stated in my original post was either a straight up fact that is easily verifiable(such as the design aspects), or were (let's say it again) my opinions!
      For instance, with current generation VR, you are LITERALLY strapping a screen onto your face and using that to see with into the game space. To say that's "objectively incorrect" is to be flatly incorrect yourself, as it is the way VR currently works to begin with. If you think I'm wrong here, try playing with whatever VR system you use without putting on the headset. Go ahead, I'll wait.
      As a side note, FOV, depth of field, and perspective are all things that exist in every visual art form. VR isn't some special kid that gets to have all these things that the other media kids don't get. Everything from sculptures to movies to paintings to video games use or don't use depth of field and perspective in their own ways.

    • @RainSoxx
      @RainSoxx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Adeptus Forge the fact you can't get over that VR is just 'taping a screen to your face' is causing you to miss all the beauty of VR. Can't see the woods for the trees. If you refuse to see that VR is LITERALLY and OBJECTIVELY more immersive than traditional gaming, then you're either blind in one eye or ignorant.
      Also, of course current gen VR is strapping a screen to your face, and it will be for a very long time. We're nowhere near any holodeck technology yet.
      There's always naysayers when it comes to new tech, like with mobile phones that would 'fry your brain' or the personal computer that would 'never catch on'. So you're free to state your opinion, no matter how wrong you are.

    I've played PSVR twice, probably for a total of 3 hours... and I'm not seeing the hype, nor do I have any desire to play it again. I also played some VR in the early 90s and it was basically the same thing (except for form factor, they definitely do that better now). VR was shit back then, and that hasn't changed.
    VR is an extremely limiting concept as far as game design goes. Limited movement, limited enemy and level design, limited visuals, limited genres (since you're stuck in first-person, and third-person gameplay, even if possible, sucks balls in VR)... And it's not fun. There doesn't exist a truly must-play VR game. I did play Superhot VR, and it is fun, but the normal Superhot is just plain better from a design standpoint.
    Maybe in 50 years VR won't be shit. But with current tech VR is not worth even a second of my time. How long until NerveGear?

    • @blueberrybandit2388
      @blueberrybandit2388 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      MrJobocan VR in the 90s and now are very different. They can't be compared.
      Game design wise, VR does not necessarily mean limited enemy or level designed or genres. Visuals will actually surpass non-VR as time goes on because rendering a VR game will get easier than rendering non-VR.
      Also 3rd person gameplay has proven to work amazingly in VR with games like Moss. You haven't played it, but you said it sucks which is pretty unfair.
      You didn't spend nearly enough time with PSVR to see even 1% of the potential of current VR.

    What a lot of people don't realise is that many of the benefits of VR aren't able to be experienced unless you're actually wearing a VR headset. The feeling of depth and scale and presence don't translate to 2D video. I found when I was playing Valve's Lab demo that I was having a shitload of fun just picking things up and throwing them around. Standing in the same room as GLaDOS was awe inspiring because you actually get a feel for how massive she actually is, something you could never truly understand from the 2D games. If your only experience of VR is in written articles or 2D images or video, it's unlikely you'll truly understand these things. That's where a lot of skepticism for the medium comes from. If you haven't ever put a VR headset on and don't see why people are raving about it, that's probably a big reason why.

      As someone who personally only has Google Cardboard, 40 is the absolute limit before your brain just can't take it. It's not just an issue of responsiveness, it is physically painful. When I had really bad FPS drops below 40 when playing Half-Life 1 mods in VR, it honestly felt like a fever dream. Like the physical feeling of hallucinating with a bad fever. It was the first time I felt motion sickness in VR.
      And this is just with Google Cardboard, where I'm pretty much locked to a head rotation and gamepad, I imagine tolerance levels are lower when the controls are much closer to real movement.

    VR tech is like the first video games consoles when they were created and sold to the public: "this is too expensive and there isn't much to do".
    People are complaining that it isn't great at start, when they only got good consoles and video games now because before people supported it at the start for the possibilities it can go with time and money.
    Yeah its not for most to buy this now (like how TV and the first game consoles were for rich families), but if you are patient and show positive interest then VR can get more investors and keep getting better and affordable (like TV and Video games got).
