£171000 for a Mercedes SL??? I don’t care how good it looks, at that price I’m looking at a 911 for sure. Also, somehow modern Mercedes seem to be going up in price (and admittedly in design) but really falling behind in quality, particularly build quality. They seem to use cheaper plasticky materials nowadays, which is a shame considering that Mercedes used to be built their like tanks in 80s and 90s
I don’t know if I really like the display screen. Personally, I would probably find it to be very annoying. Driving a car such as this, I would hope to be able to get away from anything that could keep an electronic leash on me. Other than that the car looks amazing. About seven years ago I had an opportunity to test drive the SL 65 AMG version. It was pretty crazy. We’re going in the second gear. There was so much torque to the rear wheels did actually chirped the tires.
I tested both 911Gts and sl63, i bought the SL, cars are personal , there is no right or wrong , nothing is perfect. I am just use to Mercedes and my wife too.

I absolutely hate these types of touch displays. It looks like the car manufacturers wanted to escape actual quality contoured design, and said "Let's just stick an iPad in the middle!" 🤨
You'll need a track for the 911 turbo to outshine this car. And even then it won't outshine it by much. But what this car does better than porsche it does by a mile.
Cabriolets are simply NOT about sharp handling, they’re about effortless power, looking good and showing off your chiselled features. This is hands down better at that. I love the 911… as a track car… but not the cabriolet, which looks lumpen and ungainly.
What I really don’t get with these cars and the 911 is the decision to put seats on the back. It seems such a waste of useful space. I owned a 911 and known lots of people who has or had it. No one, I mean, no one EVER used the back seats other than storage. So why not make it a two seater with either more boot space (on the merc) or even convert those useless back seats to some cool internal storage on the 911. Anyways, I think the GT is still my preference but nice looking car nonetheless.
So the infotainment system has the latest MBUX system (which is probably the best in the business for the last three years), which is easy to use and packed with all the features you'd expect, Android auto, Apple CarPlay, and has a practical feature of being able to minimize glare and this all equals "gimmicky". Interesting take.
Lovely car Beautifully built and engineered But…the twin turbo V8 sounds a bit naff on full send. It actually sounds great when cruising on modest throttle openings, above 5k it really falls apart and has a synthetic sound. Each to their own I guess
But this has actually came in mind but it's funny how nobody talks about the 911 Turbo because I think that the SL 63 would actually compete proper with the 911 Turbo because well we all know the Turbo S is monstrosity without a doubt.
The more politicians fit into fits car, which is not really a 5000 truck and truck drivers who do know local vacation law, the more you get what you want. Trunk is what they meant - it has spoilers, so strong lifters and good race track cornering. Easy to get one if your work place is close to used cars market, but you aren't driving it in winter.
front looks really good but I never liked the rear design of modern mercedes cars. I would still get the 911 over this but not in turbo trim. GT3 Touring for the win.
When a manufacturer test 0-60, they run it one direction, and then run again in the opposite direction and take the average of the two. This rules out wind and terrain. They don't just run it downhill 1 time like you did.
Mercedes 100% of the time understates 0-60 times. If they say 4.5, it's usually 4.0 or 3.9. So for mercedes to claim a 0-60 time of 3.6 while car and driver got it to 60 in 3 flat, doesn't surprise me at all.
If I had to pick one, I'd get this over a 911. Great sound, looks, and performance. The best option would be to have this AND a Turbo S, but I can afford neither so here we are lol
How can anyone be happy with a 4.0 L v8 when AMG was prime with it’s 6.2L. And to some extent, the 5.5L BiTurbo. It’s not like they need to go to the 4.0 L…they could’ve just reworked the 6.2 and 5.5.
This engine is much better than both the 6.2 and the 5.5 in all aspects. The turbo lag is much less in this engine than it is in the M157 and the tuning capacity is much superior as well. These engines can push more than a 1000 hp without even touching the engine internals. The M157 can't even do 900 hp without you having to change the Connecting rods.
Nice looking car, and appears to be fun to drive. As for the 911, I couldn't care less if it was the greatest car on earth 10 times over. As long as it continues to look like a hopped-up, squished Beetle, I'm not interested.
Just looking at the engine and therefore weight distribution between the SL and a 911, also the overall weight , the difference is such that I don't there's a buyer especially at this price level who would be one or the other between the two. I don't really see them competing except for someone who just has a lot of money but not driving needs.
MB will NEVER have the cachet of a 911 for sports cars, it's really that simple. Don't get me wrong, MB are great but their cachet is more in the luxury cruiser area. Give me an s class for road trips and a 911 for tearing up the road.

Mercedes can make a "spider" version of this fabulous roadster. In spite of losing two seats...
Nice review, just to get in to the Category of the 911 turbo is special enough.
How do you get it
But this has actually came in mind but it's funny how nobody talks about the 911 Turbo because I think that the SL 63 would actually compete proper with the 911 Turbo because well we all know the Turbo S is monstrosity without a doubt.
yeap, still not convinced that this is better than the 911.
Mercedes is on another level! What an amazing car! ❤
I like the look of the car but that big display screen is way too distracting!
If I had to pick one, I'd get this over a 911. Great sound, looks, and performance. The best option would be to have this AND a Turbo S, but I can afford neither so here we are lol
Well I would get a 911 GTS over that
You can get a GT3 for the price of that car. It's ridiculously overpriced.
@@MuppetsSh0w no doubt about that mate
@@wethumasilela1331ok well you'll need a track to do anything that car can't in the over glorified VW. 😂
My Real Love of all Time
Waiting for the SL73e 😎
I only wish this SL models came with 2-seater instead of 2+2...
4:56 Stuffing the pockets don't stop it from being Flat :)
Listen to these revs…
Well sounds more like a rev limiter 😅😅
4matic is nice and all, but i long for the days when they make cars with nickname like "Widowmaker"
Saw a white one in person and had an amazing road presence. Still, I would get a 911 for quality and reliability.
Ummm....you may wanna reconsider the quality and reliability part😂. You want that don't go for the porsche aka VW.
Just looking at the engine and therefore weight distribution between the SL and a 911, also the overall weight , the difference is such that I don't there's a buyer especially at this price level who would be one or the other between the two. I don't really see them competing except for someone who just has a lot of money but not driving needs.
The tacked-on iPad in the middle is annoying. These things need to be integrated far better.
Price is absolutely ridiculous...
This is SUPERB 👌🏾
Would’ve been even better with a slightly longer base and a hardtop option.
Still prefer the 2016-2018 Mercedes AMG GT R
ok, porsche it is then...
by the way, no wind deflector??
MB will NEVER have the cachet of a 911 for sports cars, it's really that simple. Don't get me wrong, MB are great but their cachet is more in the luxury cruiser area. Give me an s class for road trips and a 911 for tearing up the road.
