    "Just remember, Spongebob, I'll always be with you right here"
    "In my heart?"
    "Actually, in your arteries"
    I don't know why, but that quote seems to get me every time.

    I think the reason this episode looks so different is because CH Greenblat (creator of Chowder and Harvey Beaks) had a lot to do with it ( I think he story boarded it). His style of drawing SpongeBob is very unique and if you look at some of the comics he did for the series, you can see the same character oddities you noted in this episode.

    • @Hondo20132

      Greenblatt was the storyboard director and co-wrote the episode with Paul Tibbitt.

      I agree. They also look like their models from the movie to me as in them being more "cartoony". I've noticed them starting to look like that on the newer episodes. (2016 season 9)

    • @SuperGamer61499
      @SuperGamer61499 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      That makes sense actually. As somebody who has watched Chowder he has a very unique style to his works. And watching Fear Of A Krabby Patty even watching it as kid I felt like something was off about the said style. And thinking about it it makes sense that it would be CH's work that gave me that impression.

      He also did Dying for Pie, which is another episode where SpongeBob looks kinda different, at least to me.

    My favorite part has to be, without a doubt, when Spongebob points and screams at a customer, hallucinating that he's a Krabby Patty, and the guy's wife says "I told you that shirt was hideous."

    It's unique how the two episodes which involve Spongebob's emotions with Krabby Patties are polar opposites in the quality department. This one has an interesting, well paced story with excellent humor, and To Love a Patty is a cringefest with few funny moments and a slow, poorly thought out plot. Also, I really wish we saw more Plankton schemes of this caliber. He thought this through 100%, instead of just leaving it half baked and that's really great to see. :) Great review btw, and this is definitely one of my top 10 Season 4 favs. ^w^

    The differences in the episode's animation can be attributed to the storyboard director, C.H. Greenblatt (who also worked on a lot of episodes in seasons 2 and 3), and this was actually his last episode on the show too.

  • @mcamman6193
    @mcamman6193 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Nice review man. Overall, this is actually my 6th favorite episode of Season 4. It takes a really unique setup and for the pilot of Season 4, they manage it quite well. This comes pretty close to Shell of a Man. Thanks Pieguy. This is why you're my favorite youtuber.

      Paradox Box
      Why because it created some of the tropes like Spongebob's voice being high pitched or the over the top facial expressions and animation?

  • @JoePCool14
    @JoePCool14 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I always liked this episode too. I thought the who concept was just crazy but it worked so well. Although I didn't notice that this really is one of the very few times Plankton actually gets further with his plans. Maybe Plankton's Army would be another example of this pre-movie. The animation in this episode looked off to me too, even as a kid. It actually kinda bugged me and it kinda still does. But it's not enough to ruin the experience.

    Definitely agree about omitting the "3 min later" time card. I like it but because the show went on for a long time, it ended up being overused...plus like you said, it's rare when we get to see the PROCESS. I'll say time cards are justified if writers plan to add many other things to an episode because you only have 11 minutes. But I think this episode was well balanced.

    This episode seems to have different character models because it DOES have different character models, as it had a different lead animator, C.H. Greenblatt. Greenblatt may be familiar from his other work on various cartoons including:
    Free for All
    An adult oriented cartoon first aired on Showtime in 2003, lasted for one 7 episode season
    Grim & Evil
    First aired on Cartoon Network in 2001, this "Cartoon Cartoon" produced two spin-offs: "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" and "Evil Con Carne"
    Evil Con Carne
    First aired on Cartoon Network in 2001, this short-lived spin-off of the previously mentioned "Grim & Evil" lasted for one 14 episode season.
    The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy,
    First aired on Cartoon Network in 2004, lasted for 6 seasons
    The X's
    First aired on Nickelodeon in 2005, lasted for one 40 episode season (technically the show ran for 20 episodes, but each episode has two segments)
    Chowder
    First aired on Cartoon Network in 2007, lasted for 3 seasons
    Fish Hooks
    First aired on Disney Channel in 2010, lasted for 3 seasons
    Harvey Beaks
    First aired on Nickelodeon in 2015, currently in its second season
    (Greenblatt's tumblr blog: chgreenblatt.tumblr.com/ )

    • @nascarfanatic2425
      @nascarfanatic2425 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Season 6-- in my opinion-- was the worst season of SpongeBob. More Squidward Torture Porns aired that season than any other season of SpongeBob. Season 4 had 4, I think. (Good Neighbors, The Thing, Squid Wood, and Squidtastic Voyage) Season 5 had 3, I think. (Boat Smarts, Breath of Fresh Squidward, and Good Ol' Whatshisname) Season 6, though, had Boating Buddies, Choir Boys, Slide Whistle Stooges, Cephalopod Lodge, House Fancy, Pineapple Fever, Giant Squidward, Professor Squidward, and Squid's Visit. 47 episodes that season, and almost a fifth of the season-- almost half of the bad episodes-- were Squidward Torture Porns. And there were others that had Squidward Torture shoehorned in. The Splinter and Truth or Square to name a couple.

    • @nascarfanatic2425
      @nascarfanatic2425 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Well, that's okay if you do like those seasons. I will give credit that they weren't completely bad, I mean, season 6 had gems like Sand Castles in the Sand and Not Normal, Season 7 had ones like Earworm and Perfect Chemistry, and Season 8 had good episodes like Mooncation, (the best episode of the vacation ratings trap, IMO, and probably the best of the whole season) Planet of the Jellyfish, and the season finale: Hello Bikini Bottom.
      None the less, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I really do think SpongeBob's getting back on the right track, though. Just watched it's 2 newest episodes, Sold! and Lame and Fortune.

      ***** I didn't mean that those were the only good episodes during that time. I will also give you credit: I enjoyed SpongeBob vs. The Big One. I think that episode was probably SpongeBob's best way of making an episode w/ 3 different subplots.
      Pineapple Fever, however, I'm afraid I disagree on. Here's why:
      - The biggest issue this episode has is that it brings Squidward into the plot specifically to torture him-- torture he didn't deserve, may I add. One of the examples was at the very beginning when Squidward literally tore his eyebrow off. (That's another thing I disliked about the episode: that part made me cringe and get grossed out.)
      - Another issue that the episode has is that for the majority of the plot, nothing really happens.
      - I don't mind stupidity being portrayed; especially in SpongeBob, but I do have my limits on what I can tolerate, and I think those limits got put to the test w/ SpongeBob and Patrick's games w/ Squidward. The puzzle gag wasn't funny, IMO, and it was a little frustrating to watch Squidward have to explain to SpongeBob and Patrick how he won the Tic-Tac-Toe game. I can understand Patrick not getting it, but SpongeBob should at least be smart enough to know how to play tic-tac-toe. Granted, the writers make SpongeBob however smart/stupid they want to if the plot demands it. I just prefer some consistency.
      - This episode rips off two episodes from the first 3 season that I do like: The Camping Episode, and Club SpongeBob. There's also references to an episode I don't like: House Fancy.
      Squid Defense, as far as episodes I consider bad, is definitely on the milder side, but I still dislike it, regardless. Primarily because the masked guy not being a bad guy at the end just came out of nowhere, didn't make sense, made Squidward look like a jerk, and all in all, just didn't feel right. All in all, I think they had the right idea for an episode, I'm just not sure the lesson was taught right. The episode was setting up for the guy Squidward thought was a crook to learn the lesson that stealing is wrong, when the ending just threw in for Squidward to learn the lesson that revenge is wrong.
      Like I said, though, that's just my opinion. We're all different, and we have different opinions. Heck, I've known people to say that SpongeBob's first 3 seasons were the worst, and it's newest episodes are the best.

    I remember this being the first post-movie episode I watched. I was really disappointed by it and it set me up to hate post movie Spongebob! I can't remember why - maybe I thought the premise was stupid or the plot was too convoluted or something, but literally the only gag I can remember liking was the one where Dream Patty says he'll always be with Spongebob - not in his heart, but in his arteries.
    Maybe I was a little unfair to the episode. I should really rewatch it sometime and see if I still feel the same way.

    Apparently this episode is the last one written by an original writer (c.h. Greenblatt). If you take into account the plot and humor, I honestly consider this the only post-2004 episode (so-far) that lives up to the first three seasons. Sure there are other post-2004 episodes which are good, but they only come close to what this episode is.

    Wow. A Spongy Bits video on a Good Episode. I like it. About the animation in Season 4, I disagree about it. I thought the animation wasn't as good as the animation from Season 3, which in my opinion has the best animation in the entire Spongebob franchise. As for the episode, I like it. It's memorable. Say, do you think you could do another Spongy Bits video on Karate Island since it is my favorite in all of Season 4.
