- Learn how to use Google Jamboard, an online interactive whiteboard, for remote teaching. In this week's education technology tutorial, edtech enthusiast Sam Kary shows different ideas for how to create interactive remote lessons using Google Jamboard.
Google Jamboard can be used for synchronous or asynchronous remote teaching, and of course can be a useful tool for promoting interactivity in the classroom as well.

You mentioned in the video you wished there was a way to lock the features to your jamboard. You can create the jamboard and save it as a picture. Then make a new jamboard, insert the picture you created, resize as needed and add new features on top of the picture. That way students won't be able to make changes to the content.
Hi Venessa, Yes, that's true, though I've played around with it and can't students still just delete the entire background picture all together? Or am I missing something? I do see the benefit of at least not being able to edit over writing, but there doesn't appear to be a way to peg the image to the board. Are you experiencing something different?

@@NewEdTechClassroom You could add a clipart-frame with a "clear background", enlarge it to the size of the board over the image. Then, you can write over the "clear background" without modifying your original information/images.
First of all...thank you to all of you for providing instruction during this unusual situation! So, I'm a "newbie", and I tried everything all of you suggested...and I couldn't get it to work! I really wanted to be able to use a Jamboard for math practice, but there just wasn't any way to "lock" whatever problems I might place on the Jamboard in place so students wouldn't mess with them. I know this can be done with a Google Slide, but I was hoping... I chose "send feedback to Google" and told them to "Get on the ball!" and improve the Jamboard's functionality...hmmm...is "functionality" the right word?...still learning...
I do exactly as Venessa mentions, and I save a copy if I plan on using it again. I make my layout, take a screenshot, and then use that as a background. I don't really mind if the students mess with it as it is keeping them engaged. If I want to reuse it, then I use the saved copy and make another save copy if I want to use it multiple times. I like to use it as a virtual 4 corners, etc.

Great tutorial!! Your presentation hit upon so many important points beyond just usage, such as, how to teach students "digital citizenship". Being a middle school teacher those are issues that we face when we are teaching interactively 😉.

I used this in the spring and had first and second graders using it. It's really amazing how it allowed me to do a short lesson and then I put a post it on the pages following with their names so they could do a little independent work. Even at that young age, they figured it out quickly. Thanks for this video because there were more options I didn't know when I learned it quickly on my own in the spring!

I've been using it as a math teacher. I save a master & share copies with full editing. I screen shot from slides to use as graphic organizers. For scaffolding, I use the brush tool & color code sides, terms, etc. Works best with small groups. I wish the tool were integrated with slides.

I'm a high school English teacher. I see how this could be a great way for students to collaborate in small groups or pairs and then submit their efforts without violating social distance protocols.

We will probably start classes again with some students being physically in class and others connected from home. So, using Jamboard on a SMARTBoard while sharing screen would be an interesting solution to use; giving online students the opportunity to participate and present students can walk to the whiteboard and use it too.

I tried Jamboard with a spelling word sort activity in breakout rooms. I copied the same page 11 times (so all 11 pages were the same) and put a post-it on each page that had the breakout room number (e.g. breakout room 1, breakout room 2, etc.). The kids worked on the page that matched their breakout room number.
Not all of the students were able to open the link from the chat. A coworker had the same problem, so now we're posting them in Google Classroom just in case.
I also learned to make a copy before we use a Jamboard that I retitle "Student Copy of . . . " so that I can use it again or share it without making all of the corrections/changes to get it back to the original.
FYI--you can also change the order of your board pages by clicking the little arrow under the page number image (e.g. 3/9=page 3 of 9) and dragging the Jamboard pages right or left.

@@toddnelson8770 I make the Jamboards on my Mac through my Chrome browser. Most of the students have Chromebooks, and are using the Jamboards I share with them via Google Classroom. The link in the Zoom chat didn't work for every student, so I went to Google Classroom; then I select kids or ask for volunteers to share their screen so it's not me talking all of the time. : )
Here's a math Jamboard I made for Eureka Math/Zearn (Grade 4, Module 6, Lesson3--meant as review for 5th graders:

The last option intrigued me, where each student has there own individual jam board.
Would students be able to work on their own separate jamboard all at the same time? I would be interested in using that as their virtual notebook, that I could check out from time to time. And would there be an efficient way to create a page with a problem on it on MY Jamboard, and then copy that page, or pages, into all of the other jamboards? It would be a great way to create a warmup with maybe 5 equations that they all work on individually.

Yes! I've been using this regularly, creating a Jamboard and then linking to it on Google Classroom and choosing "make a copy for each student." We've already used this for a variety of projects and note-taking sessions! I'm loving this tool!! (If I want everyone in class to work on the same Jamboard, I just choose "students can edit" when I assign the Jamboard in Google Classroom.) This one tool has made synchronous teaching and learning far more fun and creative than I expected. :)

Thank you for this. I noticed today when I tried to use Jamboard with my whole class that it would only let 23 students in? I was trying to assign different groups (in breakout rooms) to work on a specific slide in the Jam that I numbered ahead of time. Is there a way around this problem? Or did I do something wrong?

Hi Jay, yes, there's definitely a lag. You might want to look into whiteboard.fi, but that also has some lag.

I have seen tutorials of Jamboard where the user is able to import slides or different files from his or her google drive onto the jamboard. However, when I attempt to do this, I am only allowed to import images. I would like to import my google slides as a background, write on them (work out algebra problems) while using screencastify to make instructional videos. The only work around I have is to save my slides as images. This is a bit time consumming. Is there a way I can import my slides or notes pdfs onto a new jamboard?
Get Web paint chrome extension to write on your slides. No need to import onto jamboard.

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for your question! The only way to get a Slide into Jamboard is to do like you say, download it as an image and then upload it to Jamboard. I agree that that's overly time consuming, and think you can achieve what you're trying to do without using Jamboard (or Slides) at all.
If you definitely want to use your Slides, I would get either Hypatia or EquatIO to add math problems directly to your slides, and then, like Hefjur suggested below, get the Web Paint Chrome Extension to be able to annotate directly on top of the slides. That's probably the way I'd go if just using this for instruction as opposed to live collaboration.

Jennifer, my question to you is what devices do you have available to you. If you have an iPad and computer, Doceri is a great tool as well that you can just present on your computer and use an iPad to write over what is being shown on your computer screen. You can also record what you do with audio and post it straight to TH-cam. That is how I make my instructional videos. You can use Doceri with pretty much anything that shows up on your computer screen. It is not free unfortunately but is is relatively cheap considering what it can do.
Are you familiar with Schoology? Is there a way to have students turn in their jam board to Schoology as opposed to google classroom?
Hi Stephanie, sorry for the long delay in responding here. Right now I don't believe Jamboard is available as a Google Drive integration with Schoology, so your only option would be to link directly out to Jamboard. You might not want to use it for assignments in this case, but instead use it for quick collaborations.

Thank you for the video! You're absolutely correct--this works perfectly for math instruction. During remote learning I used the Jamboard app on my iPad and used my Apple Pencil. Then I would open the same Jamboard in the browser on my computer and shared the screen in my Zoom sessions. My plan for next year is to record some mini-lessons using Jamboard and Google Meet or Screencastify so I can post them in my Google Classroom for future viewing.

I used Jamboard as an interactive Yearbook at the end of the last school year. The kids loved it. they got to post pictures and write notes on it. Then I downloaded it as a pdf and shared it with the kids.

Pairing this with an iPad or Android Tablet and a stylus/apple pencil really brings the Math/whiteboard sessions to life! For those kids lucky enough to have both a laptop & a tablet, anyway. You can have your Jamboard open on your computer browser and iPad at the same time. Present the browser, write on the iPad. The Jamboard iPad app is quite good. It's intuitive and fun for kids to write on their tablet and have it show up in the Zoom/Meets class. Just like writing on the whiteboard in front of class! 😁

I am a university professor of elementary education preservice teachers. I plan to use Jamboard as we run a hybrid flex (hyflex) class of synchronous online and on campus students this fall. I open each class with a question or a quote and have asked students to talk at tables; I have also had students create posters together and frequently talk and share their ideas in class. Because we cannot share physical materials, will be socially distanced and masked in person, as well as students conversing on campus and online at the same time (Zoom breakout rooms), Jamboard will be perfect for these and more! Thanks for your great tutorial with visuals and examples!
