  • Learn how to make interactive Google Slides with Pear Deck. In this week's education technology tutorial, Sam Kary shows teachers how to use Pear Deck, a Google Slides Add-on, to dramatically increase student participation. You can use Pear Deck synchronously or asynchronously, so it is also a great choice for remote teaching!
    Teachers will learn how to use Pear Deck to transform Google Slides lessons from one-way lectures to interactive conversations with students. With Pear Deck, teachers can ask students to respond to questions with short answers, multiple choice, numbers, icons, and even drawings.

    Thank you for this Pear Deck information. I struggled and spent hours on my own learning Pear Deck. This would be been a valuable resource. Brilliantly done!

      As long as you don't end the session, students can login to the same Pear Deck with the same login. You'll probably want to change the settings to "student paced" so that they can advance the slides on their own since it sounds like you might be assigning it for them to do outside of class. If they close their web browser, they will need to go back to joinpd.com and reenter the code in order to get back in. Hope that helps!

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cory, I like and use them both. Nearpod offers significantly more functionality, but Pear Deck allow you to add interactivity to slides you've created yourself, whereas in Nearpod the Slides would show up after slides you've created and are more like a template, if that makes sense. Still, Nearpod is the more powerful tool of the two by a long-shot.

    Hi Sam, really enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. Thank You so much for extending a helping hand!
    First question: Do you provide a tutorial for each add-on or app you use for interactive learning or do kids find them to be fairly self-explanatory?
    Second Question: For Pear Deck, are parents or students skittish about students signing up for these Apps because of data collection? I am hoping in the approaching fall of 2020 my students or their parents will not be afraid of signing up.

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike, it really depends. If it's a more complicated program like Adobe Spark or even Google Classroom, then I do make tutorials. For programs like Pear Deck don't make tutorials (though I did make one for my student channel!).
      Regarding data collection, most education programs are COPPA compliant, meaning they aren't allowed to collect student data, but it's definitely something you'd have to figure out at your school site because guidelines vary pretty dramatically in terms of what's considered acceptable, what isn't.

    Love your videos...increasingly frustrated with this platform. It seems incredibly limiting to me unless I'm doing something wrong. As I'm putting the presentation together there's no way for me to check my progress without launching the lesson. That seems really counter intuitive.
    When I add animations to my google slides those animations don't appear when I launch the lesson via Peardeck.
    What am I doing wrong?

    • @NewEdTechClassroom

      Hi Russell,
      Yeah, it's true that you can't see exactly how the lesson will show up until you actually run it (the same is true of Nearpod). One option would be to set up a demo student account to be able to see how your lesson looks before actually launching it live.

    Hi! Today, I started my peardeck session just the same but it never launched a join code or teacher session, takeaways, etc. I am on "premium" free option through July. Not sure why it's not working today? I have had 5 successful summer school days with it so far. I "started" the session on my slide show, picked instructor paced, and waited while it was "launching presentation" but then no join code nor was there a code on the top right corner of my slides. No teacher session window popped up and no prompts for take-aways when I ended the session. I could see that the peardeck bar was on the bottom of a lot of my slides...

    Hello! First, thank you for your video! Second, I have a few questions. 1. When you go into student-paced mode, can you designate the slide where the assignment ends (let's say you have a 30 slide presentation, but you only want students to go up to slide 15 for HW), 2. once it's in student-paced mode, do students still see the responses they generated earlier in class, and 3. if you as the teacher need to create a new session for another period of the same class, do you need to make a copy of the presentation for each class in order to keep things clean and organized? Thank you!

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So sorry for the long delay in responding here. When in student-paced, you can change it at any time to be a live lesson instead, but this will impact all the slides, not just an individual slide. I'm not aware of a way to achieve what you want to accomplish on an individual basis. You'd probably be better off just pushing out the initial set of 15 slides first.
      Regarding the second question, you don't need to make a copy of the presentation when launching a new one. You only need to relaunch a lesson, generate a new login code, and that will separate your classes for you. Best of luck!

You're definitely going to get a lot more traction out of the paid version, which will also let you give students feedback on their responses as they are coming in. So yes, you will have to invite them to PearDeck in order for them to use the interactive elements.
