  • There's a lot of talk lately about the SSG (Super Shotgun) being weakened since the latest patch.
I happened to be in a sacrifice match last night where I found myself firing several shots at very close range whilst moving parallel to my target and thought it might make for an interesting video to see how much damage I was doing. I don't have a direct comparison to the previous patch but it definitely feels weaker to me...I'm pretty close throughout but hit for 40, 54 and 99...my aim is perhaps not perfectly central but felt very good in the moment (I was playing at 98fps and recording at 60fps which might make a slight difference to where my cross-hair was when firing in the video ?) and ofc there are sometimes "what you see is not reality" because of the network but just as a "for the sake of argument" this felt like three pretty decent close range shots with the SSG to me and I would have hoped/expected to hit a bit harder than I did.

So many people seem to feel it's weak now, I'm pretty sure they'll change it back...I just hope it doesn't take until next season !

    What did they change specifically?
My guess is that ppl with low sens hit more than ppl with high sens doing fast movement while shooting... well it just doesnt hit at all almost. I use rail as shotgun instead now since I play high sens. Doing a flick ssg with my sense, even spot on it sometimes just register 9 dmg. Do the same with rail and it's an instand 90. Highly unscientific statement. But rapha that also uses high sens seem to have the same issue while some players still hit hard with it.

It is a bit strange, it's definitely weaker this season, I don't know exactly what's wrong, I think the spread is maybe happening too fast so "point blank" is only achievable if you're more or less touching your opponent and you're only going to get modest damage even at very close range now. It should definitely be put back to what it was last season imo.

Remember the good old days when that shit did 140 damage?

Wow, really ? I don't remember it ever being that high but I do remember it being VERY effective in the early days (120 for a point blank for sure...maybe 130 ?). I recall having good damage at medium range as well and would say it was arguably a bit OP back then as it felt like it was on equal footing with the primary trio (RL/RG/LG). It wasn't long after that it had a slight nerf and then another and I thought after that it was fine. A while back I remember one patch introduced insane knockback, LOL, I remember firing at TheQueen as she jumped around the staircase on Koth and she went flying out the window ! It did feel somewhat OTT (and OP in that aspect) to be fair ;-) but (rightly) that got reset and tbh before the last patch I thought it was completely fine ? I wasn't aware that it needed any more tweaks or nerfs or that anyone might be calling for them ? Either way it has definitely felt under-powered since the latest patch. I actually watched a couple of videos about real shotguns and sawed off shotguns being used against balistic dummys today LOL, I wanted to see if there's any parallel with reality but imo the QC SSG seems weaker than reality at short to medium ranges whether it's "sawed off" or not now.

@@tigerblue42 Yeah for one short time it was that ridiculous afaik.
I think a lot of the maps being rather small also had something to do with the ssg always being rather powerful in QC, but I don't mind it rivaling meta weapons in its intended ideal situation. (I personally really enjoy the "risk" of using weapons outside the trilogy to potentially outdamage players with SNG or SSG).
I think last update they made the spread of shotguns a bit tighter and now wanted to (over) compensate by making them do even less damage? To me the ssg seemed like a problem that didn't need fixing as it felt just fine for a long time.
And I really hope they don't suddenly take reality into account lol. That would be a little silly in quake.

@@TediI47 Yeah good point about "reality" it was more the spread I was looking at in that I thought shotgun spread irl wasn't as vast as the SSG in QC (causing more pellets to miss) even if it were sawed off...but as you say, in any case Quake is not based on real life LOL. I thought it was fine before the last patch so I just hope it goes back as it was.

SSG is definitely bad that patch, considering how teve had to throw that RL vs SSG fight to lose it (equal if not superior stack, smaller hitbox, no ult DK, but misses two easy killing shots) (throwing a fight happens)
also your three SSG shots look more or less the same to me, but somehow the first two are only 40-52 while the third is 90+. feels like it should've been 60 damage at least.
SSG has been overtuned in the past (I'm pretty sure it did indeed deal 140 max at some point like someone else pointed out) but this feels unnecessary.
I can understand that SSG should feel weak against rockets, but in the clip it looks like i'd be weak against close range starting machinegun lmao

It's definitely weaker this season than last and now feels under-powered to me. I don't know exactly what's wrong, I think the spread is maybe happening too fast so "point blank" is only achievable if you're more or less touching your opponent. The SSG has definitely been OP in years gone by (140 max ? wow !) but I thought it's been fine for ages now so I'm not sure why there was a need to change it now.
