Air brakes do not determine whether or not a CDL is required…. GVWR does. You can rent a truck from Penske with air brakes and not need a CDL. (Just an example).
Agreed. If Air Brakes would require a CDL there are a whole of geezers behind the wheel of Class A motorhomes that are flaunting the law. GVWR also isn't a factor (in most states). Some of those Class A motorhomes tip the scales at > 40,000; no CDL required. The key is "Commercial." If you are making money with the rig, get yo'self a CDL. Pro Tip: Many insurers will give you a discount on a large "truck" chassis rig if you do, in fact, have a valid CDL (even if it's just a Class 'C' license).
Yeah that's an extremely extremely common misconception... I still hear that all the time at Work, itut it does hold true that 95% of the trucks that have them require them anyway for other reasons
Nice to see a real review from someone who actually owns one. I am planning on building a tiny house on a 48' gooseneck trailer, and this truck is what I have been considering buying to pull the house. I like that this truck is still small enough to be driven stand alone
5th wheel is really the way to go on a trailer that size compared to a bumper pull riding on a ball hitch. That's a wiggly nightmare on a windy day and trucks going by will try to suck you over into their lane as they pass by in the fast lane. Way more stable and comfortable drive with a 5th wheel.
Always nice watching these videos and seeing how much knowledge you know bout these vehicles. Super cool n glad to see you are posting more. I'm tryna keep up. The air horn was my favorite part!
Air brake does not equate to needing a CDL. Anyone can rent a 26’ truck from Penske or wherever, they’ll have air brakes. CDL is about weight. 26000 lbs or above is commercial. Worth knowing if you plan to get on the highway: don’t get over that weight in a rental if you aren’t commercially licensed, because if you hit a weight station, a state police officer will ruin your day.
CDL & air brake endorsements vary from state to state. In the state I live in no CDL is required if you register the truck as a RV. You can drive a class 8 without a CDL as long as it is registered as an RV. I know Texas requires an air brake endorsement.
If you are in a wind and rain storm and continue to drive 75 mph without slowing down, you are endangering yourself as well as your family and others on the road. Please slow down under these conditions.
It is a hassle insuring them but there more like between $160 and $210,000 new with full options on the East Coast here the body never changed from 05 to present nice medium duty trucks
Bought mine new in 2010 through my business but used for personal only, toy hauler and racecar trailer. Several years ago, I put it in my name and have never had a problem with insuring it either way in California.
I just purchased a 2022 Freightliner M2 106 Sport Chassis with air brakes installed by the privious owner and I asked my sales guy, doi I need a CDL to operate my personal use or "Not for Hire" Sport Chassis and he stated I do not need a CDL to operate my SC with air brakes? I live in MN not sure if that make a differnece. Also, prices must have been much higher a year ago, you can purchase a brand new well appointed SC right now for $190K-$220K.
So to address that constant shaking now you know why Freightliners are called “freightshakers”. But great video never ever thought about that set up pretty damn cool.
Air brakes has nothing to do with CDL, you can register a 379 Peterbilt as a RV and use your regular drivers license as long as you don’t pull commercial with it. CDL is based off of weight , if you’re using it commercially
That's crazy you used to have to stop every 30 to 40 minutes to fill up your RAM pulling your trailer lol when I'm on a long trip pulling my trailer having to stop every 3 hours as a pain in the ass I couldn't imagine making 10 stops in that time
0:58 for a CDL to be required first and foremost you must be using the vehicle for commerce (at least in every state I've lived in, check the law in your own state.). For example the law will say a CDL is required for "any COMMERCIAL vehicle with....." then lists brakes and weights, etc. If the vehicle isn't being used for commerce you can stop reading at that point, the weights/air brake requirements don't apply to you. One exception is usually the hazmat section just states "any vehicle" not "any commercial vehicle" so hazmat may upgrade the licensing requirement even if used for private use. Sometimes if you're carrying enough passengers (15+) this will also make it CDL regardless of if it's for commerce. This is why people talk about the "RV" exception and why RV's don't require a CDL, they aren't being used for commerce. It isn't that the law explicitly says "RV's dont require a CDL" (usually) its that the law says only vehicles used for commerce do. This is also why a "farm exception" DOES often explicitly exist because in that case it IS being used for commerce so a specific exception is needed to be given (usually within X miles of your farm that you own and operate). Also for the record, if you ARE using it for commerce you'll exceed weight ratings with something like this almost immediately and you'll need a CDL. Even a 1 ton pickup towing almost anything will almost immediately surpass weight rating requirements for a CDL, much less something of this size. If you're needing this much truck, and you're using it for commerce, you're going to need a CDL. It isn't like you're buying this thing to pull a 5,000 lb trailer.
Great video Griffin - Thanks for the review! If your ever on I-40 driving through Oklahoma, drop by the factory and say hi to the guys who built your truck!
Great video. Where did you end up finding this truck? There's a company in Indiana that pretty much sells only these, but the prices seem a bit high. We haul a 40' flatbed trailer with a 2020 F-450 and we're looking at one of these instead, but not super easy to find.
IMO dump that 2020 Ford before the 10 speed tranny craps out on you. Gal here on TH-cam hot shots with one and hers burned up at ~150k and cost 8 grand for a new one.
@@BrandonLeech We pulled the trigger on a Sportchassis. I'd actually be thrilled if the tranny went out on the F450... We have an extended warranty which would cover the total cost. Would be nice to extract that value out of the warranty. 😀
I had a 2006 sport chassis insurance was expensive. Progressive insures them now I was told . I got the same fuel mileage as a 1 ton diesel. I think new price was 65k in 2006
In Pennsylvania, you need a CDL because you must have an air brake endorsement in order to drive air brakes if you get stopped and you don’t, you will be fined
You had to stop every 30 to 40 minutes in the Ram to fuel up? I seriously doubt that. I can drive for five hours in my F350 pulling a 16,500 pound trailer before having to stop for fuel.
You had me until the MPGs.... My 2500HD Duramax with flatbed with sides gets 15.5 at 70MPH. I have a Titan 52 gallon fuel tank so I can go pretty far without stopping. I should get a little better MPGs once I get the turbo vanes to stop sticking. RME
Should’ve done a ford then even a 250 can tow 17k not a huge deal. You feel it but I’d gladly deal all day with it but this freightliner looks sweeter.
The interior is kind of junk on these for how much they want for one. Freightliner isn't known to be the best there anyway compared to say, Paccar. Heavier duty rigs though compared to a big 3 1-ton. IMO not practical enough for every day use compared to a pickup and you rarely see anybody trucking or hot-shotting with one. They're kind of just luxury toys for guys who want to haul their big 5th wheel or pony trailer in style.
with air brakes, you don't need a CDL you just need air brake endorsement on your standard license for most states. You only need a CDL if you're using the truck to make money that's the purpose of the CDL because you're using the vehicle to make money government's gotta get their take first
Freight liner coming out with one for only eight grand and it’s basic and you can add any features you want and that’s the starting price is eight grand and it’s a four-cylinder they have a six cylinder or V8 little bit more money but it’s a 2005 just coming out this year it’s gonna be nice way cheaper than all the other bullshit
Nice video BUTTTTTT and thats a big BUTT. You Do Not Have to have a CDL because a truck has air brakes. The issue for CDL is the GVWR. It has nothing to do with air vs hydraulic brakes. Google it, don't take my word for it.
That is true, must be under 19500 gvwr even in a pickup truck; however, if it has air brakes most states require an air brake endorsement on the drivers license and in some states you need a cdl to get the endorsement
Bigger trucks bigger breaks. In Texas we need a class B CDL at least if the GWR is 26,001 pounds or more. ✌️ ☮️ and it’s just a bumper pool if they chase he just run who cares. 🥷🏿
As long as the GVWR of the unit is not more than 26,000 you technically don't need a CDL to drive it even if it has air brakes. However, hook a trailer to it and go hauling for hire and you'd need a class A license without a doubt. Only way around that is if it was registered as an RV for personal/not for hire use and state laws vary on that.
Goodness this video seems to be filled with questionable/misleading information. I’m not sure if you just threw out numbers to increase views or what but you should really make an effort to be at least somewhat accurate. I was just looking at these at NFR in Vegas last week and brand new they were selling between $189k and $229k, you claimed $300-350k. You absolutely do not need a cdl just because they have air breaks yet you claim you do. You can find them used and just a few years old with under 50k miles all day long for $125-150k yet you claimed way higher! You claimed you liked driving these way more because in your ram you had to fill up every 30-40 minutes. I have a f350 with a 36 gallon fuel tank and tow a 16k trailer and can go 4-5 hours before I need fuel! So either your getting a 1 mile a gallon in fuel, you have a 4 gallon fuel tank in your truck or you just flat out don’t know what the heck you’re talking about.
"I bought this used" "This thing rattles..." Not mutually exclusive phrases.. You are a value shopper as evidenced by buying used and insuring through a insurance company being sued by the State Of California for illegally steering good drivers into assigned risk pool carriers owned by Mercury but under a different name to cover up their scam, and while the insurance company choice does not relate to the vibration issue, the "value shopper" may. There are different levels of quality in diesel fuels and distributors. Yup, just like a civilian can buy a Deuce and a Halfwith no issues.
None of that is true in Alabama. According to the dmv there the main determinant is if the vehicle will be used for commercial or private use.

Can I do non CDL with a truck like this with a 35+5 trailer
Do you need a cdl to drive this truck?
Great looking truck
What is fuel consumption for this model?
I own a trucking business with my dad. The insurance is insane, I got quoted 50k 😅How much did you end paying?
Do you need a cdl to drive this truck
How long is the delivery time for a truck like this? If you ordered it from new
Current lead time is 5-7 months on a freshie!

This is NOT a review of the $8K truck by the ad from before clicking here😒😏
Is why it's rattling it was cheaply built that's why it's rattling if you get one built by bolt you won't have that problem
