Sicilian War Elephants (or even Battle Elephants) seem like a big winner to me. Halbs absolutely shred Elephants due to bonus damage but those HP pools are massive.

They are, aren't they... Wierd. I remember in the original game the knights would switch hands in which they held their swords and shields so that the shield always was towards the player/screen. I thought you just saw a cataphract riding towards the right side of the screen, but I checked, and they are consistantly left handed.
I believe SOTL or T90 said it, while SOTL knows a lot about the background mechanics of the game, he's an average player. He'd probably get crushed by the players of HC4 :'( But seeing him talk in a T90 steam would be pretty funny

also remember that logistica is in effect as soon as you are fighting in groups larget than 1v1. Essentially logistica in fights of more than 3v3 units adds 10dmg per hit on top of their base attack, which is quite nuts when you think about it.

Cataphract light performance for the price of one chevalier upgrade looks like a good deal compared to the insane cost stack that is elite Cataphracts with Logistica.
Well the most simple reason for superiority of Cataphracts is: 1. It is a Paladin equivalent by definition, not a Cavalier equivalent. 2. It is produced from Castles. 3. It costs a ton to upgrade. 4. It is meant to have a different counter, just like Champions.

@@arcan762 ACtually, a mix of cataphracts and Paladins is best combo vs archers. Some archers will target paladins, taking some hits off of the cataphracts.. then once they get in melee range, archers health is no match for byzantines trample damage. Usually if you tech into Byzantines Cataphracts (unless you are playing vs a civ who doesn't get cav) you must also tech into another stable unit to deal with other horses, which is paladin (more than just other horses, so more uses) and camels. Usually standard unit comp for byzantine's is Trash units + camels/paladin + Cataphract + a siege unit. Very good civ honestly

2:06 doesn't the 25% only apply to base attack and not bonus damage as well. So instead the order for the halberdier would go 10 X 1.25 = 12.5 (base) - 5 = 7.5 (armour) + 16 = 23.5 (bonus)

It's things like this that make me think that units should have an attack speed stat clearly visible, and to have unit upgrades include describing changes to their attack speed.
Have you done a video about absolute population effectiveness? I feel an examination of paladins for generic civs vs cataphracts, vs war elephants would be an interesting analysis for you to tackle.
I'd love to see an analysis which explains how 1 of 2 identical units fighting each other wins and the other dies. Like a 2 scouts fighting in 1v1... is it pure RNG? Or is the outcome predetermined? Does the game's internal clock favour one player at certain time? I did some basic testing and if for example 10 blue scouts fought 10 red scouts, all of the red scouts won. Same applies to any other units (champions vs champions etc.). Another testing round it's the blue color that won... I can do more testing myself, but I'd love Spirit Of The Law to do it and share results with us ^^
@@niksutliff I've seen many of those videos, but I probably didn't explain myself well. For example 10 groups of units fighting 1vs1 have the same outcome at certain time. 10 blue scouts die, 10 red scouts survive with 3 HP etc.
IIRC, it used to be determined by player position in the lobby. Lobby host had engine priority. Applied not only to first strikes but also unit pathing for the purposes of blocking. DE has tinkered with this several times now to remove the manipulable element of lobby position. Based on your testing, it seems likely that the game just randomizes priority at the start of a match.
Fun fact: Maths (or in fact any subject) is not boring. It depends on the capability of the teacher. I have understood Lanchester's laws from SotL more than I understood anything in my last 2 semesters at University.

When I was ten, I thought that trample damage applied when they where moving through enemy units. The description in the manual was very misleading

in addition to their faster rate of fire, generating a bit of gold while farming is great to create a few more of these gold-intensive units
I've been playing aoe 2 since original release and had no idea elevation bonus was a thing...this is why i stick to single player.
The Devs need to buff Byzantines, Blast furnace and or Bloodlines

Rather than broken nightmare made possible by Caths with bloodline and furnace I'd rather have they reduce price of elite cath and/or logistica

There should be a mode/Mod where you can create your own perfect Civilization by choosing:
- The Civ (Bonuses and Techtree)
- The Elite Unit
- The Castle Age Unique Technology
- The Imperial Unique Technology
- The Team Bonus
Should be pretty fun!

Is it just me or are the orange halberdiers attacking faster than the red ones (especially in the single cata- cavalier side by side)?
Isn't the Elite Cataphract's damage against infantry 16 not 12? I thought Cata was 12 and Elite Cata 16. I respect your vast knowledge just heard conflicting info.
The Cavalier is one of my fav models from the game.
It's things like this that make me think that units should have an attack speed stat clearly visible, and to have unit upgrades include describing changes to their attack speed.
Have you done a video about absolute population effectiveness? I feel an examination of paladins for generic civs vs cataphracts, vs war elephants would be an interesting analysis for you to tackle.

I'd love to see an analysis which explains how 1 of 2 identical units fighting each other wins and the other dies.
Like a 2 scouts fighting in 1v1... is it pure RNG? Or is the outcome predetermined? Does the game's internal clock favour one player at certain time?
I did some basic testing and if for example 10 blue scouts fought 10 red scouts, all of the red scouts won. Same applies to any other units (champions vs champions etc.).
Another testing round it's the blue color that won... I can do more testing myself, but I'd love Spirit Of The Law to do it and share results with us ^^

@@niksutliff I've seen many of those videos, but I probably didn't explain myself well. For example 10 groups of units fighting 1vs1 have the same outcome at certain time. 10 blue scouts die, 10 red scouts survive with 3 HP etc.
IIRC, it used to be determined by player position in the lobby. Lobby host had engine priority. Applied not only to first strikes but also unit pathing for the purposes of blocking.
DE has tinkered with this several times now to remove the manipulable element of lobby position. Based on your testing, it seems likely that the game just randomizes priority at the start of a match.
There seem to be quite a few left handed units in AOE2 (at least both Cataphracts and Halbs)

I have understood Lanchester's laws from SotL more than I understood anything in my last 2 semesters at University.
So TIL cataphracts are extremely good against cavalry counters.
