    "Too Much Heaven" is a song by the Bee Gees, which was the band's contribution to the "Music for UNICEF" fund. They performed it at the Music for UNICEF Concert on 9 January 1979. The song later found its way to the group's thirteenth original album, Spirits Having Flown. It hit No. 1 in both the United States and Canada. In the United States, the song was the first single out of three from the album to interrupt a song's stay at #1. "Too Much Heaven" knocked "Le Freak" off the top spot for two weeks before "Le Freak" returned to #1 again.[1] "Too Much Heaven" also rose to the top three in the United Kingdom. In the US, it would become the fourth of six consecutive No. 1s, equalling the record set by Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles for the most consecutive No. 1 songs. The 6 Bee Gee songs are "How Deep Is Your Love", "Stayin' Alive", "Night Fever", "Too Much Heaven", "Tragedy" and "Love You Inside Out". The songs spanned the years of 1977, 1978 and 1979.
    Robin Gibb reportedly said on the Bee Gees' interview for Billboard in 2001 that this track was one of his favourite songs of the Bee Gees

    To Much Heaven has literally saved children. The Bee Gee’s wrote & released it in 1978. It was already topping charts world wide when they performed it Jan. 1979, for The United Nations Children's Fund fundraiser, “Music for UNICEF.” They then donated all royalties & the publishing rights to UNICEF, the 1st band to make such a donation to charity. The last official tally I saw was 2011, saying UNICEF had received more than 10 million British pounds from it, for emergency food & healthcare. Elsewhere someone said it hit 20 million as of 2019 (but I haven’t found an official source for that).

    They were divine...came out like gangbusters with their disco classics! But they had been around in the late 60s with great songs too. If you ever have a chance to see the film 'Saturday Night Fever,' you'll get a feel for how NY nightlife was in the disco era. The BeeGees provided much of the music for that film.

    It's like they invented harmony. Live band, no auto tune, no computerized voice enhancement and one mic for all three of them. Back then (1979). singing was just pure, raw talent. By the date of this recording, the BeeGees had already been singing together professionally for 21 years when Barry was 12 years old and the twins were just 9. All of the Gibb brothers including little brother, Andy, could sing in that amazing falsetto voice. But Barry was the master. He was able to exorcise more control over it. The Gibbs were, in my opinion, the most multi-talented families in music history. They wrote their own songs as well as writing songs for many other musical greats.This song was included on a compilation album to benefit UNICEF. There were many artists who recorded songs on the album, but the BeeGees gave all the royalties from this song in any form. In, at that time, an unprecedented move, they also gave UNICEF the publishing rights to Too Much Heaven. To date, Too Much Heaven has raised over 11 million dollars for UNICEF. In 1967, they wrote a song called To Love Somebody which appeared on their third album titled BeeGees 1st, but their first internationally, as the first two albums were only released in Australia. BeeGees 1st was released in July '67. Otis Redding was set to record To Love Somebody on his next album. Sadly, Otis was killed in a plane crash, Dec 10,1967. I thought for the longest time that they didn't record it themselves until after the death of Otis Redding. Their brother Andy Gibb had a very successful solo career as well until his death on March 10,1988. Just 5 days after turning 30. Andy had developed myocarditis, inflammation of the heart, which was brought on by a viral infection While most people recover from myocarditis, Andy's body was unable to fight the infection due to his history of drug use. Soo sad! The 1st time I heard this song, I was 15 years old. I was sitting on the floor in our living room. They sang with so much emotion that I had tears running down my face. It didn't hurt that before this I found out that Barry and I shared the same birthday, me in 1963 and him in 1946. While I was crying, my daddy came in and told me to knock it off or he'd change the channel. He was mean.

      Not to take a thing away from the Stylistics (they were great), but they formed 10+ years after the Bee Gees & in a different country. By the time they released their 1st song (1971), the Bee Gees were already internationally famous. Musicians routinely influence each other & there may have come a time when a Stylistics song influenced a Bee Gee song or two, but if you listen to songs like; To Love Somebody (1967), I’ve Got To Get A Message To You (1968) & How Can You Mend A Broken Heart (1970), it’s not a stretch to think the Stylistics &/or writers Thom Bell & Linda Creed may have drawn some influence from early Bee Gees.

    The group the Bee Gees were brothers. All 3 brothers have falsetto range which made them that more talented. The Bee Gees have been recording as a group since the early 60's. The group became even more popular in the 70's. Their music could easily stand up today in rotation on any R&B or Soft Rock Radio station. Sadly Barry Gibb the lead singer is the only brother still alive. The youngest brother Andy Gibb not in the group, but a great solo artist in his own right passed away first. Maurice Gibb passed away then Robin Gibb passed away leaving only Barry.

      @@p6833 He was too young, he was at least 10 years younger than his brothers. Barry, Maurice and Robin collaborated mostly background vocals on a few Andy Gibb songs. Andy sung on a few of the Gibb bothers songs. Unfortunately, Andy became addicted to drugs and by the time he cleaned up his act he suddenly passed away at the young age of 30 years old of a heart infection. He was the first of the Gibb brothers to pass away.

      @@p6833 Just to add info; Barry, Robin & Maurice started performing in 1955 (as The Rattlesnakes). They became the Bee Gee's in 1958 (the year Andy was born). By 1968, when Andy was 10, they were internationally known, having charted 7 songs in the US (+ the UK & elsewhere). They were all very supportive of Andy’s career. Barry wrote, co-produced & sang back-up on Andy’s 1st #1 hit, I Just Want To Be Your Everything. Another #1, Shadow Dancing, was written by all 4 brothers (again Barry sang back up & co-produced). Sadly, Andy’s drug addiction took a terrible toll on his health & career (he was dropped by his label), but his brothers kept trying to help (professionally & personally). Early 1988, they announced he'd join the Bee Gee’s, making them a quartet, but he died March 10, before that happened.

    • @p6833
      @p6833 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WN Safford - Wow, that.was a lot of info I'm hearing for the first time. They almost became a quartet. I'm more saddened now. And it's pretty painful to know even more now cause I just watched a 30 minute interview where Barry broke down, had to stop and started crying when he was shown old footage of him with his brothers. At that moment he finally accepted the lost of all his brothers. 💔

    Here are some facts about the Bee Gee's:
    1.Barry Gibbs is 2 years older than I am. I grew up in this Era called DISCO.
    2.Barry was the lead singer and his brother's were mostly backup, but all 3 were GREAT.
    3.This was Family Harmony at its best.
    (Three voices sound like one).
    4.They were a normal band until they tried something different.
    5.It was an accident, they decided to sing "FALSETTO" for fun.
    6.The people loved it, and DEMANDED more.
    7 This became their unique, signature sound, and trademark that shot them to the top.
    8. Barry was the lead singer, Robin and Maurice HARMONIZED ALSO IN FALSETTO.
    9.Their unique sound that made them famous.
    10 If you listen close you can hear the Falsetto of all 3.
    11. It became their standard. The Disco Era was dying at this point.
    12. The Bee Gee's Music, breathed new life into the Disco Era.
    13, That kept DISCO alive and popular for many more years.
    14. The Bee Gee's wrote 1030 songs in their life.
    15.They wrote many songs, for other famous artist, who made those songs famous.
    16.They broke many long standing records, in their lifetime.
    17. They wrote all of their own music.
    18. And all 3 played instruments themselves.
    19. They would be honored that a new generation is hearing their music.
    20. Feel free to check out my facts for yourself.

    This and How Deep Is Your Love are their best ballads. There are two other songs written by, I believe Barry, if not all three bros, that are as equally good. "If I Can't Have You" sung by Yvonne Elliman is far superior than the Bee Gees own recording haha. The BGs recording was released after Yvonne's and was on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The other song "Emotions" sung by Samantha Sang with the Bee Gees on background. You may be familiar with the cover done by Destiny's Child.

      Surprisingly yes once Maurice died in 2003 , barry and robin grieving was very different. Robin had to keep working solo to grieve and barry went quiet . Now that Barry is the last bee gee alive now he is making a comeback with new music as a permanent solo artist

    • @kevindobson6568
      @kevindobson6568 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      After Maurice died , barry and robin argued and didn't speak to each other for almost a decade. Once they reunited in 2009 to make new music that was short, oved when Robin got cancer and passed away in 2012 , the bee gees had alot of tragedy in their lives. They lost their, little brother Andy gibb just at age 30 in 1988 from drug abuse
