- This week we watch the winner of our "Most Requested Movies" poll, The Shawshank Redemption from 1994! This has always been one of my favorites and I'm glad Toni finally got to experience it as well!

Those who don't like cinema have no imagination. Those who don't like this movie have no soul. A masterpiece.
This was one of my Dad's favorite movies. He absolutely LOVED the line "I guess I just miss my friend" because it reminded him of all of his friends who had passed away. My dad rarely drank, never smoked, and lived to 92 years of age before passing away almost two years ago. Now, Red's line resonates with me also:

The idea of prison rape horrifies me.
the book is more horrific but this screenplay was written by Frank Darabont who also wrote the same screenplay for The Green Mile.
As much as I want to recommend The Mist for her, I don't know if she can handle that one. But Misery is another really good King adaptation.

Andy's escape is so impressive to me. He came up with the idea very early on during his incarceration, and for the next 19 years, he patiently and meticulously worked on it, hiding all the evidence. Then, when the time finally came, he executed his escape flawlessly, vanishing without a trace, robbing the corrupt warden blind, exposing the crimes committed by the prison authorities, and left behind money and a letter for his best friend Red, whenever he was released.
And he accomplished it all without saying a single word about it to anyone, not even his best friend.

Andy receives both Justice,and Revenge for himself,Tommy,and every inmate who have ever both abused by the corrupt Prison System.
Ironically he would have been dead after 25 yards from methane gas poisoning
Technically it was 17 years in the film- He got the idea 2 years after he came because he was carving his name in the wall.
He did what he had to do stay in that cell as well.

Also i have noticed in a couple of other reactions too how you put the actual value of whatever amount was at the time or if it is a different currency, it's a great detail.
I read the short story "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" back in the 80s. It was included in a book called "Different Seasons" by Stephen King. It also had the story "The Body" in it, which was adapted into "Stand By Me." I loved SBM so much that I had to read the book, and Shawshank ended up being my favorite story of the four featured in the book. (If you haven't seen it, SBM is also a fantastic movie, highly recommended.)
Since I'd read the story, I knew that the escape was coming. That wasn't the surprise for me. (Spoilers ahead for those who haven't read the story but want to...)
In the novella, Andy's money and alternate identity had already been set up for him before he went to prison. When the screenplay was changed up to the make the money come from the warden's dirty business, the poetic justice was so incredibly satisfying that it made the movie better than the book. That doesn't happen often, IMO, just because there are so many more details included in books that can't be squeezed into movies with their time constraints. But changing that one detail elevates the movie. It was perfectly done.
I see that you'll be watching "The Green Mile" soon. I can't wait for your reaction to that one. Toni, you'll need a pallet of tissue, fair warning. I hope you'll add "Stand By Me" to your list as well. Three of the least Stephen King-y Stephen King stories, and they're my three favorites from him. Go figure. Have a great weekend!

Frank Darabont the director has been 3 for 3 in adapting Stephen King stories (Shawshank, Green Mile and The Mist). Speaking of making changes that ended up making it better, the ending Frank came up with for The Mist was so good (but unbelievably gut-wrenching) that even Stephen King said it was better than his own ending. That's a compliment right there!

Hey David and of course Miss Toni...you guys picked another great one for sure. I have to be honest and say that I actually was in prison for under 2 yrs back in 1990 for a brutal fight I got into, and it wasn't near that brutal, but when they "tossed" cells, they were not very nice about it, and would destroy your cell practically. There was some rapes and assaults too; usually against child predators. Fortunately, I spent my time reading, working out, and minding my own business. It wasn't 20 yrs, but that 2 yrs felt like 20, and when I got out I vowed to keep my nose clean, and here I sit at 57 yrs old and 33 yrs later...old, out of shape, and free; both inwardly and outwardly. Again, thanks guys for sharing with your YT family. Bless!

Shawshank and The Green Mile (1999) are movies always recommended when either one is watched first, because both are Stephen King stories directed by Frank Darabont, and about prison. If you haven't seen Green Mile, it's an awesome story and you'll like it as well. It stars Tom Hanks and some actors you're likely familiar with.
Agreed, The Green Mile is one of those movies that everyone should watch at least once in their life. After you see it though, you might not want to watch it again because of its emotional rollercoaster ride.

Stands By Me is almost just as epic. Stephen King's range as a storyteller and writer is something to behold
Great reaction to The Shawshank Redemption. One of the greatest of films ever. Legend has it that Stephen King gave Frank Darabont an option on the story for 1$, which in hindsight now seems like a smart move.
Also one more vote for The Green Mile. If Toni cried twice during TSR, she's going to need K boxes galore for The Green Mile.
Another iconic film that doesn't get reacted to as often as it should, is Kevin Costner's directorial debut, multi Oscar winner, Dances With Wolves. Theatrical cut. Personally I would never recommend an extended cut of anything for a first viewing.

But seriously, I suggested the OTR (original theatrical release) of Dances and they will likely do it soon. I totally agree with you that anyone watching all these great movies should do the OTRs first, since all these "extended versions" and "Director's cuts" seem to drag movies down, making them _not_ as impressive as the originals.
I watched a different first-time reactor pair do the Close Encounters Of The Third Kind director's cut version and they were actually creeped out and had a negative vibe by that version. A totally different reaction than others doing the more positive OTR of Close Encounters.
I guess I better go buy another box of those K-tissues now, just in case they do Dances and Toni starts her waterworks since she gets me balling too! ✌😁

(Side note, I grew up in New England. You know if a rock doesn't belong. Heavily carved by the Wisconsin glaciation, or the last major ice age. Igneous (volcanic) rock is pretty much non-existent on the surface.)

It’s about Red’s redemption, that’s what the title makes reference to, and that’s why he is the narrator. Andy didn’t need redemption, he was innocent all along and punished for a crime he didn’t commit. Red wouldn’t allow himself to be hopeful until Andy showed him he too deserved a second chance in life.
Red’s words throughout the movie are “Hope is a dangerous thing”, and his final words in it (also the last words in the movie) are “I hope.”

Great reaction to a great movie. Glad to see you'll be doing The Green Mile too, as that's equally as great. You should also consider adding The Mist to your list. It's the third Frank Darabont movie based on a Stephen King story, but it's very different from the other two.

When I first saw this, I thought that the story was about a phycological, internal fight many of us have and perhaps they built a story around it! Many times, I felt like Andy and Red both. Remember their talk when Andy talked about his dream of Mexico and Red telling him how those thoughts of the unattainable were dangerous. There is a part of me that wanted to be adventurous and take risks and another side wanted to be careful and stay where I was at for safety. This has been a recurring theme in my life.
I completely agree! I know there have been so many times where I've taken the "safe" option. 🙂
@@popculturallychallenged I really love the movie. The correlation I am trying to draw goes farther. Look at the other differences between Andy and Red. Andy does or tries to do what he perceives as "right" with little regard for ill consequences while Red most often, is thoughtful of outcomes and chooses to look the other way alleviating trouble for himself. Those moral conflicts were in my head always through life...get in the middle of something we see as wrong or look the other way, it isn't any of my business! I see this as a possible story of me...I am both Red and Andy or more accurately, Andy and Red are both alive in me! All the rest just represents the difficult life out there we all face. Maybe it is being Gemini that makes me see it this way?

In the original story, it was 26 years, not 19, and Andy escaped in the mid 1970s. He went through a succession of wardens, but the last one was the evil corrupt one. I forget how Red figured it out, but he calculated that Andy had his escape tunnel ready several years before he made his break and Red ponders as to why he waited before concluding that Andy had become institutionalized himself and just couldn't bring himself to go. What finally made him go was learning that the prison's sewer was scheduled to be hooked up to the local municipal sewer system and would then go through a pump, which of course he would not be able to crawl through, so it was now or never.
Oh wow! I may need to go read the book at some point. Sounds a lot different from the movie!

FYI, in the novella that the story came from ("Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption") the character of "Red" was actually a red haired Irishman, so when Morgan Freeman said "maybe it's because I'm Irish" it was kind of a nod to the book.

I was told that in the book, when they expanded the library, they found a set of blueprints for the prison, and that is how Andy knew where the sewer line went.
That would make sense. I may need to read the book at some point!

Yes it was a real prison. Actually it was set to be demolished and was saved by this movie. Another cool fact is the room where Brooks took his life was filmed inside the prison as well.
I was there a few years ago, there were still albums strewn all over the library.
That castle style of prison was not uncommon in the 1800s. Stateville Prison in my hometown of Joliet, IL, is similar, constructed out of Joliet limestone dug from a nearby quarry.

Fun Fact: Raquel Welch, whose One Million Years B.C. (1966) poster plays a significant role in the film, is a big fan of this movie.
Musical Enthusiast Fact: The opera song that Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) plays over the loud speakers is "Canzonetta sull'aria" from "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. It was Tim Robbins' idea for Andy to turn up the volume of the record player in the scene.
Bird Timing Fact: When Andy goes to the library to begin work as Brooks' assistant and Brooks' crow, Jake, is squawking, Tim Robbins had to time his line so that the crow wouldn't squawk over him, since the bird could not be trained to squawk on cue. Robbins was able to time his line perfectly by learning the bird's squawking patterns, for which writer/director Frank Darabont praised him.
"The Marriage of Figaro " is a beautiful opera and one of my favorites.
I read most of the Stephen King novelas and novels before they were adapted to film.

Another good reaction. To me, this movie was about hope ... and just as much about Red as it was about Andy.
- As Red goes through each parole hearing you can see him losing hope.
- During the scene where Andy gets out of isolation (from playing the music to the entire prison) and tells Red about "hope", Red tells Andy that "hope is a dangerous thing."
Then comes the wonderful line from Red as he's riding the bus ... "I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope."
That's so cool! I didn't realize how many times Red used the word hope at the end! It makes it that much more impactful! 🙂
In the book, that was the last scene. Reportedly, King liked Darabont's ending better here, as well as Darabont's ending in The Mist.
Some observations When Brooks leaves, the view of the camera is form the outside looking into the prison. Symbolic he left physically but not mentally, when Red leaves the view is from inside looking out! (He left) Also notice what book of the Bible the hammer was kept in? Exodus. Also when Red is Talking to Andy about him going to Mexico he says "these are just shitty pipe dreams"...

Good Evening. Although set in Maine, the prison used was the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. The large main building and Cell Block 1 are now a Museum. They offer tours, can be used for special occasions, and offer overnight cell accommodations for the brave. ( haunted ) The street scenes were primarily N. Main St where the shop owners agreed to have their stores redone to fit the time period. Many still look the same. The halfway house is the Bis sman Building, and still looks the same today. The store was the E and B Market on 4th Street which has been torn down. I was fortunate to be an extra con in the yard scenes. The premiere was held at Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre, a restored 1929 movie palace, before New York and Los Angeles.. I also volunteered working the restoration. The prison was also used in the movie "Tango & Cash", and was the Russian cell block in "Airforce One". An interesting side note: In the bad winters, crows from 7 or 8 counties move into Mansfield by the hundreds due to large granaries between town and the prison. Brook's crow was a natural. I am 75 now with Parkinson's and don't get to attend movies. I enjoy the reaction videos on TH-cam.

I’m from Columbus Ohio.
If you’re ever in Mansfield Ohio…an hour north of Columbus you can visit the actual prison “Ohio State Reformatory” where a lot of the movie was filmed.
The prison dates back to the 1800’s and there is stuff from the film in the prison that you can see when you tour the prison.
It’s also supposedly haunted and they have “ghost tours” at Halloween.
You can also see filming locations around Mansfield.

It's crazy how right after Brook's dies that they bring us right back up with the library news. Such a roller coaster ride!.... I heard somebody comment before that the Opera Andy played had to do with a cheating spouse.

You should watch the different interviews with Tim Robbins (Andy), Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton (Warden Norton), Clancy Brown (guard Byron Hadley), James Whitmore (Brooks), Mark Rolston (Bogs) and Gil Bellows (Tommy), they’re very interesting.
Gunton was a stage actor and hadn’t been in many movies so it took some doing to even get him the audition; at the time he was shooting Demolition Man with Sylvester Stallone for which he had to shave his head so he auditioned completely bald, it went well but then they wanted to screen-test him so the studio got a “very expensive” wig and flew him to NY where he read his lines with Tim Robbins. He actually did the first part of the movie wearing the wig, which I must admit was worth every penny because I always thought it was his real hair combed back like they did in the 50’s, then by the time they had to shoot scenes in the 60’s his real hair had grown out and was naturally gray and like a crew cut which was the cop look of the 60’s so it looked perfect for the effect they wanted.
Rolston (Bogs) said they rehearsed the movie like a play, instead of just reading the lines at the table reading with the other actors and then rehearsing the scenes prior to shooting them, they rehearsed all the scenes for weeks first, so by the time the shooting started they were all very familiar with their characters and knew exactly what they were doing.
When Andy first arrives at Shawshank there’s a young black man teasing them doing the fish-rolling motion with his hands while everyone chants “fresh fish”, that’s Morgan Freeman’s son Alfonso who is also young Red’s face in the mug shot in Red’s folder.
Director Frank Darabont also directed The Green Mile and cast a few actors in both movies; William Sadler (Heywood) is the father of the girls, Jeffrey DeMunn (the prosecutor in Andy’s trial) is Harry the mile guard, and Brian Libby (Floyd, the guy who tells Andy and Red that Brooks is attacking Heywood) is the sheriff who arrests John Coffey.

A piece of trivia about this movie … they actor who plays Captain Hadley (the main guard) is played by Clancy Brown … He’s also the voice of Mr. Krabbs on SpongeBob.

11:02 allegedly, this scene would not even have been included in the film because the beer drinking was recorded during a break in the filming, because the director liked the way the actors drank beer during the break in the filming, so it was included in the film, and the prison where the film takes place is still a prison only where the part where the film was made is not working, it can still be visited today (if true) rambo 1 and 4 are good films, the rest are not so good

This was filmed at the Ohio State reformatory. It was a real prison but closed down and now they do tours/ghost hunting.

Trivia: Several real life prison guards offered to meet with Clancy Brown (Hadley) and give him advice on how to play his part to make it more authentic, but Brown turned them down because he was playing an evil character and he didn't want it to reflect negatively on them.
Even though they were playing evil characters, Bob Gunton (The Warden) and Clancy Brown (Hadley) got along very well with the other cast members.
Tom Hanks and James Cromwell were offered the roles of Andy Dufresne and the Warden, respectively. But they both turned them down. They both later appeared in "The Green Mile", another prison movie from Frank Darabont based on a Stephen King novel. Both movies were about a man sent to prison for a brutal murder, who later turned out to be innocent.
Jeffrey DeMunn (The prosecuting attorney at the beginning of the movie) and William Sadler (Haywood) both appeared in "The Green Mile". John Horton (The judge who sentenced Andy) appeared in "Thinner", another movie based on a Stephen King novel.

Toni caught something right away that nagged at me a bit, watching the movie: The sewer pipe. It should not have erupted under pressure in the first place, flowing under gravity to the outside ditch (dramatic/gross-out effect). But after it did, the **** would have remained pooled in the pipe. And Hopefully, when working detail outside the prison, Andy was able to confirm that there wasn't a metal grate at the far end, or his claustrophobia might become a 'lifetime experience' (!!).
Brooks, of course, was played by the late, great James Whitmore, who passed in 2009 (age 87) after being in another 7 movies after this one !
Good point! That would have been horrible to crawl through 500 yards of sewage only to find the end sealed off with a grate!

South Korean film with subtitles, but you wont even notice the subtitles after a few minutes. one piece of advice...make sure she has a box of tissues close by. You too, as well.

I only just realized this time how lucky Andy had to be, to have a cell at the end of a row where he could tunnel through one wall to find a way out. Because he wasn't on the ground floor, so if his cell was not at the end of a row, he couldn't have tunneled anywhere. Not through a wall or through the floor either.

If end cell on the ground floor maybe he still could have tunneled through the wall: He had to climb Down a fair distance to reach the sewer pipe.
When Andy sent the evidence out in the outgoing mail, it was out towards the news media. If he sent it to the police, they wouldn't have done much of anything and probably kept it silent. The news media was more open out because seeing that kind of evidence of fraud and murder would've gotten the state's attention, which is exactly what happened.

When Red tells Andy that going to Mexico is "shitty pipe dreams", it foreshadows Andy crawling through a pipe of shit to escape.

They filmed the end on the beach at St Croix. I think I read that it was added later because test audiences wanted to know if Red actually made it to Andy and the original ending was on the bus, with the ‘I hope’ line. The photo of Red on the jail form that is stamped is actually Morgan Freeman’s son. I think the only issue with the story is the poster of Raquel Welch on the wall. How does Andy crawl down the tunnel, then put the poster back up on the wall behind him?
One thing most miss is that this is a Stephen King story. Andy ***did*** kill his wife. Origionally the box for Red contained the gun before Andy escaped he replaced the gun with what he left for Red. Andy corrupted the guards and the warden to AID in his escape. Watch it again with that perspective and it becomes a much darker movie.
I may have to check out the book at some point! 😃

This had the same director as The Green Mile, and the same author as The Green Mile, Misery, and Stand by Me. Shawshank was shot at the closed prison outside Mansfield, Ohio.

You folks should have the audio portion of the film content recorded in stereo as most "reaction hosts" do! It's harder to understand the movie dialogue when it's done in mono! Just a suggestion!
Hi, thanks for the comment. We had the audio in stereo but because of several copyright claims against the video, we had to alter the sound to clear the claims. I wish I knew the secret to avoiding the copyright police. 😂

When Brooks got out, the prison was in the background, signifying his life was over. When Red got out, the ‘world’ was in the background, signifying Red’s life was ahead of him.

It was a real prison that they filmed in. It hadn't been used for years. In the book, Jake, the bird returns to the prison.
