  • In my book How Not to Die, I center my recommendations around a Daily Dozen checklist of all the things I try to fit into my daily routine.
    Normally we just show you the science from the primary sources in the peer-reviewed medical literature, but I want NutritionFacts.org to be more than just a reference site. I want it to be a practical guide on translating this mountain of data into day-to-day decisions. So, that’s where my Daily Dozen slips into the mix. It’s available for free on Apple App Store (itunes.apple.com/us/app/dr.-g...) as well as an Android app (play.google.com/store/apps/de..., thanks to an amazing group of volunteers through our Open Source Initiative (nutritionfacts.org/open-source/).

    LOL every time I think "what else can I add to make this healthier", I end up eating too much. Seriously, being on a WFPB diet has led to a consistent weight loss of about a 1lb. per month. Doesn't sound like much but over two years it's been significant. My BMI is finally below the overweight category. As I alluded to in the first line, I'm never hungry because there's literally too many things to eat. Thank you Dr. Greger for interpreting all the science. Taking care of my body, caring for the Earth and caring for all other sentient beings by not eating them. Metta to you.

Legumes and whole grains should not be "taken away" from the diet, we should be eating them every day. It is a very nice point. Some of us have absolutely massive metabolisms and don't get the luxury of wasting stomach space on low calorie lettuces, so I tend to get what I need and go for much more substantial vegetables like kale, broccoli, and (when the opportunity presents around family) squashes. Fortunately I don't have to eat 9500/day anymore (my poor parents...that was in 2008 too), but I still do probably 3500

    My major problem with this lifestyle is finding time! By the time I exercise 60 minutes, cut up a bunch of stuff each day, concoct dishes to eat, drink the required water (which by the way you should not do while eating "they" say) and do some meditation and stretching I have very little time to actually work the 8 hours a day I am suppose to give to my employer! And if it snows or my wife needs help with things or there is cleaning to do, it is impossible to fit all this in. As well, I also do intermittent fasting (which I highly recommend for optimum health). So I only have 8 hours a day to eat all these items. I feel like I am stuffing myself to get it all in, which cant be healthy. Ugh, kind if stressful.

    • @pda2836
      @pda2836 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Try reducing your portions. The serving sizes are relatively small if you measure. I always cook too much and put what I think are "normal" portions on my plate -- too much food. If you measure for a while, it may help you to not feel so stuffed. As for everything else, have you heard that great saying, Progress not Perfection. Do the best you can and think of how much has changed in your life for the better. 🙂 Good Luck!!

    The best way to eat flax is to mix 1:3 flax meal with water and add your favorite spices to that and then add that to food. The flax "egg" really makes food creamy and delicious and isn't the obvious way to just put the flax powder over food.

    • @phill6983
      @phill6983 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why on earth would you want to eat flax?

    • @oscaruglyface
      @oscaruglyface 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phill6983 Because it makes food creamy. If you add cinnamon to the flax and add water it coats your food nicely and makes it taste like cinnamon cookies. Flax is good for you.

    • @phill6983
      @phill6983 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oscaruglyface Why do you think flax is good for you?
      Just some information for you:
      Flaxseeds contain anti-nutrients that may have adverse influence on the health and well-being of human population. Cyanogenic glycosides are the major anti-nutrients and are fractionated into linustatin (213-352 mg/100 g), neolinustatin (91-203 mg/100 g), linmarin (32 mg/100 g). (Credit ncbi)
      Similar to other seeds, flax seeds contain phytic acid. Phytic acid is often referred to as an antinutrient, as it may reduce the absorption of minerals like iron and zinc (85). Still, phytic acid doesn't cause any lasting reduction in mineral absorption and does not affect any subsequent meals. (Credit health line)
      Why would you want to eat something with those anti nutrients in it? You don't need the fibre as humans can't digest fibre and we don't need it. The omega 3 that flax contains is in the form of ALA which is not a form that humans can use. We need EPA or DHA. We can use ALA as a precursor but we can only convert a tiny amount of it into a useable form.
      Flax seed has enough negatives to show that it is not a healthy food for humans. I'd like to see any information that you can supply that proves otherwise.

    Great to hear from Dr Greger - I recently heard Dr Joel Fuhrman having a podcast discussion with Dr Gundry (who I'm suspect about) and hated the elephant in the room that they were selectively choosing to mention things they agree upon when their recommendations are starkly different.

    Would this checklist be different between for women, since we tend to be smaller?

  • @YD-uq5fi
    @YD-uq5fi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem with this is the word 'daily'.
    It is better to multiply the checklist by 3 and try and hit everything in 72 hours. This lines up better with the cadence of shopping, cooking, etc. Some days might be over on legumes and under on fruits, but other days may be the reverse. That way everything is hit over 72 hours. But keeping the checklist 'daily' is too much to keep track of and doesn't tie up well with optimal cooking and shopping routines.

Soy, for example, is number 2 on the list of top contributors to deforestation and habitat destruction. A lot of blue zones are vegetarian from the quick Google search I've just done. But in any event. It's not about who lives the longest. Its also about quality of life. There are many different factors.
      It's up to you what you think is healthy. But this is the only diet to reverse heart disease.
      You know most of the soy grown is fed to farmed animals. About 80% of it!. Soy isn't the problem in a plant based world.
      Hunting or rearing your own is not sustainable. There is not enough room on the planet. So that doesn't work.
      What do you suggest for the people who haven't got a garden or a big enough space to grow their own for all their nutrient requirements.

A lot of articles will say nonsense like they are " mostly " plant based, which is to say they eat fish and meat. All these people are very healthy, which is why they live that long. The Inuit eat mostly high fat and meat and they have some of the lowest incidence of heart disease on the planet. People are going carnivore all over the world with incredible results, and they are reversing a lot more than just heart disease. Hunting and raising meat is extremely sustainable, there is an overabundance of space on this planet. Having no space is absolute nonsense pushed by people who's only solution is to kill off more human beings through abortion, contraception, and euthanasia. That's the anti human culture of death talking. There are a lot of animals that can be raised with minimal space like chickens and meat rabbits. Even milk goats and mini Jerseys can be raised with very modest amounts of land. I'm all for fruits and vegetables, but saying these don't occupy space is beyond detached from reality. Soy is certainly fed to cattle, regretfully, bit it's also in all the fake meat products vegetarians and vegans love. They are just willing to look the other way just so they can have fake meat. It strikes me as hilarious that even when vegans say eating meat is bad for you or even morally reprehensible they make their food look and taste like it. The truth is that we have to find, at an individual level, what is good or bad food for us. There are some people who would be killed by a plant based diet for many different reasons. Animal products are absolutely a part of a healthy diet, its all a matter of proportion. Incorporating fasting is also essential.

      I have not said plants don't take up any room. But, raising animals takes up loads of space. This includes growing all the food the animals need. Which is where the room is taken. Anyone can cruelly cram 100s, 1000s of animals together. But they need food!. That's why the Amazon is being destroyed. Along with other places. It takes a vast amount of space to grow food for these animals. Not everyone can do this, by a long shot. Impossible. Wouldn't work. Work it out. People on planet. All hunting their own. Raising their own. Its absolutely impossible.
      Soy. Over 80% is fed to animals. 20 or 80% what's worse. Its 80%. Soy doesn't just get used in vegetarians food. Its used in non vegetarian food too. It's in real meat sausages, burgers and so on. Check! Non vegetarians also eat fake meat products. Dont lay the soy problem with vegetarians. 20% or 80% . Who is making the right choice. Not 80% that's for sure.
      The reason fake meat tastes and looks like real meat is because most vegetarians like the taste of meat. They don't eat it because they don't like animal cruelty or they want to save the planet. But they miss it and they like it. So this helps them on their journey.
