Oh, without a doubt this was a fantastic trailer if you don't focus on the reality of Rick most likely dying. Angela Kang seems to be a promising show runner and she should have replaced Gimple before seasons 7 and 8 happened. And now that they seem to be doing the Whisperer's storyline, which was CARL'S, I can't help but be somewhat bitter about it. If they'd have gone along with the comics, he would've been the one talking to Negan in that cell and would've had moments where he also goes against the formula of accepting the Saviors, plus other things. That zombie in Rick's face definitely made me think that is going to be the moment, unless Rick is taken out by a herd. No matter what, I feel the same as you. I don't feel excited for the season and am only watching it until Rick's final episode.
I think they have a new showrunner this season so I expect the characters and plot to be handled a little bit different and if it means an improvement from Season 8 then I welcome it.

It just sounds so weird like after all those 2 have been through from the Farm to the Prison to Terminus to Alexandria that anything would drive them to kill each other in my opinion. However if Rick is too die by any person in the show and not walkers then id like for it to be Maggie in that scenario. I dont know if it would be hand to hand combat since Rick should beat Maggie in that situation but then again Michonne beat the Governor and Rick couldnt so who knows who they're gonna do it.
I kinda saw a "Shane takes Rick out to the woods to kill him" scenario here with Darryl. That scene where they're both on the bike riding somewhere probably in the middle of nowhere. If Darryl kills Rick that's it for me. That is the worst betrayal ever. Especially for a character like Darryl who has been nothing but annoying the last season. If Rick is gonna die let it be at least by someone's unexpected hands or someone worthy of taking him out. I'm not gonna like it as I also agree Rick is one of the best TV characters ever. Top 5 at least. This is gonna be a sad season and I hope they just end it here because I honestly believe this show wont survive much longer without good ol Rick Grimes. :(
