Hi...he is my 12th GG. If you watch REIGN on Netflix it tells the story of Mary Queen of Scots and James is in it. I don't know how historically accurate it is, but it does give you an idea !

    • @earlofmar7987
      @earlofmar7987 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's not accurate. Taken me a while to understand. James Stuart, Mary's half brother, is the son of Margaret Erskine and King James V. She was beautiful. She is the daughter of John Erskine 5th Lord of Mar, of Stirling Castle. Margaret later marries a Douglas. And the Douglas family rides against Mary Queen of Scot's with James Stuart, Lord of Moray. You and I are related through Margaret Erskine. John Erskine would be my 12th Great Grandfather.

Thanks! I just traced myself back to him too thru a few lines (yesterday). Gets sticky with all that inter family marrying, *cough. Weird tidbit from what I understand, Margaret Tudor married multiple times. After having James the 5th, she also had 2 other children by 2 different husbands; half siblings. Those two married and had Lord Darnley who later married his 1st cousin Mary Queen of Scots which produced King James VI and I. I may not be completely correct, so feel free to correct me if I am wrong, haha.

0:45 James V was king of Scotland, not England. However, he was closely connected to two kings of England. His maternal grandfather was King Henry VII of England (father of the famous Henry VIII), and his grandson King James VI of Scotland later became James I of England after Queen Elizabeth I died childless.

1:45 Just wanted to mention "Moray" is actually pronounced like the name "Murray". I've heard the rule for British aristocracy is that the more famous someone is, the more likely it is that their name is not pronounced as it's spelled. :)

First monarchs of house of moray: The House of Moray or Clann Ruaidrí[1][a] is a historiographical and genealogical construct to illustrate the succession of rulers whose base was in Moray and who ruled sometimes a larger kingdom. An important feature of Scottish politics throughout the 11th century, they reached the height of their power with the reign of Macbeth between 1040 and 1057.[2]
Clann Ruaidrí first appears in the documentary record in 1020 with the killing of Findláech mac Ruaidrí by his nephews, the sons of Máel Brigte.[3] Findláech's death is recorded in both the Annals of Tigernach, where he is described as Mormaer of Moray, and the Annals of Ulster, where he is described as King of Alba.[3]
Clann Ruaidri has been claimed to have been descended in the male line from the Cenél Loairn, one of the ruling kindreds of Gaelic Dál Riata, based on a genealogy of Máel Snechtai reproduced in four Irish manuscripts.[4] This genealogy has now been shown to be a clear and chronologically impossible fabrication made in the 11th or 12th centuries, constructed by joining three existing genealogies together.[5][6][7][8] The pedigree lists only one further name beyond the ancestors of Máel Snechtai already identifiable from annalistic sources - that of Domnall, the father of Ruaidrí, who was the father of Findláech of Moray.[4] The immediate ancestor of Domnall is given as Mongán mac Domnaill, who in fact died c. 700, over three centuries before the death of Findláech in 1020.[7]
At the times when the rival house held the throne, the Moray leaders usually had their effectively independent state of Moray, where a succession of kings (kinglets) or mormaers ruled.
The succession followed quite loyally the rules of tanistry, resulting in practice to outcomes where branches of the leaders' extended family rotated on the rulership, possibly keeping a balance between important branches. This is quite typical for tribal societies, where primogeniture is much less usual than agnatic seniority or turns on the throne. For example, Macbeth, King of Scotland descended from one branch, and his stepson Lulach from another. Started in 700 long before Macbeth or Stewart’s or any of it lol but anyways Stewart’s ruled the longest 9 monarchs 7 kings 2 queens probably why they are brought up more. James of moray was my 13th great grandfather but my line goes all the way up through the kings that I know of up to Walter Stewart in the 1200s before that Robert the Bruce who is my 23rd great grandfather his daughter Majorie married Walter Stewart therefore making the Stewart’s kings. But going down the line of succession it ended with the earl of moray as his mother was Margaret erskine a mistress to king James v my 14th great grandfather otherwise all my grandparents go all the way up to the 1200s so far. It has been very interesting.

robert the II of Scotland is my 23 great grandfather on my mother's Campbell family ancestry tracing from judge david campbell
james 1 of scotland is my 17 great grandfather, maybe we are distant relations from the Scottish Stewart line!!
I am descendant of a few queens and kings from my 16 great grandmother campbell (stewart) !! WOW
my mother is a moore (maiden name) and I am a harris, and my many times great grandmother penelope campbell
is where my (mother's most recent) campbell line starts, and my 16 great grandmother stewart is where my stewart / steward
    line starts
so I maay be a distant cousin of some "stuart" royals and other royals!!
robert the II is the 9th great grandfather of George III of England, and 15th great grandfather of Elizabeth II of England

Cool! From reseach on Ancestry.com and the internet, I've found that my maternal grandfathers family is descended from the earls of Moray and the McCraken( MacNaughton) clan. We've traced our tree all the way to Margaret Tudor. Maybe we're related?

Earl of Moray's mother was Margaret Erskine. She was King James V, of Scotland's favorite mistress. She was the daughter of the Earl of Mar. John Erskine 5th, Earl of Mar. Later, Margaret married a Douglas. The Douglas's and the James Stuart, Earl of Moray, went against and fought against Mary Queen of Scot's. You should look at the beautiful paintings of Margaret. She was a beauty. No other compared to her.

Lol according to who or what because my tree goes all the way to my 15th great grandfather who was James iv iron belt Stewart king of Scots…and according to mine his mother was madeleine of Valois and her parents were Francis i of France and Claude of France and they were all my 15th great grandparents. Madeleine died at 17 but apparently did have children according to mine it says madeleines son was first earl of moray while he did have a son with who you speak of he was second earl and if he was even with her before I have no idea but madeleine died when she was 17.

@@wiscochic861plutochic5 I don't think we are talking about the same line. You've gone back to King James 4th. But this is very interesting. It would diffidently seal the Auld Alliance. But a quick search says, that Margaret of Denmark was King James 4th, mother. She was Roman Catholic. So, that would go along with that time period. But, I'll definitely study the information that you have posted.

@@wiscochic861plutochic5 The Margaret I am talking about, was Margaret Erskine. She was the Earl of Mar's daughter. King James 5th, would have fallen in love with her, before he married the two Valois sisters. He and Margaret had two children. One, becoming the Earl of Morey. The first Valois sister, did not live very long. She had respiratory problems. But said she wanted to be a queen, before she died. Then he married Mary DeGuisse, the next Valois sister. They had two boys. Both died very young. Speculation's, that they were poisoned. Their last child was Mary. She was born Roman Catholic. King James 5th, died 3 days after Mary was born. Crowning Mary, Queen of Scots. The Earl of Mar, took her to marry the young Dauphin of France, around age 5 to 8 years old. He knew, she would be raised Catholic. They married around 16 years old. But he died soon after. While she is in France, her mother, my 15th great grandfather Earl of Mar and the Earl of Moray, are Regents of Scotland. Mary DeGuisse dies just before Mary arrives back to Scotland.

It is my understanding that the first monarch of the House of Moray was MacBeth, mormaer of Moray, son of Finlech MacRory, Mormaer of Moray and Donada, the daughter of Malcolm II, who married Gruoch, the granddaughter of Kenneth III. MacBeth defeated Duncan I in battle at Elgin and ruled Scotland for seventeen years. I am related through my great great grandfather, of the Finley Clan.

Mary Queen of Scot's restored Earl of Mar peerage back to my family that had been Earl's of that property since The Pic's. This is the land around Stirling Castle and the town of Erskine. John Erskine was the 5th Earl of Mar and he had a daughter named Margaret. She was King James V, mistress. He had a lot of lovers but she was his favorite and wanted to marry her. She later marries a Douglass. I've discovered entire plays and books written about her. She was stunning to look at. www.geni.com/people/Margaret-Erskine/6000000012963636521
