Oh wow, I have just recently returned to crochet. I taught myself crochet in high school in the 60s. By the 70s I was tired of granny square and the clothes patterns then didn't please me. So learned to knit. I did do some doilies in the 80s. Injuries forced me into quilting in the 80s. Then I started just learning any needlework and beading. I was able to return to knitting with Portuguese style. I have become fascinated with dolls and toys. I am doing my first amigurumi toy. But I am seeing crochet clothes now that I would wear. And boom this video popped in my feed yesterday. So I thought I would watch. I am thrilled with what you are presenting. I have way too many minis. As I watched I saw Tunisian. I dabbled in that a few years ago. Anymore I do small projects only. I switch crafts, well more rotate them to reduce pain from various injuries and arthritis. I am also getting better from stage 4 cancer. So small projects have a better chance of getting done. You are helping me take a new look at the crochet world! I am thrilled and excited at age 74.

One of the things that made me a TL Yarn Crafts fan is how smoothly and seemingly effortlessly you explain things without pauses you use a lot of eloquent descriptions and seem to have a very quick mind for describing things the way you talk is like a scripted advertisement but it can't possibly be scripted because you do it so well for every single video that I've seen whether it's crochet unboxing review videos or explaining Yarns you like or color palettes or patterns all of it you just immediately say things and you can tell it's not scripted but yet it sounds like someone has worked on an advertisement and giving you the perfect words to say you have a way with words and it's so unique so I too love listening to you explain things

I've made amigurumi for years, and it generates a HUGE quantity of scraps.
And being "slightly" OCD, I've always weighted and labeled my scraps.
And then sorted them by category and color. 😅
So I've never bought specifically a mini, but basically I got an endless stash of "DIY minis" that I've used in pretty much every kind of stashbusting project over my 30+ years (I'm 43 and I've started as a kid) of crocheting...
Just like Toni, when using my "minis" I too love to focus either on new techniques or the construction of "daring" palettes.
My favorite projects are pet blankets, that I usually donate to the shelter where I got my Astro (the cutie in profile pic) ❤
For craft fairs I also love to make bags, pouches (for makeup or coins), hats and gloves/mittens: they are eye-catching and rather low cost, so they usually sell well 😊

Hi Toni 🙋🏻‍♀️ I never find mini skeins in the UK. Discovered them with your channel, how I love them! I was thinking I might make a spiral Christmas table cloth with a mini-skein advent calendar or Christmas baubles. It may not be the best way to show them off but to be honest, I don't really want a new scarf, shawl or blanket so I end up a little stuck with ideas. I so love the patterns you show here, and a big thank you promoting the free patterns too 🙏🏻 It helps balance out the budget between them and expensive patterns.

I can confirm, watching your Rhinebeck sweater vid lit a fire under me to try a sweater. I'm half way through my first Ragland now and I'm loving it. Toni I love mini ‘s and the Catona is my favorite cotton period! I love using my mini’s for home decor items and right now I am making Christmas ornaments, and granny squares. Thanks to this video I have my eye on a couple of projects. I have to make the color theory wrap because or a like and don’t like. I am not thrilled with the yarn but I love her wrap, so since I already have the minis I will for sure make the wrap. I have the same Catona box you you have and it’s a fab! Thank you and keep this type of videos coming.

I love using lighter weights for Barbie or doll clothing and accessories. One of these day I will get some hand dyed yarn, that is the only item on my bucket list, lol. I only recently learned that there are actually different yarn for crocheting and knitting that are wrapped differently, who knew! Very excited to watch your Biz Playlist. 😊👍

Hi Toni. I actually bought a set of acrylic mini skeins years ago when AC Moore was still in business. There were 30 or 36 skeins in the bag. I believe they were a Stitch Studio brand. I made a cardigan with it. It’s one of my favourite cardigans. The yarns were a thick 4 weight, plush and soft - 6 of each color: pink, blue, lavender, white, orange and … maybe it was just 30 mini skeins.

I have a huge king size blanket project for just myself that is inspired by the Roseanne couch granny square afghan. I have a buttload of a dark heather gray wool that I scored on sale forever ago, and I buy mini skeins of yarns that are just too much outside of my budget to buy in larger amounts, or little travel souvenir skeins, or just skeins that I wouldn't know what else to do with. It's going to take me a long time to create it... but it's all just for me, it's easy to pick up a few squares, not overwhelming to take care of the tails as I go, and can throw in a bag at a moments notice if I want something to work on while I have just a few minutes.

And the first Advent pack I ever bought from Madeline Tosh, I used to make your Adventurous Scarf! No lie! It came out really cute and I get compliments on it all the time. Great shout out to knotbadbritt. I also think her designs are gorgeous! Great video Toni. I thought I knew what you would pick but I found some great surprises! I have shied away from mini skeins a bit because they can end up costing more than the whole skeins when you add up the yardage but I LOVE the idea and use of them.

    • @dougphilips8807
      @dougphilips8807 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can always make your own minis from larger skeins of more economical yarn, just wind off 20g balls (or go by yardage if you don't have a scale, an 18" long piece of cardboard gives you 1.5yds per complete wrap (but you do have to count)...

Have to say, it never occurred to me to buy mini-skeins, but now, I'm inspired to give them a try. I've always cobbled's together leftover yarns into granny squares, adding them to a blankets or other patch-work-type projects. I love the unexpected combos of colors, textures and weights. Having a curated, multicolor set of the same yarn would be a total game-changer. Plus the pattern in would keep me from analysis paralysis! I know me. I would have those minis for YEARS before committing to a project!!! 😊Thanks for sharing!

i really like the color palate of your last shawl/scarf. you did a lovely job fading. I lean toward hats and socks: smaller projects that finish up faster. (Mittens and leggings would work, too.) I note a trend here toward 'in the round' but there are also flat patterns out there.

Love these pattern round ups, as it introduces me to new crochet artists. For mini skeins, I love making Mosaic Stars, pattern by Tinna Thorudottir Thorvaldar. I have LionBrand Bon Bons in cotton, that are especially good for this pattern.

Thank you for mentioning all these pattern ideas and Jems Luxe Monstrous Minis. I just discovered them at Indie Untangled and I am hooked! I love bulky and chunky yarns. I subscribed to their monthly minis club...LOL I have never used minis in crochet projects but have used them in knitting. Looking forward to trying it out.

I enjoyed your pattern round up. You have so much knowledge about designs and designers and I appreciate hearing you share what you know. Mini skeins - I participated in a crochet-along. A lot of lacy squares, being very careful with tension and usage. I learned a lot. Also, I live in the Netherlands and have become a Scheepjes fan (and yes that sch -> sk trips me up all the time). I used a Scheepjes Softfun mini colour pack in the pastels to make rows of puff tulip flowers for a blanket and I love it. On a side note, I have your book waiting for me with family and I'll finally get it into my hands in a few days! I'm so excited! Thanks for the knowledge drop today and in your book - now I gotta go thru all the tabs I opened from your suggestions! 😄

Meanwhile me: The other day I bought on sale over 20 skeins of a velvet plus yarn for a nice small blanket, thinking they were 50grs each like the small velvets from the same brand. Turned out they were 200 grs each so now I'll have a quilt sized blanket. At least my cats will love it

I'm using minis for a crocheted Battenburg blanket and a granny stripe blanket, after I knit socks with them. But you have really opened the door to some planned and gorgeous garments Toni. Thank you.

I'm so glad you did this video. I've gotten quite a few mini skeins over the years and they're just sitting there right now looking pretty. I have such a hard time finding crochet patterns that work well with variegated yarns. Knit up they look stunning but a lot of times with crochet I find that the patterns will kinda disappear behind the chaos.

The adventurous scarf video was how I found your channel - totally obsessed, and just HAD to learn tunisian so I could make it. It's my favorite scarf ever! Can't wait to make the rancher shawl. Right now I'm almost finished with the Cadenza shawl - another pattern I've been obsessed with but couldn't quite find the colors to make it work, until I saw the original camp color range was on sale! Now that I'm thinking about it- I think the Cadenza would really work with mini-skeins, just keeping the MC as some solid that ties it all together. Would love to see someone do it!

I've been doing a scrappy crochet blanket with mini's and some leftover fingering weight yarn. I had gotten a summer solstice advent for my birthday this year and just seeing the fade come through was gorgeous and prompted me to get a halloween set too :D You're absolutely right that the joy of bringing in the next color pushes you to keep going, even on a simple stitch. Now I'm just hoping for mini skeins for christmas
