About the pink paste: I believe this quest was actually based off of the Quaker Oats lawsuit, a lawsuit that took place in Massachusetts. Specifically, MIT and Quaker Oats fed 100(ish) children at Fernald School in Waltham radioactive cereal to prove nutrients in Quaker Oats traveled through the body (or something like that). The children were not informed and in 1998 the lawsuit against MIT and Quaker Oats was settled for 1.85 million dollars. The experiment itself took place in the 40s and 50s. All of this to say, I think pink paste is a reference to the radioactive oats experiment.

This method of putting a radioactive isotope inside of food or other things was actually rather wide spread for experiments in the 40s and 50s even up until the 70s

@@leggonarm9835 I know the game is a bug-ridden mess but that's weird, I mostly had problems with other addons like Dead Money. If you play on pc, try installing mods like: NVAC (New Vegas Anti Crash), Yukichigai Unofficial Patch (YUP), and lStewieAl's Tweaks and Engine Fixes. Those worked wonders on my case

Fair enough, but it wasn't technically a teleporter/relay in and of itself. It was a signal interceptor which allowed the Sole Survivor to piggyback the next time the Institute used the actual relay.

Arthur Maxon is an odd character in general. He's supposed to be 20 in Fallout 4 but he looks like a grizzled war vet. You could argue that war and stress ages you harder but he looks 10 years older than he's supposed to be.
I also never understood why the Capital Wasteland brotherhood had Maxon with them seeing as he's basically royalty and the CW group was just a small offshoot of the main brotherhood.
Since the Lyon's are essentially royalty, if any of them wanted to do something that seemed appealing to everyone else, the other elders would have likely approved, going to DC,the "precious capital of the nation" seems logical, for it was almost assured they would find some bonkers technology there.
I don’t know if it’s what the writers intended, but maybe it’s to keep him safe from the NCR-BOS War?

@@ineptitude potentially, the game guide only goes as far to tell us that his mother sent him with Lyons after the death of his father outside NCR territory but mostly because he’s timid. Seems fairly likely.
It could be something inspired by Alexander the Great and his rise to power, since he was also very young when it happened. Even their ages match since both Alexander and Arthur took power at 16 years old.

You’re right, unless the SS died in the vault and the institute replaced their body in the freeze chamber with a synth one, refroze it, then allowed it to wake up (which would be pretty far fetched) then I agree SS could not be a synth.

Yea, the whole Sole Survivor being a synth doesn't hold up. Shaun is always a combo of Nate and Nora, you remember a lot about Pre-war that we as the player don't see but the Survivor talks about, and the fact it all started because of Dima, who is shown to be dishonest, manipulative, and willing to make people believe they are synths when they are not.
I think oxhorn talked about it somewhere where he said that the brotherhood just completely glosses over the feats that Sarah Lyons and Elder Lyons did in that capital wasteland. They Defeated the Enclave, took out their other base, brought fresh water to the wasteland and are always fighting muties. For them to just gloss over that stuff was extremely wild.
It might be because helping others is not only not in three Brotherhood's Codex, it is explicitly prohibited in the Codex. Their core implores them to be extremely isolationist. So the actions of a Chapter helping the Wasteland at large are probably controversial.
Yeah, and he also got mad about BETHESDA reusing assets in a game developed by OBSIDIAN, while he had a texture mod installed.

I always wished Sarah was the elder in fallout 4. Sarah was so cool to me when I first played fallout 3 and her and her father are a huge reason why the brotherhood are my favorite faction in fallout. I hate how she was killed off screen and how brutal Maxim can be is so jarring to how nice Lyons was.
BoS are assholes in every game besides Fallout 3, Lyons is the outlier.

There is one argument that kills the Lone Survivor is a synth theory; considering the murderous hijinks you can get up to in the Institute don't you think someone would've tried using your shut-down code?
You would think...but Bethesda was clearly dead set against allowing the player to fail in any way in Fallout 4. Hell, you can't even lock yourself out of certain factions before the "point of no return" in the story line. It's ironic, really... considering how in Morrowind, you could completely brick your save by accidentally...or intentionally... killing the wrong NPC
Austin Hourigan of ShoddyCast has a great theory about this and how the Lone Survivor could be considered a "Gen 4 Synth." It's really well thought-out

Another fun fact about the EU copies of classic Fallout: for the UK release of Fallout 2, calling the different medical items drugs was not allowed, and instead they were renamed to chems. This name stuck for some reason, and now it’s canon to call things chems and not drugs.

In fallout 4 the Mr. Handy lookout at the U.S.S. constitution will scan and recognize you as a member of the military (if nate). It seemed like a weird thing for the institute to be able to fake to me, but I still think it's up to interpretation
And if you play as Nora it will recognize you as a lawyer.
The face is still the same, whether he's a synth or not. Without a military ID on hand, the Mr. Handy would just scan Nate and run his image against a database of military service members
Is this the "Soul Survivor is really a Synth" thing again? That only Comes from DiMa, who is known to lie to a lot of people and be very dishonest. Shaun always looks like a combination of Nate and Nora, and the "What do you remember before the bombs?" Thing doesn't hold up as there are several times when you talk about and have memories about stuff before the start of the Game.
@@harrisonhurst6480 thats not proof of anything. If the sole survivors death as a human is when you go in the cryostasis pod and after that the institute created a synth of the person, it would look exactly like the sole survivor, just like mayor mcdonough, just like Roger Warwick, just like Art.
As for having memories again its stated that the synths have memories of the humans. Paladin danse has memories of growing up in rivet city.

An entire episode covering the S'Lanters would be interesting. Another reason they may have been cut is the characters and design of their areas was very close to TSR's Gamma World's Badders (intelligent badgers)

I think the vagueness of the soul survivor being a synth or not is deliberate . They left you your own headcanon space
Bethesda has done little nods like this before in the Elder Scrolls games; I think it's meant to be a joke or tap on the fourth wall about how your character doesn't exist until you start playing as them and has very little canon backstory. IIRC in Oblivion and Morrowind there's some implication that your protagonist literally does zip into existence from nothing at the start of the game.
They badly try to imitate Blade runner own dilemna about rickard being a synth.
@@Gutvald Bladerunner doesn't have a monopoly on humanoid robots. They also don't have a monopoly on ambiguity about a character's true background. Humanoid robots are a concept that goes back to the conception of robots, and the most natural story arc for that story element is the ambiguity about whether or not a certain character is a robot. Doctor Who had storylines like that years before Bladerunner even came out
It was deliberate but they completely botched it seeing as how the Soul Survivor makes several mentions of events before the beginning of the game yet in Far Harbor that's as far back as he can remember for some reason.
When I first found your channel, you only had tier 1 uploaded and I was sad because it looked like the second one might never come. Now we're on tier 3 and I can't wait for the next one. Some of my most anticipated uploads from anyone.

I definitely thought that Sarah Lyons' death was a political assassination from the moment I read that terminal entry. It just seems too damn convenient for her death to have led to a teenager being made Elder. Arthur may be skilled in combat, but I don't believe for a second that he was the most qualified out of ALL the members of the CW Brotherhood, especially when Elder Lyons had a whole team of skilled high-level people other than just his daughter - are we to believe that someone like Star Paladin Cross or Head Scribe Rothschild couldn't have done the job?
I think the traditionalists purposefully picked a string of incompetent Elders to buy time for Arthur to get old enough to be made a leader without him being *blatantly* a figurehead. And of course, for them to have done a bad enough job that a sixteen year old child seemed like a good option.

As I recall, Carla is an asset, not a synth (then again so is cricket... come to think of it, where any of the wandering merchants NOT spys/informants for the institute? I am not playing currently, and do not recall the whole list... I tend to double tap carla and crickit once I gain access to the institute.

the note on the brother hood elders dying and often having short reins reminded me of a period in roman history called "the period of the five good emperors" a period of 13 years in which they had many emperors one of which, Pertinax, only ruled for 86 days before his death. rather off topic but an interesting time in history to say the least.
Dr. Edward Blackburn kind of reminds me of the Hulk, a scientist who when exposed to radiation becomes a hulking green behemoth
I had a thought a while ago that the whole of The Commonwealth's population is in fact nothing but synths, and that the whole game, even the endings in which The Institute was apparently destroyed, was in fact part of a grander social engineering experiment done by The Institute, an experiment greater than *_anything_* Vault Tech came up with. They'd replace the totality of Commonwealth's populace with synths, watch what happens to simulate a post-apocalyptic environment both in-situ and in-vitro simultaneously in order to come up with the ideal situations for rebuilding and reshaping the world to achieve a utopian existence while testing technologies that they would use to achieve it. All the while the game would be going on, the *_REAL_* Institute would be holed up in an even deeper underground bunker facility that goes even further underground than the one we see in-game. They'd orchestrate the whole thing from start to finish, possibly multiple times over to account for hidden or unseen variables (got to run experiments more than one time after all), rebuild everything in-between, then start the whole thing up all over again, so even the playthroughs that we do have a meta-existent reason for existing in Fallout 4.
The notion that synths don't always drop synth components was my mental "evidence" of this. I took it as meaning, "Synths don't always drop *_intact_* synth components that your character would pick up" rather than the notion that there were no robotic pieces there at all.
I could seriously listen to these for hours on end, was a little sad when I knew it was the end of the video haha but looking forward to part 4 big time.

You missed a "secret synth" thing. It's not a specific character, but any time you recruit a generic settler character to one of your settlements, there's a chance they'll secretly be a synth. This can be discovered by either having them drop a synth component should a raid on that settlement kill them off, or by the fact that should you earn the ire of the Institute, these random settlers-due to being synths-are in the Institute faction, so you'll have one of your settlers suddenly start attacking you the second you come back to a settlement.
Also one rare thing abaout settler synths when you come in settlement there are settlers claiming someone being synth and then you need to talk abaout that person and decide what to do. I have play over 1000 hours and i have seen that happend only one time
it's been a while since I played far harbour but I remember the conversation with DiMA about the SS's potential synthhood and having nick as my companion (which, by the way, if you don't have nick as your companion while playing FH you're missing out on a LOT lol)
if the SS chooses the option that's something like "I could be a synth, I don't know" I remember nick vehemently responding that you're definitely not a synth. I might be misremembering because it's been some time but I always remembered that as sort of a funny interaction
The sole survivor being a synth makes no sense from a narrative standpoint either, why would Kellog refer to the player character as the spare if you're a synth?
Especially since Shaun is essentially the basis for the gen 3 synths. It'd make no sense for one to already exist before they were developed

I like your point on Maxson & Sarah Lyons but a question I've always wondered and never gotten answer to is whether not Bethesda directly acknowledges FO 1, 2, and NV lore. They have carried over a fair amount of FO 1 & 2 lore(Harold, Brotherhood of Steel, the FEV, the Enclave), especially considering that, IIRC, it's directly stated on a terminal(nevermind the name itself) that Arthur Maxson is the DIRECT ANCESTOR to Roger Maxson, who is a pre-war military captain(so the lineage goes back far), and the creator of the Brotherhood of Steel. As far as I've experienced however, there's little crossover between the West and the East coasts. I like the idea that the West coast is somehow still a strong force and is in contact with the East coast, but given Fallout New Vegas, the situation seems a little grim. So maybe it has something to do with the "inner circle" Christine was part of, something that probably would've been established post-Fallout 2(as in Fallout 2, the Brotherhood is mysteriously absent with exception to one person, presumably the same person, you meet throughout several areas that gives you hints and access to brotherhood bunkers throughout the game. In Fallout 2, I think the implication is that the Brotherhood had to go into hiding for a bit due to the 'war' with the Enclave, and you can see this in New Vegas too with the Hidden Valley bunker. Some kind of organization controlling the Maxson bloodline would make sense overall though, as throughout all the games it's been a consistent fact that the Brotherhood as a whole is very traditional and very uptight about its rules. Any sort of change would cause issues within the organization as a whole, and it's made clear in FO3 that the Capital Wasteland Brotherhood is not exactly keeping to its roots, and the outcasts defecting probably don't help the situation either.
So, to summarize, you're probably right on most accounts with exception to *who* would be controlling Maxson is something that seems to be the missing puzzle piece, as even if you consider that Maxson himself orchestrated all of this, you'd have to wonder how a child would've planned the coup, for something that he was already entitled to as per his bloodline. IIRC the same terminal in FO3 details that the plan is for Maxson to grow up until he's fit to lead. It's an interesting part of Fallout's lore because ultimately the Brotherhood, outside of the Enclave, is THE pre-war remnants of the Fallout universe. Nothing pre-war really exists outside of smaller 'factions' e.g. The Think Tank, The Institute if you don't destroy it, The Enclave if they somehow still exist, although speaking on The Enclave, they almost certainly have bases all over the US as a concerted effort to have post-war military presence as opposed to The Brotherhood, which has its roots in a single military installment at a military base who then abandoned the location after the war to then make their own faction.

Paladin Danse is also a Synth. Designation M7-97. There are many theories as to why he in the Brotherhood...such as being a runaway synth, reprogrammed by the railroad or a sleeper agent who never completed his mission due to some errors in his programming.
It’s explicitly said so in the game, so that’s why he excluded it
I think the Fallout 4 protagonist had forgotten much of their past before being frozen as a side effect of being held in cryogenic stacis for so long.
There's some interesting stuff here. There's a mod for fallout 2 where you can add the baby killer perk too your game. I love fan made mods. And removing the bloody timers in fallout one

Another read on the "Puppet-Maxon" idea could be that his appointment was a solution. Like, after Sara Lyon's death took the BoS by surprise, we'll assume, and after a couple of these ineffectual leaders with no prepared vision or ambition, Arthur was chosen because he showcased a natural willingness to combat the Brotherhood's enemies and was a useful figurehead to rally the CW Brotherhood around to avoid further fragmentation.
I am *DEAD CERTAIN* Paladin Danse is a synth. I know this because on one playthrough I sided with the institute, went back to where you first meet danse, killed him and found a synth component in his inventory.

Yeeeeessss I’ve always felt that Maxon either couldn’t get lions to change to his ideals and “had” to kill her and thats why her death weighed so heavily on him. Or that he found out someone else had her killed in order to get him the Elder position.
My favorite thing about Dr. Morbius is that when you confront him and ask about his hostility he just confesses to taking copious amounts of Psycho.

I’ve toyed with the idea of making s’lanter “canon” by incorporating their backstory for the Hairy Deathclaws in Tactics. Of course, that’s not canon either and I don’t work for Bethesda or Interplay, I’m just some guy.

You seem to be deliberatly skipping over some dialog with DiMA and the console in the Institute (Todd's secret). Your character says plainly he does not remember anything but that day. The console is about the new courser with the ability to use VATS.
This is a dialogue error, your character makes clear allusions to prior events during the pre-war segment. Not to mention, it can't possibly be an implanted memory because you actually play it, you have agency during it. There are also other instances, such as when meeting the Greentop bots, where Nate/Nora allude to seeing things on TV or reading things in comic books, etc.

I'm genuinely curious, I don't remember much from playing the game, I always saw it as the developers not wanting to code when the VATS are activated, upon grabbing the pip-boy.
I believe there is a terminal about synths having VATS in the Institute, yes. Though I agree the "not wanting to program" bit is just as likely. Still, a fun extra bit to the theory

And in fact when you get out off cryopod you cant use VATS until you pick up weapon. I belive reason for that is simply that devs wants to teach VATS for players against very weak enemies like radroaches, overall first 30-60 minutes feels like tutorial like for example when Sturges telling abaout power armor you have even option ask what is power armor like you wouldnt never hear of it even tho you have being army veteran.

You can know what things are without actually remembering them. There is a specific from of amnesia where that happens. It's possible to forget your past but still remember how to do math. Work a car and tie your shoes. So knowing about things prewar is no proof the SS has memories of life pre war.

I honestly figured Arthur killed Sarah in battle, and successfully passed it off as either a casualty of raiders of friendly fire, with the subsequent number of failed elders being a standard succession crisis all autocratic hierarchies have when faced without a clear leader amplified by strong divisions between Lyons-supporters and Transitionalists and Maxon trying to expedite his way to Elder

I absolutely agree with the whole Sarah Lyons theory! Definitely never felt right finding out that she pasted the way we do. Such an important Character in FO3 to just find out that she died less then 2 years after FO3 always felt Crazy! And with such little information about it I dunno have to agree that there should have been more for such a memorable character that played such a Large Role in hundreds of hours spent in the Capital Wasteland

I think having high rad count is a strategy in 76, there's some perk that gives you huge benefits having high rads
