    Hi, my intercooler fluid turned brown, and the large one is still green (a little blue I think). I bought my car (2019 440i) from another student, and he told me that he added the coolant in some gas station (repairing store). I do not know whether they added the BMW authorized coolant. So, according to the brown color, could you give me any advice about this? Two coolers are all needed to top up (below the min). I decide to add green coolant into the large one, and a little confused about the small one ( the yellow coolant inside).

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The intercooler coolant turning brown seems to be a common occurrence. I have had it aswell and others advised it happened to them. Recommend that you flush/empty the system and replace with fresh coolant. If the fluid was once blue coolant, then there has been a chemical alteration. There is no way to know if only the dye element (colour) has changed or also it's corrosion protection and anti-freeze properties. Therefore to be sure, the fluid needs to be replaced. If the car has blue coolant refill with blue coolant. If the car has HT-12 green coolant then refill with green coolant. Do not mix the coolants.

      @@NoBrainerTalk Hi, thanks for your reply. I drive my car to the bmw official dealer as my car is still under the warranty. And they told me that there are two different coolants for B58 engine, and it is normal for the B58 engine that the coolant is yellow (brown) in the small hole. BUT, I think he lied, because I know that there are only two colors (blue and green) coolants for BMW. And when I pick up my car and drive home, I wait the engine to cooldown for more than 3 hours, and I opened the engine to check the coolant status, I found that they add the blue coolant in the big hole (which contains blue coolant before), and while in the smaller one, it is still yellow (but looks like green when I use my phone flashlight to look into the hole) and I use a tissue to get some out I found it is still yellow. So, in conclusion, I think at least the yellow (brown) color is normal for BMW B58, and I decide to get it replaced as my new car warranty will expire this year. By the way, is there any other service that is worth for me to get (maybe cost some small money) before the new car warranty expire?

    Can you top it with water in extreme cold temperature?

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, it depends what you mean by top it up. :) For example if the intercooler coolant circuit holds about 4 litres of coolant, then 2 litres of that is anti-freeze and 2 litres of that is distilled water approximately (50/50). If I were to pour 100ml of distilled water into my expansion tank to replace 100ml lost coolant (50ml anti-freeze and 50ml of distilled water), I would now have 1.95litres of anti-freeze and 2.05litres of water, so my mix would change to 48.8/51.2 anti-freeze to water. Is 48.8/51.2 OK? It probably is, but if the weather is extreme cold, the need for anti-freeze obviously increases. I would generally avoid deviating from OEM limits if possible in extreme weather environments especially. However a small change of 50ml either way is likely to be tolerable for the short term, so if you topup with a small quantity of water then add the same quantity of anti-freeze later on to keep the right mix.

      It's a "normal" issue for the B58 to occasionally experience some coolant loss. In a perfect BMW B58 engine there should not be any coolant consumption or loss, but an initial loss over 30,000km is very very good. Not perfect, but certainly others reported much worse. Thanks for the video! Do you know where the drain points are for either tank? I've been meaning to do a flush as my secondary tank appears to be clear so may have been filled with water rather than antifreeze. Also, BMW say you should use a vacuum filling method for these, is that correct?

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I believe that the complete draining is done by disconnecting the lowest hose on each of the radiators, which will end up draining the entire systems. For the antifreeze in the intercooler expansion tank which you say looks clear, please extract some in a syringe for example and kindly let me know if it is the same as mine in this video (i.e. light brownish colour):
      th-cam.com/video/C6sIVTQh9xA/w-d-xo.html
      BMW uses the vacuum filling method as that bleeds trapped air from the system. If you refill the cooling circuits without the vacuum filling method, you will need to bleed each cooling circuit manually with its respective bleeding procedure. The bleeding procedure is activated from within the car without tooling but could take multiple times to fully bleed and up to 40mins per circuit, so the vacuum filling method saves time.

      @@michaelkelly3158 Yes, since posting these videos, a few people have confirmed the same finding. It's not something the local BMW dealer could explain, and I tried multiple times to get an answer from BMW themselves unsuccessfully. All I can say is that the brownish liquid smells sweet like coolant, and I do believe the local dealer when they say they never touched it, i.e. this is how it came out of the factory. Perhaps this is a temporary fluid that is used by BMW to flush out production debris, or coat the coolant system with anti-corrosion layer, a fluid that was supposed to be drained before departure from the factory. So I think it's unlikely to be harmful, it's more likely to be inefficient at extracting heat from the charge air. There's no external indication. You have to open the coolant expansion tanks and look at the yellow indicator within. This means you have to wait for the engine to be cool, otherwise you could get hurt when you open the pressurised and very hot coolant expansion tank cap. The yellow level indicator is inside the coolant so you know whether you are at minimum or maximum with the fluid level. Too much coolant (i.e. above max) means the indicator is completely covered, too little coolant means the indicator is dry because the coolant is below it. So the indicator is OK for quick check of the coolant.

If either of the expansion tanks is low and you have access to BMW approved coolant, fill it to the correct level and monitor it every day for a couple of weeks (never open the caps with the engine hot). If it goes down again and you have no indication from where by looking around (it could potentially be anywhere in the circuits, check your radiators aswell in case a stone has caused damage), then get your car to the dealer or qualified mechanic to pressurise the system(s) and perform a leak check (but don't drive it with empty coolant expansion tanks).

      at first fill engine should be off but after, yes engine should be running if water pump is mechanical and you release the air with the plastic screw there also open the filling cap too. first close the main cap first and then tighten the plastic bolt. if you have a prince bmw engine then you have a secondary air release bolt on the transmission heater too you also need to release air from it.

    Great video. Question, just drained coolant on mine and also did the bleeding procedure. The coolant in the main tank for engine cooling stays at the correct level. However, the second reservoir for intercooler went below minimum mark everyday after using my car(it has been 3 days) and I filled it back up 3 times accumulating about 500ml of 50/50mix coolant already. I assume the secondary reservoir uses electric pump which should already had been bled as I mentioned earlier. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry to hear about your issues. The bleeding procedure can be imperfect, and topup soon after is not uncommon. However, assuming this is persisting (topup daily), and you don't suspect the expansion tank cap (no sign of spills/evaporation), you probably have a leak somewhere in the intercooler coolant circuit. Have a good look at the intercooler radiator at the front of the car, especially if you don't have the black stone guards. If you do have the stone guards focus especially in the middle area where there is a gap between the stone guards. If there is no obvious sign of leak (at the radiator or elsewhere in the engine bay), and the coolant continues to be consumed at this rate, the system needs to be pressurised for troubleshooting. It's possible for the coolant to be lost in the intercooler and end up in the cylinders for combustion, so also check for the smell of coolant from the exhaust while the engine is running. If you see noticeable smoke from the exhaust this would also be a sign of coolant going into the cylinders.

    • @Bennymix99
      @Bennymix99 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the detailed explanation.
      The intercooler reservoir fluid stayed level between min and max without having to top off for years until I did the coolant drain, so while the leakage might be the problem, I am leaning towards the imperfect bleeding procedure. Just curious if the bleeding procedure (low beam on, heater to max and lowest fan setting + holding the accelerator actually bleeds both engine and intercooler coolant or is it just for one of them?
      Also, just monitor the intercooler reservoir again after letting the car cool down and the coolant level seems to remain where it should be now :)

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Bennymix99 I believe there's a dedicated bleeding procedure for the intercooler coolant circuit. The small expansion tank is for the intercooler circuit (charge air cooler) and it's an independent coolant circuit that does not cool the turbo. Loss of coolant from the intercooler coolant circuit could reduced performance, but what you describe seems to be more severe. Coolant can be lost from the expansion tank cap, so not having a puddle underneath is not strange. I don't think you mentioned if you have any CEL, personally I would plug in a scanner to OBD2 port and check for fault codes (e.g. defective sensors can manifest in poor engine management by the ECU/DME). But generally it sounds like you should take your car to qualified mechanic for full check-up, possibly on a trailer if you believe there is a serious engine issue.

      If it's the BMW G48 blue coolant then yes, you need to mix it with distilled water (50/50). This is a good thing because you can be sure how much distilled water is there, as the distilled water is the primary cooling fluid in the 50/50 mix, but the coolant / anti-freeze is essential for corrosion protection, lubrication, etc. The instructions will be on the bottle, and it's always good to follow OEM guidelines. It might say "mix equal parts of anti-freeze and water" or something like that, it might not say mix 50/50.

      BMW coolant is nitrite and phosphate free, is that stated on the Honda coolant container? if yes, then theoretically you can use it in a BMW engine. But there are various additives in coolant, that may be in different mixture combinations. Not saying the BMW coolant is superior, just that it might be different to Honda coolant even if they are both blue colour as well as nitrate and phosphate free. I'm not sure if you would be topping up BMW coolant with Honda coolant, or flushing the system(s). Toping up has a risk that there may be chemical reactions between the two (you could not say for sure unless you tested them and found them to be intermixable in peak operating conditions). Generally speaking for my engine, I would stick to BMW coolant.

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, even if an anti-freeze is blue, it does not necessarily mean it is BMW approved or appropriate for a BMW engine. Different anti-freeze is dyed different colours by different manufacturers to help users avoid mixing them, but it is not set in stone that any colour means anything specific. The BMW blue coolant does need to be mixed with distilled water (this way you can ensure that there is 50% water which is the primary cooling agent). There are pre-mixed coolants out there (they do not need to be mixed with water) but the properties need to be checked to ensure they can be used in a BMW engine. Generally, it is advisable to stick to BMW anti-freeze and in that case yes it needs to be mixed 50/50 with distilled water before being added to the expansion tank. In all cases, please do read the instructions on the anti-freeze container.

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I presume you mean in the engine coolant expansion tank, as the intercooler coolant expansion tank does not have a sensor. This is a common observation by B58 owners, that coolant drops below minimum in the engine coolant expansion tank, and it is found visually before any warning from the sensor. This can only mean the real minimum level of coolant (which triggers the warning) is actually below the level that the internal indicator indicates to be the "minimum." The "minimum" level indicated in the tank might be for best power retention of the engine, whereas the true minimum level (detected by the sensor) might be to prevent engine overheat damage. If you saw the expansion tank is bone dry empty and there was no warning, then yes this is likely a defect with the sensor, otherwise don't worry, just top it up to just below maximum. For the second question, if you have coolant that you know for sure is not BMW approved coolant, you need to get it flushed out. The various components of the coolant system are designed to tolerate/use a very specific coolant specification and coolant of different specification can theoretically be harmful to those components (e.g. compromised lubrication, corrosion resistance, etc). There's no reason to use non BMW approved coolant (and bear in mind now there are two coolants, the classic blue coolant and the green HT-12).

      Yes, newer cars will have the more environmentally friendly HT-12 which generally comes in green although early batches came in magenta. There's some information that HT-12 and the blue coolant are intermixable, but I would check with the official BMW manuals before doing so. Generally, if the car has blue coolant in the tanks then it makes sense to top-up with blue coolant. If the car has green or magenta coolant (remove a sample with syringe or turkey baster to check, i.e. not against the internal tank yellow indicator), then it makes sense to topup with green HT-12 coolant (you can topup with magenta HT-12 theoretically, but the magenta HT-12 was a limited production and won't be easy to find as a spare).

      @@oneofm3409 Yes, HT-12 will also need to be prepared as 50/50 anti-freeze and distilled water. Please make sure by reading the instructions on the back of the container.

    Hey man!
    Im losing coolant from the main tank in the b48 320i engine, i filled it up with 50/50 like you did and after 5 months it was losing halv coolant it now in the minimum range. So i went to bmw and they sad that it should lose some coolant even in the diesel version and he sad that if you coolant warning lights is coming up than its something wrong, and i should not fill it upp just to se if the coolant light is going to pop up.
    So what do you say about my case losing half of the coolant after 5 months?

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point at which the warning light comes on is even below minimum. I would not drive a car for extended periods with a coolant level below minimum. You should keep your coolant levels within the levels decided by BMW, and if there is unexplained drop in the coolant level again, the dealer should pressurise the system and check for leaks. Coolant level drop can occur for many reasons (e.g. incorrect bleeding procedure), but if it happens repeatedly then the root cause needs to be found. I hope this helps.

      @NoBrainerTalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, unfortunately this is a well known issue. If it continues to occur, I might replace the cap and see if it helps. Further to comments on the other video, I will also monitor intercooler coolant colour, and see if it changes.

      @@NoBrainerTalk The problem is that the engine runs at 110 degrees Celsius and the water in the coolant evaporates. So the tank cap will probably be ok.

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sami.p.3355 Indeed, but due to being a sealed pressurised system, the boiling/evaporating temperature should increase above 110. In addition the anti-freeze will also help increase the boiling temperature of the mixture. It sounds therefore that (a) it's possible for the cap to not seal the tank properly or continuously (hence the boiling temp can be 100 deg C which is too low for normal coolant temperatures), and/or (b) the anti-freeze is not properly mixing with the water. Hence when the coolant mixture reaches and exceeds 100 deg C, the water element is able to evaporate out of the tank (something it should not be able to do). Hmmm...

      @@NoBrainerTalk Its could be some leak anywhere from hose connecters to PCV valve to gaskets to 1001 things in the circuit as well no?

    • @NoBrainerTalk
      @NoBrainerTalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keithw4920 It sure could be, but I can't see any wetness or residue anywhere else. Presumably wherever it would leak from externally would result in the same white residue as I saw near the cap. After 100+ km of driving since my topup there is no change. I wonder if it leaks only when I drive it very hard at my "test track"..
