      @@L4-295 That's because most people want to hear his stories about the comedic legends he rubbed shoulders with throughout his career, and who TF wouldn't drop those names if you had the same experiences. Too many people don't even realize who Neal is these days, so it's amusing that you'd try to act like he's doing it for some purely selfish motivation. That just seems like a YOU issue....

If I was your kid I’d be constantly bragging and telling all the other kids about how cool my Dad is. When you go back and watch Delirious Murphy's so funny it’s insane by anyone’s standards. Even Chappelle borrows his jokes. In the new special, Dave talks about advising Obama to run in a zigzag pattern (to avoid snipers), Eddie essentially made the same joke, referring to the first black president, in Delirious. Which I'm pretty sure he named after the Prince song, now that I think of it.

    5:45 "Opened against Titanic, Goldeneye, Good Will Hunting, and maybe Big Lebowski"
    He makes it sound like 'Half Baked' was released the same weekend all those other movies were released.
    'Half Baked' was released MLK weekend 1998. 'Titanic' was #1, but it was in it's 5th week. 'Good Will Hunting' was #2, but it was in it's 7th week. #3 was 'Fallen' - (Denzel Washington movie) which was in it's opening weekend. #4 was 'As Good As It Gets' which was in it's 4th week. #5 was 'Hard Rain' (shitty Christian Slater movie) which was it's first weekend. #6 was 'Half Baked'.
    'Goldeneye' wasn't in theaters...it was released in '95. I guess he's thinking 'Tomorrow Never Dies' which was in it's 5th week at the time (#8 that weekend).
    'The Big Lebowski' wasn't in theaters either. It came out 2 months later.
    So yeah, 'Half Baked' is a funny-ass movie, but it wasn't built for box office success. It was released over MLK weekend which isn't a big money release slot (see the other movies above that also opened that weekend...'Fallen' and 'Hard Rain' weren't big money makers). Movies released during that weekend (and other historically slow weekends) are typically not expected to do much. A lot of that comes from who made the movie. With 'Half Baked' you've got a stoner movie written by Neal Brennan (at the time he'd only written for some garbage TV shows) and Dave Chappelle (who had written for Def Jam and not a lot else). It's starring Chappelle, who was best known for 'Robin Hood: Men in Tights' and 'The Nutty Professor'...which were both memorable roles, but not anything close to leading roles. The biggest co-star was probably Jim Breuer who really hadn't been in anything yet. It's director (which is probably the most important part in getting a studio behind a movie) was Tamra Davis who had directed 'Billy Madison' which I certainly liked, but I doubt many executives were running around talking about how shampoo is better or how it's too damn hot for a penguin to just be walking around.
    The best case for 'Half Baked' was to keep the budget low (which they did) and hope that enough people hear about it being funny that you can turn a small profit. It did OK, but it didn't make a lot of cash. All it really could have been for anyone associated was a stepping stone.

    Chappelle Show is without a doubt the GREATEST sketch comedy show ever made. I honestly can’t even think of a close (or even a distant) second. Kroll Show is SUPER underrated and Key and Peele is great (but wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for Dave Chappelle.) but IMO you could take all of their best sketches combine them with all of the greatest SNL and Mad TV sketches and compile them into one Mega all star season and it still wouldn’t stand up to either season of Chappelle Show. Lol not even joking.

So we're sitting there and out of no where a P.S.A goes across the screen and it says
    "Puerto Ricans Sure are Lazy Michael"
    and then cuts back to the show. We flipped the hell out I looked at everybody and made sure they saw what I saw lol Btw this was on a DVD I had just bought.

      @thegreatgambeeno 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A lot of Pryor's stuff doesn't age well. It worked well at the time because it was groundbreaking and very of the time. Chappelle's humor tends to be more like viewing things in context of what we can learn from it and is usually more introspective. I feel like that makes it easier for even future generations to listen to and take from it. Pryor didn't really evolve as much as he just built on what he was doing from the start. Chappelle seems to have matured and evolved into a whole different beast.

    • @voteZDLR
      @voteZDLR 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The host always takes the back seat to the interviewee. That's just the way it goes, the Host will chime in every so often and will help steer the conversation usually where they discussed it would go backstage ahead of the interview (in the case of late night TV especially) but any talk format show like this the guests, whoever they are, are the stars of the night whereas the host if he's doing his job right is just "the familiar face/voice". These kinds of shows exist to serve the Hollywood machine, more often than not a guest is only on the show because they're trying to promote their most recent product... for Hollywood. And the host's job is to facilitate it. For Hollywood.

    I appreciate Tom & Christine, and YMH is a unique platform/show. That said: Christine is bad at swearing, lol. Clumsy.
    Most comics at least don't do it if they suck, and many swear fluently or at least naturally. Not even comparing comedy prowess - just the articulation of the cursing!
    Tom's solid, and think about Mitch H, Theo, or Ron White, South Park, and up to Carlin, Pryor, the Murphy brothers...
    You can hear her slathering on that swear frosting, and it comes off like Ned Flanders’ wife with Tourette’s, as if she learned to swear in her 20's 😂
