Living through the Thatcher years, one thing I became acutely aware of whenever I listened to the news was that the lists of industries I had memorised for British towns as part of geography were rapidly going out of date, but only because every day we heard of more factories closing down for ever. Whole industries disappeared and some were replaced by outsourcing, often from the Far East. Coal began to be imported from Poland!

The truth is that Thatcher was a reluctant convert to monetarism, but what monetarism meant was that because Britain was a small nation with a major banking & insurance sector, when this became dominant the pound rose in value & numerous businesses ceased to be viable, the only way to have prevented this would have been to put the financial sector into some sort of free trade area isolated from the rest of the economy.

Retail and Tourism internally is being crushed. Staff numbers have dwindled on the vine as the lack of recruitment and retention has been used . Not enough rail freight is killing growth and investment. HS2 was never about speed. It was investing in growth , opportunity and equality of economic opportunities outside of the Global M25 Bastion.
