  • Hello Discerning Pen Friends,
Today we cast our judgment upon the Duke 2009 "Charlie Chaplin" Tribute Fountain Pen whilst delving into the question of Why Chaplin maintains such cultural significance among Chinese fans so long after his death on December 25th, 1977. It's quite fascinating!
Also, I just wanted to take this moment to THANK those of you who have supported our little channel so far! It really means the world to us!

[4:08] • DUKE 2009 "Charlie Cha... I refer to Chaplin's parents being alcoholics. In fact, Charles Sr. was an untreated alcoholic with whom Chaplin lived in 1898 (at age 9) when his mother, Hannah, was committed to an asylum. His father's condition was so severe that he died from cirrhosis of the liver in 1900 (at age 38). This was long before successful treatments for alcoholism existed (Alcoholic Anonymous was founded by Bill Wilson in 1935).

One of the best Chaplin assessments I've seen, and in a fountain pen review! Kudos! Such fun. The first silent film I ever saw was The Gold Rush, 1925. Contains many classic Chaplin scenes, especially the dancing dinner rolls. I may have to get this pen as a matter of pure respect. Thanks, Panda!

I look forward to reminding myself of the dancing dinner rolls! Thanks so much for the comment, and glad you found it interesting, David

Great review and thanks for taking the time to do it! My pen arrived today and I have to say it’s lovely to write with, I will pop back here in a few weeks and give an update on how I’m getting on with it.

I bought this pen today. I was intrigued after watching your BRILLIANT video.
I bought it in purple as I don't have purple pen.
Unfortunately this pen doesn't come with a box.
Most of my Duke pens are boxed namely the Opera Mask Pen and the white porcelain pen which is a historical themed pen about the Guan Gong culture.
    Oh well......
Love your articulate videos. Keep them coming.

Dear Panda, I hope you can provide an answer. First thanks for the well made video and review. I bought this pen recently but with a Fude nib and I'm extremly unhappy with it. So I bought some #5 standard nibs, Hero and Jinhao brands, EF and F. To my surprise they don't fit at all, as it looks to me the original Duke #5 nibs are thinner by 0.1 mm. The standard nibs simply can't pushed inside with the original Duke feed. As well any other #5 feeds aren't working. Do you know how to do a nib swap on the Duke(s)? So far I didn't find any suitable infos about Duke nibs or replacement nibs for it on the web. Thanks for any input.
UPDATE: Any standard #5 nibs from Jinhao or Hero or any other brand will definetly fit to Duke FP's/ I found out that the spare #5 nibs engraved with Jinhao must be faulty, they even don't fit to any Jinhao FP! So this spare nib "bargain" was indeed money thrown away.

My history grads made good use of this video for their discussion of masculinity, analyzing your oh so sensual and lovely writing sample, your ink stained hands, the amazing leap to why China would honor Chaplin...they debated lefthandedness and the class symbolism of "getting your hands dirty." They also admitted you were "very engaging" and that you have set the bar high for their film making aspirations. Brilliant and wild.

Hi there, I really enjoyed the Chaplin review. I like pens and I'm a massive Chaplin fan. 'The Tramp' means a lot; it's a piece of history that people would do well to revisit or discover in these strange and disconnected times we find ourselves in. Times when people seem to pass blame and responsibility and compassion down the chain, classing them as qualities that 'other people' can and will deal with. 'The Tramp' always made the best of a bad situation. You don't get those kinds of messages and that level of wisdom from the 'heroes' of today. Everything seems diluted by the incessant campaign to fill brains with the toxins of greed and insular lifestyles. Anyway... I digress. Pleased to see this review, great work! P. S. Yesterday I received a very nice pen... A Namisu Ixion. Just puttin' it out there.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. :) Completely agree with your assessment of Chaplin's 'Tramp' - the absence of such creatures from our lives these days is such a shame. I think it's important to look back fondly from time to time! Thanks for taking the time to watch. And do let us know what you think of the Namisu Ixion!

FYI - I wrapped a orthodontic elastic (rubber band for braces) around the very end of the converter and it stopped the rattle. This is one of m favorite pens. Surprisingly, I enjoy the weight of it.

Did you do a review of this pen using the fude nib?

Love this review. I am expecting my pen this week. I am a FP newbie and this is the first pen I fell in love with. I am worried about the M nib though... I have noticed that I prefer F nibs...

Is the nib removable (by normal means?) - might want to switch it out. Pull / friction fit? Don't want to damage the section if it is meant to be of a single piece....

I am so encouraged by your positive words, esp about the weight. I have one on a slow boat from China, bought under the theory that a very heavy pen's inertia might change my drawing experience in some positive way. Thanks for informative review.

    • @ichirofakename
      @ichirofakename 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Follow up: yes, drawing with a heavy pen feels smoother and more in control. But concomitant risk is that pen may continue past intended stopping point if you are not careful. Not positive yet if it is a net gain, but assuming it isn't a net loss, the feeling is a good thing in itself.

    BRILLIANT VIDEO.
    Articulate and very well presented.
We have spoken before and I have purchased some of your review pens. Particularly the Peking Opera Pen.
I will be buying this. BTW I have never had a bad nib on a Duke pen.

I was always intrigued by this pen whenever I saw it for sale, because I had no idea Charlie Chaplin was an important figure in China. I also never saw the similarities between the tramp and the pens shape and now it all makes sense. Thank you as always a very interesting video.

I have a black Duke Charlie Chaplin pen and ta da, a purple Duke Charlie Chaplin pen inked with Waterman's Tender Purple. Awesome pen.
Try pushing the converter in tighter to cure your rattle.
The nib writes upside down with a finer line for notes if required

With a pen that's so heavy, it would have made so much more sense if it had a screw-on cap. In my opinion, it would have been the perfect pen if it had a screw-on cap.

What an excellent review! I'm glad you didn't skirt round Chaplin's definite political stance, as many people do. You are obviously very familiar with his oeuvre, and your enthusiasm comes across really well.

What kind of nib does the pen comes with? And what about the size? Is it a 5 or 6 nib?

Hi there! Thanks for asking. I extracted and measured it for you: it’s a number #5 I believe. I put a photo of the nib up against a ruler for you right here: instagram.com/p/CFO659LDr_i/?igshid=1qt6u82k5nwy1 Best, -Andy
