The issue isn’t even that their prices are jacked up, it’s that they’re claiming to refurbish consoles, but they don’t. They just buy the console from eBay or a pawn shop or something, maybe wipe the top off, and then slap their warranty sticker on it and claim it’s refurbished. It’s more than just false advertising, it’s a scam.
Charlie, there are legitimately consoles they sold that didn’t even work because they weren’t refurbished and after people cleaned it themselves, it finally worked. Its like paying for a hotel room and after getting inside you see the room and everything is dirty so you had to clean it before you can use the most basic functionalities.
@@Space_Ache literally any video of somebody receiving a console from DKOldies on TH-cam, no joke, three off the top of my head are reviewtechUSA's original xbox, Retrogameguy's n64 and Kreesky's n64, search those. Thank you so much Charlie for shining light on this. I’m afraid prices are going to go up for retro games because of them and I hope you are able to help bring a light to this situation.
Iconic games already made their money back in the day, so any physical copies just benefit re sellers. Just go ahead and find the ROM for whatever you want to re live
EMULATORS. Play literally anything for free. don't get attached to the nostalgia of the original setup, because almost all emulators are far more manageable and reliable, assuming you have the ability to learn how it works and that you have the hardware to run the games smoothly
Thank you for addressing the issues with DKOldies Charlie. Way too many small TH-camrs tried to warn consumers of their fraudulent practices, but nobody would listen.
I used to work in Target electronics with one of the guys in the DK oldies videos. He was a really nice guy and we talked a lot about old school gaming at work. He was genuinely passionate about the stuff. Now he’s not the owner he’s just one of the employees in their videos but it does make me think that they at least employ decent people
People can also change, sadly. What was once a passionate person may in the future use their knowledge gained in that period of passion to scam unknowing victims.
I'm Charlie's age and I've started having the same moments lol. Especially since I've been regularly interacting with 14-16 year Olds they just make me feel old even though I'm not really yet lol.
Can we talk about the brush that was used on the Wii while it was getting cleaned?? What an amazing tool! Not only does it barely suck up the dust, clearly, it also creates new scratches to make sure you get your cosmetically flawed system!
It's why it's so easy to scam on ebay. "No I didn't receive it. No idea what you're talking about. Give me my money back now. No I won't be sending the item back"
They explain the pricing in one of their shorts from (I think) around October. They claimed it was due to them blowing up in populatarity, and everything was going to be more high in demand. And had to buy a bunch of stock, and make a profit off of that stock, But others did some digging on the prices and found that the prices were the same before they started to go viral.
As an Ebay seller, I say it's a lot harder for scammers to become sellers nowadays. Ebay has made some pretty strict rules for sellers. That being said there are still some scammers on there, but the majority are just normal people running a small business, like me.
@@erikvaldes4293 in that case I would look at the rating of the seller and for a product with an actual photo of the controller, not a stock image. Also read the description if it specifically says "original" or if it just says "compatible with" or similar
Lmao are you sure you have used eBay before? A quick search will turn up a massive number of obvious scams and fake products. This is exactly why I rarely use eBay. Shit I mean look at all the TH-cam content based around buying eBay stuff that is an obvious scam
What's insidious is there are whole generations who have not played these retro games, that may competely miss out because of practices like this, which is why emulation is insanely important. Its not so much that they should play them, but they should have the OPTION to.
I got into Fire Emblem in November, and I’ve just had to emulate the older games because some of them run for hundreds of dollars. They’re great games, but this investor(I’m not even going to call them collectors) market has raised the price even more than they’d be normally.
@@pkcell yeah same situation for me. I just finished playing path of radiance and radiant dawn which are definitely two of the best games in the series. Assuming one already has the consoles they run on (wii and GameCube) it would cost them around 500 dollars to buy both of those games. That’s not even money that would go to Nintendo or the developers. You’re literally just paying some speculator. Anyone who says emulation is bad is a fool.
For a while there, I was looking into copies of Conker's Bad Fur Day, and they were going for 300-900 dollars online, then I walked into this random ass mom and pop game shop, and well and behold, Conkers, and only for 20 bucks? Hmmmmm, almost makes you think that the retro games market is a scam.
I remember getting absolutely robbed by gamestop whenever I'd trade in my old console or games, knowing they go for this much now just adds to the pain.
Gamestop should always be the last resort for selling games tbh. Although it's also good if you want to get at least a penny out of some dogshit games that no one else will buy. (i.e Madden, 2k, or any of the Kingdom Hearts games)
so good to see you pick this story up. i've been ripping on these guys for being bad actors in the retro games collecting scene for a while; even taken Joey himself to task a time or two. hopefully this lends some legitimacy to the real problems they cause through essentially scalping desirable pieces and not living up to their claimed service. a couple things i don't know if you touched on: nearly every single product on the site has a falsified sale price. they are listing the prices they always intended to charge as though it's a discount, trying to blatantly manipulate customers. also, while their prices are always high, they become absurd when you look at the most valuable pieces. EarthBound, legendary SNES game, is worth around $200 to $250 in good condition. they've listed it as high as $800, and never less than $600.
I think LegalEagle touched on this in his video on Established Titles, but permanent sales are technically not illegal, for a reason I can’t remember. So there’s a law we need to change.
@@minatoarisato4742 What? You don't buy games to play them. If I see anyone open a sealed Earthbound game, I'd have a heart attack. You buy them to sell them later.
@@Lybrel Absolutely not. You're absolute scum and a terrible person if you're buying something like Earthbound as some kind of idiotic investment. That mentality is exactly what has destroyed nearly all collector markets in the past years. It's just as bad as being a scalper.
Nostalgia comes from Greek "return home pain" and I think that's two feelings back to back. A positive return home feeling, then immediately lamenting that things aren't that way anymore. You don't HAVE to have that last part if you don't choose to though, it's okay that some things can't really be returned to. Wouldn't be life if you weren't always moving forward.
I started collecting retro games in high school and stumbled across dk oldies because they had some obscure stuff I was looking for and then I saw the prices and never went back
I bought a Wii, 2 Wiimotes and a zapper attatchment for the Wiimotes for around 25$ at Goodwill a few months back. Wii and the Wiimotes are in great condition too but it was missing a power cable/video cable. Funny seeing that Wii for 60$, 119$ for the one that isn't cosmetically flawed.
I absolutely love that charlie upon reading the chat message categorizing this situation in some way admits to not knowing and does not make a hasty conclusion unlike other streamers who would've commented instantly without proper research
It’s a pretty low bar when the best reaction channels are simply people who can admit they’re ignorant to a subject before learning more and making a more informed assessment.
That part at the beginning hit me in the gut because I feel it too. Even when it’s all said and done, people will remember you as one of the most genuine guys on the internet. That fear is normal. Talk to people. Let it out. It’s all we can do as human beings to lessen the struggle we all feel inside. I wish you luck in finding happiness.
Finally someone properly defines "nostalgia". I *can* enjoy it, but overall it's incredibly depressing. I can hardly look at old pictures of cute moments because it makes me want to cry 🤣 The only way to move forward happily in this existential crisis called "life" is to live in the moment as much as possible, and when you are going to exit the present, look forward, not back
The nostalgia tangent made my heart kinda sad. Miss you too Charlie. We are all getting older. You helped me through school and now that I'm about to be 19 it's crazy... scammers are gross
This situation is really sad to me. I really enjoyed their tiktok videos and they seemed like a genuinely good company. I'm glad I never bought from them, cuz those prices are insane especially for how little work they seem to actually do
As someone who is invested into this, I can say with most doubts removed, DKOldies deserves all the drama they receive. Still have some reservations but there is some stinky smelly garbo going on.
Can't believe it's only 2 years from 2025. That intro really hit home. Im about the same age but suffer from an auto immune disorder that causes all my joints to pop in and out and has become increasingly painful to where im near immobile now. Incredibly depressing. Especially when you are fighting to survive bc dealing with insurance and doctors and disability and food stamps is incredibly difficult especially when you're disabled and without someone to help i feel im just withering away.
The other major factor not touched on in this video is that they have a "warranty" on every console, but they enforce its conditions through a sealed sticker that warns that opening it at all voids said warranty (word is getting around now that such a policy is not legal in the USA), but uninformed people are scared that DKO will not service or replace the console if it breaks after they've opened it to clean it at home. Worse, some people who do know better are arguing with DKO about it and not getting anywhere because they often refuse to listen to that. So it sounds like a lawsuit might be brewing. They're refusing to help people they took money from, and that' s nasty.
So glad you covered this man, dkoldies has been disastrous to the used market of not even just retro gaming equipment but older tech of any kind which is a pretty big community
From my experience most people lie when they say something is refurbished. Cleaning and resetting an electronic item isn't refurbished. Refurbished would be cleaning, replacing any consumables like batteries/drives, replacing broken parts, replacing thermal paste, and updating software/firmware.
It gets even worse, In the full DkOldies "refurbishing" video they show how they use a magic eraser to remove stickers/adhesive from the consoles, this 100% explains why all of the glossy consoles are in such bad shape, since magic erasers are made for removing paint of stone walls...
Thanks for bringing awareness to this. I've been following this since they started posting their shorts a long while back but can't do anything myself since I'm not in a position to. All we could do was call them out
Nostalgia hurts the most because I was happier then, times were simpler then. Also my mom and dad were healthier and younger then now they're old and sick. My grandma has passed recently and now I have joint pain when approaching into my 30s. When we were young we wanted to be older but now I see I truly took it for granted and wished I savored my childhood a bit more. We have our whole life to be adults but have very little time to be a child.
This is something I'm trying to explain to my 5 1/2 year old. All she wants to do is sit and watch TV and gets cross with me when I tell her to go out. Last night we had a talk about growing up and I was saying to her that she will seriously miss being a kid and she should make the most of it now because being a adult SUCKS I'm 33
Look, I may be a zoomer, but remember that nostalgia is one hell of a drug! You can use it recreationally, but don't get habitual about it. The past felt good, but that's because you don't remember the bad stuff. I'm bearly an adult, but I need to think about my choices in the past. Doing stupid shit in school could have gotten me labeled as a loser with no hope in life! How could a kid end up with that responsibility? Well we all have it. No matter the age. Hardships are replaced with others, but the only way to go is forward. Keep fighting the good fight!
@@paulcarmi8130 so i shouldnt teach my children that they should make the most of being a child? And it's true being an adult does suck, its kinda frowned upon to play in the mud, climb trees, play knock a door run, tig, hide and seek, floor is lava etc etc. if you do that as an adult you'd be sectioned for being mentally unstable..... being an adult is full of boring responsibilities and a whole lot less joy than it did when we were kids. Television will still be there when you are an adult, being carefree and being able to play etc is for a very short amount of time
Yeah dude. I always thought my parents complained too much about moving around. Now im in my 20s and its already hitting me like a freight train. Sit too long on a hard surface and the next day is gonna be painful as hell.

While eBay is definitely a coin toss at times, I prefer having the option to see photos of the exact item I’m going to buy. I can’t trust someone to sell me a used product and not be able to see the condition it’s in and instead have to take their word for it.
Seeing a picture of every angle and a picture of the system turned on is a hundred times more assurance than anything i would get on dkoldies I dont mind the scratches and possible dirt inside and if you do mind it you can look for a system without scratches or with scratches in places you dont mind which is another one up over dkoldies especially buying things from japan thats like a guarantee itll be looked and cared for like a baby im typing this on a pocket laptop i got imported from japan and the inside was literally sparkling and they even replaced the battery with a new one which was the only thing i was scared about because the original batteries were glued on the system with the force of the sun but with that new battery i wont have to worry about replacing it or taking a few hours to remove the glue to not bend the system because they hotglued it :D
I bought shit from them about 10 years ago and my experiences with them at that time were pretty good. I think what happened is what happens with a lot of smaller businesses when they get bigger and that’s the fact that their quality control has declined in order to keep up with demand. It’s shitty, but a lot of places sell their souls to be profitable.
What's funny is that I recently got an internship working at a company that recycles/refurbishes old devices. There is a very long process to ensure that old client data on drives does not go to new customers, that the refurbished devices are perfectly working, etc. I've only been refurbishing for like 2 weeks now but DKOldies' work makes me sick lmao
I mean they don't do anything. That video clip of them cleaning that Wii was in response to people saying their consoles were dirty. Look at the PS Triple Jacob bought (Charlie shows a clip) and they didn't even bother to clean it out at all. The replacement they sent him was much cleaner, still a tiny bit dirty but the thermal paste was all dried up. I doubt DK Oldies knows what thermal paste is.
Seeing the Wii being now a retro console hurts a little. I still have mine and of course it works wonderfully(minus the fact I can’t connect to the wifi) and when I use it I go ballistic.
0:40 at some point in our lives, nostalgia goes from making us happy to have experienced it to sad that it's gone. It's for you to decide how you look back on the past, and how you want to progress.
Today's fact: The most distant star visible to the naked eye is "V76 Cas" located in the Cassiopiea constellation, and it is 16,310 light years away. The light emitting from that star started emitting in around 14000 BC, during which time the Earth was still in the Upper Paleolithic era.
That's so interesting as it opened my eye to the fact that the furthest star we can see is attributed to how long it takes for light to travel to use, so one day, a star we couldn't see the day before as the light had not reached us yet, may become visible to us, becoming the new furthest, that's very interesting to me
I was a district manager for a retro game store, and this is an unfortunate thing that happens at so many of these retro game realtors. The people who owns the company do not give a crap about the quality that just care about the quantity.
When Charlie said that he's getting older, I realized that it never looks like he gets older, his style is still the same from the start of his channel to this day
Not at all? I remember when he didn't even use a camera and his voice was almost souless (but funny) while playing games. When he did a face reveal, he had short hair and was in his early 20s. Now he has long hair, laughs, in his late 20s, and has expanded his content so much now.
For what exactly? Not cleaning their consoles perfectly? They're allowed to make the prices whatever they want, and even at the high price, there seems to be good demand for their products. And I'm sure if someone were to get a defective product, they would work with them to correct the situation.
@@SwagJaws so i can post my dusty, dirty, grimey, thermal melted throttling gpu on the market and say its refurbished? You do realize if that was a business practice, that would be false advertising and illegal to boot right?
7:30 I think it's worth noting that Jacob mentioned that he got a backwards compatible one, which means it's specifically a first-gen 20GB or 60GB PS3. In the first wave of revisions, Sony axed PS2 compatibility from the PS3 (though all PS3s are backwards compatible with PS1 games), meaning those first-gen models fetch a higher price on the second-hand market. They still gouged him for it, but they do sell the later model PS3s at a significantly lower price than $400
Yeah I was going to say this. You can get A PS3 for not a whole lot, but a good condition backwards compatible can get way up in price. I bought one about a year ago for about $260 but looking at them now on Ebay its around 250-400 depending on condition and what comes with it. Those are all prices with official PS3 controllers though, not sure where they found that 3rd party controller and assuming its cheaper overall but at least its new in box.
I didn't know a thing about this until Charlie touched on it I'm kinda disappointed really, I've been following DK Oldies since the 1st showed up on tik tok and it was really heart warming to see a group that was seemingly so dedicated to keeping the old gen alive, hearing about all this is just down right depressing

Do you have examples of this?
@@Space_Ache literally any video of somebody receiving a console from DKOldies on TH-cam, no joke, three off the top of my head are reviewtechUSA's original xbox, Retrogameguy's n64 and Kreesky's n64, search those. He was genuinely passionate about the stuff. Now he’s not the owner he’s just one of the employees in their videos but it does make me think that they at least employ decent people
It's definitely the owner he's such a guy 😅
Usually if it’s this bad it’s more of the people on top that cause the issue.
Well adleast their employees are nice people
why would a "nice" person even work at dkoldies a place known to sell overpriced shit
People can also change, sadly. What was once a passionate person may in the future use their knowledge gained in that period of passion to scam unknowing victims.

What an amazing tool! Not only does it barely suck up the dust, clearly, it also creates new scratches to make sure you get your cosmetically flawed system!
Seems the "cosmetically flawed" is the only thing they do themselves
I think they have enough stock of 'used, like new', but are short of 'cosmetically flawed' so they have to make a few.
The same as them using magic eraser on plastic
There is a pretty low risk of getting scammed on eBay since they almost always side with the buyer rather than the seller if there is an issue.
@@p-__ lemme get a huff

That's crazy, You're better off buying Earthbound on the 3DS for $10 - $11 on the eshop or emulating the game.
@@minatoarisato4742 What? You don't buy games to play them. If I see anyone open a sealed Earthbound game, I'd have a heart attack. You buy them to sell them later.

Charlie having an existential crisis 1 minute into the video has become just par for the course
You know it’s bad when even Charlie has to give DKOldies a God Slap.

Nostalgia hurts the most because I was happier then, times were simpler then. Also my mom and dad were healthier and younger then now they're old and sick. My grandma has passed recently and now I have joint pain when approaching into my 30s. We have our whole life to be adults but have very little time to be a child.

I'm bearly an adult, but I need to think about my choices in the past. Doing stupid shit in school could have gotten me labeled as a loser with no hope in life! How could a kid end up with that responsibility? Well we all have it. No matter the age.
