Hey, as a member who has been in the Echo VR community since the beginning, I completely agree. This could not be more outrageous because I’ve played video games my whole life and I’ve never come across a game with the perfect mesh of sports and video games, this game made me meet some of my favorite people in this world and I’ve made money off of this game. The game is most definitely not dead. I search for a public match and get one in less than 30 seconds. All that to say I am sad I may be attending my last LAN event this Spring. Thank you for making this Charlie

it wouldn't. they don't give a shit, all they care about is number go up. actually good people at the top are very few and far between in the corporate space because they get chased out of the place before they can get to that rank most of the time and the shitty people get rewarded cause that's how the system is designed to be like, prioritize short term profit.
First of all, such decisions are not even made by CEOs. They are under the commands of investors to ensure the finances are well. They don't care about this because it is frankly none of their business.
not different at all, are you familiar with the concept that money is what makes the world go round? unless theres a financial incentive to follow popular demand or watch these videos or do literally anything at all they aint doing it bud
He left for a reason. Facebook trying to turn VR into the next frontier was a failure and a joke from the outset. A side-gig at best, not the final crescendo. Meta is FINALLY listening to the investors dumping their stock like it's hot lava because for some reason, people don't want to invest in a company that's bleeding money like a waterfall. Nobody should blame Meta for ditching VR, they should blame Meta for trying to sell it as aggressively as they did in the first place. Otherwise it would've been a happy little side-venture of hobbyists doing their own thing.
As one of the very first Echo Arena players from back in 2017, and as someone who's watched you before you even did a face reveal, holy crap, thank you so much for giving this visibility. I've been gaming my entire life, and I can say that games and communities like Echo Arena are one in a million. The base is ridiculously dedicated and passionate, and it's become so much more than a game to us. It's seriously become a home, a family, and a sanctuary to thousands of us, who've been playing it for an upwards of 6 years now (going back to PC release). The main comp league alone has ~4000 active users across hundreds of teams. Last year alone, I went to ~10 Echo LANs+meetups across the country. This game and community saved my life, and saved so many others. Now we want to do all we can to return the favor, and save it. Thank you, cr1tikal.
The fact how he only talks about numbers is so telling to the true nature behind the decision. All he cares about how much money it’ll make him and to him it’s just not enough. And I don’t think people should be like that should be in charge of creative decisions like this; it’s so upsetting to see people crush everything just because they don’t make enough money off it. Wasn’t aware of this until this video, and my heart goes out to the community for Echo VR. It looks like such a fun game and it’s awful to see such a passionate community get let down by some boz(o) who’s just in it for the money. As someone in the arts, it’s so hard to watch creative projects that are loved by many to be shut down for such selfish and out of touch reasons. If there’s a way we can make a change to this decision, please let me know
There's nothing wrong with wanting a profit. The problem lies when that becomes your whole personality, like you're a zombie to money. Even if I could afford a Lambo, I'm just going to think about that guy that says that you life is wasted and over if you haven't earned one while you're in your 20s. Or that guy that thinks a millionaire is poor. That stuff should be appreciated, and if you worked hard for it, good for you. But to tell someone to be insulted because they could only afford a new Corvette Stingray and not a Bugatti, is not someone that I can get along with. Cardi B stealing wallets because her six figure salary as a stripper couldn't pay the bills, is not a good role model and shouldn't be praised.
R.I.P. Echo. My most played VR game all time. I met so many absolutely amazing people playing this game, and am so honored to have been apart of this great community. Guess I’ll go play my last games, good luck everyone!

In terms of VR, there’s simply no product as close to the Quest VR product quality. I hate Meta company as a whole and I wish more companies took VR a bit more serious, sadly it seems only Meta is taking VR serious.
Been playing echo since before the quest 2 was even out, and it’s been a place for me to escape, relax, make friends, and create memories that will last me a lifetime. Boz has no idea what he’s done, and we’re going to make sure he never fucking forgets. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for covering this story, this game means the world to me.
I don’t think Boz understands VR. Not many people play VR. So that many consistent players is pretty high for VR. Also they are having LAN events with prizes?! That’s the first time I’ve heard of a VR scene that big
I love how companies just hire people to fill corporate positions in industries they know fuck all about but ask for years of experience from entry level hires.

And also putting food out so the rest of the ants leave the mound and then pours molting Alluminum in the hill. Then telling the ants to stop thinking about themselves.
It’s crazy that the zuck will say things like “we want to get ahead in the vr space” and then throw away the only thing they have going for them. Essentially the largest vr esport game, is on the leading edge of the “vr space”
I've been playing echo arena for 4 years now. To say I'm experienced with the game is an understatement. This game is like no other. The movement alone is completely different than the standard and it really is a showcase on how great VR games can be especially at VRML Esports level. On behalf of the echo community, Thank you for bringing this to the light.
Haven’t played as long, only for about a year, but 100%. It’s a massively fun game, and really shows the capabilities of VR gaming as opposed to social VR (which I’m still a big part of) To see it shutting down is probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen

You underestimate your power. If the community bands together to fight back, you can force these people to backpeddle. It's happened with dnd, it happened with Netflix. We can do it to Facebook.
@@callmequaz9052 It happened with dnd because they faced huge backlash from most of their current customers, for a plan that might bring more. Netflix is the same shit, current users hated the change enough, that their potential loss/gain ratio wasn't good. The whole facebook vr thing is already a financial disaster. You could bankrupt a AAA game studio with the amount of money they lose. And it doesn't mean squat to them, but why would it? They make sooo much more money. It's the same thing as Valve games, dealing with little games making some money having some 10k players is waaay below them. People at Valve have some passion for their games, so they keep them chugging along. People at facebook don't.
I have spent almost 5 years of my life dedicating a lot of time to this esport because I believed it would not only make it big, but it was also an extremely fun game that a lot of people would have enjoyed playing. I have met so many of my closest friends on this game so thank you so much charlie/moist. This means so much to not just me but all of the community and we appreciate the support. Why is it baffling? I get that it's a bummer but these kinds of things should be expected at this point imho. It's a shame but businesses like Meta don't and will never care about the player experience or enjoyment. It's ALWAYS about the money, and Meta is "too big to fail" now. They don't care about stupid decisions like this because the c-suite doesn't exist in the same world any of us do.
@@leviathan1832 the weird thing is that this time it isn't about the money. the game doesn't have active development. It's just server costs and surely they could find a way to further monetize the game if they're really not making a profit. This game isn't dead, and even as someone who is pretty much numb to business decisions hurting gamers this one caught me off guard.
@@leviathan1832 It's baffling cos it doesn't make sense money wise either, they're harming their company with these decisions. And all they're gaining is the cost of running a few servers. It's negligible for a company like them. So it is baffling. None of makes sense morally or business-wise.
@@leviathan1832 It's not baffling but a pretty stupid business decision because they're losing a lot of potential. Having a working game + playerbase isn't easily reproducible and helps them to solidify in the space and to branch out. I’m really happy you talked about this, this issue is really concerning me. Echo VR was one of the best games on the market right now and it was essentially the first example of an entire new sport in VR. I have been playing echo for 4 years, and when they announced this shutdown, I- I didn’t even know what to do, I had spent over 1,00 hours in this game, over $200 on the game. And for all of this to be taken away broke my heart. But with you helping our cause we might be able to do something about this!!! Thank you from me and the entire Echo VR community
Thank you it means a lot! I think right now we are trying to get as many people as possible involved to send Meta a message so if you want to help we could use it!
thanks for the support lmao, its crazy rn how many people are involved/tryna get involved and we are still probably going to need more. Really hope this works 🤞
I played Echo Combat when it released and immediately joined the weekly community tournaments and made a team. It was really the first game I ever got competitive in and I haven't really since. It's truly been the single best multiplayer experience of my life. It's the perfect combination of concept, execution, medium (VR), and art style. Being in that game was like a second body and felt as intuitive as my own real body. The way you moved about zero g space was just sublime. It if weren't locked by oculus and were on steam it really would have blown up sky high.
as a competitive player it especially hurts to have grinded this game for so long, and be so close to a goal of one of the best, just for the game to shut down in the end. And no doubt this sentiment is shared by every other competitive team, which also extends to new players which grows the scene even more. It really just does not makes sense to say it is dying.
Although I've never played the game myself one of my friends competes on one of the top teams in Echo and it was so sad to hear how devastated he was to hear that the servers were shutting down. Its horrible to see how the game that he plays competitively got ruined by one person in charge. I'm hoping for the entire fanbase that something works out in the end, no matter how unlikely.
As a ex Pro Echo VR player I thank you for recognizing this situation. Echo VR changed my life over the years I played it pro and I made so many great friends in there. I don’t think Bos will let us win the saving battle unfortunately. I have hope but Meta seems to really want us gone. Thanks Charlie, keep up the great content!
As an ex-Ready at Dawn dev, I know this is devastating news to the team. They were always active in trying to keep new events going and a stream of new content coming in. I don't doubt that Meta has shuttered this to make a talented team work on trying to keep Horizons from drowning, instead of focusing on actually making games. My heart goes out to the team. Also, there are the PC stand-alone games that I can't imagine would get pulled down - they don't require online components or a server. Give them a try if you haven't - Lone Echo and Lone Echo2 they're really fantastic VR games.
This is pretty sad. I’ve never had more fun interacting with a community like I have with Echo. Between talking and joking around with your teammates and opponents in a game and playing made up mini games with the people in the lobby, there’s nothing like it. I remember that this kid showed me and this other guy how to play air hockey up in that vent area in the lobby and a 2v1 turned into a 6v3. Just a bunch of different people cramming themselves into this little space just to take turns chucking the lobby disk towards the other vent opening while joking around and talking and some of the kids even trying to flirt with one of the girls playing. I can’t even find a word to describe how it felt to be a part of that, especially never being social growing up. And that story was only one of dozens that I have playing that game. I hope we don’t see it go. There’s something special about it that I wish everyone can experience.
Trying to find out if Charlie is being sarcastic or not in his intros is a challenge within itself and it's just one of the many reasons why I love this channel.
I think this is happening because meta is pushing VR to be business oriented. Their new quest pro is meant to be for meetings and now they are removing games to "improve the experience". The problem is that this won't happen. The older people that go to meetings very often struggle to set up a nickname on a zoom call. Now tell them to pair the VR controllers, set up an account, avatar, download a game, join the correct room and troubleshoot a few problems. On top of that noone will be the only goofy VR face in a zoom call. Everyone would be questioning your cartoon look instead of focusing on the meeting. There is not going to be a breakthrough unless every single person in the meeting is going to have an expensive headset.
Echo VR has already made its comeback, there are people who broke into the code and created a way to play with people online with a mod, but this is ONLY FOR PC at the moment, as it is a mod.
The games just felt really off since it came back and the community will never be able to grow as easily as it would before. Any esports going on would be a potential legal issue too and it made up a large part of the community
I just started playing this game because I got an oculus for christmas. I’ve got to say it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. The community is amazing and the love for the game is off the charts from the users still playing. I really hope that there is a way we can keep the game alive because Echo VR is that game that I go to when I don’t know what to do.
I’m a 2017 player and I never could have thought a game like this could get torn down so easily by any company They waited to tell us till the very last second after the store timer went down and they rinsed out as much money from us as they could Thank you for making a video on this
I know man, and I was really pissed how they didn’t give anyone else the chance to get combat. I wish RAD would’ve made it free at the very least, but now no new players can play it
Thank you for covering this, I've spent 1000s of hours and 100s of dollars, and there throwing it away slobbering for more money. "Meta" doesn't care about the consumer. It's enraging I can't do it anymore with them
I've been playing Echo since the Oculus Quest beta. I grinded to level 50 that Summer. My teamwork and movement with my friend improved exponentially. We ended up making 2nd place in the Sunshine Cup. No prize, but the people I met and the mechanics I had learned. I still remember the matches with devs every once in while. They were great people. Charlie was the last person I expected to cover this, but I really hope that his influence can spread the fact that Meta doesn't care. They weren't even good before this. The only good things they have going for them are there acquisitions - Oculus, RAD, Rec Room, Beat Games, etc. I mean, can we really trust the same people that destroyed a committed, tightly knit community to create the 'platform of the future' with Horizons? Or to even innovate on their technology at all?
I'm so glad that Charlie is shedding light on this outside the VR community, Echo Vr was one of the best VR games and one of the most active on the platform

And if I see you in the arena between now and August (and beyond) I'll do my best to share what I know and help out any new players with a genuine interest to explore such an incredible game. i began playing echo vr on release. i have played with the top players, became a top player, and competed in multiple leagues/events. i truly believe that meta are money hungry gremlins. they began by cutting server costs, so all the servers would be horrendous. then, they just up and decide to end the game. sad how they’re ruining future potential, future friendships, and a thriving community that is inclusive. i have had probably the most fun in my life meeting people in echo and just messing around. thank you for making this video charlie, i had to do a double take because i couldn’t believe you spoke out for an old passion of mine. have a good day all.
I just went out and thanked all of my online friends I've played Echo with, it's such a shame we couldn't have played more, as most of us don't really have the time anymore. Thank you, for bringing the sad news, saved me from the big disappointment when I (or more) *would* have had time.
I had only played echo once but I literally had a dreams about it because the movement and gameplay was so amazing to me. I never picked it back up because the skill gap seemed too big but it definitely is one of the best vr experiences
Two things they could do: 1. Instead of shutting down the servers that run echo arena, dedicate the server to it. 2. Keep the game up, leave it how it is (no updates, bug fixes) and go work on another project
I am just as sad/angry as the community BUT it will be less likely that they will change their minds about shutting it down because they have already made the decision. There is a few things we can do in this short amount of time leading up to the shutdown like keeping our interest in the game by playing, keeping others interested in the game, and recommending this to other people in other communities. Good luck to you all on finding a new game if you don’t “abandon” vr after this is over and have a good day/evening.

This goes to show how Meta would not give two shits about what you care about, and will have no problem taking away what you enjoy.
Luckily the guy who made the modded version used for the esports matches will make it public so hopefully the community could find a way to keep set up servers

Companies should be forced to open-source the server code of a game if they're going to shut them down. It's so baffling that this keeps happening.

This justifies my train of thought that John Carmack was the only reason to have hope for Meta.
not when nobody listens to him
Although I've never played the game myself one of my friends competes on one of the top teams in Echo and it was so sad to hear how devastated he was to hear that the servers were shutting down. I don’t think Bos will let us win the saving battle unfortunately. I have hope but Meta seems to really want us gone.
Thanks Charlie, keep up the great content!

So many echo big shots in here wth
As an ex-Ready at Dawn dev, I know this is devastating news to the team. They were always active in trying to keep new events going and a stream of new content coming in. I don't doubt that Meta has shuttered this to make a talented team work on trying to keep Horizons from drowning, instead of focusing on actually making games. My heart goes out to the team.
Also, there are the PC stand-alone games that I can't imagine would get pulled down - they don't require online components or a server. Give them a try if you haven't - Lone Echo and Lone Echo2 they're really fantastic VR games.
I would love to play Lone Echo but I can't imagine buying anything from the Oculus store.
Lone Echo was a fantastic game thank you for your work on it.
Easy answer, just replace Horizons with Echo
@@EvilLefty W
Lone echo is one of my favourite VR games of all time. Thank you
Thank you so much for talking about this. Echo VR was definitely not a dead game and it had room to grow even larger as the VR space grows
I hope it’s not taken down either. It sounds interesting and I hope to try it one day
very well said, it was definitely an experience
Trying to find out if Charlie is being sarcastic or not in his intros is a challenge within itself and it's just one of the many reasons why I love this channel.
K-pop better + I’m the ultimate k-pop defender ☝🏻☝🏻🤓🤓
@Patrick39 let me guess: your farts are stinkyer
@@-whyquestion bot 1 upping the other bot lmfao
Charlie mentioning Thrillseeker is the best crossover of the season.
hopefully thrill gets some of the same exposure tuv did
IKR!!!
i've been watching thrill for a while now so this is really cool to see 🙏
Yeah, I was stoked.
Crazy to see you shining a light on this! Massive thanks from the whole echo community
Absolutely, super sad to see this gem of a game go.
real
I've been following this situation for awhile because I play this game often. It makes me so mad what's going on and I appreciate you talking about it
You may appreciate him for talking about it but I do be doing pushups tho
I just started playing this game because I got an oculus for christmas. I’ve got to say it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. The community is amazing and the love for the game is off the charts from the users still playing. I really hope that there is a way we can keep the game alive because Echo VR is that game that I go to when I don’t know what to do.
I’m a 2017 player and I never could have thought a game like this could get torn down so easily by any company
They waited to tell us till the very last second after the store timer went down and they rinsed out as much money from us as they could
Thank you for making a video on this
I know man, and I was really pissed how they didn’t give anyone else the chance to get combat. I wish RAD would’ve made it free at the very least, but now no new players can play it
@@AT-mb1tm oh damn, I was planning on trying combat before everything shuts down..
Or to even innovate on their technology at all?
when he said "your favorite game being shut down" i had club penguin flashbacks
The fact that this dude worked for Vector Marketing is a huge red flag
I'm so glad that Charlie is shedding light on this outside the VR community, Echo Vr was one of the best VR games and one of the most active on the platform
I find the gameplay really good but the matches were full of kids which didn’t keep me playing
@@Me-dr7iy Yea I feel you there a good portion of matches do have kids in them, but I found a lot of really cool people through playing, of course the more higher-level lobby's I got in the more cool people I found👍
RIP this game. Although I never played it, I 100% sympathize with the Echo VR fanbase here.
I'm with the community and our only goal is to somehow get Meta to reconsider so Charlie talking about it is a big win for us
Real.
Nobody like that guy.
Realest
Hopefully Echo is kept up but knowing Meta they'll just ignore everyone.
Love having a mainstream TH-camr talk about the VR Community. Your voice carries a ton of weight, hopefully it can be a tipping point to get the game back 🙏
It won't. These kinds of people don't listen at all unless if they're losing a lot of money, and even then they may not even listen.
Sadly it wont be
You rule for covering this wild story! Thank you. Echo is a truly spectacular game. With 6 degree of freedom movement in zero-g, a nearly endless bag of tricks to learn along a steep skill curve, and an athletic/proprioceptive marvel... it's my favorite game of all time... and I've only played 4 months. This astonished admiration grew so quickly for me... I can't even imagine what it would feel like to be a 5+ year veteran with all that's been happening. But the deepest point - this is a canary in the coal mine for all of VR. So to anyone reading, give the game a try! Share this and Thrill's video! Sign the petition! And if I see you in the arena between now and August (and beyond) I'll do my best to share what I know and help out any new players with a genuine interest to explore such an incredible game. Thanks again!!
Damn...DAMN...the fact that he even admitted to "them being loyal" but that wasn't enough...that shit hurt worse than my work schedule.
i began playing echo vr on release. i have played with the top players, became a top player, and competed in multiple leagues/events. i truly believe that meta are money hungry gremlins. they began by cutting server costs, so all the servers would be horrendous. then, they just up and decide to end the game. sad how they’re ruining future potential, future friendships, and a thriving community that is inclusive. i have had probably the most fun in my life meeting people in echo and just messing around. thank you for making this video charlie, i had to do a double take because i couldn’t believe you spoke out for an old passion of mine. have a good day all.
I just went out and thanked all of my online friends I've played Echo with, it's such a shame we couldn't have played more, as most of us don't really have the time anymore.
Thank you, for bringing the sad news, saved me from the big disappointment when I (or more) *would* have had time.
Get a discord server going!
@@cloud9296 if he does I would join just for fun
Boz is the type of dude that brings the basketball to the game and leaves with it when he loses.
I had only played echo once but I literally had a dreams about it because the movement and gameplay was so amazing to me. I never picked it back up because the skill gap seemed too big but it definitely is one of the best vr experiences
Two things they could do:
I Love the fact that this is getting out there and that you are using your platform to help and spread it more. Playing this game for 3 years has changed a lot for me and having something like this happen because of a playerbases numbers is completely insane.
2:05 you can hear Charlie's dog screaming from the other room how much he hates the guy.
“Low tens of thousands” is *extremely* good for a multiplayer only vr game that isnt on Steam.
I'm absolutely so sad because of this, echo was my first vr game I took seriously, it brand the esports leagues to me and I've been playing in it for the past 2-3 years I'm so sad
im so glad you made this video. i owned a team for a bit and hearing that it was being shut down really broke my heart. i hope this video will be a good message to the people over at facebook.
Wow, this was my first vr game/first vr experience. It was so wild to fly around that space station. I didn't even play the actual games, I had too much fun in the lobby.
Wtf that was one of the best free vr games, it gave you a lot of freedom and trying to master the mechanics of the game was super fun
As someone who really enjoys Echo vr, and is really mad about it shutting down, I really appreciate you bringing this situation into the light. Meta/RAD have no idea what their doing. This goes to show how Meta would not give two shits about what you care about, and will have no problem taking away what you enjoy.
Thank you so much for making this, it means a lot to the Echo VR community
Luckily the guy who made the modded version used for the esports matches will make it public so hopefully the community could find a way to keep set up servers
3:33 facebook killed a vr game called "dead and buried" a year after this video, lol how appropriate
The main reason why echo got shutdown was to make the 10,000 people play a game with better monetization and they already gave up on echo they just wanted to forcefully move the players out of the game.
Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case
