I absolutely love the first solo
I learned the solo from 3:52 with this video. Sitting on my friends couch with an old guitar and just tried it until I could play it. My friend was impressed that I managed to lean this solo in 20 minutes.
Unfortunately he passed away last month, so this solo and this video reminds me of him.
Thank you for this video, because it helped me a lot with this song!

It's very very tight, and the best technique I've ever seen. My goal is to play like Mr.Tabs
Just an advice for new Metallica fans who come here for ST with the intention of learning this. This is not as easy as you think, in fact I think it can be considered one of the most difficult riffs in the entire Metallica setlist.
it took me 4 days of practice i got it nailed down already
It's the downpicking the entire song that makes it one of the hardest

The riff itself is pretty simple it’s just the downpicking that you have to do

I just found your channel last night and let me tell you something besides the fact that you are a top notch pro level guitarist and the fact that you are most skilled at helping people to fully understand what everything means as far as tabs go..you would have changed my entire life if we had youtube in the 1990s when I was 11 or 12. I grew up loving guns and roses the most and begged my parents for an electric guitar since I was like 7 or 8 every week. After the loss of a grandparent they finally caved and got me a cheaper Peavy guitar and amp that came as a kit. I had never played any guitar prior and I relied on a guy my mom worked with to explain in a note how to read tabs and what they meant. I never met the guy and it took me forever to understand how to play on my own without lessons. I played every night and day for over a decade and I could play some songs pretty well but I was always lost on things like pinch harmonics and some other things. Palm muting was easy to understand but solos stumped me a lot. I was born in 84 so I think I started jamming at like 1995 or 96. I gotta get both my electric guitars fixed soon so I can start catching up on the lost love of my life, playing quality guitar. Thanks a ton
Ps.. I forgot to mention how on youtube you can slow the speed down. It makes it perfect to see what you're doing and how to hit and time every note. Thank you for doing exactly what you do and please keep up the great work. Big thanks from Wisconsin
@@johnlarson4254I love to hear it! 🤘
You've done a far better job with the clean channel / pretty solo part and Lars' drum parts in that section than most. This entire song is etched into my psyche from childhood and I can tell if someone hits even one sour note. I've been playing this solo for over 20 years and your tutorial is literally one of the better ones out there.
It's very rare too find a tutorial channel that doesn't dampen down the content to make it seem less threatening and it's frustrating to progress so thank you for being honest
I really like how you play main riff starting at 0:23 Made me think about my technique. I never held 2nd finger down the whole riff and had quite bad time missing the note sometimes which ended in sloppy playing. Might try again using your way.
Same
I instantly noticed that!!
Yeah dude as soon as I noticed that I'm almost playing it up to speed after like 30-45min of playing that riff continuously. That's the secret to it for sure if you were struggling like me.
that 21/32 time signature is unbelievably accurate. Kudos to you sir!
how to count that?
@@j00mi grossly simplified, 4/4 Time signature means, you need 4 counts of 1/4 (quarter note) pulse for each bar, 21/32, means you need 21 counts of 1/32 note pulse for each bar, therefore to count that you can use 1/32 note 21 times for that exact bar. in this song case those bar implements 3 count 1/8th note (3/8) followed by 1/16th rest, lastly with 2 count of 1/8th note (2/8), totaling 3/8 + 1/32 + 2/8 using simple math to make it common denominator 12/32 + 1/32 + 8/32 = 21/32.
@@j00miYou don't, this is something you must feel
holy shit Hetfield ist doing THIS plus singing and it seems so effortless ...just mindblowing
Best tutorial, played, tabbed, and toned right, it is like a cover with tab. Very good job sir!
Perfect! I've been trying to play this song for a long time, but these picks down break me in half. Congratulations man!
I usually do not comment on vids. But DAMN!!!! Total respect. I’ve been playing for many years. I know the level of perfection in which you played this. Wow😯
Nailed it!! I learned this when it first came out. Trying to re learn it at 57 years old. Fantastic job my friend! I had to buy 2 records and probably cassettes because I ruined them trying to figure out what James was doing. Way ahead of his time. One of my favorite rhythm guitar players and song writers of all time. He just keeps getting better!
Ahh your guitar looks really nice. Im a big fan of metallica, this video helped me training the song
Make sure you don’t leave out the F note like I did lol. Everything else in the video is accurate, I like to believe so anyway. Cool to hear it’s helping you. Rock on🤘
My dude has the time signature and tempo changes too. Lifesaver for this cover i'm building in my DAW.
Been subbed from the time you had 20k subs and the channel's name wasn't Mr. Tabs
Really awesome to see your channel grow over time
And obviously, thank you for the perfect tabs you offer to us Mr. Tabs
5:52-5:54… you are spot on with that. You have no clue how many people on TH-cam get that wrong. Awesome job btw, rock on!!🤘🏻🎸🎶🎵
Ikr! There are too many people that just don't play it right, this is the first accurate one I've found. Also, how would you bend the note without a bar? I don't have one, so I'll have to do it by hand but I can't really figure out how to do it.
@@wowow8925you’ve probably figured it out by now lol. I usually just pinch on the 3 fret of the b and then the 4th with a high bend.
This is real.
Been trying ages for this piece yet never made it. Your video boost my adrenaline to try it again.
Bravo. Thank you this good tape.
This man has great skill. Such clean playing every video. Excellent content.
Perfect tone. On point. Sounds amazing. Great job brother
Excellent work here! Thanks bro! I've wanted to learn this for years!
First of How r u this good, and second I was trying to learn Master Of Puppets the other day and now it’s gonna be so much easier with the tabs thx and last thing I love all your videos, just watching someone be good at guitar and being able to read the tabs I love u
I'm the complete opposite it takes me 4 time long to learn a riff with tabs versus a video.i also don't remember as much. I think that probably why I stopped taking string in school.
That blow up fire effect in the background was dope as well! 👍🏽
that's why hetfield right hand is most important than anyone's else left hand....groove,timing,strenght,fury.well done!!!
As if Kirk stands still the entire song?
The time stamps for each section are extremely helpful, thank you so much!
Tried learning from other vids in the past but everyone says the tabs were wrong, this one seems really good, I’ll definitely give this song another try. Thank you man
Edit: I had already learned the solo and some other parts before this, so I just had to learn the rhythm parts, took me a couple days but I got it, excellent video
I really think you have the best guitar related chanel in TH-cam, keep making videos please!
The extent this guy went to to avoid alternate picking is amazing
Been playing for 20+ years, i can play this (alternativ picking) and now gonna try master this only down picking as it is supposed to be played.
You did this justice and your down picking is on a another level, James would have approved!
Great cover, tone & execution! 10/10
Love that he is really economical with his left hand. He doesn't have the crazy index finger that I've seen many do.
I just started playing 2 months ago and learning my favorite metal songs I've found economical finger placement and how they arranged most of the notes to not just compliment each other musically but they pick notes that are easy to switch to at full speed, are the secrets to playing them.
@@gentelmanjunkie542 wow I must say, you are unravelling secrets in two months? I've been playing 30 years and it's a never ending lesson.
Unreal down picking control. Most people don’t know how much picking hand stamina you have to have to do that right and cleanly. Most of us alternate pick that because we’re mortals. I had a question regarding the 12th fret walk down. I saw another video about a guy who always does Metallica based stories and covers and he said most do that part wrong and end it at the 2nd fret so they can hit the open low E and use that time to get back to 12. He said it a actually goes down to fret 1. It sounded a bit different but both ways sound good. Regardless, your way makes it sound more seamless when restarting at 12. Even if it’s wrong your way is the way I do it. The other way sounds forced and jacks up my timing.
you know how to down pick faster don't be a p@@sy beta
I only use downstrokes because I'm really bad at alternate picking XD
The correct way is to hit the 1 before hitting the open E string. There is an old video on TH-cam of Kirk Hammett showing the Metallica riffs and he definitely hits the 1st fret. I actually just finished watching that in slow speed.
th-cam.com/video/nGYwwvWiCi8/w-d-xo.html
Watch Kirk play it, he definitely hits the first fret to finish that chromatic run down. It makes it a little more difficult to play than what's shown in this video.
If you can't downpick this, you Just need to train it... Really, I downpicked this song before I could play its solo ... My first 2 years playing metal were more devoted to rhythm playing and a few easy solos, than only after this I started trying the harder solos... Maybe you skipped the rhythm training... Just train, It will be easy... And I'm not a good player
Learned to play this in the 90s when I was in the Marines. But just gotta say wow....that was a true master at work, great video, awesome job.
Godlike! Also, I do notice that all of people saying downpicking is easy, they don't have any videos of them doing it. At this pace, staying clean is very hard to do! Also, this is over an 8 minute long song. Even a song with alternate picking at this pace is hard at over 8 minutes. For those saying it is easy, prove it. Mr Tabs, what an amazing job and what an inspiration!!!
Hey man I just found your channel and I love your work. The format is really great for practicing and learning things faster. Your playing is also spot on. I just wanted to perhaps share an Idea which I would personally really apreciate. I'd love if you shared all multi tracked parts and rythym parts during solo sections. Don't change your playthrus but perhaps add the rythym parts for a solo after the playthru. Either way love your channel. This is really just adding something nice to stuff that's already great.
can you imagine Hetfield plays this while fucking singing like a master
I think kirk is the one who plays most of the solos
@@negatvecreep yes but the riffs are not easy either my dude.

End of passion play, crumbling away
I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear
Leading on your death's construction
Taste me, you will see
More is all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you
Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster

Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name 'cause I'll hear you scream

Needlework the way, never you betray
Life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster

(Master, Master)
Master, Master, where’s the dreams that I’ve been after?
Master, Master, you promised only lies
Laughter, laughter, all I hear or see is laughter
Laughter, laughter, laughing at my cries
Fix me!
Hell is worth all that, natural habitat
Just a rhyme without a reason
Never ending maze, drift on numbered days
Now your life is out of season
I will occupy
I will help you die
I will run through you
Now I rule you too
Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
