I think that bulge part might be called a "power bomb" basically a small chamber for pooling/slowing the exhaust gas for a bit before it's shot out of the muffler. To be honest I'm not the sure effect it does to the sound. Normally if you want higher pitch sound the muffler will be small or just run straight pipes..

The exhaust is SC Project CRT. I'm not sure what the color is called, I think it's OEM blue from BMW.
