We really need more of these. I honestly wish this could be weekly even if it were just audio and only 30 minutes. But I completely understand the difficulties of something like that along with both of your other responsibilities.

I started learning everything about MTG about 4 months ago, and I understood about half of what he said.
Also I've already come to the decision that I will never spend money on MTG packs. It took me less than half a year to hate Hasbro, and to an extent WotC, to its core and with a deep dreadful passion. Good job to them for that.

I skipped lunch my entire high-school time, traded, and worked crappy jobs to collect magic cards. I sold that collection to buy a home seven years ago. The moral of the story is to skip your lunch.

I opened a masterpiece Wurmcoil Engine in my prerelease packs that I sold to buy a Nintendo Switch. Now I have to spend $40 on a single pack to even have a chance of something like that.

Eldritch horrors beyond human comprehension are an excellent marketing strategy. Some people will think it's cool, others will find it so absurd that they buy it out of respect, and others will hate it because it's cereal.
Remember when in conspiracy 2 they made an Alt art Kaya? It’s worth $200. In $4 booster packs. Good times
When Vince goes on his rant about the warhammer decks being flavor slam dunks all I can think about is the mana rock with the mark of Khorne on it producing blue black. I can just imagine Khorne sitting in his study, examining some ancient and powerful magical text, petting his cat. Definite flavor slam dunk, 10/10.
Great video - I think you really capture the sentiment of the average player. I preordered the commander decks months ago assuming great henge would be in the product - only to find out its a 1 in 30 box topper only product. Their practices of making cards only available in select products in the line is predatory

The talk at 32:24 has been going on since Kamigawa. Go-Shintai commander and Yoshimaru, Ever faithful has the commander Logo and is said to be the commander decks if you google them, but they are actually only ever found in the Set boosters.
I know people love the UB sets and there are some cards coming out that have me legit excited but I feel Brian is more and more encapsulating my feelings about where magic is going.
Collector or bust really sums up how I feel about buying boxes now. As for the dominaria remastered collectors, I don't know if many people bought them. I just remember seeing them and thinking "too rich for my blood"
I definitely saw that the price for Blightsteel Colossus decreased after pulling one on the List for March of the Machine.

I'm that person that started playing MTG on Arena 3 months ago. This podcast felt like learning hieroglyph. The game is fun non the less
I can already see how the random guy at an lgs who got the one ring getting choked by his friend and then he, his friend, running with it while slowly turning into a foul creature.
The beginning bit was the biggest gaslight moment I've ever heard lol
I don't understand how Magic hasn't just adopted Pokemon's way of doing boosters. For those who don't know how Pokemon Boosters work, there is a cheap affordable version of almost every card and then you have a chance at getting alternate art versions of that card as well. For example, there's a Trainer card called Iono that's really popular. Regular trainer is about $4. The alternate art card has sold for over $1000. This is what makes boosters fun. You have game pieces that are affordable but there's a chance at a big reward if you open boosters. Magic used to do something like this with Masterpieces but they stopped and now they've cranked everything up to 11. Regular boosters aren't fun to open anymore. Collector boosters are kinda fun but they're so expensive.
The Prof totally understands when he says he was sold on Dr. Who after the Saga announcement, that's what we all want from Magic for our own beloved other franchises.
I think the unknown part is an issue, but it's why I love watching your booster box game videos. Something in my brain turns hearing about odds into white noise. I would rather than just see what they are when someone opens them. Obviously my box will be different, but watching your videos gives me the "feel" of the set.
I'm really excited to see that MaldHound is gonna be a guest in the next Shuffle up and play episode!

Vince is absolutely right on the "Special Edition" Collectors. There are several countries that requires you to publish the odds of acquiring any particular thing in a randomized game system. They can't change those odds later by printing more, so they print ones without the various serialized cards so they aren't getting into legal trouble with the odds of pulling The One Ring.

I agree with donating cards. I kept maybe 3 commander decks, and a few of my fav cards and just donated my stuff to a friend. He's gonna give the stuff to new players at the LGS.

As someone who has 1 tutorial commander game under their belt and is interested getting into MTG with the LoTR set, it's really confusing to know what I get for buying things (yeah I also recently got hooked on your channel too! Shuffle up and play and Dies to removal are soo fun)
Go with one of the LOTR precons and then if you want to play the booster box game buy a set booster. The precons will give you 4 playable decks to switch between.
Hearing Brian get worked up is very funny. You guys play off each other so well.
My great grandfather was a sailor who, for a stretch of time, was only home a few days a year. Everytime he would come back, he would find he had another kid.
It's actually pretty funny, the Prof's comment on the video he made 9 YEARS AGO opening that premium Shards of Alara booster was how opening boosters isn't worth it because of the increased prices.

Wizards did have a magazine with set list and current pricing, at that time in the early 90s. Oh yeah we knew what we could possibly get and completely agree with professor on this. Also in the same boat, I did get rid of my cards. I just got back into mtg 10 months and what a multiverse it has become.
About the Alara all-foil boosters: same experience here. I opened one up when I bought it in a store that had some collecting dust on a shelf. They were all flat and all in pristine condition. I still play some of those cards, just because they look that good. No pringle.
My “favorite” list pull was from Modern Horizons 2, where I got one of the common lesson cards from Strixhaven.

At the beginning, with Eldraine it was fun... It was exciting and new and fun to be a part of the game while that change was happening... Now the amount of product dilutes any fun we could have while opening packs.
For the spellbooks and commander collections, I am 100% convinced Commander Collection Black is just Signature Spellbook Liliana and Commander Collection Green is Signature Spellbook Freyalise. They just changed the branding so they could charge twice as much for the same thing.

Hey man I just came back t magic after years of not playing and I’ve fallen back in love with the game and your channel and I just want to say thank you for all the content over the years.
One other thing to consider is the possibility that "misses" don't cost WOTC that much relatively speaking. Like swinging and whiffing on Aftermath is a shoulder shrug. But swinging and hitting it out of the park with LOTR or Commander Masters is a massive, massive win. Like the cost to physically print MTG cards is near zero. Yes, there are licensing costs, and artist commission costs, but those costs are drops in the bucket relative to the sales of the products themselves.
Initially, collector boosters were fun. I opened a D&D collector pack the other day that had 5 mythics in a row! After the seeing the first three, I was losing my mind - I had hit the rarest lottery of a pack possible! The experience of pulling two more mythics after that was wild. Yet, each of those mythics were less than $3 per card. That experience went from sweet to sour, instantly.
And that seems to be the problem, to me, with collector boosters. Even when you win, you still end up feeling like you lost.

Vince's child is three months old, the Prof's in nine years old. Convert the units and we get 3 months to 108 months. Simplify the fraction, it's a 1:36 ratio! So, so to properly congratulate everyone involved: congratulations to Vince and congratulations x36 to Brian! This is proof that Magic: the Gathering and Tolarian Community College teach math skills.

Omg dude, my collection was stolen in 2002 at the end of high school. I’m 40, i must of had 12 duel lands, wheel of fortune, a bunch more wicked expensive cards. Got back into magic around the time of arena came out, or before that when magic duels came out, then crashed or whatever happened to it. Anyway, I found a store and play tournaments and commander (actually played a new commander tournament), love your channel Prof. Wish me luck on the LOR draft June 16 baby!!!!!!!!!

You just inspired me to me to invent a new format, commander shuffleable. You split your 100 card deck in half and just use the first half until you run out of cards to draw then add the second deck to your library.
I call it -- "Splitdeck"

Vince is so right about Pokemon boosters, I just struggle to care about magic because the boosters are so deliberately confusing. Just give me a draft booster that sometimes contains chase cards any day.

Prof's observation about Vince getting excited at the mention of Star Wars is really on point. I don't particularly are about Warhammer or Doctor Who, but the LoTR nerd in me loves the idea of playing Samwise with a reskinned Horizon Canopy.
Another really solid point, one by Vince, is that, while MTG IP Isn't as popular (outside Magic) as Warhammer, etc., the rules of Magic are awesome, so it makes sense that Hasbro would latch on to this idea of using other IPs to sell MtG cards.
There's still way too much fucking prodcut, though.

I was talking to a guy about Pokémon a few days ago, and he was bringing up how the tcg should maybe introduce different boosters like Magic and I had to turn into mini-prof to rant about why that would be NO FUN lol.
Even just seeing this vid on it I see how it has only gotten more confusing over time. The slide shows are so crazy to see, how could they make something so simple into such a labyrinth of options.

The Special Editions actually are special for LOTR fans, because it features art from the Brothers Hildebrandt, who did a ton of art for LOTR in the 70s and is featured on the packs and boxes. If it cost premium that's crazy and I'm not trying to defend a surcharge for that I agree the costs are already just ridiculous, just wanting to point out why they exist.

According to the article and Amazon stores the Special Collector Boosters do not get a Box Topper if you buy them as a box/display.
21:47 In reference to the flatness of DMR foils, I didn't praise Wizards because my foils weren't flat. They curled just like usual. I think the Prof just got lucky with his boosters coming from a better printer. I'm pretty sure the same thing happened to me with MOM. The foils I got in my Pre-Release Pack are as stiff as a board, no curling even after being left unsleeved. I think Wizards is using one or two better quality printers, but it's entirely random whether or not the pack you're opening came from one of them. I hope that Wizards transitions mostly or entirely to those printers at some point, but that would likely take effort and they don't typically like to do that
Listening to this has been hilarious. I don’t play MTG, but I like following some of it, and it makes me think I’ll need to take 2 years of college courses to know all about how MTG works.

Wotc/Hasbro realized that Mtg is the best designed game system out there, and it is easier to just keep the system and give us different "skins" than it would be to try to create a new/unique game system for all those other IP's.
I miss when I could pick up 1-3 packs at a game store, knowing the lineup of what will be there like what the prof said, and maybe finding something for my deck or getting stuff I'd wanna trade or make a new deck with.
As a lord of the rings fan I love the lord of the rings set as a magic the gathering fan I’m feeling screwed over. It would be great if the collector boosters could be drafted. If it cost 3- 4$ to print boosters packs they should be sold for something similar to the old msrp.

I despise the one of one ring idea as much as I love the theme. It's a literal golden ticket that Charlie Bucket isn't allowed to be in the chance for. If anyone is under any allusions that it's going to end up anywhere but with an uberwhale they are deluding themselves. It's a true reflection of how greedy this company really is. As much as the idea is wonderful, all they had to do to make it better was to put it in draft boosters too. Wotc says you are not invited to the table unless you're buying premium product.

I feel like the integration of Non-MTG Properties and putting them into the game is a way to kinda just say "Hey look!! It's *insert popular property*" but on top of that it gets people who would have never touched the game out of disinterest or simple lack of knowledge to look at the game and maybe start playing. I know that's how I got into the game, I played and still play many different card games but MTG was one that never interested me all that much. Then the DnD set came out and out of love for a game I already play I decided to read up on the cards and talk to my friends who play MTG about it. Now I've been playing for 2 almost 3 years and I'm really happy with the game and the way I got into it. When I see these sets come out with other properties this is how I see them, a way to reach new people.
