Since January? Lol. It's been over a decade since I bought any sealed product besides the CMD sets. WotC has just lost touch with its customers and to me, sealed product is just not worth it anymore.
Its actually got me buying more, because I usually only buy a percentage of sealed products for drafting, so more products overall seems to mean a higher amount that I'm interested in drafting

This is the only reason I have Arena installed. Convenient, free, and lets me play with other people for free in a legitimate way. Otherwise, I’ll grab cockatrice or buy physical cards. Digital anything is basically a fiat currency and just feels bad to have even more artificial limits on number of cards created. In the real world, it takes some effort to print cards, it’s paper that could have been saved but literally a digital card game could just increase an integer value and more cards suddenly exist.

That's what frustrated me the most, that even if the product collapses due to the mismanagement, non of the people responsible are going to face any real consequences. Even if they get hit by the courts for MTG being essentially gambling, none of them will go to jail, the company will just need to change to remove the gambling elements. And if they are in danger of real repercussions, well, all that money buys a lot of lawyers. So yeah. No consequences. The more product that gets released, the less and less and less I want to buy sealed product. I don't want to buy from the secondary market, but nobody trades these days and the only cards people want in a trade are dual lands. So secondary market it is. They need to re do the entire arena currency system and we need packs in game for packs bought at LGS. I would go buy a booster box at my LGS if I got a code for a 'booster box' of arena cards.
It really feels like Hasbro is trying to find out what it can get away with right now. They're throwing out as many products as they can and jacking up prices as high as they can to see how big they can blow their bubble without it blowing up in their face.

They should totally bring back Colorless pips. Having played a lot of Ugin in Oathbreaker, Colorless is a very flavorful method of deck building. Utility lands that make up for the fact you have no enchantments, incidental ramp to match your overcosted cards, etc. Colorless has an incidental color identity all its own.

Regarding the "too much noise" discussion, I'm with you guys on this. I brewed a goblin combo deck for pioneer and it's good but needs a few more card draw engines. When ikoria/ikormander came out I thought Species Specialist was a piece that would work great for the deck, and only found out when I slotted it into my decklist app (Bugko - highly recommend it) that it wasn't constructed legal
I disagree with Vince pretty hard on mangara. It’s not amazing but when compared to mono white card draw options that exist now, a good bit of the better ones being artifacts, he certainly makes the cut to be run in just about any mono white deck when picking your best 10-12 best card draw options
The more you guys talk about Arena, the more you guys sound like old men asking the kids to get off their lawn and talking about the good ole days with MTGO. Arena bugs and collection issue are to be expected. It’s still new and can be fixed. The most important thing you emphasize on the channel is to not purchase booster packs and buy singles instead. Same thing with Arena but you just craft them instead. You don’t have to buy packs. The system even offers free gold and tournaments were you can earn gems without paying a cent. you can even earn free booster packs just for playing.MTGO hasn’t done anything for their players to update their system and TIX force you as the player to spend money for events, drafts and anything else you want to do. Just because a new player base has been excited to play Magic because of Arena, doesn’t mean we should knock it down entirely. If it’s taking away a player base you want on MTGO because you have your entire collection there, you shouldn’t take it out on those that are enjoying the game in the platform they would like to play. The idea of greed is only if you allow it to happen, just like $99 VIP boosters and Secret Lair: Ultimate Edition

37:00 this is literally what is happening right now to me. I was in arena right when it came out, I fell away from it for a while, and now I tried to go back, but am struggling with exactly this problem.
Regarding Hearthstone: I played fairly casually for a few years and LITERALLY NEVER had enough dust to build a tier deck. I was stuck with budget decks for the entire time. December 2018, I reinstalled it for the first time in several years and was SHOWERED in "returning player catchup" items (loads of free packs, some free dust, etc). I was able to build a tier deck with that. If I'd *only* had my collection from back in the day? Still would be stuck with budget decks. Arena has been much easier to keep up with casually than Hearthstone. However, after extended breaks we *will* have a serious problem. There is nothing preventing them from doing the same as Hearthstone and dumping a load of "welcome back" packs on you if you've been away for too long. Will they? I sorta doubt it, but Hearthstone's model is not what I'd hold up as a solution.
I categorically disagree - dusting allowed me to keep playing when I couldn't afford packs. I think you aren't giving it nearly (if any) credit as a system.
They are giving us the DLC/Freemium model in real life now. Obscuring the costs being spent by putting out tons of product. Keep the hype train at MAXIMUM.
That is a great take, and one I haven't heard before, but I think it is probably true. You could always bench mark how much something cost based on a booster box or a booster pack, but now that mental reference point has shifted in people's heads and real currency has been converted into gems.
"Nobody knows what's what." Truer words have not been said. It's so hard to keep track of what comes where. Even with an M21 label on it, you never really know where it comes from. Could be from a booster, could be a Planeswalker deck exclusive. Who knows?!
I'm not playing Arena over MTGO because of the look, I'm playing because it's free to play. I've been playing since the closed beta. I've spent a total of $15 on it and I've been able to make tier 1 decks for every standard within a couple weeks of a new set coming out.
I quit standard because I don't what cards are legal in it or even which packs to buy to get the legal cards. Not to mention they aren't even creative enough to come up with new names for mythics. They just make Chandra # 14 and Teferi #7. And how does Mangara turn from a 1/1 Wizard into a 2/4 Cleric with completely unrelated abilities and lifestyle?? So stupid. I am waiting for them to make Shivan Dragon a Cat Planeswalker with flying and mutate onto a Shrine or Legendary land to give you plus 1 to your built in planeswalker emblems. It's too much. I miss the good old days when this game was still based of Dungeons and Dragons instead of Cats, Dogs, Humans, and Human Planeswalkers driving vehicles through giant cities on Ravnica #8. What happened to creativity? So sad.
André from the brazilian channel UMotivo built a mono green Ugin Ramp deck in less than 5 minutes in a livestream as a joke, and the deck actually performed well.
I like Ugin... But I also only play commander and my favourite, most prized deck is devoid of colours. Also on Magic being inherently an expensive hobby I had no problems playing magic and obtaining cards in 2015, 16 or 17 with very little income. There were things out of my reach sure but there was always options that were still really good. Now it seems like everything is equally more expensive. The cheaper options are not very effective in comparison.
The comment about magic online is total bullshit. Magic online always costs money to play. Magic arena is possible to play completely free. It's time consuming, but it's entirely plausible to collect a full collection with zero dollars spent. Freemium is still the future - Hearthstone can serve as a succesful example of that. The magic online system is not the solution.
Temples were already a junk rare thrown into the rare slot to make low value boosters. There's very few cases where a rare land couldn't be an uncommon. Lands are a basic staple of the game, and generally are only functional. Rares seem to be becoming purely and the only bomb cards. Rare lands ruins that.
I fell off Arena when Ikoria dropped, and just like Vince said, I'll probably never be able to get back in. It's not just that I'm losing time to rebuild my collection before the next set or rotation, but increasingly it feels like putting time and money into Standard is just pointless, especially online. I'm not having fun. I'm not meeting anyone. I'm not doing anything that I can't watch more skilled players do better. The gap between Tier 1 decks and Not-Tier-1 feels insurmountable. And the cost of Magic just keeps rising, and it's beyond what I'm able and willing to put in anymore. Whenever the pandemic ends and pauper/commander comes back in paper, I'll be there. If the economy on Arena gets changed, or the game's power level just creeps back down to manageable, we can talk. But beyond that, I've been priced out, financially and emotionally.
Once I realized that I have to grind to get the cards I wanted, even just the commons. I said to hell with arena, I already invested over a couple thousand in paper. I will spend the time to grind for something I already own and have better things to do or grind on other games.
There is a big difference between online and arena. In arena you can earn packs just by playing. You can’t have that and the ability to sell the cards. In online you have to buy packs or cards in the first place so it’s fine that you can sell them. If you could sell arena cards then the current pack earning system wouldn’t work.
I quit arena for a few months and came back and couldn't build one deck without buying a ton of packs. Got that one mythic wildcard because of Uro tho, so that was something 😶

Oh no, that conversation about going back to the game being difficult hit a bit too close to home. This is basically me right now, except I last played at the start of Eldraine. This grind might stop me from trying arena.
Google the code for the free packs, you will have enough to start. I quit magic 7 years ago and actually started buying cards again two weeks ago after plating Arena. I believe the planeswalker decks have a code that gives you the cards. So just buy them all for 50,- and you will be swimming in cards. Plus having those will remove the bad cards from your packs as you can only have 4 the same on mtg.

I just can't handle the fact that they changed the voice actor of teferi, hero of dominaria in arena. I hate that card and I hate hearing the lines, now I hate it even more to know that someone had to say those lines again only because the original voice actor was white.
My graphics are on low in arena, and it has frame drops and pauses. Meanwhile, games like Rise of the Tomb Raider run at a consistent 90+ FPS. Optimization 0
Hopefully it's not too late to change Arena economy... I can understand why that would be. I think they could introduce dusting for wildcard credits (maybe one rare gets you two or three upticks on your next wildcard reward) without any problems... I also think an update that allows trading cards between friends would be great, but maybe it is too late for that... My biggest dream would be for trading, dusting, AND for them to get rid of gems and just show IRL currency values but wizards would never do that... At least paper magic isn't going anywhere.
As newer player (September 2019) I have no freakin idea whats coming out in what, and when any of it is coming out. I also feel like the amount of product coming out results in feel bads for those who cant afford to keep paying for new releases. "Just buy the singles you want" ? Yes this is true, but doesn't stop the feeling of not being able to keep up with the 'new tech' coming to formats and constantly feeling like you're out classed because of a pay wall due to demand for cards to use in standard. I accept i could be off the mark here, just trying to give a newer players perspective.

They already fixed the arena reprint problem. The cards can't be opened unless all other cards in the set are owned. I know this video got made before that notification got out, but you could at least put a text notice, or cut the part out. Right now you're literally spreading misinformation.
17:30 - This is a good question. I think a Core Set should be a celebration of MTG; and thus should contain a remixed list of "greatest hits" with some new spices to keep things fresh. It strikes me that it would be nice to have something like a 3:1 ratio; 75% reprints, 25% new cards. Magic is deep enough that you can change themes (and tribes) of each set and pull largely from existing cards, leaving you to design new cards to (a) "Sell the set" (R)/(M)s, (b) bridge limited archtypes, (c) "new standard" replacements for existing cards that use updated/better wording and/or bring the slot in line w/ the metagame, and finally (d) fill in some gaps.
I mean, I also understand making it only reprints means less need for creative design to always be making new cards, and I’d like the hot new mechanics to be in a dedicated setting so that they all play well together.

I disagree with Vince pretty hard on mangara. It’s not amazing but when compared to mono white card draw options that exist now, a good bit of the better ones being artifacts, he certainly makes the cut to be run in just about any mono white deck when picking your best 10-12 best card draw options

The more you guys talk about Arena, the more you guys sound like old men asking the kids to get off their lawn and talking about the good ole days with MTGO. Arena bugs and collection issue are to be expected. It’s still new and can be fixed. The most important thing you emphasize on the channel is to not purchase booster packs and buy singles instead. Same thing with Arena but you just craft them instead. You don’t have to buy packs. The system even offers free gold and tournaments were you can earn gems without paying a cent. you can even earn free booster packs just for playing.MTGO hasn’t done anything for their players to update their system and TIX force you as the player to spend money for events, drafts and anything else you want to do. Just because a new player base has been excited to play Magic because of Arena, doesn’t mean we should knock it down entirely. If it’s taking away a player base you want on MTGO because you have your entire collection there, you shouldn’t take it out on those that are enjoying the game in the platform they would like to play. The idea of greed is only if you allow it to happen, just like $99 VIP boosters and Secret Lair: Ultimate Edition

37:00 this is literally what is happening right now to me. I was in arena right when it came out, I fell away from it for a while, and now I tried to go back, but am struggling with exactly this problem.
Regarding Hearthstone: I played fairly casually for a few years and LITERALLY NEVER had enough dust to build a tier deck. I was stuck with budget decks for the entire time.
December 2018, I reinstalled it for the first time in several years and was SHOWERED in "returning player catchup" items (loads of free packs, some free dust, etc). I was able to build a tier deck with that. If I'd *only* had my collection from back in the day? Still would be stuck with budget decks.
Arena has been much easier to keep up with casually than Hearthstone. However, after extended breaks we *will* have a serious problem. There is nothing preventing them from doing the same as Hearthstone and dumping a load of "welcome back" packs on you if you've been away for too long. Will they? I sorta doubt it, but Hearthstone's model is not what I'd hold up as a solution.
I categorically disagree - dusting allowed me to keep playing when I couldn't afford packs. I think you aren't giving it nearly (if any) credit as a system.

They are giving us the DLC/Freemium model in real life now. Obscuring the costs being spent by putting out tons of product. Keep the hype train at MAXIMUM.
That is a great take, and one I haven't heard before, but I think it is probably true. You could always bench mark how much something cost based on a booster box or a booster pack, but now that mental reference point has shifted in people's heads and real currency has been converted into gems.

m21 is my fav core set since m12. im really liking the reprints and hope every core set from now on continues as a reprint haven.
I'm not playing Arena over MTGO because of the look, I'm playing because it's free to play. I've been playing since the closed beta. I've spent a total of $15 on it and I've been able to make tier 1 decks for every standard within a couple weeks of a new set coming out.

I quit standard because I don't what cards are legal in it or even which packs to buy to get the legal cards. Not to mention they aren't even creative enough to come up with new names for mythics. They just make Chandra # 14 and Teferi #7. And how does Mangara turn from a 1/1 Wizard into a 2/4 Cleric with completely unrelated abilities and lifestyle?? So stupid. I am waiting for them to make Shivan Dragon a Cat Planeswalker with flying and mutate onto a Shrine or Legendary land to give you plus 1 to your built in planeswalker emblems. It's too much. I miss the good old days when this game was still based of Dungeons and Dragons instead of Cats, Dogs, Humans, and Human Planeswalkers driving vehicles through giant cities on Ravnica #8. What happened to creativity? So sad.

It is arena's eternal format which actually got some traction recently and seems to get played quite a bit.
André from the brazilian channel UMotivo built a mono green Ugin Ramp deck in less than 5 minutes in a livestream as a joke, and the deck actually performed well.

I like Ugin... But I also only play commander and my favourite, most prized deck is devoid of colours.
Also on Magic being inherently an expensive hobby I had no problems playing magic and obtaining cards in 2015, 16 or 17 with very little income. There were things out of my reach sure but there was always options that were still really good. Now it seems like everything is equally more expensive. The cheaper options are not very effective in comparison.

The comment about magic online is total bullshit. Magic online always costs money to play. Magic arena is possible to play completely free. It's time consuming, but it's entirely plausible to collect a full collection with zero dollars spent. Freemium is still the future - Hearthstone can serve as a succesful example of that. The magic online system is not the solution.
Temples were already a junk rare thrown into the rare slot to make low value boosters.
There's very few cases where a rare land couldn't be an uncommon.
Lands are a basic staple of the game, and generally are only functional. Rares seem to be becoming purely and the only bomb cards. Rare lands ruins that.
I feel no non utility land should be rare. Or even uncommon. Lands are a requirement to play the game. Stop holding people back!
Necromancy For Kids Seriously! Scry Temples are handy because Scrying is nice but it is nowhere near the same impact as other rares.
I fell off Arena when Ikoria dropped, and just like Vince said, I'll probably never be able to get back in. It's not just that I'm losing time to rebuild my collection before the next set or rotation, but increasingly it feels like putting time and money into Standard is just pointless, especially online. I'm not having fun. I'm not meeting anyone. I'm not doing anything that I can't watch more skilled players do better. The gap between Tier 1 decks and Not-Tier-1 feels insurmountable. And the cost of Magic just keeps rising, and it's beyond what I'm able and willing to put in anymore. Whenever the pandemic ends and pauper/commander comes back in paper, I'll be there. If the economy on Arena gets changed, or the game's power level just creeps back down to manageable, we can talk. But beyond that, I've been priced out, financially and emotionally.

Once I realized that I have to grind to get the cards I wanted, even just the commons. I said to hell with arena, I already invested over a couple thousand in paper. I will spend the time to grind for something I already own and have better things to do or grind on other games.
There is a big difference between online and arena. In arena you can earn packs just by playing. You can’t have that and the ability to sell the cards. In online you have to buy packs or cards in the first place so it’s fine that you can sell them. If you could sell arena cards then the current pack earning system wouldn’t work.

Google the code for the free packs, you will have enough to start. I quit magic 7 years ago and actually started buying cards again two weeks ago after plating Arena.
I believe the planeswalker decks have a code that gives you the cards. So just buy them all for 50,- and you will be swimming in cards. Plus having those will remove the bad cards from your packs as you can only have 4 the same on mtg.

I just can't handle the fact that they changed the voice actor of teferi, hero of dominaria in arena. I hate that card and I hate hearing the lines, now I hate it even more to know that someone had to say those lines again only because the original voice actor was white.

My graphics are on low in arena, and it has frame drops and pauses. Meanwhile, games like Rise of the Tomb Raider run at a consistent 90+ FPS. Optimization 0

I think they could introduce dusting for wildcard credits (maybe one rare gets you two or three upticks on your next wildcard reward) without any problems...
I also think an update that allows trading cards between friends would be great, but maybe it is too late for that...
My biggest dream would be for trading, dusting, AND for them to get rid of gems and just show IRL currency values but wizards would never do that... At least paper magic isn't going anywhere.
Paper magic is gone for a least 6 months minimum.

As newer player (September 2019) I have no freakin idea whats coming out in what, and when any of it is coming out. I also feel like the amount of product coming out results in feel bads for those who cant afford to keep paying for new releases. "Just buy the singles you want" ? Yes this is true, but doesn't stop the feeling of not being able to keep up with the 'new tech' coming to formats and constantly feeling like you're out classed because of a pay wall due to demand for cards to use in standard. I accept i could be off the mark here, just trying to give a newer players perspective.

They already fixed the arena reprint problem. The cards can't be opened unless all other cards in the set are owned. I know this video got made before that notification got out, but you could at least put a text notice, or cut the part out. Right now you're literally spreading misinformation.

17:30 - This is a good question. I think a Core Set should be a celebration of MTG; and thus should contain a remixed list of "greatest hits" with some new spices to keep things fresh.
It strikes me that it would be nice to have something like a 3:1 ratio; 75% reprints, 25% new cards. Magic is deep enough that you can change themes (and tribes) of each set and pull largely from existing cards, leaving you to design new cards to (a) "Sell the set" (R)/(M)s, (b) bridge limited archtypes, (c) "new standard" replacements for existing cards that use updated/better wording and/or bring the slot in line w/ the metagame, and finally (d) fill in some gaps.
I mean, I also understand making it only reprints means less need for creative design to always be making new cards, and I’d like the hot new mechanics to be in a dedicated setting so that they all play well together.
