As much as I loved HW1 and 2 back in the past, this one felt painful to play. I couldn't figure out if it's because I'm old now, I'm 58 years old now and it's over 20 years since HW2 but something about this one didn't feel right to me. Lot of the controls were not working, my commands to move the fleet around was being unresponsive. I felt the story was weak. Why do I get this feeling that a third party consulting group was involved? I absolutely do not recommend this game, I was very disappointed.

Aside from the story which tbh wasn't the worst thing ever the game is an absolute blast to play. The controls are actually quite intuitive, giving the players the option to use it as a first person camera with wasd controls or homeworld 2 controls. I literally learned them in like maybe 3 minutes?

@davidhong9112 I find that intriguing if the controls were literally not working. It's hard to believe. Perhaps you were having unintended unit behaviors? Most people don't understand grouping and formation movement behaviors. For example bombers in a sphere formation on aggressive will just hover around the ship they are attacking. While on passive in a different formation they will try to hide behind cover and make multiple passes.

The fact that there is a Captain, in game, giving orders, that isn't you, is a sign. The fact you have to fight him for the keyboard every five minutes is a red flag. They turned a sandbox into a theme park, and it just doesn't work here.

Not to be "that guy" but this is something pretty much all homeworld games do, they rip the camera to show you "whats important" in each mission. and the best part of it? its the same guy, "Intel" is the dude who rips ur camera away every homeworld mission.
I actually don't think there is a single mission in HW1 that doesn't rip your camera away from the player at some point. I know that in the second mission of HW1 there are at least 4 cutscenes and 2 moments of in-game camera ripping throughout that mission.
The difference is that homeworld 3 appears to be significantly more handholdy than any other homeworld to date in the (not even kidding) first three missions of the game. After mission 4 the handholding is reduced significantly as the game starts to open up, I believe only 1 cutscene is in that mission.

@@MrCoolguy425 - I have played them all. It goes deeper. In this game you have someone else directing your moves. Go here do this, Then here do this. They really do want you on a rail. In the other games they used the story to set up the lore. In this game they use it to move you from point to point. I'm telling you. It annoys the frak out of me. It's not the same. Deserts was like this, but in the end they gave you tool and objectives and let you loose. This game doesn't. Why is that guy constantly telling me to do, what is clearly visible in the objectives at the top of the screen? It's dumb! I'm not opposed to this play style. It just doesn't work here.

@@TheFreemanRetort To anyone reading this there are slight spoilers to the HW3 campaign, while Its not very good, you have henceforth been warned.
Ima be honest, i mainly tuned anything out of intel (i found him very annoying by mission 3) when I was playing the game except what was specifically stated in the top left objective markers. So its entirely possible that its more on rails than I recall during my playthrough. Though I do note a few missions in HW1 that were quite infuriating based on how limited they were, mainly the research base, and the asteroid mission. Funnily enough I actually preferred HW3s asteroid mission to HW1s because at least in HW3 it gave you some choices in how to go through the mission, and gave you other objectives namely to capture the carriers while navigating the asteroids which was much more entertaining than sitting there for 10 minutes while rocks just tried to hit you.

@@all41tja "Much more" is extremely subjective wording and I disagree largely on that. It may be more, or in different ways, but overall I found them similar. I have gone through and counted both cutscenes and ripaways (Cutscenes being whenever out of game footage is used, or if the camera is artificially focused on an ingame unit without any UI elements) and (Ripaways being whenever the camera is used to show objectives. For example when intel runs you through objectives in sensor view)
      HW1 MIS 1: 2 cutscenes, 3 ripaways
      HW1 Mis 2: 2 cutscenes, 5 ripaways
      HW1 Mis 3: 2 cutscenes 1 ripaway
      HW3 mis 1: 3 cutscenes 1 rip away
      HW3 Mis 2: 4 cutscenes 1 ripaway

      HW3 Mis 3: 6 cutscenes, 3 ripaways
Homeworld 3 mission 3 is by far the clearest example of this, and overall uses many more cutscenes throughout the campaign as compared to HW1, but uses much less ripaways on average.
In all honesty, I prefer HW1s way of doing exposition and the "ripaway" method as it still allows you to have situational awareness during the objective speech. Also HW1s voice acting, cutscenes, and story are leagues better than HW3 which played a major factor in my personal "annoyance" with the game early on.
For clarity, I did not actually go through and play the missions at this time, I used no-commentary playthroughs of each mission played at 2x speed. Additionally the remastered edition of HW1 was used rather than the OG.

It is like they are making Homeworld 3 into a live service game, offer a really basic short campaign and then pad it out with online stuff via the war game mechanic and release paid dlc for a year. This is the problem when people who do not care about the game get involved, they ruin the game's name for a money and it dies never be touched again. It is also made for a really an era where pcs were not that powerful.

This game is a cash grab!!! They are banking on the lineage of the franchise selling the game. Way back when, they asked for funding from the fans when the game was already funded. The reviews all seem to say its severely lacking. It's like they made a homeworld game with no soul, yes a very shiny homeworld skin but it is hollow. Add to that the pricing and the dlc aimed at online only tells me they just want to milk people based solely on the name homeworld.

I keep hearing reviewers so the gameplay isn't bad, it's fun. But it's just not. For anyone used to the originals the gameplay in Hw3 changes and dumbs done so much that the strategy and tactics have been completely removed and all the game play now is spam everything send to attack, repeat until you win.
The maps are so small you basically start right on top of the enemy, including in the campaign. The new cover system is cool in theory, but there is 0 point to using it because it requires micro control of your ships, but you don't have time to do that because the second you try your mothership is under attack because the ai always knows where it is (again because the map is so tiny 3 probes are all you need to have sensor over the entire map).
The ships ttk is ridiculously fast. Even a battlecruiser the best ship in the game can get blasted to shreds by a bomber squadron. They just wasn't a thing in Hw2. There is no more subsystems or subsystem targeting. The unit cap is really small, probably because the tiny maps.
The fighters don't even bother to dodge shots anymore. Hw3 added actual projectiles so they need to actually hit to deal damage unlike Hw2, which makes it even worse that fighters don't attempt evasion at all

The game sucks, not only does it diverges from the original story so much to the point The Hiigarans freaking abandoned Sajuuk with no reason at all because of "Unfamtomable Progenitors Technology" which is stupid reason btw, even AI-Generated Stories had better reasoning than this.
What's stopping the Hiigarans from reversing engineering Progenitors tech? When they even replicated the 3 Original Cores, and they even replicated the Progenitor Movers halfway through the game in Homeworld 2.
I was so disappointed when I saw the Khar Kushan used crude conventional ballistic weapons rather than Progenitor level energy weapons, I mean The Bentusi gave them knowledge of how to operate Proginators tech so it's easy to say before they disappeared The Bentusi probably gave them their Tech for the Hiigarans to inherited their will.
Let's talk about the overpricing game and stupid promises with too many useless megastructures that became reliability than an opportunity, first off the game itself happened in open space all the time and with a stupid overabundance of resources that spam building small and large ships to protect the motherships unlike the previous 2 games where the resources are limited and ships are expensive to build. Why bother hiding in the structures when the enemy can't even get close to our mothership, if they did they ended up blowing seconds later. where was the hide-and-seek guerilla warfare they promised? The story is too short as it is stupid and seems unrelated to the previous game.
Then there's the cliche where Karan and the Incarnate Queen Far Jump into the unknown with the Progenitors Gateship using the Original Cores, I mean the heck too many Hiigarans, Vagyr, and even some Bentusi died just to safeguard or get the original cores just to reunite them with the Sajuuk then, only for Homeworld 3 to removed them and put into an inferior Mothership. Why not build more Synthetic Cores if they already had the capability and replicate the original cores in the first place. I mean whoever wrote the storyline in Homeworld 3 has probably been an idea generated in CHATGPT.
Then let's not forget how easy and overabundance is the resources in the game are that u can just spam build ur fleet without having to worry about running out of resources to build.
To be honest I felt Homeworld 3 is just a Homeworld spin-off with better quality and better graphics, for short a Homeworld Remastered/Remake rather than a sequel because it is a downgrade to the previous 2 games both Storywise, Lorewise, and Gameplaywise.

Well folks I have been playing HW from the beginning and it is my all time favorite. That game took me in deep submersion and I had control and I could take my time and play.
The whole game was amazing and the deep space was like really being out there, and the music and the dramatic scenes.
HW was ahead of the curve when it came out, I have played 1 and 2 so many times that I still get enjoyment of it.
I really was excited on HW3 coming out because I just knew they were going to make it just like of old but better , boy was I wrong, at no time did I get immersed in this , if you want to call it a game, even the animation was not up to par.
I had no control over nothing, but to listen to two idiots telling me what to do.
You could have left her story out and let me run my ship and follow orders without all the cinematographic, and interruptions.
I have only played one level and it is so boring, and im so tired of listening to the guy tell me what and where to go and when to do it. there is no time for exploring or getting more resources.
This game has no real content to it.
I heard that they let go most of the original folks that were there from the beginning that started HW, dont know if that is true , but I do know that this is not HW of old , its just another space shooting game.
I was a fool and payed 60 bucks for a game not worth twenty if that.
You folks that put this junk out apparently never really played HW form old, and that's because you were not old enough and still wearing diapers.
HW is a masterpiece and was ahead of its time and if you think this HW3 even comes close to the original HW, then you better go back and hire the original folks because this is not it.
The creative team here did not continue the story just created another one that makes no since.
It was a good story for them searching for a new homeland and fighting for survival in space.
I have ranted enough , but i do have a question?
Where does the player fit in, meaning if the girl tells the captain what to do , where do i fit in this as a player to make my own decisions.
I should be the captain and I follow orders according to what I have to face with and knowledge of and data and not follow stupid orders that make no since.
Anyway when the real HW comes out let me know, because this one is not even close.

I've been literally waiting for this game for twenty years, since Homeworld 2 was released in 2003. What i loved about Homeworld 2 is the tactical depth the game had. It didn't bother me that it had just 15 missions, but i loved it because of the tactical depth. It had a massive multiplayer fun factor. That is gone with Homeworld 3. What gave the game a tactical richness was the subsystem mechanic. For instance, you were able to destroy a BC main batteries and drive or DDs drive with strikecraft and escape with a faster CC or even take them on by out-manoeuvring them with frigates and corvettes. They have failed to keep the only thing Homeworld 2 exceeded in term of RTS. Honestly, im really disappointed. It feels like Homeworld 3 is just a graphically more contemporary polished money grab to me.

This game as a cash grab. I feel cheated for buying it and the fact that there will be no more single player campaign content is infuriating. And then the won't let us truly mod it. I think the modding lock down is due to them not wanting modders to create new content from other Sci-Fi IP's and because developers want to charge tons of $$$ for their own crappy content. This is such a disappointment, and is the reason why the Homeworld Remastered Collection still has more players.

I should point out that my jaw dropped when I saw how bad the squadrom movement is. Homeworld 1 had much better movement. This squadrom movement and engagement makes no sense at all. It feels stiff and there seems to be no real unit independence like it was in previous games. I remember watching fighters fights in old homeworld games since they were so interesting. Maneuvers of experienced pilots were so cool to watch and cooperation in squadrons was really engaging. Here what i see is them just flying in specific formation and doing absolutely bonkers rotations etc. Look at 3:42 the most left squadron turn. Absolute trash. That is now how ships fly in the space .. but its exactly how you turn a square in space.. so those squadrons are just flying squares with animations. Looking at this I would say this game is indie game levels right now. Based on length and gameplay maybe 10 USD worth ?

Decided to skip it and wait few years, until all the content is published and then I will buy it on sale ;-P. This is my opinion... Just buy the game on G2A for $35. I did that and it was the $90 bundle. This game is worth it for the $35-39, but not worth $59.
This game is also clearly geared towards online play. Season pass. I don't understand why anyone had expectations for a campaign when you saw season pass and the roguelike game mode.
The video is correct in this way. The base game price is terrible because there simply is no content to justify it. If you do like I did, however, and spend less than $40 you can kind of get value out of it. I did say "kind of get value" because you're only going to get that from the online play and the mods (for online or roguelike).

Kind of funny, the $90 version of the game on g2a has went from $35 to $45 within the last hour when they had I think exactly 87 copies when I bought for $35. 87 copies have already sold and we're at the $45 tier with right now as I type 517 copies. BTW, the base game version on g2a is equivalent to the $90 steam version.

The gameplay is not good at all. Units prioritize saying in formation over following orders or attacking. Your units are actually more effective and responsive if you turn off formations. Something that quickly becomes annoying as you'll find the game automatically puts units in formation without any input from you. Controls are absolutely terrible. Things outside your drag select constantly get added into your selection. You are forced to use their new first person camera instead of the classic free orbit camera when not focused on a unit and it makes navigating the battlefield annoying. If you have mixed units in a group, only the lead unit's action appears on the action bar. Retire and scuttle are in a hidden menu, *RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER,* and there is no confirmation for scuttles. Later on in the campaign, you need to get rid of excess units to be able to build the new units and the game never tells you how to do it. Unit AI is atrocious. If there wasn't a pause button, the campaign would be nearly unplayable on anything but story difficulty as you have to babysit your units constantly.
