It really gave me hope for HW 3 being awesome when and if it came out, then we ended up getting this. I don't know what went wrong, if it was publisher meddling, ineffectual management, or uninspired direction, but it lacks a soul. Don't tell me that the creative minds behind the franchise couldn't come up with anything better over the course of nearly two decades. Sad to see this being probably the last entry in the franchise, and even if it turns out not to be, we've already been cheated on and this relationship will never be the same.
It does suck because Homeworld is one of the all time great RTS franchises of the PC platform and this just wasn't what people expected. I really wanted to get into the wargames mode and play some fun and challenging cooperative battles there and it just plays in such a bland and uninteresting manner. The AI being so basic the only way the mode is challenging is to send infinite waves of enemies at you from all directions to artificially create difficulty. A real shame overall.

True, but comparing this to even the remasters which Blackbird worked on to begin with, they are superior. I don't really get why they couldn't have made this title with all the tried and true mechanics of Homeworld 1&2 but with more new shiny bits to make it a worthwhile product.
@@CriticalRocket Societal decline, that would be why. Almost total decadency, with the inability to create something worthwhile that is original. About the only thing developers can be expected to do somewhat competently for the moment is to rehash or remake something that was created through genuine passion in the past. Even then with all the hard work done of formulating the original ideas and basic framework of the game, they managed to still mess it up like in HW3's case. Just a sign of the times.
@@CriticalRocket i think it was due to technical complexity. A lot of the mechanics are pretty difficult to program in such as true ballistic projectiles and the different pathing behaviors for formations/stances. The code in the remasters is probably too difficult to port to Unreal, so they probably did a lot of it from scratch which is why things are so basic. Games nowadays are much more difficult to program because they are held to a higher standard in terms of graphics, audio, qol, accessibility, etc. options as well as a huge collection of third party software like video capture, mod support, steam, twitch, and develoer tools that they use. Thungs are a lot more complex in terms of the environment games need to integrate with, leaving less time, budget, and thought for the core game. Then you add in the desire to appeal to a wide audience (casual gamers), and you need to design a simple, fast-paced game to cater to them. If SC2 can get away with no subsystems and just a HP based system of hard counters, then surely HW could as well, some MBA undoubtedly thought. It's a lot more complex than just "societal decay". All software is getting more complicated because more is asked of it than ever before. But, that's just from a technical game development perspective. The narrative design flop was 100% due to societal decay. People were put in charge who should not have been seemingly purely due to social and ideological reasons, which was conscious strategic sabotage of product quality.
I don’t know. I guess I just suck. I don’t get why everybody hates this but loves Sins of a Solar Empire 2. I’m waiting on somebody to mod the game to actually add song content. Everybody wants the same game as the last one in this genre. I read an article in PC Gamer that that said the RTS genre is dead. Well I know how to give it a shot in the arm. Just go back make the same exact game as Homeworld 2, or Dawn of war 2. Yay.
Not true. Sins 2 does quite a few things differently. But that the thing when reviving an old franchise: it should have some differences, but not be TOO different else why does it still bear the same name. If your game ends up as "same as the previous title, but more and prettier" you have a winner. Meanwhile new titles should be where you go wild instead. Sins 2 may not be different enough from the first for some players, but its undeniably Sins of a Solar Empire. Meanwhile Homeworld 3 looks like they just put Deserts of Kharak in space. Its homeworld-themed, but it doesnt feel like a homeworld game, not any more than yhe mobile homeworld game did (before they killed it, with homeworld 3 following it in the grave after a last insulting DLC release... New factions you cant even use in skirmish, and one of them having a grand total of ONE ship that matches what they had in Cataclysm)
You didn't mention cataclysm! The real hw2, hw2 is actually hw3 and hw3...shouldn't exist. Correction, it should exist but as a homeworld game, not this shit.
From the time i play through the xtrem short campaign and recognised how boring empty this game with scirmis and multi mode just let there and uninstall. There are no completely different factions. The campaign can only be played with one race with ONE FACTION!!!!! and is so short and boring it's worthless. The controls are not user friendly. Uneasy ships with boring weapons. The player doesn't even know where they are in space, I don't even have the feeling of being in space because the huge structures are like playing on earth. A hat of garbage without good content. Good graphics is worthless without good story and content. They could learn from the Sin of solar empire.
I have been waiting until the Kalan pack to give them the benefit of the doubt and they just haven't made the progress the wider community expected, especially given the high cost of the game and how they could have made something really memorable. It sucks to make a video slagging it off, but I also don't think people should be asked to pay that much and get something inferior compared to the previous games in the series.
It's sad a thing that the data miner found an earlier version of the game that is much more like what the fans were expecting
That sounds interesting, I need to look that up.
If that's the case I can't say I'm too surprised. They hired people specifically to rewrite elements of the game to make it "marketable".

I honestly think most of the blame can be but squarely at gearbox's feet. This whole thing feels like corporate meddling
This game is a joke. It's ruining the whole franchise, somewhat like Homeworld mobile...
Oh a hot take.
