Maintaining My Curly Ends | Sisterlocks Journey

  • One of the questions I get asked often is "how do you maintain the curly ends on your locs?" The answer? I don't. I leave my hair alone 99.9% of them time. My curly ends are still curly because my hair texture allows it to be. My hair texture is not only fine, with a regular/average density, but it is also soft. That means that my hair will loc at a slower rate than the average woman with locs and I am fine with that.
    I decided to experiment with my hair, (because let's be real, this is an experiment. No one told me to do this and I do not know what the outcome of this will be lol ) and see what a little conditioner on the end of my Sisterlocks would do to my already visible curls on the end.
    I am happy to report, it gave EXACTLY what is what supposed to give (in my humble opinion. lol.) Let me know what you think!
    As always, thanks for joining me on my thin hair/ fine hair Sisterlock Journey / loc journey!

    I was on the edge of my seat for this one!! I think it came out great looks “refreshed”. When you got the comb I’ll admit I was nervous 😬 but I love how you showed us the ones that are trying to lock not to comb those out. I have some that look like that too. What a great video!! 😊❤️

    No, it's not all in your head. There was a marked increase in curliness at the ends after you applied the conditioner. Your locs are really beautiful either way. I am 14 months in with diy braidlocs and at first I tried to maintain the curly ends by applying conditioner each wash day but I found it was very time consuming so I've decided to leave my hair alone and let it do what it will.

    So the other day I put shea butter on my ends. Initially I tried to do every single loc individually, but then I did it by sections with the same length. I haven't replied since putting the butter in. It's been about 2 or 3 days. I also haven't refreshed yet.
    I've had my sisterlocks since June 17th, 2021. I left my buds alone. I have always wanted to have loose ends because that's what I always saw when I looked up sisterlocks. I didn't realize they're supposed to bud at the end, lol.
    Initially, the girl who colored my hair left me with heat damage for the first time since I went natural in 2012. Fed up, I immediately found a consultant and the rest was history.
    My favorite part about my locs is the amount of time it frees up for my professional life. I have a traumatic brain injury and it hurts to manipulate my hair around the nerve damage, so not being in it every day is helpful.
    I didn't use a comb like you did, I used my fingers. I'll also do an ACV rinse to prevent build up from the shea butter. I'll try some of my leftover conditioner from my loose days next time. 😊 Thanks for sharing.
    P.S. I have approximately 368 locks so we're right in the same ballpark! I decided to look up ways others maintained/prolonged their curly ends because mine were starting to look unkempt (and I don't mean the buds. I mean the loose ends looked terrible.) So again, thanks for sharing.

    First let me say, I love your videos. I’m 2 1/2 years in my journey. I have soft fine hair as well. My ends are curly too. I still braid and band on shampoo days. No combing or conditioner though. My ends are still closing and they are doing great. Combing interferes in the locking. The matting on the ends is the locking. Trust the process!!

    Thank you for sharing. I have to admit that I "tampered" with the ends of my locs. I didn't like that so much of my ends were loose. I braided the ends of my locs. They would unravel and the ends would curl again. But I didn't want to have large bunches at the ends of my locks. I have tight zig-zag pattern on most of my head and some coils at the top. Now I am locked for 13 months. Most of the ends are trying to close. I am happy.
    Your curls are cute, mine made my locs look like an afro! LOL

    • @tamiamyourfavoritedragon8890
      @tamiamyourfavoritedragon8890 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh! The loose hair at the ends of my locs were also "marrying" and trying to join the locs nextto them. LOL

    • @TheRealKylaB
      @TheRealKylaB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That makes sense. A lot of people braid the ends because they don’t like the loose hair either. The most important thing is that you’re happy with your hair. I didn’t want loose hair on the end originally, but it grew on me. Lol

      The unraveling is common with microlocs. A sisterlocks loctician would create a nest where your loose hair starts. It would be far less likely to unravel.

  • @kenishaadderley3092
    @kenishaadderley3092 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Did your Loctician originally leave a lot of your ends loose during the establishment? Or did your ends unravel? This is Day 2 for me and I have curly ends but they are not as high. Wondering if I should try the conditioner and comb this early.

    • @TheRealKylaB
      @TheRealKylaB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes. She left a good amount of my ends unraveled. I had a lot of split ends. You should definitely leave the conditioner alone. Lol. It’s way too early.

    So is it ok to have loose ends and not have your Loctitian close them down more? I was told that it would make the lock look too fat on the end but i don’t know if it would really make a difference

    • @TheRealKylaB

      It varies from person to person. Everyone has different hair, and therefor you everyone’s hair reacts differently. My locs are 4 years old now. I think they were 2 in this video, and my ends are not fat. At all. Lpl

    How long did this take you the first time around to complete this? It seems like it would take longer than 1-1.5 hours.

    • @TheRealKylaB
      @TheRealKylaB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is the first time I’ve done it. It took an hour / 1.5 hours to condition the ends and lightly comb them. I didn’t do much combing. A little more than half of my locs had some loose looking hair on the end. I only touched those. I didn’t time the washing of my hair. Only the conditioning and combing.
