Love "Run to You" because it's beautiful, love "Sing" because it's so full of energy and they had fans in the video, love "Water" because it shows off Kirstie's voice and is a unique vibe for the group, but Mitch's rap and sass in the Popspring version of "Can't Sleep Love" just feels like it characterizes the whole group's "see what I can do" love for performing when they're having fun

I love Kevin’s 💧 water drop sounds as part of the percussion track for this song. Also we have to give a ‘shout-out’ to Scott and Matt for them holding down the foundation of this song with Kevin. I love it when music teachers or composers or musicians do reaction videos. I find your comments (even criticisms sometimes) actually help me hear things I didn't hear before, and appreciate things I may have missed. One of the best critical/technical reviews I've ever seen of a PTX video is composer Rob Capilow's review of Angels We Have Heard On High. It really educated me on some of the technical ways PTX stands out and how something I felt instinctively was cool was actually musically and technically brilliant. You may want to react to this (no one ever has as far as I know) or just watch for your own entertainment:

I like how you pointed out the cinematography when they're all together...but they're not all together. They were all filmed separately and then put together digitally. You can tell by the lighting and how Kirstie is more focused. I think they're still recording separately and then blending it all in post, which is incredible that they can blend so beautifully even when singing alone. I definitely recommend their recent originals, particularly Happy Now. That one sounds like it should be on the radio. It truly upsets me that they don't get more radio play because they're acapella.

I am so excited that Kirstie wrote this and sang lead the entire time! I Love Her Style when she's doing pop music as The Soloist and I also loved her original music under her own label. But I have to say I like her music style and her singing with Pentatonix doing what they do better than with instruments behind her. She has the same sound, style and presence in front of the camera but Pentatonix brought a whole new level of something special that the instruments just didn't do. Kirstie and Mitch harmonizing was exquisite! And that's the sections I mean when when I'm talking about his "Angel Voice" later in this short Novel I'm writing. There is a point when Mitch was echoing what Kirstie sang, but he was singing higher than Kirdtie had. He enters his "Angel Voice" placement in that part towards the end before they break into the chorus.. and he does some runs and kind of glides around the notes in his Angel Voice like a bird gently riding the currents in the air effortlessly and beautifully! I loved that they did it that way because the two of them sound so good together! Also they did the last verse with Mitch singing a tight Harmony and the sound they created together was something else and totally new for them! I'm going to address that at the very end of this long comment that they will probably make me edit.
I love what Kirstie wrote! I just love what they did with it and the choices they made... like you said they didn't get lazy and added more breaks in the vowel (repeating the consonant "W" a few times instead of holding out the vowel for a 4-count).
but I think I have a surprise for you. I don't think Kevin sang that bass drop you were impressed with. Kevin is a tenor and he has the highest note in the group. He has a note higher than Mitch's highest note so listen for that when they're doing songs without percussion and they create those Exquisite 5-part harmony wall of sound! it's often Kevin you're hearing singing in the stratosphere! beatboxer, classical cellist and he takes voice lessons because he doesn't think he's as talented as the rest of the group (oh please! 😂) and ends up having the highest note in the group! They're 5 part harmonies or exquisite and sometimes they produce the most Soul jarring discordant Harmony that I can't believe they sang notes that close together and didn't cross into somebody else's note! But that's other songs.
so knowing what you know about Kevin's voice now I'm going to tell you why I don't believe Kevin did that bass drop that you were so fond of. I honestly think they were doing a thing messing with what we were seeing and hearing. I believe the bass drop was made by Matt with Kevin lip-syncing it... IF my ear does not deceive me. I think I recognize Matt's Bass at this point.?
Scott's bass sounds different enough for me to distinguish who is singing what now. In this Arrangement they switched the bass line around between Scott and Matt in different parts of the song so that Matt was harmonizing with Mitch. they surprised Us by having that sing in his upper register in a duet with Mitch in Mad World for the first time ! we didn't know that they could sound like that and now it's something that we need! Their voices sounded so good together that one fan combined their names to come up with something that represented them as a Duo and it would be Matt and Mitch which equals "Match" . Its a crazy combination that we had no idea they had in their Arsenal! Matt is the bass and he's singing Beautiful harmonies with a countertenor like Mitch?! Knock us over with a feather!
And Scott. Scott can sing anything I think ! He is so determined to learn how to do things sorry and he applied it to the lower end of his range and I think Scott sounds amazing as a bass! I think he's worked on it and has really come to own that part of his range. He sounds confident and is in control of it, never sounding like he's straining to hit the notes so that gives them another resource to pull from their bag of tricks! well when they wanted Matt to be singing in his upper register harmonizing with Mitch in this song They simply had Scott take over the bass and it was a rhythmic bassline he was doing. That's a whole nother skill to be able to have the Rhythm to work with the percussionist. The Rhythm Section is so important!
And boy did they switch people around in this one! You almost have to look at their mouths to see what parts they're doing to catch that Matt and Scott have switched roles. I'm sure you'll notice that when you dive in and tear it apart! And Mitch was singing in a way that sounds ethereal to me. He's not at his highest notes but something he's doing makes it sound angelic instead of a forward placement on his high notes Mask. He has power in that placement and can belt those high notes! but we get that cartoony sound . I know that's normal for forward placement when you put it right there in the front of your face in the mask and it's an accepted technique... which has done amazing things with that placement . I just have this thing about certain parts of his range and he's using them more now . I love when Mitch uses his chest voice or the can you come High ephereal, Angelic sound that I call his "Angel Voice" placement because I don't know what it's really called! Is there's a name for what he's doing? Is it a placement or technique?

OK, I am stoked that you picked up on all of the subtle evidences of their multiple talents. You will find that we Pentaholics are extremely passionate about Ptx - not just their songs, but because we already know that the reason for their fame & popularity is that aside from each of them being out-of-this-world talented in their individual right, there is a magic that exists when they sing together. Building on that statement, they have a collective ability to know how to put music together in such a way that best showcases that magic. They are creative geniuses & you can see how they produce their videos to show their perfectionism. They are NEVER lazy when arranging music, & you'll never hear a sloppy note anywhere in their performances. Also, each individual can perform many functions & back each other up well. For instance, when Matt is singing lead, Scott can take over bass like a pro. You are just starting out, so you are in for such a journey of discovery. Prepare to have your mind blown! My suggestions for the next few songs to react to are: Daft Punk, Halleluja, Mary, Did You Know and (because you are a fellow choir/music nerd & will appreciate what they are able to do verbally) I suggest you listen to "Run to You", one of their originals, a very soft & emotional song. After that, they do a killer version of The Sound if Silence & Shallow. There are so, so many. And they are ALL good, as Ptx is incapable of recording a song that is anything but phenomenal. So you can pretty much close your eyes and point and you can't go wrong. Enjoy this journey! We WILL be on it with you!!! Much love, Mama BJ (Bev)

Not knocking this song at all, but the first time I heard it, I heard “Orinoco Flow”. It’s not exact, but it definitely makes me think they could cover such a song well; similar tune and energy.

Yes. The first thing I heard was the tuned tympani sound, which Enya uses extensively.

Love, Love, Love the way you break down the song and the theatrics. I know nothing about music other than I like it or not, but the way you explain and appreciate the artistry of the musicians is beautiful and your enthusiasm is contagious . Your critique of the song gives me knowledge about music I wouldn't have the opportunity to receive. Also keep that great smile you have uit shows you truly enjoy your work. Never forget that you're teaching people like myself about the intricacies of music, much appreciated. Thanks

one song that absolutely always blows me away is Run To You - it's so amazing and it's early Pentatonix so from the get-go they were so incredible. Also if you get the chance, listen to Mitch & Scott's side project Superfruit singing Katy Perry's Rise - it's mind blowing

Am I the only one who hears similarities between the start of this song and Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)? Also during the body of the song, I can hear Ben Bram arranging similar to some of the Pitch Perfect music. Or am I totally off base? Opinion?

    • @Lookinforrealmusic
      @Lookinforrealmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The cadence throughout the song follows Orinoco Flow as well so the whole piece keeps ticking sail away vibes. If you check the credits this was mostly Matthew Komas style. Take a look at his other recent songs and you see that same use of repetitive lines over and over.
Cant deny that Bens influence has to be there as well though.

A lot of people are referencing Enya’s ‘Orinoco Flow’ which is do hear and I am a fan of her music but I hear an 80’s vibe which pre-dates Enya. This is a fabulous original song written by Kirsten and can’t wait for the album in February 2021. Always nice to hear a musicians take on their music because as a fan to PTX we are always mesmerised by what they can do with their voices and that there are usually no instruments or auto tune. PTX are truly incredible, they really should be better known, being TH-cam sensation is one thing but being a band in their own right is something else, I’m hoping the forthcoming album release will jettison them to more than just TH-cam!

Again I had to watch twice because I just keep watching you there's something about how your face has this look of..... pure joy I guess is the only word I can use to describe it. It's kinda how I feel when I'm listening to music but watching you is refreshing I'm sure there are videos that you could tear apart but so far I've loved the ones I've seen where you almost look like someone who's hearing music for the first time like you don't want to take a single not for granted it's pretty awesome. Also love the long hair.

They seem to be really comfortable in their own skin doing their own thing it's great to see. They are able to maintain a very high level of originality. When you can't imagine a group being any better and they do it again and again well.. that's a very very special thing.

I love watching your reaction videos, I watch them with my Dad. We love Pentatonix so they're our favourites. The range of facial expressions you have is literally how I feel listening to Pentatonix too haha.
I'd love to see your reactions to some more of their original songs. I really love Love Me When I Don't (which I believe Kirstie co-wrote)...it has a lovely melody, and Coffee in Bed (which I think Scott and Mitch co-wrote) as Matt and Kevin provide such a sick bass and beat.
They also, not too long ago, released a 90s dance medley - it would be interesting to see what you think of that! It's currently on repeat in my car 😂

I hadn't thought of the Pan's Labyrinth reference, but YES you nailed it with that one! Interestingly, this video was shot during the pandemic, so none of them were in the studio at the same time...all video layering. Kirstie wrote this song and apparently had a lot to do with the arrangement as well. I LOVE how she's coming out of her shell lately.

I would like to point out Mitch is comparable to David Bowie and Freddy Mercury in style and in vocal range( is Mezzo Tenor a thing? Well for Mitch it is). Still more impressive is that this was all done with the Covid19 isolating in place, IE: each one was recorded at separate locations. Which proves again these 5 performers are REALLY fantastic.

As you look at more of their music, you will find that no one vocalist gets all of the focus. Each singer generally gets a time to shine in each song, but more than that, no one of these singers could be considered THE lead vocalist, because they all get their chance to do that.

So this is the song that I wanted to react to, that spurred me to check out PTX's most recent few songs... and I'm not disappointed.
What drives me nuts is how they did the timpani! This being PTX, I'm 99% sure that's done acapella, even if it is on a loop track. If they used real timpani, I'm pretty sure they'd have shown it like they do with Kevin's cello, Scott's piano, etc.

They have done amazing things ... If you want to hear more original songs listen to Run To You, Love Again and Light in the Hallway (look for concert footage of this one). They have won three Grammys (Daft Punk, Dance of the sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene with Dolly Parton). Their Christmas albums are always amazing and Silent Night, Little Drummer Boy and Oh Come All Ye Faithful are my top three. To really hear how amazing Avi's basso profundo is, listen to any concert footage of Aha! (Mitch is also amazing in that one). All the original member of Pentatonix have had solo projects as well as the work they do together, especially Avi and Kevin. Have fun on this journey ... their is so much of thier music for you to explore!
