- It's back! After almost a year Mr H's quest continues once again to find out who makes the best pies in the North West of England as he visits 'Bowen Pies' located in the village of Adlington near Chorley to sample one of their award winning meat & potato pies.
mr h at it again! ct usa here!
Great video as always, Mr. H! 😁
Used to love Edward's pies. They had a couple of shops in Platt Bridge. Sadly, long gone.
Hi Robb, their slogan used to be 'Edwards perfect pies' if I remember rightly and I've had a couple of their pies from time to time when they had a stall in the market hall.
Beestons Bakery now have their old premises on Walthew Lane in Platt Bridge and I've reviewed their pies below last year which you may have already seen. 👍

@MrHsHotPot Edward's pie shop was located on the top end of New Street opposite the old co-op store. They may have had another shop on Walthew Lane near the junction of Lily Lane but not certain. Didn't know about their stall in the market hall. Can't recall there ever being an Edward's pie shop where the Beestons is now, if there was it was before my time.
These were two quid up, and during Covid Mr H. Every time you went in they'd gown up wap!
Mr H when you are next in Blackpool try Bennetts Bakery , they are on Lytham Road on tbe junction of Highfield Road ( They have another shop also in Lytham) their pies are magnificent around £1.70 to £2.50 ...they are closed on sunday and Monday and generally around 2pm they have sold out , they oftern have long queue too , you can park around there for free too so you can have a mooch on tbe prom when you are there....the cakes they make are smashing too .
Try Walsh's (Ye old pastie shoppe) Bolton
Looks excellent quality.
Hi Christopher, I can't fault the quality of the pie as it tasted delicious and left me wanting another one but at £3.10 a pop they are a little on the expensive side for me personally sadly.
You'll not beat Gents pie shop on Pepper lane in Standish. The steak is amazing and still cheap as chips.
2nd Fred Dibnahs owd favourite in Bolton, Cuerdon Pie shop.
Hi Starsailorer, yes I've got to agree with you regards Mrs Gents Pie Shop her meat & potato pies are still only £1.50 so for the price of one of Bowens pies which are admittedly good I can have two from Gents and still have change for the bus fare home.
As I said in the video an empty pie shop at dinner time is a sign of one of two things either the pies aren't up to scratch or they are too expensive and as you know with Mrs Gents if you don't get there early enough she's got nowt left which speaks for itself.
Will have to make a mental note of Cuerdon's Pie Shop in Bolton especially as it has a Fred Dibnah connection so thanks for the tip. 👍
Fully agree there mr h.
Also Claphams in Leigh!
Honest review Roy
Blackburn's. Cambridge road St.Helens. Pies only £1.20 ish i think. Mrs goes in you see.
It pains me as a Wiganer, but Blackburn’s pie shop in St Helens makes the tastiest meat and potato pie I’ve ever had
I remember your pie survey. 👍
Is Holands pie factory still open in Baxendale Mr H ? we put this huge car park in years and years ago, lived off pies for weeks!🙂 people were great, we were the boys from the Blackstuff working out of Town!
I agree with you Mr. H that the COVID measures taken by the shop should have been left in 2020 rather than still being active in 2023
£3.10 for a Meat and Prater pie!!! Go back to Burnden Park Pie Shop for half that price Mr H and delicious too as you know.
Hi Dave, yeah £3.10 is taking the piss a bit and probably why their shop was empty at dinner time when they were queuing out the door of the one across the road as I cannot fault the quality of their pies.
Either way something is wrong with their prices when a third party shop can undercut them by 40p on their own pies! Lol.
Try Armstrongs bakery in Bolton if ever there, they're on Morris Green lane, but cash only like a few other pie shops in know. 👍
It’s exactly the same with greenhalghs!! You can get them cheeper at the texico garage! Going direct to the source doesn’t seem a thing no more!
Great video, please pop into Manchester.
Whittakers at Tyldesley..
Try Sargents in Leith on Leigh road !
look forward to pie vids mr h
I agree about the measures still being used- foolishness. A high price for a pie, but a good pie is worth it. 👍
Sargents in Leigh on Leigh road!
best pies are homemade whether it's mince, chicken or beef. I make all my own pies. I batch make them in a twin individual pie maker I bought for £28 on Amazon about 8 years ago
Loafer's recommended, pie themed, musical interlude.
No oven, no pie. Everly Pregnant Brothers. Reyt daft.
100% get yourself down to Orrell pal and try the muffin man pie shop. Best pies for miles mr h.
NICE 1 Mr H .. i like a pie un a barm misell pal 👈😎👉
Agree with you with the covid thing, just when you think the summer is over and there's nothing to look forward to, the pie test returns, great. Wish you could have tasted my mums pies, I don't do hot liquid so no tea, coffee, soup, gravy etc, but she made me a great meat pie
scrumdiddlyumptious haha Barry was a bit mental but he said some funny stuff
Despite having had various online spats with him in the past Peter, which when looking back were over nowt really I'll admit that he could be entertaining at times and knocked out some decent little videos when he used to live in Wigan.
Like myself he's moved on and it's all water under the bridge now.
Gillards pies were nice back in the day...that pie did look nice Mr H but the price is a turn off.
Hi Gary, to be fair to Bowen Pies if I was just rating them on the pie alone they would have scored a five as the pie was tasty and smelled delicious my stomach was even doing those little hunger anticipation somersaults that you get sometimes. Lol. 😆
But yes at £3.10 it is a little steep when compared to £1.50 at my favorite pie shop Mrs Gents which I've reviewed previously and have featured in my videos a number of times. 👍
Well said about the C*vid measures, belongs in the past.
PEPPER lane pie shop standish
whittles in pem
Hi Nick, a friend of mine offline has also recommended Whittles pies but the last time I was up that way the shop from the front appears to be a bog standard Galloways.
Is it the little side entrance past the Galloways shop down Tunstall Lane that I need to go to try their pies?
Thanks in advance and all the best. 👍
hiya mate , yes it is , its only part time now . they are having the front done up , so its closed for a week or two , it opens tuesday thursday and saturday . great pies and not expensive too , @@MrHsHotPot
Thanks for the info Nick, as it's saved me a possible wasted journey. 👍
My friend who was a Galloways regular said that Galloways were leaving as Whittles wanted their shop back. I'm assuming Whittles had leased it to them for a fixed period to bring in some revenue to get them over some financial difficulty which if that is the cae it seems to have worked out for them.
whittles is miles better than galloways , i ll let you know mate as things happen , i once bumped into you in asda , remember@@MrHsHotPot
You want to see the crap pies they sell in Yorkshire, mainly Doncaster. They don't have a clue what a good pie is.
£3.10 almost a walking out stage 🤔 you need to rethink your prices!! Bargain 🥧
Hi Farang Travels, I guess all the people who were queuing outside of the door at the other pie shop across the road when I bought this pie disagree with you. 😆
But on a serious note where in the country are you from and on average what would you expect to pay for a meat & potato pie around your way if you think £3.10 is a 'bargain'? 😲
Just as a little comparison Mrs Gents Pie Shop in Standish whose meat & potato pies have featured a number of times in my videos and I have reviewed previously are currently £1.50 so for the price of one of Bowens pies I can have two and still have change for the bus fare home.
Still think £3.10 is a 'bargain' based on that? 😉
