- Mr H begins a quest to find out who makes the best pies in the North West of England beginning with the locally famous 'Mrs Gents Pie Shop' in the village of Standish located in his hometown of Wigan.
Great bunch of videos. What makes them great, is your easy and familiar style of speaking (like to a friend), your range of subjects(willingness to do different subjects you know about), and the outdoors and historic places near you. Please don't limit yourself by distance from home. I'm sure you'd be a pleasurable view, any historic site you'd visit. Especially the lesser known ones. Keep up the great work and very entertaining videos.

Hi Johnboy, yes Barry Titler did the original 'Mrs Gents Pie Shop' video and uploaded it to his then 'The Wigan Drummer' TH-cam channel which he sadly deleted along with the videos on there when he left Wigan for Cumbria, which is a shame as he had some really interesting local history type of stuff on there at the time in a similar vein to the videos that can be found on my own channel.
I have been over to his 'Chatting with me in a HGV' channel and tipped my hat to him as it's great to see that a Wigan expat is doing well up there in Cumbria, however because the focus of his channel has shifted to reflect his life today and is now mainly HGV focused it's not for me anymore.
Anyway although I don't think that anyone could capture the sheer enthusiasm that Barry put into that video I hope that you have enjoyed this one and the ones that will follow in this little series, enjoy the rest of your evening and all the best. 👍
The best pies in the North West are Whittakers Pies on Castle St in Tyldesley, established in 1958 so still going strong after 65 years.

I did a search for the great Fred dibnahs landrover and it’s still mot’d and going strong. I don’t know how to send you the photo of which one it’s reg plate and the mot screen shots. But I think finding his Mandy and see what happened to it would make a great video. Iv not managed to see his others close enough as yet to get the reg numbers.
If I can get this to you and you were interested in making this video I’d love to.

Hello again Derrick, this was the first video in what I originally intended to be an ongoing series of pie shop reviews however as you've probably noticed if you've looked through my past catalogue of videos I don't concentrate on just one subject as I like to cover a number of interests so they sort of fell by the wayside before the series began.
However recently I have decided to start doing more pie shop reviews again especially now that winter is creeping up on us again and the British weather will inevitably deteriorate and stop me doing my main style of video which is visiting and documenting interesting and curious locations outdoors.

I said nice review, I need to do one you can criticize me. Cincinnati chili. (For God's sake chocolate and cinimum in meat chilies, Ohio is a swing state so every presidential candidate has to appear to like it. ) when I get camera you can critique me.
Hi Roy, Had a day out with the misses today in Parbold, and whilst I was near to Standish we tried out Mrs Gents Meat and Potato pie. 10 out of 10 for the pie, thanks for the recommendation, even the wife said it was and excellent pie ! and thats praise indeed :)

Glad that you both enjoyed your pies and you are welcome for the recomendation. One thing I forgot to mention in the video and something to remember should you visit Mrs Gents again (which I'm sure you will now that you've tasted her pies 😉) is to try and go before lunchtime if you can otherwise all the local builders etc have usually cleaned her out and she's got nowt left. 😕
Anyway the bar has now been set regarding the quality that I'm looking for and hopefully this little series of videos will turn up a few more pie shop gems like Mrs Gents.

Hi Anthony, yes many pie shops in Wigan do a pie on a barmcake but the 'pie on a barm' first started in Leigh which is the next town to Wigan and eventually made it's way here.
I've never tried one myself but they are supposed to be good by all accounts.

@@MrHsHotPot I know Leigh. Now famous for their first Conservative MP. Comments from market traders were that people were sick of their council tax money being spent in Wigan. It's like that here in Somerset. Money being hived off to Taunton & wasted on loss-making new developments.

Never met a pie i didnt like
they were called warburtons, but not made by the warburtons bread manufacturer, they were the fittest pies in the world, meat and potatoe, they shut down 20 years ago, the meat was mince, and the pastry was thin, best with brown sauce by daddies, ;)

Commiserations John, Morrisons pies can be a bit hit and miss. sadly dosen't help that they cook them then leave them sat out all day in those brown paper bags.
Hopefully your next pie fix will be much better experience.😉

Looks very tasty Mr H we dont have a well known pie shop anymore here in Oldham, so make my own pies and if I say so myself they are very tasty!, Thank you for the insight!
Hi Jules, well you can't beat home cooked food it's just a shame that the traditional pie shop has disappeared from Oldham and is on the decline elsewhere in the north west.
At present it seems that in and around the town of Bolton still have the most small independent pie shops.

I've often seen the advertisement for Beestons when I've been passing through Platt Bridge and promised myself I'd try it one day but I always end up forgetting with it being tucked away behind the old Queens Arms pub.
I'll make a point of visiting Beeston's during this series of videos as it's not too far from me.

Shame that Pool’s closed down because their pies were marvellous, a rare treat.
Hi Gwyn, I remember Pooles pies very well especially the shop by the entrance to the Bus Station in the town centre.
The story I heard that led to their demise was that when Dave Whelan sold Pooles he sold the business and shops but wanted extra from the new owners for the rights to all the recipes and they wouldn't pay for them which is why Pooles pies tasted different afterwards.
No idea how true the story is and it's probably an urban myth but Pooles stuff wasn't as good towards the end, although they did make a brief return to the frozen aisle of Morrisons a few years back not sure if they still do them though.
Lived in Wigan all mi life Roy and never known about Mrs gents pies. Will definitely give it a try tho. Did you say her shop is on pepper lane ?
Hi Gareth, yes her shop is next door to Pepper Lane Chippy on the right after the roundabout at the top end of Standish, soon after turning onto Pepper Lane from Preston Road heading towards Coppull.
Something I didn't mention in the video is be sure to get there before dinnertime though otherwise all the local builders etc clean her out and she's nowt left!

Can't beat a proper pie shop used be loads at one time favorite pie shop was Edward's pie and cake shop's in wigan, platt bridge the small factory was based in platt bridge only co's me mam's mam's older sister married into the Edwards family. Not sure if the factory survived the fire but two shops are still used under different busness today.
Hi thebestgamer i game, I remember Edward's pie stall being in Wigan's market hall back in the early 90's and their slogan of 'Edward's perfect pies' emblazoned on the top of the stall.
Wasn't really my go to pie shop if i'm honest but they've filled a corner a time or two in the past when I've been in the market hall and felt a bit peckish.
I believe Beeston's Bakery have taken over Edward's former premises in Platt Bridge but no idea if Beeston's evolved from Edward's or whether it was a direct buy out. Either way it's a shame to see a familiar long standing Wigan business name disappear.

I'd love to hear what you think of Cottom's here in St Helens. It's a shame I can't recommend Pimblett's as they went out of business years ago. Someone bought the name recently and began making their pies again supposedly using the original recipe but it's just not the same. I can still taste their meat and tater pies to this day haha.

It's always a shame when new owners come in and buy a place and the stuff dosen't taste as good as before.
Exactly the same thing happened over here in Wigan with Pooles Pies a number of years ago and they are no longer in business either.
Probably it starts with them cutting corners by changing to cheaper suppliers for their ingredients etc hoping that the customers won't notice, but they do every time.
Did you ever try Lievesley's Pie Shop that used to be on Charles Street in St Helens which was also meant to be good ?
I grew up in St Helens in the 80's and 90's and Pimbletts meat and potato were the ones we all devoured. They had a lot of shops throughout the area but I think all the pies were made at their main bakery in the town so no matter which shop you went to it was always consistently good. Shame they are no longer trading. I've tried a few pies around the Wigan area as we travelled there to attend the Rugby League matches against Saints but never found one as good as Pimbletts. I live in Ireland now, and the pie has a lot less of a presence on the high street, plus as I've got older I can't deal with the after effects of eating pastry. Love the channel Mr H.
@@MrHsHotPot Lievesley's was brilliant, much like Mrs gent's in the sense that it was all made right there in the shop with good quality ingredients. It's a shame they also fell by the wayside. You've also got it spot on with the new Pimblett's owners, I went there soon after they reopened and the meat and tater pies were more gristle and tater, terrible.
Got a mate in Wigan, who will be getting me one on Friday, looking forward to the meat pie. Will post a Bolton verdict of a Wigan pie.

@@MrHsHotPot Got my meat pie yesterday and now to set the scene, I had my pie with some chips and gravy, takes me back to the old schools days. Pastry was looked appealing and fell apart nicely, revealing the inside of the pie. The inside was evenly packed with, just the right amount of meat and potato. First mouth full tasted amazing, followed by some chips and gravy with pie. before I know it, everything has gone leaving a clean plate. So my verdict from the town of Bolton, 'Mrs Gents Pie Shop' gets 5/5, well worth a try, diffidently will be going back. My also asked if you had tried a 'Pimletts' pie, if so whats the verdict.

Yep had a few meat & prater pies from the Muffin Man myself in the past although they used to do a great hot steak Canadian sandwich back in the days when I was working for Standish Property Services But I'm not sure if they still do it anymore.
Which branch do you prefer? I've always found the one on Gathurst Lane in Shevington to be the best. 👍

Hey up bud, yeah used to like Greenhalgh's meat & prater pies myself but at almost £3 quid a pop they are a bit too expensive for Mr H's pocket plus they are a bit too peppery for my taste these days.
Getting lots of recommendations now of shops to try in other towns as well so this should be a good little series but yeah makes you hungry just thinking about it. 👍

Having sampled several of mrs Gents pies over the years I can agree with all you have said, however in this particular mr H's opinion there is no such thing as over seasoning. An excellent video as usual Mr H
