More like "Sooooo how many soldiers and tanks are you willing to lose. Since we are willing to lose many to defend. How many are you willing to attack".
Which I think is one thing about our attitude, that people might over look. It isn't that we think we will easily swat away Russian attack. Oh, we know it will cost us dearly. It's just the price are being willing to be paid and we calculate Russia isn't willing to pay the price for the attack. Plus even upon on political level choosing to attack, well once the reality of war starts. Our fighting morale will last longer than their fighting morale.
We know that and we know they know that. Meaning when they threaten with stuff it's "and we both know 99% that is empty talk. If it's the 1%, we are prepared for that possibility also".
Which frankly relies on Finland as country as whole and it's condition. It relies on willingness to defend, which is high. Which isn't so much about how many tanks or planes we have. No it is more about we have society and societal benefits people are willing to fight to keep. Our free education, our social security system, our democracy and so on. After that is in order aka willingness to defend, even in event of bad odds, well rest is material and organizational prepardness. However it all at base relies on willingness to fight and when need be ultimately to die for the country (or more likely for the country to be there for ones relatives, female, friends and so on).
It doesn't matter how big guns you have, if one isn't willing to oneself to bleed. Since then one is just glass cannon. One will fall like a card house. If one is willing to bleed, one can endure.

I bet that the Russian soldiers along the border with Finland are some of the happier soldiers in the Russian army. They know they won`t be attacked any time soon so can remain relatively safe. The commanders of these soldiers probably get a lot of respect and their troops don`t break the rules or they might get "transferred" to Donetsk..

"finland, finland, finland, the country where i want to be.... " Monty Pythons sings :P

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

Which is actually big part of it. Finlands deterrence is ultimately based on one of the best defence will statistics. "Would you be willing to fight to defend country from attack, even on case of victory not being self evident" (aka are you willing to fight a hard fought fight and not just an enemy slaughtering fest due to overwhelming advantage). Finland has one of the best in the world.
That again is for real about "Finland, the country where i want to be". You can't military discipline or train such willingness. It is purely in the end based on "this is country and society worth fighting for. I like this place, so I'm willing to make sacrifices to defend it". After that then comes training on how to fight and procuring the weapons and materials to fight. However it still comes down to "we are willing to bleed, if it comes to that". Obviously not volunteering to bleed, point is to make enemy bleed and minimize own sides bleeding. However reality is there will be bleeding.
For example one thing I have noticed for example about PR video material of Finnish Defence Forces versus many others. In every fighting scenario presented *A finn gets hurt* . It isn't heroic material of "we go in, we kick ass, all bad guys dead, we come home to sauna and drink beer".
No the Finnish "we kick the door in" starts with "and the lead guy takes a bullet, since realisticly that is what happens. Then the rest of the team pours in and takes out bad guys. However the lead guy is still there bleeding on the floor medic starts to give blood transfusion". Or attack in forest and... the lead guy walks into a mine. Gets leg blown off and that ain't something one just hospital fixed with couple months. That guy won't ever have that leg again. Nor is it some scene of soldier going "go, i keep them off" doing heroic sacrifice against evil horde. No the guy walked in a mindless, thoughtless indiscriminate mine and that sacrifice gives no gains. You just walked in mine and now you won't have leg. Since such hell is war. Mindless slaughter.
The attitude is "war will be hell, be prepared. We try to utmost to avoid war, since war is hell there is no glory in it. However needs must it will be fought, since this society is worth it. Not for the glory of ancestors or patriotic ethos. No, for the fact that we are a really nice liberal democracy to live in and want to keep it that way".

We have 900.000 reservists, bigger artillery than UK, Germany and France combined, biggest in Europe. Russia may threat and rattle saber to Finland, but at this moment all Russian military bases near Finnish border are empty and every man is in Ukraine. Russia just doesn’t have the resources to attack Finland (full NATO membership) and same time fighting in Ukraine. I have served in FDF as Jaeger, TOW-gunner. My grandfather fought in Winter War 1939, when soviets try to invade us, the Red Army had more than one million soldiers already deployed on our borders; Finland, prior to mobilization, had just 33,000. After 105 days they stopped. The casualties were too big for Stalin. We kept our independence.

Finland has been ready for Russia since what? the 2nd world war? What i have read and studied their military is highly trained and are equipped with some of the best equipment money can buy. I also understand that the eastern border between finland and russia is said to be some of the most difficult terrain layouts to operate at and heavily favours the defender. Finns got massive amount of troops/equipment specifically trained to operate in a dense forest like terrain and wage asymmetric warfare on Russia....yeah, i'd skip Finland too.

There will be 15 US bases right next to Russian border, most important ones in the Lapland which are about 200-300km away from Kola Peninsula which is the area where most of Russian nukes are. Gives huge edge for NATO to have radars and counter missiles there as it allows extremely fast reaction time against them. Also Russian main energy arteries are about 100-150km away from Finnish border, so in case of war, NATO can easily cut it off. But yeah, those bases are coming, thanks to the DCA between USA and Finland.

Finland was completely free and independent during that time. I know I lived in Finland that time.We were free to do anything and Finland was not behind the iron curtain. Finland joined the Nordic council and was and is a Nordic and western country. Finland had a "good relationship" with Russia and with western countries.
All the time finns criticized Russia's government and felt sorry for Russian ppl.
It was easy for Finns to travel in all western countries, but traveling in the eastern European countries they had to have a visa, permissions and the documents etc.

Thank you for the amazing report. Since I lived during the end of the cold war. I always thought the only real reason that russia never attacked was due to the Star Wars Weapons' Platform. Now yes there was a movie actually called Star Wars however two totally unrelated. The weapons system was designed to be a money pit that russia could never get out of until it succeeded in creating a defence for the system. However it was basically designed to fool russia with movie tech at the time and with the correlation of all the Satellites we sent up at the time with the International Space station talks. That the Star Wars weapon itself was to harness the ability to use the satellites to lock onto and destroy the Nuclear weapon in space at its highest trajectory. Also that it could be used offensively to strike weapons silos and mobile russian NBCW (Nuclear, Biologica, Chemical, Weapons) platforms while they were going to the launching site.
It was basically the worst animation of the time showing these satellites linking up and hitting the target with lasers and missiles in outer space. Plus the war in Afghanistan at the time caused russia to fall. Now the Soviet Union's nickname for those past the cold war was all the territory that the Nazi Germans had taken and then fallen into the hands of USSr and then being a vassal state in name only as a blocking point for russian defence if NATO attacked. The Iron Curtain was basically to stall and by time for russia and its limited allies to fight. With a vast Majority of russian assets still in the Stains regions with their space program locked in Kazakhstan which just told russia to piss off as of last year in 2023 that they would not allow russia to use the 1 launching platform it had.
Now each State in the Union which was occupied with a russian Friendly government which was meant to basically enslave its people as russians. Each state started to get courage from time to time and had horrific shut down operations by the government using troops from different areas' posted inside that country so that it was not the citizens shooting on citizens of the societies. Meant to be shown as power over the people as in riot we send in the USSR military not your own military and kill everything that was in front of it. However with the funds being used for war on the American space program Afghanistan, and all the resources it took to hold by force the states into the union. As the wars went the money left and russia did not at one point even have enough money to pay its officers. Now this is a quick and crude history just for a comment on the American perspective. We always wanted Europe to join with America to be allies even with russia. At one point we offered them to join NATO. In the early 2000s russia started to pull away from the collective West and started being leery of russian intentions. After Putler started to re-write the russian constitution. Now with what is left of it you could not use it to blow your nose with. Putler stripped so much from russia that it went from Communism to Capitalism to whatever this is now.
Like I was saying prior, each country that was in front of russia was just a resource to slow the UN or NATO or whatever it was down. That is one reason most of the russian vehicles are amphibious even the tanks so they could keep going when NATO was sure to blow the bridges when russia invaded. Good foresight by the russians as to how to know your enemy. russia was perfectly willing to sacrifice its vassal state for USSr. Until 1986, 26, 04 or Chernobyl which changed russian strategy after that due to the waste that came back from wind currents. russia only said it was around 100 that died and that it was not a big deal. And yet here we sit and when russia tried to take Chernobyl they dug into the soil using equipment that had been saturated in radioactive air for over 30 years. Needless to say the control of the plant is still in UKraines hands after the whole group was sent back to russia where from the last report less than 8% survived after the choice to "Dig In" not sure if they are on this side or the other side of the grass. There is a great interview with a commander of the Ukraine defence force that is on TH-cam.

Thank you for your comment and your insight in this matter.
I know that the US at one time even wanted to be allies with Russia but they decided to go their own way. Its sad that their corrupt leaders have made its people suffer for so long. And now they have Putin and he is in my opinion a complete psychopath, possibly he has ALL traits from the dark triad.
I'm from Finland but live in Sweden.
I'm glad we joined NATO because we need allies and I think its good that Sweden starts to build up its military even more now. Finland has always had a strong military especially after ww2. We never stopped thinking about who is a threat against us, its Russia and has always been.
I think its a good think so many countries have now joined NATO and Europe and the US must always remain strong allies. That is very important for both sides since we are basically the same people and have very similar values in comparison to Russia who now seems to be an ally to Iran, North Korea and China.
My fear is that once Putin gets even older, and realizes how much he has screwed up by attacking Ukraine, and he has made Russia a pariah state, he might push the button and start a nuclear war with no winners only losers.
I'm afraid of him killing the entire earth. It frightens me because he is an evil dictator that only believes in his own insanity and if someone opposes him, he gets them killed.
Oh and I saw the interview with the soldier that had protected cernobyl and I the Russians that dug down in trenches in the radioactive soil and washed and dried their clothes and just completely contaminated themselves in highly radioactive material for over a month.
After getting home I bet their hair started falling out, they started to get sores on the parts of their bodies most exposed to radiation etc. If there were any survivors I hope they don't succeed in getting any children because if they even survive, they will have alot of congenital birth defects.
Anyway have a nice day/night and I love intelligent comments like yours, they make my day🫠
