I think you would have been better off chiselling out some timber so the keep could be installed. That 3mm of timber acting as a keep looks likely to break fairly soon.
The bolt goes deep into the actual door frame. The bolt that was removed was holding in the same material for years with no problems ;-)

Thanks for this, I needed to know how this works for a product animation I'm working on.
This is the go to how to! At 1.30 you measure where to drill the large hole. 40mm - from where? Only one dimension is mentioned. And then how do you measure where to drill this hole from the other side?

I would ideally like to install a metal plate that would give extra strength where the bolt enters the door frame. Do you know what this would be called so I can search for it? Again many thanks.
I'm not sure, sorry- but you could easily make one from a piece of brass.

Problem I have with similar lock, the bar keeps sliding out of the lock. And the handle is slightly loose, any tips, and does the metal bar with flat surface should face towards you or the door when sliding it through
You might need a longer bar, sometimes people use one that is too short.
They sell them on ebay, if you search for door handle spindle, some should pop up- just make sure you get the correct size, as they come in a few different widths.
Not much you can do about a loose handle, unless you want to start stripping it down and replacing springs/clips etc. (often easier to get new handles)
I've just bought one of these indicator bolt to install. The problem I have is my door sits flush with the frame (not inside the frame). So how do I get the bolt into the body of the frame. Do I install the bolt bit that you left out or do I make a hole and let the bolt slide in. I can email you a pic of the door
I think you would need to install the keep which is the part he said he would not be installing at the beginning of the video....hope this helps

Would you have preferred the indicator to have lined up with the actual door handle?
Also I notice you only used minimal torque when fixing to the door. Was it a hollow door?
I realised I could get it in line with the handle above and adjusted it to suit, if you watch the start of the video, you will see that it is aligned with the door handle although in the video it's not aligned when I am driving the screws in (I didn't have time to film it all again). The door was hollow, but there is a block where the lock/T latch is normally installed. The screws were tight!

You would have to rebate some of the door frame, then screw it into position.

The hole Edge is so thin if someone full the door hard it will break.
It's only a downstairs toilet- not Fort Knox ;-)
The bolt is still there today, working perfectly.

can I ask what do you use to sharpen your chisel
It's a Stanley chisel, which was bought as a set of three with a sharpening stone and oil. I just sharpen them using the stone and guide that came with the kit
