  • In 1984 this was a rare move to take a Class 50 to Portsmouth Harbour. So it was that on 10th June 1984 50006 powered 1Z42 from Stafford through to the seaside town. The window in the front coach provided the vantage point at a time when video was still a relatively new choice with which to capture such events. We have included all of the footage recorded that day - and we've also tweaked the sound a little too! Hope you enjoy.

    Excellent sound for an out-of-the-window recording (for which now of course youd be manhandled by a high vis wearing pocket Fuhrer)

    The start from Portsmouth & Southsea Hight level, was that bang a brake block cracking or shutting the loco brake off fast then releasing it?

      @Pjaxable ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's a bang when the shutter blade slams shut on the loco just before departing, so maybe it's this.

      @@Pjaxable Many thanks you are correct, its been so long since they were in use the shutters were that loud, I watched them and they move at that moment on the video, Thanks.

    Were those tankers at Portsmouth Harbour for refuelling?

      Maybe for fueling Hampshire units or Class 33's saving them a trip to Fratton? or Foot Ferry fuel?

      Pretty sure it was for the Sealink ferries at Portsmouth Harbour to the Isle of Wight, and possibly the Gosport ferry too.

      They supplied fuel for the Isle of Wight boats

    18.22 mins of some bloke hanging out of a train window has to be one of the most boring videos on TH-cam

      Stick to your exciting fishing then - clearly you are way behind the curve on railway history.

      But it took you 18mins and 22 seconds to draw your conclusion the video was boring ? Youre not a very quick thinker are you......

      In the 80's used to love as a kid on a family day trip hang my head out of an open carriage window feel the wind and hear the sound of a class 50 pulling the whole train along.
      And no I was NOT a 'train spotter'.
