For this particular kitchen, I vote as is. I think the cabinets look quite good still. I think painting is an excellent option for tired cabinets or brand new cabinets (purchased painted). The kitchen turned out great. The changes made a big difference! It's hard to pick one or two things, but I think painting out the red wall(s) and painting that utility closet door were key.
Your MIL’s comment that older people like the wood is correct. They value the beauty of wood, the expense, the expertise in making something that they expect to last a lifetime. They probably saved for a long time to have a quality product. Us young ones grew up with mdf and much cheaper things, which we have no qualms in changing regularly.
I don't know what you consider older. But I'm 60 years old and my first thought was aren't you going to paint the 80's cabinets. The cabinets are not a pretty wood. Plus painting the cabinets would bring out the beautiful wood color of the island. I don't know about blue or sage green. To specific for resale. I would have gone with white.
I’m 49 and I’ve always loved wooden cabinets. In a 100 year old house, painted cabinets do not translate well. It’s like a beautiful period house with a plastic-looking kitchen. Her cabinets are beautiful. I’m glad you left them the way they are.
Me too!!! I love the wood look! My kitchen was completely redone and I went with walnut cabinets and matte black hardware and a big matte black range hood
This turned out gorgeous and I actually like it with the wooden cabinets in the end with the green pots, plants and lighter walls it's kind of a nice light boho feel.
I like how the lighter wood cabinets allow the rest of her kitchen decor to pop. The new hardware updated them and they contribute to the calming atmosphere that the wall color introduced to the room. The use of the small cabinet for the beverage storage is genius; later, if she is so inclined, maybe the cabinet can be painted the same as the wall color and the glass can be frosted. Another job well done!
In this case I vote for the wood cabinets. Paint choices are often so trendy. That sage green everyone wants now was not anyone’s choice a year ago, and it will look so dated and over-used in a few years. If the existing cabinets were dark wood in a dark kitchen I might advocate painting white or cream, but these wood cabinets are perfectly lovely for a cottage-y or boho look. You did a great job here. And OMG that new refrigerator is HUGE. It looks commercial-size to me. Wonderful. She might even be able to keep her whole soda stash in there.
Beautiful! Earlier you mentioned recommending painting a neutral color for possible resale in the future. I would say the same can be said about leaving the cabinets unpainted. If a potential buyer saw painted cabinets but wanted wood, they may be turned off thinking of the amount of effort to remove the paint or replacing cabinets. Those who prefer painted ones, would be envisioning what color they would like to add to the cabinets. Leaving them unpainted opens the door to more buyers. :D
For resale purposes, I think it’s best to leave the cabinets unpainted. While I like the navy color, it is very taste specific and won’t necessarily appeal to a wide range of buyers. Also, happy that she decided to invest in the stainless steel appliances!
Natural wood, I've always preferred that, all 7 decades of my life. Remember that wood paneling came on the scene in the 1960's, it was the poor man's alternative to real pine boards on the walls. Everyone had to have it! So it's absolutely a classic look that will never go out of style, unlike paint colors. That red wall you couldn't wait to get rid of is proof of how rapidly color goes out of style. Beautiful end result!
Thank you for the shout out April! That was so very kind of you!! I really appreciate your support. The kitchen turned out beautifully! I'm honored that my lavender is in there! :) (Hope you had fun on your trip! )
Definitely wood! Painted cabinets show every ding. In a working kitchen wood stands the test. This is from someone who has had wood then painted. In our new cabinets we knew we wanted wood.
I agree with your mother-in-law. The wood cabinets look very nice in this room. While I also like painted cabinets, in this case I think navy would have been too dark since the room is small. If they had been cheap, dark or in bad shape that would have been different. The room looks warm, cozy and in keeping with the house as a whole.
I like it with the wooden cabinets too, and actually I do so in most designs. Wood will always represent nature and bring a natural element to our homes. I am 31 by the way, and guess I represent the younger generation.
I'm a youngish (middle age?!?) person. I like real wood, the patterns of the grain. Her kitchen cabinets are a nice wood, they look nice. We updated our kitchen like this, kept the oak cabinets.
I’m surprised you did not paint the little white cabinet next to the refrigerator the same color as the walls. That would allow it to look like it was meant to be there and not as noticeable when you walk in and see that area. That was such a great use for the cabinet! I love repurposing!!! The kitchen looks amazing and I love all her pottery!! I would so want that out also and I am more of a minimal person when it comes to my counters. Love your videos and am so glad you are going to be continuing them. I cannot wait to see the final walk though next Sunday! ❤️❤️❤️
I’m so glad that my parents invested in quality, stainless steel pots and pans when they got married in 1950, because I’m still using them,72 years later!
Nice job! Though the size of fridges in the US will never cease to amaze me, especially when you replaced the big one with an even bigger one. At the start of the video when you updated the knobs I thought "Oh I'm glad she didn't paint the lovely wooden cabinets but just changed the knobs" so to answer your question. Sorry, I'm totally with your mother in law. If I get the choice between a lovely wooden look or a painted one, the wooden look will always win. No, I'm not a senior or even that old, either.
I am 60 years old and those cabinets remind me of all the cheap cabinets landlord's use to put in apartments in NYC back in the 80's. All of which tenants eventually painted. I think the island is a beautiful wood finish. Painting the cabinets would have highlighted the beauty of the island.
I like the kitchen cabinets in their natural wood but I probably would have painted the base of the island sage green. I think the kitchen looks updated and beautiful.
It's an entirely different house! You are tireless, incredibly talented, and gracious. I like wood, but am not against painted cabinets. Don't like metal or hard cabinets. Can't wait for your next reveal. Great job
I like the wood cabinets she has. The only time I would paint is if they are not in good condition. You did a wonderful job. It’s very calming. Paint is such an easy and affordable way to update a room. We have an accent wall in our living room and kitchen that you can see from both areas. Accent walls are not “in” but we get compliments about the teal blue color against lighter blue walls all the time.
I vote wood cabinets. I would prefer painted but the wood just fits much better with the cottage theme. I feel painted cabinets would make the space too modern. Can’t wait for the final tour and the next project!
I love that you did this for your family. Best kind of gifts 💕 I'm 48 (don't know if that puts me in the older group, ha!), and I like regular natural wood. I don't follow trends and I am all about neutrals.
Leave as is....she is correct speaking as an "older" person. And she will be living with it. If & when she sells, the new owner will make that decision. Don't spend the extra time & money if she's happy as it is.✨✨
I know it's 2 years later but... the colour April had in mind would have been lovely, but at least the wood is nice and not that dreadful pine orange. If they were I would have said paint, but seeing as the wood is OK, I hope they left it.
The painted louvre doors definitely work. I am an oldie...so I prefer to see wood for the wall cabinets. One of the problems with painting cabinets a strong, bold colour, is that it is a pain to repaint if you want to go pale again...an issue if you want a neutral colour for selling. Wood just is. It will 'go' with any colour scheme.
While it would be a pain to sand and repaint it again, if I had the money I would gut it, or if I didn’t, I’d repaint it. The layout and shape of modern kitchens are so different from 70’s kitchens, that no amount of ok condition older styles can look like it. A little more modern kitchens have cabinets up to the ceiling, a little more than that has an open space plan, and the most modern has different shaped cabinets altogether (essentially floor to ceiling closets). Of course while all this does depend on money, an outdated kitchen, while stylistically beautiful with the clean wood, can be a sign that the home is not kept up to date on repairs or renovations. Since kitchens and bathrooms sell the house, it would be a hard sell compared to a similar property with a new kitchen.
I'm 63 and I have always loved painted cabinets. It's one of the things I look for in house hunting and if they aren't already painted, I paint them myself. Ha.
63 year old speaking here, our generation only paints cabinets that are beyond hope because we know that the paint will chip and scratch and five years from now you would be saying how dated the paint color is. Those are good quality and in good shape, wait until they need an overhaul. Also, didn’t the old knobs match all of the new appliances? Anyway, your mother in law has beautiful, quality pieces that needed your editor’s touch but it’s not cheap, trendy stuff from Hobby Lobby! Thank heavens!
Her antiques have really just been able to shine through with all the makeovers. I don't remember seeing them before but now they are right there, front and center, and you're right,... not from Hobby Lobby or Homegoods! And better yet, they all have deep memories for her.
I am team wood if the wood is good quality. It is natural and beautiful. As a renter I only have cheap melamine which I have painted in my favourite colour.
It's all gorgeous and that island took my breath away❤️ Cottage core has its roots in English decorating and unpainted wood is a constant but so is the eclectic touch of throwing in painted wood. Maybe paint the uppers white. White kitchen cabinets are such a classic that it never goes out of style. I think a dark color would make the area look too small and to me, upper dark cabinets are depressing because they absorb all of the light. As I've gotten older, I realize I need much more light to be able to see (even with my trifocals on) 😭 yes....trifocals. This series has been a fantastic journey of Sunday's that have been so enjoyable. Thank you so much for letting us participate. Five stars!
I am surprised by how many people like the natural wood even though it goes well with the island. I guess it is easier for a buyer to paint, if they choose, without sanding etc. to remove a color they don't love, BUT I bet if people saw these cabinets painted, they would prefer the new look. Maybe it is also because your MIL is an antique collector that people prefer the natural wood for her. Another great job. Did the sodas go in the fridge when the new fridge arrived? Looks like the fridge was too wide for the cabinet to remain beside it. Love all her ceramics! Can't wait for next week's episode!
I'm so glad you left the cabinets with their original finish. Painting them would have created a maintenance burden for your in-laws. Factory finishes are so much more durable than what you can do on-site.
this whole series is aesthetically pleasing, yes I definitely think you should paint the cabinets to tie everything together, but the wood vibe isn’t too bad either
I thought I wouldn't like the wood cabinet but the finished look is actually super nice!! and she can always decide to paint them at a later date if she changes her mind ;) That island was such a good find, I love me a good marketplace bargain!! Great job as always!
I’m so enjoying these! Love what you’re doing for the moms! I’m not 55 yet, not sure how “old” that makes me, I enjoy painting and like painted kitchen cabinets because It gives me a homey quaint feel. However I think with the wall color being what it is that the wood is best. Painting the lever doors did make them invisible. Looking forward to the next video.
For a cottage look - a vote to paint the cabinets in the same color as the walls - to create a clean visual line. THEN paint the bottom of the island in the darker accent color (like Hale Navy) - to ground the space. Try the garbage can at the end of the cabinets instead of the island. For storage add lined baskets (with lids) on top of the cabinets to hold any larger pieces. Perhaps add a wood screen door to the back door.
Hello April, I love painted cabinets, too. (I'm an older lady by the way, :) :) )That said, I think these appear to be in such good condition, I would not have painted them. They look beautiful with the rest of the decor! I have so enjoyed this series. This is just my style! Take care, and be well
This kitchen looks amazing. I love the new hardware, appliances and the sink. The paint looks great. It's great that you took it upon yourself to paint the ceiling too. A lot of hard hard work. I understand your desire to paint the cabinets but honestly unpainted wood fits her lovely kitchen. JMO. Great job-great video. P.S. The makeover of your parents house was wonderful. I did see the final video. Looking forward to Season 2!!!🔥🔥🔥😍
I’m 57, I say leave cabinets as is! We built our house 20 years ago and mine are the same color. I feel like they are classic. I do like the new jobs though! Edit: jobs=knobs
I do prefer the wooden cabinets with the other colors. Such a lovely kitchen. I would love to know her reactions. I’m sure they were constant and appreciative. Your patience and understanding in letting her make her choices…. And respecting them shows how much you care about her and the space. I have enjoyed both these series so much!
How wonderful for your mother in-law to get new matching appliances. Everything looks wonderful. Yes the ceiling needed paint. I keep editing because I love something else. The water heater door really helped. Not painted on the cabinets because they will always chip.
April, I really liked the video and you did an excellent job of helping your MIL in her kitchen. It looks fresh and certainly not dated especially with the new major appliances. I’d vote to just leave the cabinets as-is as I feel the wood tone lends itself more to a cottage-y feel. I’ll be looking forward to the last video next Sunday. 😀
Hi April, You and Jackson did a great job on her kitchen!! Just a thought, spray paint that small cabinet that houses her drinks that's next to your mother in law's fridge. I would paint it the same color as the walls and move it forward a bit. I'm older so I like the wood cabinets. They will always be in style whereas other colors will go out of style. I also love the island. Such a great buy!!!!
I'm old, 68, and I love anything wood. To us it's criminal to paint over solid wood. Although im not a fan of the honey oak. But I have to say I'm learning to lean to painted wood items...😄😄
Natural wood cabinets are gorgeous if the are new-modern like walnut. Older cabinets are much nicer painted, otherwise they just look dated, especially when they have the yellow undertones. To each their own though!
The kitchen came out so good! Cannot wait to see the full tour! I think painted cabinets would have looked very cool and moody but once you do it you can't undo it. It's a big commitment and I think the wood tends to be more timeless in the end. It came out great and I think it all came together very nicely!
This turned out so nice. I’m 51 so close to your parents’ age most likely, and being tired of painted cabinets at this point, I too prefer that they be left unpainted if the wood looks nice. And in this case, I think they look great. They definitely have a 1990s PNW vibe, which fits the location and cottage look so well. You did a great job with all of it. And thank you for painting the ceiling! A crisp white ceiling also makes such a difference in a home. 😊
I actually agree with your mother in-law it's better as is but I would have changed the counter tops.. it's all beautiful and it shows her character in everything
I like the wood cabinets. I might consider painting the inside of the cabinets white or a light color to reflect light as this is often suggested for older adults.
What do you think... would you like the cabinets better painted or left AS IS? My vote is definitely painted navy!
I vote for as is ☺️
For this particular kitchen, I vote as is.
I am usually one who would say "paint em!" But those are pretty nice. I would keep as is.
I think left as is works
She should definitely keep the wood!
You and your husband are a great example of loving children to your parents. What wonderful make overs for both parents. Thank you for these videos.

I don't know about blue or sage green. To specific for resale. I would have gone with white.
Personally I like the wooden cabinets much improved with the new hardware
I’m 49 and I’ve always loved wooden cabinets. In a 100 year old house, painted cabinets do not translate well. It’s like a beautiful period house with a plastic-looking kitchen. Her cabinets are beautiful. I’m glad you left them the way they are.
I'm 26 and like the wood look haha! Painted can feel really cheap home reno vibes sometimes (obvi not always)
Me too!!! I love the wood look! My kitchen was completely redone and I went with walnut cabinets and matte black hardware and a big matte black range hood
This turned out gorgeous and I actually like it with the wooden cabinets in the end with the green pots, plants and lighter walls it's kind of a nice light boho feel.

agree, painted cabinets don't hold up well either. the blue and green paint colors popular 2-3 years ago now read as super dated. wood is timeless :)
Maybe it's because I'm "old" (57), but I love the natural wood on the cabinets. The kitchen is beautiful!
I’m 46, and I LOVE natural wood colors. I hate how everything gets painted now. I think I’m in between young and old, but I’m with MIL on that one.
I can see that I really lost this poll 🤪
For resale purposes, I think it’s best to leave the cabinets unpainted. While I like the navy color, it is very taste specific and won’t necessarily appeal to a wide range of buyers. Also, happy that she decided to invest in the stainless steel appliances!
Natural wood, I've always preferred that, all 7 decades of my life. Remember that wood paneling came on the scene in the 1960's, it was the poor man's alternative to real pine boards on the walls. Beautiful end result!
Thank you for the shout out April! That was so very kind of you!! I really appreciate your support. The kitchen turned out beautifully! I'm honored that my lavender is in there! :) (Hope you had fun on your trip! )
Those look like lovely products! All the best.
You're products are the best, Pam! I'll be back in there as soon as I finish mine!
I am older and I definitely like the wood best.
My daughter is a Carpenter and would be so upset to paint cabinets. I do agree that seeing the natural wood for me is what I would want too
Definitely wood! Painted cabinets show every ding. In a working kitchen wood stands the test. This is from someone who has had wood then painted. In our new cabinets we knew we wanted wood.
Yes! Mine are dinged up. Such a hassle! The dings make them look dirty.
I like the wood cabinets and I honestly like them more with the crown molding off. I only like crown molding when it actually hits the ceiling
My preference would be to box in that unused space above the cabinets. It’s a dust collector if left open.
Mother -in- law is right wood is always in trend. But sage colour would look cute 😀
Older person here, and I love the wood look, lol.
One of your best makeovers yet! Painting over the red made a huge difference. I think the wood cabinets work for this house.
I'm 61yrs young and I vote for painting the cabinets.
I love the wood cabinets!! Unless they’re in awful shape, painting cabinets is always kind of….expected.
Great idea. Frosting the glass of that little cabinet could help visually simplify too.
Normally, I like painted cabinets, but this wood has a very nice tone and the design is modern enough that I would vote to keep them unpainted.
I think this looks fabulous and the wood cabinets are perfect for her. Let the next owners paint them if they want. Great Job April!
Thank yoU!
I’m so glad that my parents invested in quality, stainless steel pots and pans when they got married in 1950, because I’m still using them,72 years later!
Oh wow! That's a great investment!
Great job
I like natural colored wood tones. I think the room would pop if they were painted. I do have wood tone in my house also. Great job!
The wood definitely is better than painted
I really like the natural wood !!! Definitely better than painting them.
I like the cabinets left as is. Navy would darken the space.
28 here and love the wood cabinets 😍
It looks so beautiful!! I like the idea of painted cabinets, but I think the wood looks lovely here. Love that she got the appliances she wanted.
Definitely the natural wood.
As-is. Always love pretty wooden cabinets. I'm in my 40's. Haha. 😂
The wood looks nice at the end 😊
I vote wood cabinets. I would prefer painted but the wood just fits much better with the cottage theme. I feel painted cabinets would make the space too modern. Can’t wait for the final tour and the next project!
that's a good point!
I personally prefer the wood cabinets vs paint.
I love that you did this for your family. Best kind of gifts 💕
I'm 48 (don't know if that puts me in the older group, ha!), and I like regular natural wood. I don't follow trends and I am all about neutrals.
I'm 26 and I say natural wood is always my favorite
Leave as is....she is correct speaking as an "older" person. And she will be living with it. If & when she sells, the new owner will make that decision. Don't spend the extra time & money if she's happy as it is.✨✨

I’m old too, and when I was young, I painted cheap fruitwood cabinets and never regretted it.

Wood. I’m old. 😉 And that sink is amazing.
I agree with your MIL. I’m 56 and I always prefer wood. I hate when beautiful wood is painted over😊
I like wood cabinetry as it is timeless. Nice find on the island!
I like the wood cabinets as they are.
Wood is beautiful on its own.
That island was such a perfect Marketplace find!
Love the wood cabinets! Am youngish. And also love the greenware in the mudroom!! 💖💖💖
As is. 👍 I love the wood.
i agree with your mother in law.
39, and i like the wood 😄. Wouldnt mind if they were painted but i love the natural look of the wood with all the green accents.
I'm 63 and I have always loved painted cabinets. It's one of the things I look for in house hunting and if they aren't already painted, I paint them myself. Ha.
I love what you did to the kitchen. Tell your MIL that I love Longaberger baskets and Jadiette dishes.
Can't wait to show you more of the jadeite in the last episode next Sunday!
I love her wood cabinets.
The cabinets enhance the island, new caraway pans and all her pottery and of course lavender.

I like that you didn't paint the cabinets, it adds to the cottage feel. Those caraway pans are so pretty 😍
Aren't the pans so pretty!?
The wood cabinets definitely look great. I feel like painting them would cheapen the look.
I am surprised by how many people like the natural wood even though it goes well with the island. I'm so surprised at how many voted wood!
I thought I wouldn't like the wood cabinet but the finished look is actually super nice!! and she can always decide to paint them at a later date if she changes her mind ;) That island was such a good find, I love me a good marketplace bargain!! Great job as always!
Absolutely! They still aren't sure if they want to stay or move in the near future anyways!
Beautiful job and you're so brave working with your inlaws! 😂🤣
With your hard work, I love the wooden cabinets as it. The kitchen looks amazing and fresh with all those flowers !
I'm 66 and I love both, paint and wood! I think the answer is to paint the lower cabinets and wood on top.
Take care, and be well
I prefer the wood too (I am 61 so I guess that's old 😉)
This kitchen looks amazing.
Someone mentioned updating the countertops instead and I think that would really make them look even better.
I prefer the wood cabinets. I would like a lighter stain on them but I appreciate the wood so much. You have done an amazing job.
I love the wood. It's timeless. I'm 63.
Wow, what an incredible transformation! It feels so fresh and welcoming. A wonderful space to cook in.
Great job; it's very calming. I would keep the wood plus it matches with her island.
I'm old, 68, and I love anything wood. To us it's criminal to paint over solid wood. Although im not a fan of the honey oak. But I have to say I'm learning to lean to painted wood items...😄😄
I love it with the wood! Everything looks so calming!
Her pottery collection has me drooling! Beautiful.
I like the wood cabinets. I might consider painting the inside of the cabinets white or a light color to reflect light as this is often suggested for older adults.
Congrats to your inlaws for getting the appliances they wanted. Looks great.
