What an insightful interview. And I can see there is still some residual pain,. The album resonated with all of us, because we could see real people and the challenges they had. Really I think people will listen to these songs in 100 years and see what an amazing confluence of artistry and youth came together to create a memory of the 20th century Rock. Great interview! Really, bottom line is, Stevie owes a great deal of her success to Lindsey, and Fleetwood Mac owes their great success to both Lindsey and Stevie! ❤❤❤😊
Say what you will about Lindsey, he takes the high road in this interview. If he didn’t insist on the package deal with he and Nicks joining, where might she be now? One of those cases of right place, right time in terms of meeting Fleetwood…
Mick Fleetwood only wanted Lindsey Buckingham when he asked him to join Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey had to talk them into taking Stevie and said he couldn't do it without her joining. It's important to remember that, especially in recent times when Stevie threw Lindsey under the bus.
She was in love with him and he married someone else. It would be too much heartache for her to be in a band with him singing their old songs together. I couldn't be in that situation either. Sometimes, you just have to move on whether you want to or not.
That's true, but she became the 'American Idol'. She is loved throughout the world. She never left them, though she easily could have. Now, they are not leaving her.
He was an asshole to her. He hurt her really badly. If anything, he's in her shadow. You see who Fleetwood Mac picked when the ultimatum came down, right?
2:55 Lindsey's wrong on this. The last Fleetwood Mac Album with Bob Welch, Heroes are Hard to Find, went top 40. So Buckingham and Nicks stepped into a major band with a built in audience. And yes, they did take the band to another level in terms of sales.
They sold just enough albums in the Bob Welch era, so that the label woudln't drop them (around 300-400k units at the time...later on as the band became famous some of those albums earned Gold certification), but the same time they weren't beloved by the label. Mick Fleetwood even said such things in his autobiography. They were kind of the equivalent of the mediocre worker who does just enough NOT to get fired, for lack of better analogy.
Even though the Bay area has had a lot of transplants from other parts of the country that made the bay area their home musically, we have also produced a lot of home grown talent as well. I made a list once and it is unbelievable. I have watched so many of these great artists play in local clubs when they were just starting and it has been wonderful and I feel so blessed.
I agree! It was great living in the Bay Area back then! So much music and hot as hell places to go see those great bands! I'm 71, still in the Bay Area and still regularly going to shows! I'll stop when I die. Till then I'm all in......
I just love how he fought for SN to be in the band then she fired him from Fleetwood Mac. I don't have a lot of respect for her anymore. Christine McVie had the voice of an angel, just a beautiful person with a beautiful voice
Lost in a sea of purple waves are rising higher, searching for a moment, somewhere in the tide, You and I had blue skies, When the sun was high, You flowed in like a whisper, Felt like I was in a dream, Together like adjoining rivers, Forever a part of the same streams, You are every song ever written, The apple of my eye, With a heart as deep as an ocean, And golden hair that flows when you smile
He strikes me as intelligent, humble, thoughtful, respectful and articulate here, not really what I was expecting given all the publicity over getting kicked out, but I don't follow it that much. FYI, I had absolutely no idea about the personal drama at the time - Rumors was just a great album. I think he reads a little too much into why people connected with it.
Exactly! As the late, great Larry Light (look him up) would say, it's not "what" Fleetwood Mac is, it's WHO is Fleetwood Mac. . . the essence of branding! But very much YES, the very pinnacle of honest rock music.
Gifted guitar player, musician, composer. Perhaps today, an album like Rumors would have quadruple in sales due to all the buzz around their love affairs
Another guitar virtuoso, Buckingham was responsible for the studio sessions and musical arrangements for FM's 1975 album, "Rumours," "Tusk," "Mirage," "Tango in the Night," "The Dance," and "Say You Will," and in 2011 received the prestigious Les Paul Award for Technical Excellence and Creativity. I find it ironic that Tango in the Night and The Dance were intended to be Buckingham solo projects, but pressure from bandmates for new FM material forced Buckingham to acquiesce. Buckingham was the driving force behind FM's success from 1975-1987 (when he left the band), and from 1996-2017. He rescued FM from what would have been musical obscurity, and made his former bandmates very wealthy. His firing was a crime.
Rumors was great because of the music. It wasn't really the story of their lives that drew anyone to the album. Most people didn't know much if anything at all about them. Back then we barely even knew what musicians looked like unless you saw them on Midnight Special or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. That is why Lindsey didn't even know who Mick Fleetwood was when he saw him. We did get to know what they looked like but only after Rumors went rocketing through the charts... and stayed there.
Funny, I'm about the same age as Lindsey and loved Rumors but I never knew anything about the private stuff that was going on inside the band - I suspect most fans didn't either.
I've loved Fleetwood Mac since I was a kid growing up in the 70s. On a different note, when will AXS-TV return to Verizon FiOS? I miss that channel so much!
I keep seeing people post that it took two guitarists to replace Lindsy. That is not exactly what happened. The fact is Lindsy overdubbed a lot of guitar parts. I loved his voice and he was a fabulous guitarist 🎸
Now this is a great interview. He’s actually coming across very well. I will always believe he and Stevie will always love each other. They are each others keeper of memories and shared youth
I doubt that. They were breaking up when they joined FM. She spent 2 decades heavily addicted and never moved past her wronged woman breakup songs. Wish he had left FM after Tusk instead of putting so much energy in a band he outgrew.
All stuff I've heard but this is current and he's so real. Love that man.
The song "Go Insane" in all its forms...❤❤❤
Bob Welch: he wrote "Hypnotized", one of Fleetwood Mac's greatest songs.
Yes he did.... so many other facts that don't belong in this thread.... but thanks for sharing.....
@kzmaven7478 yes I really liked the Bob Welch era
Im 58......My all-time favorite Group!
Lindsey is a classy guy, brilliant guitarist/ songwriter, very emotional, just as any brilliant musician should be... he was a major influence from the "shadows"
Dan Rather as a rock music aficionado is still funny. But he does a great job. Someday, these interviews will be something we can no longer replace.
It's amazing how destiny can weave some individuals lives into something truly magical! LOVE everything about Fleetwood Mac!
Without Lindsey and now Christine there’s not much left
_There's nothing left._
@@Terp311 With any of the classic lineup members missing, it's a sham. Fleetwood Mac is dead. They had a great run but it was over, for good, once Christine died.
"Buckingham Nicks" was a pretty great album I owned at the time. One could see the great talent and potential there...
Crystal is lovely
I've always enjoyed listening to this man, Lindsey Buckingham. He's well spoken, very well spoken, insightful, and.......honest. Love listening to him.
Lindsay is a musical genius. Besides all the FM albums my favorite solo album of his is Under the Skin.
It is nice that Lindsey can still speak fondly of Stevie. But Lindsey hasn't needed Fleetwood Mac since he first left the band. He's one of the all-time great Rock composers. The music he's created compares favorably with any of the big names.
I've never listened to any solo Buckingham work. Never heard it.
@@spaceghost8995 Buckingham has a lot in common with Richard Thompson and Bruce Cockburn. Three guys who can play solo acoustic as well as electric with a band. The three combined only have 3 Top 40 US hits while managing to release a combined 51 studio albums.
@@bobturnley2787 It makes for an interesting discussion about commercial success vs artistic merit. Not that I'm suggesting Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen or Neil Young lack artistic merit, but they have all consistently switched between electric and acoustic as well and have hit songs and albums coming out their ears. I guess there wouldn't be too many "average" music fans who hadn't heard of those 3 but (his role in Fleetwood Mac aside) Lindsay, Richard and Bruce not so much. There's clearly a very fine line (and maybe a lot of luck) between great music that becomes very successful music and great music that is hardly known outside of a particular artists fan base (whatever size that might be).
@@lutherleeboggs2260 Promotion plays a huge part in mass appeal. Buckingham has plenty of name recognition but was never able to establish himself as someone who could get radio play without fitting into popular trends. Thompson and Cockburn have ignored popular trends since the 80's and still manage to release albums on a regular basis.
I will never forgot when i watched the dance concert how amazing his guitar skill when singing go your own way that is some talent
He’s very impressive.
He's a talented guy. Stevie fills stadiums. Just saw her. He can't. He helped her get to where she is.
You are correct she fills stadium but he was the true north of one of the greatest bands of modern times. Without him there would have been no Fleetwood Mac as the world understands the band.
What an insightful interview. And I can see there is still some residual pain,.
The album resonated with all of us, because we could see real people and the challenges they had. Really I think people will listen to these songs in 100 years and see what an amazing confluence of artistry and youth came together to create a memory of the 20th century Rock.
I wish Stevie and Lindsey could be friends, but it seems like there is some strong animousity between them, even in 2024.
I remember that year very well going to Broward Community College in Davie Florida...rode with my older Sister in her 60s GM convertible that was bought for $50 with bald tires.
Kids, we had it made back then listening to Rumours
Good time to be young in FL!
RIP Peter Green
@@greenmanalishi6963 yep and Danny kirwan too
One guitar player sounded like an entire band.
Intelligent guy, phenomenal musician. Mick, Christine, John, Stevie, Lindsey - together, as mysteriously beautiful/destructive as the universe itself.
I love the Buckingham Nicks album!
Mick Fleetwood only wanted Lindsey Buckingham when he asked him to join Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey had to talk them into taking Stevie and
said he couldn't do it without her joining.
😮@@Sandra-xw2wpSo he has to go ? If it wasn't for Lindsay Stevie would have never been in the band.
That's true, but she became the 'American Idol'. She is loved throughout the world. She never left them, though she easily could have. Now, they are not leaving her.
Lindsey has never said anything negative about Nicks , unlike she has about Lindsey, must be hard living under the shadow of a genius.
He was an asshole to her. He hurt her really badly. If anything, he's in her shadow. You see who Fleetwood Mac picked when the ultimatum came down, right?
Lindsey ♥️♥️♥️what a talent
Very good watch.
Rumours is a masterpiece and always will be.
Incredible group still relevant today
Great music lasts forever
Why are we recycling old interviews? This is April 2015, nearly ten years ago and a LOT has changed since then. A LOT.
Love Fleetwood Mac .Great interview
This obsession with Rumours. Great album but there are so many other chapters from this great musician.
I am originally from the Bay Area
I agree! It was great living in the Bay Area back then! So much music and hot as hell places to go see those great bands! I'm 71, still in the Bay Area and still regularly going to shows! I'll stop when I die. Till then I'm all in......
such a well prepared interview, fresh and unheard of before questions...
😂
Living Legend !!!
Lindsey is a class act and good guy
The Buckingham-Nicks album deserves much more acclaim. It still has not even been released officially on cd or reissued officially on lp.
What's crazy about Fleetwood Mac is that they were able to be as successful as they were despite all of the drama in their relationships.
Great interview!
A humble sweet guy.
Dan Rather is 93! Let that soak in. He is incredible.
I didn’t realize that. He is impressive.
Klasse Interview, sehr sympathisch
Its absolutely possible for a new mac. When the right material and vibe are there.
See how Stevie repaid Lindsey later on!
DON'T CARE.
I just love how he fought for SN to be in the band then she fired him from Fleetwood Mac. I don't have a lot of respect for her anymore. Christine McVie had the voice of an angel, just a beautiful person with a beautiful voice
brilliant musician
Lost in a sea of purple
waves are rising higher,
searching for a moment,
somewhere in the tide,
You and I had blue skies,
When the sun was high,
You flowed in like a whisper,
Felt like I was in a dream,
Together like adjoining rivers,
Forever a part of the same streams,
You are every song ever written,
The apple of my eye,
With a heart as deep as an ocean,
And golden hair that flows when you smile
I want a hard hitting Straight Outta Compton style biopic for Fleetwood Mac.
Lindsey brought Stevie into Fleetwood Mac with him
Lindsey looks great! Many say he's underrated, but when you're in one of the greatest bands in history, its a normal outcome
Lindsey seems like a really likeable person.
EVERY song on that LP was a hit.
He essentially was playing the part of two or more guitarists. For Practicality’s sake, and for having a full sound, two guitarists were used in several iterations.
Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac was a Rock Band (Not Lindsey 70s Pop Band) and is alumni to Detroits Grande Ballroom MC5, The Stooges, SRC,Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac ...... The Birth of Hard Rock and Punk ....
How many people know that Black magic woman was written by Peter Green era Fleetwood mac?
“I’ve got a mind to give up living”
@@greenmanalishi6963 The Grande Ballroom story check it out man it will blow your mind on rock history
Wow, Lindsey is so articulate, never knew that! And shame on Mick, he brought him into the band and then pushed him out. What's with that?
When was this interview please? Cheers.
This interview really humanized Lindsey Buckingham for me. I always thought he was rather aloof. I could’ve gotten that idea because I read mainly about Stevie Nicks. I like him and he’s sweet. Thank you Lindsey. PS Dan rather did a superior job, asking questions of the right type, ‘so you were writing a soft rock novel then?
I love Lindsey as a person and he's my musical hero. My life's dream would be to jam with him some day
He is a solid person and incredibly gifted guitarist. His tone and style is all his own.
@@jaytrees7304 so exactly right
I personally love the Tusk album
Lindsey was the best guitarist in Fleetwood Mac... enough said...

Sad what Stevie did to him. 😢
