yeah your instinct got it correctly ;-) there is journal Manly read at 49:42 that show The madman when was a kid was treated with fear/anger by the foster mother who adopted him. It show as a kid he wanted to be a scientist and did something completely wrong (probably acted like sid but instead of toys he "played" with animals/pets) and laughed at something he shouldn't (probably death's in slasher/splatter horror movies - I bet on SAW series - the father allowed him to see and so the kid was angry when his "fun" was taken away) Problem degenerated because he was never taught *why* what he was doing was wrong and instead the foster mother beat him/acted cruel to him trying to make him stop. Then he started acting "normal" to get by and don't get punished.
It's really the kid from toy story, he's just older now.

The best thing about it being in the doom engine is that you have a decent walking and running speed haha sick of those horror games where there's something chasing you and the most your character can muster is a brisk jog

The enemies are great - dog guys around every corner, the chainsaw one, & those little fast ones. The atmosphere is so horrible & well done - seeing all those victims strung up everywhere or tied in chairs is terrible & then it becomes numbing. I'm sure if you hadn't killed the ones behind the prison doors, they would have opened & rushed you. Great job so far!!
The only issue is the voices (they would deserve subtitles...) but this game is interesting. Reminds me of Tusks or whatever that movie was called about the guy being slowly turned into a walrus...

This is really cool to see... haven't even seem much gameplay as I type this out... but the fact that a modern game is made on the ancient DOOM Engine from back in the day is really cool to see.... just goes to show how timeless DOOM will be, not just because of the game itself, but for what it did for the entire gaming community

i was under the impression that there were already a few, just more inspired by ye old first person dungeon cralwers.
There was one made years ago by ID... it was ported to the DS. Think it was called Orcs and Elves.
There was actually was a doom turn based RPGs on my old flip phone, it was awesome and was also very self aware

@@ProdPluieDeSang Great job man! you really caught well the athmosphere =). the moment that I think my attention was captured by your game and made me thinking "this is different..I want to see more" was when at the start Manly found the dead mangly body then hear the sound of the monster (jaguar?) chasing him. And you only realize later that *he can't outrun him* made me jump on the chair without seeing it XD.
I'll be honest however when I first see Pc imprisoned and seeing the corridors I expected the Techno chainsaw dude from white finger come out to chase him at some point.

Love how so many games try to mimic the retro aesthetic when they could just make it for real using old engines.
Doom is an exception, along with something like Half Life or Source based games or things with large modding scenes. Most game engines were made and remain in house back then (no common Unreal 4 stuff) used weird wizard hack magic to work with tricky hardware and games in general were hell to program for.
Sprite work and high quality PS1 tier graphics were also fairly difficult being arguably more harder to make than a much more advanced model with plenty of available tools today. This is why indie games have to try and "emulate" old techniques using newer tech to various results, and why if we get a source code leak like what happened to Mario 64 people can make a Mario 64 clone from scratch and the mod scene blows open.

Oh nice. I played the demo of this and I was on the fence of getting the full game. It's cool that you are diving into doom engine related mods. If you want to dive deeper into doom horror mods/Total Conversions, check out Total Chaos and Happy Times Circus 2.
Edit: Forgot to add The Cronus Camp for Wayward Boys. It's in the demo stages but looks promising so far.

Hey Manly, there's a really good horror game called No Delivery that I think is worth checking out. It would be great if you could consider playing it.
That game was great, brings back classic rpg maker games but the rng part just blows.
There were huge chunks of the game that appeared pitch black on my screen; I couldn't even see what he was fighting half the time.
The Doom modding community have been some of the most dedicated people I've seen in the modding world. A lot of work they've put out there has been absolutely incredible, and really shows their love for the game. It also speaks well of Doom itself and how versatile its format has been over the years

The dialogue is easily the scariest thing about this game, and not for the right reasons. Seriously, the game looks amazing, but the writing and voiceacting is so bad that it becomes genuinely painful to listen to it at times.
I think the voice acting is cheesy to the point of being funny. To me is the comedic balance to all the horror/gore in the game. But I understand if some people think it's cringy or painful.

Eh, I think it goes pretty well with the corny 80-90's slasher horror setting. It brings the whole thing together imo.
The bigger issue is definitely how low the villain’s voice is compared to the stock ost that plays throughout the entire game, I literally couldn’t understand a single thing they said
Let's be honest guys, if we go by what we see this is probably done by single developer with maybe a few friends and is a work mostly made out of love for Doom & Horror stories that taken some time to come up with.
the majority of people don't have a *good* Voice from the get go (that's a natural gift and probably most of us viewers if we "try" to say few of this lines will sound as cheesy or maybe even worst than the original voice). Also story writing is tricky you could end up with so much text (like my comment XD) just to say few things and that would not work well with a action game in this format. Let's just enjoy the idea and see Manly Axe grinding like a pro this failed dogs/crab creeps in the game.

Whoa, this game is dark. And by that I mean I ended up playing a mobile game and listening to the commentary, because for like half the video I couldn't make anything out. Was the lighting bugged, or what? It's fine in the menu, so I'm not sure why the rest is so dim.
