Nobody says we're not a republic. The question is our commitment to the "democratic" part.

What's clear is this. From the outset very human frailties resulted in a new country that was built on inequities that amount to a suicide pact. Such grotesque unfairness as part of the very foundation of a nation must eventually either be nullified or left to tear the structure apart.

A good take on this is Ann Cox Richardson's book, "How The South Won The Civil War."

about replacing that three-fifths clause: is that what section 2 "whole number of persons" of the 14th amendment is referring to?

Shall the most populous states such as California demand a new Constitutional Convention or secede from the Union if the demand is not met?

    We're a Republic not a democracy.

Moronic empty statements @hcwxars1. A democracy means either direct or indirect control of a government by the population of the state. A republic means a government is held by elected representatives and supreme power remains in the population of the state. Therefore we are a Republic Democracy as we, the population, elect representatives to manage the government and its laws. The issue persists that a minority in bodies have taken actions to eliminate our ability as a majoirty of the population to influence the government

we're an indirect democracy. but if you've given up on democracy then you can put your belief into practice by staying home on election day.

Splitting California will always create a bunch of conservative low density states and two high density progressive states at most. It isn't the progressives who want to split the state up.

We can't address any of this until we win in November. If democracy wins in November. And if we don't, we are in for the kind of system change that could bake in minority rule for decades. And we dont have decades to go through a Franco type authoritarian system of government like Spain. We have a climate emergency with a small window of opportunity to do something meaningful about it. Our kids and grandkids are already in a lot trouble and they are not even born. Now they also have to worry about their civil rights and a potential dictatorship??? Are you freaking kidding us???

While I agree with Ari’s fundamental analysis, he said after 35:20 “…all of this predated Trump.” Yet at 35:04 he brings up the Wisconsin Democratic governor elected in 2018 was hamstrung by the legislature, which was after Trump was elected by the Electoral College in 2016. Generalizations are sloppy communication and provide one’s detractors fodder for argument.

The one man one vote idea ignores the fact that a majority of adults lack the foresight and good judgment to save their Micawber Threshold and about 40% lack the foresight to avoid unwed parenthood. I want people making, executing and litigating laws elected and appointed by competent citizens even if it's a minority.

5 states have populations of less than a million, i.e., way fewer than my medium-size central Florida metropolitan area. Yet each of those 5 rural states critically has 2 Senators. No wonder they suck up so much federal funding.
