      I’m surprised there aren’t more videos on actual independent testing of the amounts additives/detergents on different gas station brands. From my understanding, most local gas stations will typically use the same gas as each other but have different additive packages that are required.
      This video is 9 years old and is most likely outdated but it does show Shell premium as having the most detergents: th-cam.com/video/ystuUJWae0Y/w-d-xo.html

    Definite Shell sponsored video here. While to a degree what they are saying is true, gasoline will clean on your valves; however with most modern performance vehicles using direct injection this is an absolutely MOOT point. No gasoline ever passes over the intake valves with direct injection therefor it is impossible to clean up any build up on them with any grade of fuel or even fuel additive. The crap that builds up on the backside of intake valves in a direct injection comes from a failing or poorly designed PCV system. It isn't varnished fuel it's oil particulate that passes through the PCV system and slowly builds up on the back of the valves. You would benefit a lot more from a catch can on such a system rather than spending more for a fuel grade you may not require. All gas suppliers have a gas similar to what Shell is hocking here, Chevron does Techron, PetroCanada does SuperClean...you get the point. Run the specified Octane rating for your call and it will be happy, car manufacturers aren't idiots when it comes to engineering. That being said never run a lower then recommended Octane rating or you will have a REAL bad day.

    Worked at a shell station a few years back, trust me its the same gas, shell doesnt deliver shell gas to shell stations, it comes from a local fuel dispatcher, the same local fuel dispatcher that delivers to most of the other gas stations in the area. Ours was Torissie, in the two years i worked there i never once saw a shell truck roll up and deliver gas. The additives added to the fuel might be different from company to company, but the fuel is the same depending on region. Let me also say i never once saw anyone add any additives to the fuel, they may have had those additives added beforehand at the dispatcher, but ive seen that exact same truck at the local wawa down the street. Im more worried about water, dirt, and other contaminants falling into the tanks when being filled or level checked (which we did daily, even in rain or snow) weve had to have our tanks pumped more than a few times due to excess water being in the tanks. Shell is good fuel, but so are other brands. Just some fuel for thought, pardon the pun.

    • @slimj091
      @slimj091 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Usually the additives are added to the gas in the trailer tank as it's leaving the fuel dispatcher. Much like when a contractor doing a driveway will call in an order with a concrete company for a specific mix with specific hydration level with specific additives. But you are right. From the pipeline gasoline is gasoline.

    • @muzallisam5068

      There is actually a science to it, high revs break loose carbon deposits. And yes it can damage things, if it's a big enough chunk but it'll happen whether you do or don't anyway. So Italian tune ups for the win

    • @ElSikario100
      @ElSikario100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Demonslayer20111 that's only true for port injected engines. On direct injection by revving high you'll be creating more deposits because there's virtually no way to for the engine to wash them away from the top of the valves. There's an excellent video explaining this. I'll attach the link later.

      It feels like a bull shit add because they never mention that the reason shell gas is a detergent gasoline. it is because it meets the top tier fuel standard. A fuel standard supported by a lot of auto manufacturers. I learned about the difference between cheap and top tier gasoline when i was trained by Honda at one of their corporate learning centers. Search up top tier detergent gasoline on google and it will give you a list of manufacturers that meet the detergent gas fuel standard.

      In the US that is unlikely.The minimum standards for additives in fuel is pretty good .Your A4 has Direct Injection. Fuel is not sprayed on the intake valves to do any type of cleaning. I have run every type of gas and my cars runs the same on any other them whether Shell, Mobile, Chevron or Costco. If you can tell running issue from brands Im guessing you have other issue. Modern computer controlled vehicles are designed to run good on any gas meeting the octane requirement.

    The truth is that gas in the states has so many additives that even the cheap fuel works pretty good at removing gunk. It also depends on what type of engine you have as well since some engines squirt fuel on the valves, which in turn reduces the gunk on the valves since it's cleaning them. And you shouldn't run premium fuel on a car that is not tuned to run on premium. You'd just be wasting money 😉

All to often I talk to people about this, they miss the differences in conventional oil's vs synthetic, engine mileage, oil change frequency and of course fuel. it would be interesting to see what you have to say about the various effects of these conditions. Ive never seen an educated individual do a full rundown. if anybody, id bet you can pull it off, and hit all the points. Thanks for this show, i really dig the info you guys put out.

    I don't know about Shell gas, but Premium gas is definitely better for your vehicle versus regular. Originally when I was putting regular gas, my vehicles began to feel sluggish and underpowered. After switching to Premium fuel, the sluggishness disappeared and the performance peaked (the SUV drove like new). In my case, premium gas made a world of difference.

      There's a few reasons that could be, spark plugs not being OEM, a lot of carbon build up creating higher compression, variable valve timing, etc.

    I put Shell's 92 octane V-Power in my 2018 6-Speed Manual Honda Civic LX Sedan since the car's first fill up around September of this year. It has the K20C2, a NA 4 cylinder engine that let's be honest. In comparison to Honda's L15B7, the K20C2 is weak but it still makes me smile. Think of it as "The Llittle Engine That Could". I drive up steep hills 5 to 6 days a week while being at 2k to 3K RPMs. While the air conditioner is on, if ever. Nearing 6000 miles on the odometer and I did do the engine break in procedure. I drive my car gently right away the moment I turn it on. After 20 minutes into my conservative drive, the engine oil is at operating temperature. When I am done driving I idle the engine with everything turned off except for the low speed fan, that has the air conditioner off. After 2 to 3 minutes, I shut off the fan before shutting off the engine.
    I have no problems but no doubt you'll be thinking "Your engine is new! Just you wait and see when the engine has more miles on it!"
    *Shrugs* I take care of my car and don't granny drive it or race it to death. Let me put it to you this way. 2K to 3K RPMs on the highway in sixth gear and 80 mph is at 3K RPMs with a light throttle driving the car. I never had to down shift except if I know the engine is going to lug then I downshift into the appropriate gear before that occurs. I do use Honda's shift points as reference to know when I shift my car. Can't forget to add I don't floor it when I drive up the hill. I downshift and light throttle up the hill. I don't want to hear something knocking underneath my hood.

    Say what you want about this being a Shell advertisement but I only use Shell gas in my 2015 Tacoma since I first bought it new with 0 miles before I bought that I had 06 Chevy Colorado. I have used many gasolines but since I started using only Shell (87 regular if your wondering) even in my Colorado I have always got good gas miles. And never felt any loss of power. Any time I put low grade fuel (kroger gas, Wal-Mart, HEB, etc etc...) I could feel the truck not have the same get up and go and they would burn through it quick. In my Tacoma I get about 310 miles before I have to fill up (fill up is always at 1/4 tank mark) and in my Colorado when I had it I would get about 330. So yeah I have a firm strong belief in good gas equals good power mileage and long lasting engine.

    From what I have learned over the years, avoid buying gasoline from a rinky dink station that is a lot cheaper than others, and run a seafoam clean through the vacuum line and fuel tank about once a year. Shell gas is really good, but it is usually about 20 cents more per gallon. If you want a clean engine, buy gas from a cheaper, yet reputable brand, and spend that saved money on a seafoam treatment.

    Wow! From the comments below, it seems like people are not liking this video. Maybe you guys need to visit Chevron, Mobile, 76, ARCO, etc to show that this is not just a Shell advert. Then again they would probably think you were doing an advert for each of those companies. Hmmmmm......what would be a great video is to pit the different companies against each other. The test would be to get a few barrels of gasoline from each of the companies. Do the equivalent of 100K miles of engine use using identical engines and the same oil. Run and maintain the engines the same way. Then see which gasoline company makes a "better" gasoline. Once you do that, you could pick one of the top companies and test between the different octane ratings to see if an engine that uses 87 runs "better" using 91. Unfortunately, I know from experience do not put 87 in an engine that requires 91..whooops.... And since, Pumphrey keeps claiming he makes a million dollars per episode in his Up To Speed videos; he should be able to fund this test easily. LOL

    My superbike won’t take anything but Shell 91 V-Power with Nitro+. Tried Chevron with Techron and Mobil 1 and my bike rides like shit. Went back to Nitro+ Shell and again, can’t keep it on the speed limit. Shit’s amazing. I put that in my cars too. Nothing else!
