Yes, Kevin sings, too. He’s a tenor, and did some harmonies here along with beatboxing and body percussion. It you stick with Pentatonix you’ll get a chance to hear him show out all his skills. Matt, who replaced Avi (bass in the beanie) in 2016 can really sing, too. Each and every member could be and is a tremendous solo artist, but all of the current members have an agreement that whatever solo work they pursue will be supported as long as PTX gets precedence. They have been singing as Pentatonix for 12 years and have a giant catalog of covers, originals, collaborations, Christmas music, and individual projects. Follow down this rabbit hole and we’re here for it!

Doesn't Kevin also play cello on the Imagine Dragons cover? And BTW, Avi was the bass/basso profundo. Kevin is actually a baritone.

    • @ShinyElfriend
      @ShinyElfriend ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bethhelminiak5063 Yes, Kevin plays cello in Radioactive, also: Dancing on My Own, Say Something, Perfect, Shallow, and Thank You (probably missed something, but that’s what I can think of off the top of my head). His solo work generally included cello or electric cello, too. He is, in fact, considered a tenor, but they all have unusually huge ranges - in an interview the group once claimed Kevin’s falsetto is higher than Mitch, (hard to imagine). I believe Matt is technically a baritone but is the bass of the group, Scott is a baritone, Kirstin is a mezzo-soprano, and Mitch identifies himself as a tenor, but let’s face it, these singers can all throw labels right out the window with their ridiculous ranges, lol

Has it really been 12 years? I remember seeing them on the sing-off as that was airing. It's great that the group has grown, accepted new members, allowed people to do their own projects without drama affecting (to my knowledge).

PTX revolutionized a cappella. After people get over the fact that they are doing these arrangements without instruments, the next question they ask is “can they do it live?” I’ve seen them in concert 2x and I promise you, they can! The second singer(with the beanie), is the bass in this song. His name is Avi Kaplan. He has left the group and was replaced by Matt Sallee. All of the other members are from the original group that was begun in 2011. They won an a cappella singing competition and have been going strong ever since. They are: Scott Hoying, baritone, Kirstin Maldonado, mezzo soprano, Mitch Grassi, beautifully high angelic voiced counter tenor, and Kevin Olusola, beatboxer, tenor, cellist and other awesome talents. They have over two hundred pieces in their catalogue and continually adding more. It is a deep rabbit hole, if you choose to take the journey. They have many loyal fans (Pentaholics) who will follow you if you do. Just subbed to hear more. Pick any song that interests you. You won’t be disappointed. By the way, they own Christmas music. Welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole! Came for the Mitch-slap and was not disappointed! Mitch is the one in the round hat with the high voice. The beatboxer does sing in some songs. His name is Kevin and he is one of the most talented individuals! He plays the saxophone, cello speaks several languages and graduated premed from Yale. His beatboxing is amazing. They are all amazingly talented together and individually. They have 3 Grammy Awards and a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. You will get a lot of recommendations, but if you pull up their catalog, just pick a song. Their covers are outstanding, and their originals are fantastic. You cannot go wrong with anything you pick. Welcome aboard the SS Pentatonix. You will find there are many stops along this cruise. This the OG of acapella groups, and all other current acapella groups can thank these people for making this ,"dead" genre big again. They are by far most popular with over 5 billion views on youtube, most decorated with 3 grammys and many more nominations including this past year, by far the most diverse both in who they are and represent, but also in the genres they cover. From pop to classical, from rap to edm, from country to r & b, christmas to jazz. Theyve done duets with superstars like stevie wonder to dolly parton (which they won a grammy for) and got shout outs from artists they covered like paul simon and brian may of queen. May i suggest for more listens to more of their early work to start with like bohemian rhapsody, dance of the sugar plum fairy, and daft punk with watching official video first followed by the private performance version where theres no microphones or mixing, just them and their voices proving its them and not studio trickery. Sugar plum fairy and daft punk they won grammys for. Also check out imagine where they cover john Lennons iconic song. Sit back and enjoy!

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on TH-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his TH-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on TH-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on TH-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23.
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Wow Avi is my favorite singer-songwriter working today. The amazing range of his songwriting abilities and the absolute beauty and control of his wonderful bass voice just cannot be beat. Suggest "When I'm a Fool" live from Sunset Sound studios,, "All is Well" official video with Joy Williams and the 7 layers live version with Avi alone. Also, "Change on the Rise" and "I'm Only Getting Started" .

Subbed for more PTX! I am here for the dive down the ptx rabbit hole! A few good ones to do next are 'Mary Did You Know' Kevin the black guy who is the beatboxer has a singing part in that, also 'Imagine' is amazing! Daft Punk and Bohemian Rhapsody are also good ones. If you do more PTX reactions you might encounter issues with blockages. Their label are really rabid about it and mostly it's the video that triggers the blocks so a suggestion for you to get around them I have seen other PTX reactors do that seems to work for them - Putting a filter over the video and lowering the opacity of the video helps as well as putting words all over the video like 'blocked due to copyright' or something like that - also pausing a lot (though rewind like 15 seconds or so to get back into the flow after a pause so you don't miss anything) can help keep it from getting blocked so much in case it's an audio bit that is triggering it but like I said, the video is usually the culprit. They have a HUGE collection of songs so you have a lot to catch up on but they are simply astonishing and anything you choose from their collection is bound to impress you - I have yet to hear anything by them that wasn't awesome!

Kevin, the guy who didn’t have a solo, sings in a number of songs.
Imagine, was the first song I heard with him having a solo, again another beautiful voice. They also do the Wall of Music( ???) in it……breathtaking for me.
    Hope you do more!

New subscriber, hope you will continue to explore Pentatonix. To get a feel for their versatility, check out their medley of Daft Punk songs (for which they won their first Grammy), their cover of Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King, their original Sing, maybe Mad World or Problem, Bohemian Rhapsody - or honestly any other title in their catalogue that catches your eye. Their cover of Gold or their Evolution of Michael Jackson medley will give you a sense of what they can do live as each was recorded live in-studio with minimal production. I’m always happy when a new reactor takes a look at PTX, hope you do more. Peace from Ohio …

Same acapella-type singing, but with a little different vibe. Start with "Man of Constant Sorrow," "Butts Remix," and "End of the Road (Boys 2 Men cover)."

You've just found 5 solo vocalists that work together working absolute music magic! 💞 (In fact, the bass in this song left after 7 years due to family and personal reasons & a new bass will be seen in videos from 2017 to present. He now has his own solo career & video channel! That's the only member change in their 12 fantastic years together!)

Congratulations on reacting to the best acapella group in the world!! They've been around for 12 years now and have a massive discography full of great covers and originals for you to choose from...and I really hope you do choose to check out a LOT more of their music. It's worth it.
    The members:
~1st singer: Scott Hoying, baritone. Scott has ( like all the group) has a 4 octave range and can take over the bass when the bass singer is singing verse or lead.
~2nd singer: Avi Kaplan, basso profundo. Avi is an opera trainer bass with vocals so low he often breaks speakers and has a wonderful rich warm singing voice. Avi left the group amicably in 2017 and has been replaced by Matt Sallee, another wonderful bass singer.
~ 3rd singer: Kirstin (Kirstie) Maldonado, mezzo soprano. Kirstie has also a 4 + octave range with a lovely, bright vocal quality. She changes her looks often along with her hair colour, which often confuses new viewers.
~4th singer: Mitch Grassi, countertenor. Mitch is a natural countertenor and has a 5 + octave range. His vocals so often stun people that we fans have coined a phrase for that shocked look when people get when they first hear him...Mitch Slapped! Mitch, like Kirstie, changes his looks often.
~5th member: Kevin Olusola, beatboxer, cellist, tenor. Yes, Kevin can sing and he's a tenor. He's pretty near genius quality. His beatboxing is amongst the best in the world, he plays both cello and sax at concert levels, his vocals are lovely and he also graduated pre-med before joining the group, speaks 5 languages and like all the group, songwrites.
I'm subscribing in the hope that you do check out more of this groups music.
Some suggestions: Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk medley, 90's Dance Medley, Imagine, New Rules/I Am That Somebody, Be My Eyes (original), Run To You(original), Evolution of Michael Jackson.

KEVIN OLUSOLA aka “KO” and was asked to join PTX to provide vocal percussion after Scott watched a TH-cam video of him “cello boxing” (beatboxing while playing his cello). KO is the classic over achiever of the group. He plays Cello, Piano, and Saxophone all at concert levels. He graduated pre-med from Yale, speaks Spanish and spent over a year in China where he became fluent in Chinese. He sings Tenor but vocals were not his strong suite when he started so he worked with other band members and a vocal coach until while on tour he would perform the featured vocals in "if I ever fall in love", (originally performed by guest artist Jason Derulo for the album and video). He also writes and produces music both individually and for the group. So, KO is more than “just the beatboxer”.

I’ve just subbed in the hopes that you will go down this Pentatonix rabbit hole, at least for a little while. They are an amazing group who “upgrade” the covers they do, and also have some epic originals. You might want to think of doing Sound of Silence next or for an original you can do “happy Now” which is fast and peppy, or Run To You, which is a five part harmony ballad. So I’m hoping to see you try more PTX, and if you do, then I’ll also bop in and see what the rest of your content is like. Cheers mate! 😊

Usually the bass is sung by Avi. He is absolutely incredible. In later videos Matt is the bass that replaced Avi.
Personal opinion I think Avi is the all-around better talent, but Matt is also amazing. I also think that Matt is actually the better fit for the group, again Imo.
However there will be times that you hear bass in the background while the actual bass is singing, that would be Scott (the blonde) taking over.

There are 3 A Capella groups that I say are equal and are the best out there. 1) Pentatonix, who won the third season of a singing competition called The Sing Off. 2) Home Free, who won the 4th season of The Sing Off. 3) Voice Play who most members (and they change members often) have backgrounds with Disney so they are very theatrical.

    Pentaholics Unite!
The song was written by Leonard Cohen in 1984.
In my opinion, the best version is performed by Jeff Buckley on his 1993 "Live at Sin-e" or 1994 "Grace" albums. I highly recommend listening to his expressive and soulful rendition.
Jeff is another artist who, like Eva Cassidy, has only reached wide-spread popularity posthumously. I only wish I had known about them in the '90s so I could have supported them.
