From what I managed to gather from the lyrics, this song is about Hungarian war-photographer Robert Capa, who died during the First Indochina War, more exactly in May of 1954 after jumping out of his jeep and running up the road to get a better photo of the troops advancing. In the process of doing so he stepped on a landmine and had his left leg blown to bits. "Taro" refers to Gerda Taro, his partner in love and war photography who was killed in 1937 while covering the Spanish civil war.

Years have passed and I’m no longer a teenager, but when I listen to this I still want to run far, far away and get to know our Mother Earth and the beautiful people I haven’t met yet. This video and song is magical.
Honestly, I think it's quite beautiful. I mean "Do not spray into eyes, I have sprayed you into my eyes." He's literally talking about how he doesn't need eye medicine because thinking of the image of his love is medicine enough. Not to mention how he talks about being closer to her upon dying.
I was listening to this song when I was 21 years old. Now I'm 30 and I'm back to this.. It still brings the same emotions and even today I can't describe these emotions in words
There are so many things I like about this song and about this video... the smiles, the games, the two pals making the rollercoaster turn with just their arms and legs, the two guys kissing freely in a Middle Eastern setting, the dignity of the child walking towards the camera as the truck's dustcloud engulfs him, the guy guiding the horse through the ocean as human curiosity trying to subvert nature. Beautiful symbolism, beautiful photography and beautiful song. What more can you ask for? D.R.

I am pretty sure that when alt j started to right it they were not thinking "hmm lets right an experience" no they were thinking "lets right a song" sorry i mean no offence but it is a song and what u r saying is bullshit.
+Baby White Walker i disagree. if a song is capable of going deeper and really hitting one's feelings then it transcends the scale of enjoyable listening and starts going into something that is a lot more in feeling rather than in hearing. Plus, several bands have said they consider their albums to provide an experience for people rather than just a listen. These include sigur ros, jonsi and Alex, Giles Corey and obviously godspeed you black emperor.
It's extremely rare to find a song that makes your emotion jump like this... Soo much love... Every listen gives me goosebumps and I feel tears building.... Tears of happiness.... Thank you Alt-J
I discovered this song a week ago. I've been listening to it everyday. At first, I was so enamored by the beat and the visuals and it made me so happy. Then, I imagined how beautiful the world and its people are Today, I am bawling because although our world is vast and gorgeous, we are the very same people who have atrocities done onto our brothers and sisters and it breaks my heart. I decided to finally look at the lyrics today and it confirms that notion. I then scrolled to the comments and see this was a love story in the midst of wars all around the globe. I will continue to listen to this song every day.
I'm in love with this song. It feels so tribal, and yet nostalgic for me. I listen to this and I feel and see all the things of what I did growing up. One of the best songs, I'll keep as a hidden treasure. 😊
The combination of the beautiful imagery in this video and the lyrics of war, love, and death makes me realise that we are a special part of nature. We are capable of the best nature has to offer, but we can also be the worst. The peaceful scene of those fishermen reeling in their nets on the undulating waves makes all the violence we bring to this world seem so pointless.
...every visual scene has simply been stolen and cut from the late 80s film titled "Powaqattsi' by Godfrey Reggio. If you like the images I'd strongly recommend watching the two films Koyannisqatsi and Powasqattsi...I found those two films life-changing and the point of them was to show how Our Planet is one organic entity and we need to respect it and each other.
This song takes me to a different world. One in which I am at peace. Replayed this so many times in a row. The video does complete justice, a beautiful journey from Sunrise to Sunset. Thanks to everyone's effort to bring this masterpiece to us.
After many years of knowing this song, I keep coming back to it from time to time. Each of its frames could make it to the best photo of the year. Happy to be alive in a time in which this song (and this video) exist.
If we don't, the world herself does. Ice ages and warmer periods have alternated each other for eons. Say four-and-a-half billion years or so? She doesn't like stagnation. No boredom. Please no boredom. ;~) She did away with dinosaurs and has no qualms doing away with mankind, the species that deems itself last in creation, ha ha ha ha ............
Yeah, I know, but I feel like it is too little too late. And still there is so much damage being done to it both buy us normal people and the more influential powers that be.
"...But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do not know you, and even though I may not meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you: I love you. With all my heart. I love you. -Valerie." -V for Vendetta-
lyrics Indochina, Capa jumps Jeep, two feet creep up the road To photo, to record meat lumps and war, They advance as does his chance -- very yellow white flash. A violent wrench grips mass, rips light, tears limbs like rags, Burst so high finally Capa lands, Mine is a watery pit. Painless with immense distance From medic from colleague, friend, enemy, foe, him five yards from his leg, From you Taro. Do not spray into eyes -- I have sprayed you into my eyes. 3:10 pm, Capa pends death, quivers, last rattles, last chokes All colours and cares glaze to grey, shrivelled and stricken to dots, Left hand grasps what the body grasps not -- le photographe est mort. 3.1415, alive no longer my amour, faded for home May of '54 Doors open like arms my love, Painless with a great closeness To Capa, to Capa Capa dark after nothing, re-united with his leg and with you, Taro. Do not spray into eyes -- I have sprayed you into my eyes. Hey Taro! comment like and subscribe
With all my degrees, professions and hypocritical thinking of how much I know about life, this song always reminds me of the fact that I know exact nothing.
I know right. Like it makes me feel wise enough to realise I am just fooling around assuming I know all of the necessities to be of inspiration to others while this song is always putting me back in place as humble as I should go on about living life. As stupid it can make me feel taking things for granted and ignoring the true essence of what really matters. Great song!
That weird sad feeling when you're sitting at your desk with your books waiting to be opened, but because of this song you just want to travel very far away and run and dance and swim ...

This is beautiful! If you can, listen to Blood flood part 2. There use to be an amazing fan made video years ago, I'm so sad to not find it. Nonetheless song is still amazing. Dissolve Me is a nice tune, too! 💕
Never will I learn the lyrics to this song. Each time I sing along I will create an improvised abstract masterpiece because that is the beauty of alt J songs
This song saved my life 8 years ago, I almost took my life. This video, this song , alt Is saved my life. I am happy know myself and feel pride in the journey I have made, this video always reminded me how we all suffer and find joy together. We are interconnected, one mirror broken into many pieces. Never give in and certainly never give up. I promise there is more than you will ever imagine .❤ love you whomever is reading this
just a hint.. the story is about Robert Capa and Gerda Taro becoming the most famous photographers during the war... they both lived , loved and died on the frontline.
All wrong. You haven't done your homework well... Taro died in Spain in 1937 crashed by a tank( not Robert Capa). Robert Capa was torn into pieces by a landmine In Indochina in 1954.
3:25 This shot is just pure beauty. You can look deep into their eyes, into their soul. Almost as if you can take a peek into their Lives. All humans are the same, just born into different times, and circumstances. We are privileged beyond imagination because of the internet, and we shouldn't take it for granted.
I remember standing in front of Robert Capa's photographs in Ho Chi Minh's war museum and listening to this song... Cried like a baby for 30 min straight.
"Do not spray into eyes - I have sprayed you into my eyes." That is one of the most beautiful lines I've ever heard. It is like Capa saying that instead of taking Taro's death as a warning, she still inspired him to keep on going. Both died doing what they were born for and were reunited in death.
:'( This song and the video clip made me cry... Life is so weird, I love you all, you, humans all over the world. Without Love we can't do anything. Peace. Sorry for my english. And Alt-J you are so talented, I love what you do, thank you for being yourself. Big Love To Y'all ♥

savionit your words mean everything for me, thank you. Happy Positive and peaceful life full of love. Love you and it doesn't matter who you are. Love y'all, . ♥
How do 10,000 people dislike this beautiful song/video? The films that this footage comes from are awesome. But just the song on its own is so amazing. I can't understand how anyone could dislike it.
@@michelsijtsma5308 Maybe, but can't people appreciate something tastefully and artistically done even if it's "not their bag" so to speak? I never get it when people can't do that. You know?
I understand! Apparently for many people simple, blunt kinds of music is what they can appreciate. Anything truly artistic and tasteful seems to be of a level they can’t grasp/ fathom. Thus far i absolutely love Alt-J’s Taro, Every little Freckle, Bloodflood. The best we can do is enjoy what we enjoy for it can be frustrating to try to open the ears and eyes of people who aren’t willing to open up to something new, something different. Perhaps while we’re listening others will pick up the vibe and ask ‘Which band is this, it’s amazinggg,’
I started to cry while listening to this. None of us are the same, we are all so different and that is something so beautiful! We are all works of art! I think with this video makes it clear, just how true that is!
Simply I cannot explain and understand what makes me feel, it is a duality between sadness and joy that is surprising, the video and the music is a perfect combination, and wonder as thousands of thoughts come to my mind questioning me about me, the world and above all, that it is as if I would be where I am and I am going somewhere strange which I love, in a long time hadn't found music that made me feel something more than joy, it is fascinating, I don't need hallucinogens if I have this song, I can stoped hear this. (I am using a translator)
You've elevated an already great song with your video. The way you have juxtaposed the tragic wartime story in the lyrics with these scenes of peaceful harmony has created something that really touches me deeply every time I watch it. This may sound cheesy, but it has brought me to tears more than once, and I simply want to say thank you for that. For me, this video is like a wise old man who does not lecture, but simply shows you something and lets you draw your own conclusions. All the death and destruction that are so essential to the "plot" of the lyrics are contrasted with glimpses of a world where the work of people like Capa and Taro is not needed, because there is peace. At the same time, there's all the empathy it creates in the viewer. You feel for Capa, but you also see the masses of human beings that, in other scenarios, might be refugees or soldiers or otherwise victims of war. Here you see them smiling, simply living their lives, and you start to see them not as some numbers on a television newscast, but as human beings. And when that hits you, it's a very powerful moment. I hope I could somehow get across why I love this video so much. It might not have been the intention at all and other people might see it differently, but to me it's a powerful statement about war, especially because of the contrast to the lyrics.
I bet I have watched this video well over a 100 times in the last several years.... It rips at my soul every time I watch... But I cannot get enough...
The imagery you’re looking at is from Godfrey Reggio, part of his movie “Powaqqatsi”. It’s a really powerful movie, second in the “Qatsi” trilogy. There’s so dialogue in his movies, only cinematics, and a really great musical score. I encourage anyone who finds these cinematics as interesting as I do to look up the “Qatsi Trilogy”, and explore Reggio’s work.
I paint, and my paintings were being exhibited in a gallery in Dhaka. A person came up to me and said my paintings remind them of this. This is how I found this wonder
This will forever be the best song ever made for me. The beautiful lyrics and track combined with the beautiful memories and nostalgia I have for it. It shan’t be replaced. Thank you ALT-J, my artist of the decade.
Something about this video makes me keep coming back to it. It was shot in the late 80's and makes me wonder what the people in the video might be up to right now and what all they might've been through considering we have come a long way in the last three decades. It is a weird feeling of nostalgia and "connection" if that's the right word.
This song has been added 10 years ago to all of my playlists: from the sad, the happy, the angry, and the peaceful ones. Back then, my English was absolutely terrible and I was just compelled by the beauty of the voice and the symphony. Last night it played on my phone as I was driving back from work and the lyrics popped up. To my surprise, “Taro”, after 10 years, became an entirely other song to me. I am a photo journalist for the news, and in certain situations am exposed to active shooters, raging fires and bomb threats etc. This song hit me like no other songs, and again, ten years after the first time I listened to it! I was able to relate to Capa and be reminded that the reality is, no matter how good the shot is, losing a leg or facing death is a reality. Once again, thank you Alt-J. Le photographe que je suis ne mourra pas.

The band Alt-J decided to release a song dedicated to this couple who loved one another and was also devoted to their work, Ultimately they paid this remarkable devotion with their life."
Thank you for this exciting Information
Goosebumps
omg 😟❤
Thank you for the information
Wow is there a movie?
I wanted to be a war artist once upon a time ( and a portrait artist) but here im in comments 😔
Years have passed and I’m no longer a teenager, but when I listen to this I still want to run far, far away and get to know our Mother Earth and the beautiful people I haven’t met yet.
This video and song is magical.

Same!
I share the same feeling
Amazing and true.
This song gives me a happy/sad feeling... I don't know how to describe it. It's a really weird, profound feeling...
Cactus Kid It's a gorgeous song, but the events it describes are so awful that it makes you almost feel bad for enjoying the song.
Honestly, I think it's quite beautiful. I mean "Do not spray into eyes, I have sprayed you into my eyes." He's literally talking about how he doesn't need eye medicine because thinking of the image of his love is medicine enough. Not to mention how he talks about being closer to her upon dying.
Cactus Kid I feel like that about Dissolve Me. It's almost like their songs teach you to feel new emotions
It feels like falling inlove.
That's it right there.
I always come back here when I feel depressed. It helps me to see how the world and people are bigger and worthier than sadness.
Truth.

Sometime, when you least expect it, you'll realize that someone loved you. And that means that someone can love you again! And that'll make you smile.
Brian you know you sound like a very sad hu-man?
So many years later…this still hits me in the heart. Thank you. Thank you so so much.
❤️ I came to comment section just to see if anybody has listened to this masterpiece in last 24 hours.

I was listening to this song when I was 21 years old. Now I'm 30 and I'm back to this.. It still brings the same emotions and even today I can't describe these emotions in words
Watching Alt-J perform this song live was soo life empowering; so beautiful
There are so many things I like about this song and about this video... the smiles, the games, the two pals making the rollercoaster turn with just their arms and legs, the two guys kissing freely in a Middle Eastern setting, the dignity of the child walking towards the camera as the truck's dustcloud engulfs him, the guy guiding the horse through the ocean as human curiosity trying to subvert nature.
Beautiful symbolism, beautiful photography and beautiful song. What more can you ask for? D.R.
I love you
Rockell65 Well thank you! D.R.

My dad passed away yesterday. We had great connection, I can’t believe that I won’t see him anymore and everything seems surreal…but when I listen to this song, I am calm cause I know he is in better place now. RIP
my condolences and stay strong, we've got a long way to go!
Your dad are in better place you can pass this
Last year I would listen to this song every day at least 3 times and i'm still not tired of it.
I HAVE IT ON REPEAT heard it like 10 times this music is just my WEED, THUG LIFE!
Little Joshi I've been listening it on repeat for 3 hours now. Today. Still cant keep up with the vocal.
What did you do while hearing 3 hours music ? :o
Little Joshi studying for exams
This isn't a song. This as an experience.
+CcBloom777 sorry man your probably a nice person, u have to be to like this music, and that is just the thing it is MUSIC and music is pretty much always a song!!!!
Sigur Ros's songs have definitely have that effect. Heima is my favorite
I stopped smoking thx to this tune... dancing through
❤
It's extremely rare to find a song that makes your emotion jump like this... Soo much love... Every listen gives me goosebumps and I feel tears building.... Tears of happiness.... Thank you Alt-J
same here, so much love for that song... all the best to you
I discovered this song a week ago. I've been listening to it everyday.
At first, I was so enamored by the beat and the visuals and it made me so happy.
Then, I imagined how beautiful the world and its people are
Today, I am bawling because although our world is vast and gorgeous, we are the very same people who have atrocities done onto our brothers and sisters and it breaks my heart.
True my friend true
The greatest tale the universe has ever told, the Human legacy.
...every visual scene has simply been stolen and cut from the late 80s film titled "Powaqattsi' by Godfrey Reggio.
Best part is that this video is fan made.
This video makes me want to cry. I love the world and its variety of cultures and landscapes...shame we are rapidly destroying it all...
If we don't, the world herself does. Ice ages and warmer periods have alternated each other for eons. Say four-and-a-half billion years or so?
She doesn't like stagnation. No boredom. Please no boredom. ;~)
She did away with dinosaurs and has no qualms doing away with mankind, the species that deems itself last in creation, ha ha ha ha ............
To put a positive spin on your comment, there's also a lot being done to save it.
Yeah, I know, but I feel like it is too little too late. And still there is so much damage being done to it both buy us normal people and the more influential powers that be.
China N It's too late to be pessimistic (it's a quote from the movie "Home") ;)
"...But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do not know you, and even though I may not meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you: I love you.
With all my heart.
I love you.

lyrics
Indochina, Capa jumps Jeep, two feet creep up the road
To photo, to record meat lumps and war,
They advance as does his chance -- very yellow white flash.
A violent wrench grips mass, rips light, tears limbs like rags,
Burst so high finally Capa lands,
Mine is a watery pit. Painless with immense distance
From medic from colleague, friend, enemy,
foe, him five yards from his leg, From you Taro.
Do not spray into eyes -- I have sprayed you into my eyes.
3:10 pm, Capa pends death, quivers, last rattles, last chokes
All colours and cares glaze to grey, shrivelled and stricken to dots,
Left hand grasps what the body grasps not -- le photographe est mort.
3.1415, alive no longer my amour, faded for home May of '54
Doors open like arms my love, Painless with a great closeness
To Capa, to Capa Capa dark after nothing,
re-united with his leg and with you, Taro.
Do not spray into eyes -- I have sprayed you into my eyes.

With all my degrees, professions and hypocritical thinking of how much I know about life, this song always reminds me of the fact that I know exact nothing.
Haha me too
I know right. Like it makes me feel wise enough to realise I am just fooling around assuming I know all of the necessities to be of inspiration to others while this song is always putting me back in place as humble as I should go on about living life. As stupid it can make me feel taking things for granted and ignoring the true essence of what really matters. Great song!
This song made me cry and smile at the same time. So beautiful!
That's exactly how I feel!! So happy to see this comment as I have tears in my eyes as I listen!!

So true.
That weird sad feeling when you're sitting at your desk with your books waiting to be opened, but because of this song you just want to travel very far away and run and dance and swim ...

This is my favorite song. Can't stop listening on repeat. The lyrics makes sense and the music is soothing to ears. An amazing work by ALT J! Love from India.
They are touring. Try to go to UK and see them live. It's mesmerising.
The years go by, and every single time I feel unstable, sad or depressed, this song is my spiritual medicine. I am eternally thankful.
Rip Gerda Taro and Robert Capa.. This song is beyond perfection, no words
Music that gives goosebumps. Discovering this beauty late, I’m just in awe of all the amazing music that’s yet to be listened.

just a hint.. the story is about Robert Capa and Gerda Taro becoming the most famous photographers during the war... they both lived , loved and died on the frontline.
Nice to know!! I had no idea what the music was about

Much love!!

"Do not spray into eyes - I have sprayed you into my eyes." That is one of the most beautiful lines I've ever heard. It is like Capa saying that instead of taking Taro's death as a warning, she still inspired him to keep on going. Both died doing what they were born for and were reunited in death.
Thank you. Great comment.

How do 10,000 people dislike this beautiful song/video? The films that this footage comes from are awesome. But just the song on its own is so amazing. I can't understand how anyone could dislike it.
no shit!
I think they might dislike the voice and/ or the genre.
@@michelsijtsma5308 Maybe, but can't people appreciate something tastefully and artistically done even if it's "not their bag" so to speak? I never get it when people can't do that. You know?
@@tristezzalamentoluciano265 Couldn't agree more!!

(I am using a translator)
you communicated your point beautifully
that was beautiful.
If you actually look for what the lyrics mean your mind would be blown away. Best story ever told and formed in to lyrics. It is magic this song!
Best story ever told? Hahaha, give me a fucking break... it's about two idiots going into a war zone and getting themselves killed. Not exactly deep.
Alejandro Bakken bittersweet melancholy
As soon as i heard it, it became one of my favourite songs! :D SPECTACULAR
Nothing makes me realize how much I love humans more than this video and this song.
The world is a beautiful place if you open your eyes.
@Brian you clearly havent opened your eyes to see the mess youve done
Sometimes you gotta close your eyes to see

@Brian not sure what u mean with libtard clearly missing the whole point
@Brian ironically ur eyes seem very closed while reading my messages
one of the best video and song combination on youtube
It might not have been the intention at all and other people might see it differently, but to me it's a powerful statement about war, especially because of the contrast to the lyrics.
you explain that so well with beautiful words thank you for this comment its exactly how i feel about this video as well
Oof, what a reply.....love this message. And the string instrument is so full of cheer.
I bet I have watched this video well over a 100 times in the last several years.... It rips at my soul every time I watch... But I cannot get enough...
Don’t be hopeful have FAITH 🦋🌻
The imagery you’re looking at is from Godfrey Reggio, part of his movie “Powaqqatsi”. It’s a really powerful movie, second in the “Qatsi” trilogy. There’s so dialogue in his movies, only cinematics, and a really great musical score. I encourage anyone who finds these cinematics as interesting as I do to look up the “Qatsi Trilogy”, and explore Reggio’s work.
Thanks ☘️

Nice SWAG, thx for sharing. Not sure what genre to put this music into, kind of orchestral Indian dubstep, not out of line to what I was listening to intensely right before I "discovered" Nirvana last year.
